THE EFFECT OF NURSES' CHALLENGES TO STOPPING SMOKING ON NICOTINE ADDICTIONS

This study was conducted to examine the effects of nurses' difficulties in quitting smoking and their socio-demographic characteristics on Nicotine addictions. A cross-sectional study was conducted between August and November 2022. The study reached 410 nurses. The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence and the challenges to stopping smoking were used in the study. In the analysis of data; percentage, number, and linear regression techniques were used. It was determined that 30.3% of the nurses had high Nicotine Addiction. It was determined that the mean score of the Internal factors sub-dimension of the Nurses' challenges to stopping smoking was 28.89±8.06, the mean score of the Extrinsic Factors sub-dimension was 23.07±8.36, and the mean Nicotine Addiction scale score was 4.20±2.51. It was determined that the smoking nurse's age, perceived income level, smoking duration, and internal factors sub-dimension of the difficulties in quitting smoking had a 34% effect on the Nicotine addiction test. It was determined that the smoking addiction levels of the nurses who had difficulties in quitting smoking were higher. The Extrinsic Factors sub-dimension of the challenges to stopping smoking of nurses who smoked did not affect Nicotine Addiction status.

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN EXERCISE ADDICTION AND NUTRITIONAL LEVELS AMONG STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Physical exercise is a voluntary, planned, structured, continuous activity aimed at developing and improving body and physical fitness. While nutrition constitutes one dimension of healthy lifestyle behaviors, exercise and physical activity constitute the other dimension. We aimed to examine the relationship between healthy nutrition levels and exercise addiction levels of students studying at the faculty of health sciences. Our study was performed on 133 students studying at Sakarya University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences. The nutrition levels of the participants were assessed with the Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale (NEBS) and exercise dependence levels were assessed with the Exercise Dependence Scale (EDS). The mean values of age and body mass index of the subjects were 21.83±4.21 and 18.13±3.09, respectively. Differences in Smartphone Addiction between Male and Female Adolescents

The number of smartphone users has been rapidly increasing because smartphones are not only used as communication devices but also as means to seek entertainment and information. Data shows that 80% of smartphone users in Indonesia are teenagers. Unfortunately, excessive smartphone usage can lead to negative consequences, one of which is smartphone addiction. There are differences in emotional aspects between teenage boys and girls that can lead to differences in smartphone addiction between them. This research was conducted to determine whether there is a difference in smartphone addiction between male and female adolescents. The research used a non-experimental research strategy with a differential research design. A total of 100 teenagers (50 girls and 50 boys) who lived in South Jakarta, aged 10-24 years, and owning smartphones participated in the study. The results indicate that there is a difference in smartphone addiction between male and female adolescents, where female having a higher level of addiction.

Effects of Smartphone Addiction on the Physical and Mental Well-being of Indian Students

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the influence of varying levels of addiction, ranging from no addiction to extremely high addiction, on the physical and mental well-being of Indian students. Methods: The study is descriptive and based on the survey method. The six constructs and 15 physical and mental well-being items were assessed on the 5-point Likert scale. The composite scores were computed and classified into five categories. Findings: The results revealed that students aged 18-22 and 23-27 heavily rely on smartphones to explore their identity, socialize, and engage in academic and professional endeavours; male and female students and 91% of Professional/vocational training students exhibit the highest frequency of moderate addiction. Students (39%) spend 2-4 hours on smartphones daily based on individual preferences, habits, and lifestyle factors. A positive correlation was found between age and addiction group as well as between addiction group and smartphone usage, and negative correlations were found between smartphone usage and age groups. A significant correlation exists between an inability to control carvings (ICC), dependency (D), Conflict (C), Over-Usage (OU) and Withdrawal and Escape (WE), and all these have the greatest contribution to the first variate. MANOVA Analysis Pillai's Trace (<0.001); Wilks' Lambda (<0.001); Hotelling's Trace (<0.001); Roy's Largest Root (<0.001) revealed substantial disparities among groups stratified by addiction severity spanning from no addiction to extremely high addiction across a spectrum of physical and mental well-being dimensions among Indian students. The discriminant function plot effectively illustrated the discernment achieved in varying levels of smartphone addiction, notably accentuating differences among moderate (0.370), high (1.091), and extremely high (1.803) addiction categories. Novelty: This study investigated how varying levels of addiction exert influence on both physical and mental well-being and shed new light on this multifaceted relationship, particularly among students within the context of Indian academia. Effect of an Intervention Based on the Health Action Process Approach Model on Mobile Phone Addiction in Adolescents

Background: Mobile phone addiction in adolescents is a serious social problem that not only negatively affects physical and mental health but also hinders social stability and development. However, studies on interventions for mobile phone addiction in adolescents are still few. Therefore, exploring interventions for mobile phone addiction in adolescents and scrutinizing the corresponding mechanism of action are crucial. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 800 adolescents who were recruited using random sampling from communities in Hubei Province, China in 2023, and 232 of them were identified to have mobile phone addiction. Then, they were randomly divided into the experiment group, comprising 119 members, and the control group, composed of 113 members. The experiment group was given a 3-month intervention under the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model, whereas the control group was given no intervention. Results: This intervention significantly reduced the level of mobile phone addiction in adolescents (P<0.05). It also significantly improved self-efficacy in adolescents with mobile phone addiction (P<0.05). The intervention can significantly improved life satisfaction in adolescents with mobile phone addiction (P<0.05). Self-efficacy and life satisfaction had a chain mediating effect (P<0.001). Conclusion: The HAPA model is conducive to alleviating mobile phone addiction. It further enhances the intervention effect by improving self-efficacy and life satisfaction in adolescents.

The interplay of psychological resilience and adolescent mobile phone addiction in Henan province, China: insights from latent class analysis.

The aim of this study was to classify distinct subgroups of adolescents based on the severity levels of their mobile phone addiction and to investigate how these groups differed in terms of their psychosocial characteristics. We surveyed a total of 2,230 adolescents using three different questionnaires to assess the severity of their mobile phone addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, psychological resilience, and personality. Latent class analysis was employed to identify the subgroups, and we utilized Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and multinomial logistic regression for statistical analysis. All data analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.5. We classified the subjects into subgroups based on their mobile phone addiction severity, and the results revealed a clear pattern with a three-class model based on the likelihood level of mobile phone addiction (p < 0.05). We examined common trends in psychosocial traits such as age, grade at school, parental education level, anxiety levels, and resilience. ROC analysis of sensitivity versus 1-specificity for various mobile phone addiction index (MPAI) scores yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.893 (95% CI, 0.879 to 0.905, p < 0.001). We also determined diagnostic value indices for potential cutoff points ranging from 8 to 40. The optimal cutoff value for MPAI was found to be >14, which corresponded to the maximum Youden index (Youden index = 0.751). The latent classification process in this research confirmed the existence of three distinct mobile phone user groups. We also examined the psychosocial characteristics that varied in relation to the severity levels of addiction. This study provides valuable insights into the categorization of adolescents based on the severity of mobile phone addiction and sheds light on the psychosocial characteristics associated with different addiction levels. These findings are expected to enhance our understanding of mobile phone addiction traits and stimulate further research in this area.

Nicotine strength of e-liquids used by adult vapers in Great Britain: A population survey 2016 to 2024.

In March 2024, the UK government announced plans to introduce a Vaping Products Duty that will tax e-liquids based on their nicotine strength. This study examined trends in the nicotine strength of e-liquids used by adult vapers and differences in those currently used across relevant subgroups. Nationally-representative, cross-sectional household survey, July 2016 to January 2024. Great Britain. 7981 adult vapers. Participants were asked whether the e-cigarette they mainly use contains nicotine (yes/no) and the e-liquid strength (no nicotine, >0-≤ 6, 7-11, 12-19 or ≥20 mg/ml). We also collected information on the main device type used (disposable/refillable/pod), age, gender, occupational social grade, history of ≥1 mental health conditions, smoking status and (among past-year smokers) level of cigarette addiction. The proportion of vapers in England using high-strength (≥20 mg/ml) e-liquids increased from an average of 3.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.9-5.0) up to June 2021 to 32.5% (CI = 27.9-37.4) in January 2024 (the vast majority of whom [93.3% in January 2024] reported using exactly 20 mg/ml; the legal limit). This rise was most pronounced among those using disposable e-cigarettes, those aged 18-24 years and all smoking statuses (including never smokers) except long-term (≥1y) ex-smokers. Of those surveyed in 2022-2024 in Great Britain, overall, 89.5% (CI = 88.1-90.8) said they usually used e-cigarettes containing nicotine, 8.7% (CI = 7.5-10.0) used nicotine-free e-cigarettes, and 1.8% (CI = 1.2-2.4) were unsure. The proportion using ≥20 mg/ml was higher among those mainly using disposable (47.9%) compared with pod (16.3%) or refillable (11.5%) devices; never smokers (36.0%), current smokers (28.8%) or recent (<1y) ex-smokers (27.4%), compared with long-term ex-smokers (13.9%); and younger (16-24y; 44.2%) compared with older (≥25y; range 9.4-25.1%) age groups. There were no notable differences across other subgroups of interest. Use of high-strength nicotine e-liquids in England appears to have increased sharply in recent years. Most adult vapers in Great Britain appear to use e-cigarettes that contain nicotine but different subgroups use different strengths: nicotine strengths tend to be higher among those who mainly use disposable devices and those aged 16-24y, and lower among long-term ex-smokers.

Cross-Cultural Examination of Problematic Internet Use and Associated Psychological Variables: A Comparative Study in Italy, Spain, Ecuador, and Peru.

Background: Several studies focused on the escalating prevalence of Problematic Use of Internet (PUI) and its consequential impact on mental health globally. This study investigates the relationship between PUI and associated psychological variables across different cultural contexts in Italy, Spain, Ecuador, and Peru. Method: A total of 675 participants, aged 18 to 54 (M = 22.73; SD = 4.05), completed measures assessing Internet addiction, social media addiction, Fear of Missing Out, Internet Gaming Disorder, and Phubbing. Results: Significant cultural variations were found, with Italian participants showing higher levels of Internet addiction but lower levels of social media addiction compared to other countries. Fear of Missing Out was higher in Italy, while the Italian sample exhibited lower Internet Gaming Disorder levels compared to Peru. As regards the communication disturbance caused by Phubbing, the Italian sample demonstrated significantly higher scores than the Peruvian sample. Linear regression analyses revealed distinct predictors for problematic Internet use in each country, emphasizing the importance of considering the cultural context in understanding this phenomenon. Conclusions: These findings contribute valuable insights into the interplay of cultural factors, psychological variables, and problematic Internet use, guiding future research and interventions.

Internet addiction among adults: A cross-sectional study

Introduction: Human beings generally feel stressed at some point in life. Internet addiction disorder is increasingly gaining attention as individuals use the internet excessively as a maladaptive way to cope with daily life stress. Objective: The paper aims to find out the level of internet addiction with respect to gender, age groups, and family type, to determine the difference (if any) between males and females with respect to internet addiction, the difference (if any) in internet addiction with respect to age groups, and the difference (if any) between nuclear and joint family types with respect to internet addiction. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 140 participants (71 male and 69 female) from Kolkata, West Bengal. Findings: It shows a statistically significant difference in internet addiction mean scores between males and females. It also indicates that participants under 25 years of age have higher mean scores than those over 25 years. The next part reveals that individuals in nuclear families have higher mean scores than those in joint families, regardless of gender and age group, and finally indicates a statistically significant interaction effect of age group with gender and family type. Conclusion: Gender significantly affects internet addiction mean scores, with females under 25 in nuclear families being more addicted than their counterparts.

Fatigue, Internet Addiction and Symptoms of Long COVID-A Cross-Sectional Study of Polish Students.

Introduction: Fatigue is the most persistent symptom in patients with long COVID. Moreover, Internet addiction itself has become a pandemic long-term effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the degree of fatigue and Internet addiction in a group of students with COVID-19 and to determine the relationship between fatigue and addiction in students with and without long COVID symptoms. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 402 Polish students aged 19-26. The 183 students who had COVID-19 signaled the presence of long COVID symptoms, which corresponded to 45.5% of the surveyed group. The Modified Fatigue Impact Scale was used to assess the level of fatigue, and the Kimberly Young questionnaire was used to assess the level of Internet addiction. Results: 19.7% (95% c.i.: 15.9-23.9%) of the students surveyed had a moderate level of Internet dependence (Internet addiction measure value of 50 points or more). Most of them did not complain of high levels of fatigue. Higher levels of dependence and fatigue were observed in subjects with long COVID symptoms (MFIS mean value was 26.5 in this group vs. 17.7 in the others; p = 0.0000 ***). The higher the respondents' level of dependence, the more they tended to feel tired (correlations were stronger in those with long COVID symptoms: rS = 0.23; p = 0.0017 **). Conclusions: In view of the results obtained, the study presented here has the potential to contribute to the international debate on the long-term health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and strategies to address them. The study provides data that may be useful in the development of educational and health policies that target the psychophysical well-being of patients with long COVID symptoms. This process should be considered as a long-term endeavor.

Moderation of the real-world effectiveness of smoking cessation aids by mental health conditions: A population study

Objective To examine whether the real-world effectiveness of popular smoking cessation aids differs between users with and without a history of mental health conditions. Design Nationally-representative cross-sectional survey conducted monthly between 2016–17 and 2020–23. Setting England. Participants 5,593 adults (2,524 with a history of ≥1 mental health conditions and 3,069 without) who had smoked regularly within the past year and had attempted to quit at least once in the past year. Main outcome measures The outcome was self-reported abstinence from quit date up to the survey. Independent variables were use of the following cessation aids during the most recent quit attempt: prescription nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), NRT over-the-counter, varenicline, bupropion, vaping products, face-to-face behavioural support, telephone support, written self-help materials, websites, hypnotherapy, Allen Carr’s Easyway, heated tobacco products, and nicotine pouches. The moderator was history of diagnosed mental health conditions (yes/no). Covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, level of cigarette addiction, and characteristics of the quit attempt. Results Relative to those without, participants with a history of mental health conditions were significantly more likely to report using vaping products (38.8% [95%CI 36.7–40.8] vs. 30.7% [28.9–32.5]), prescription NRT (4.8% [3.9–5.7] vs. 2.7% [2.1–3.3]), and websites (4.0% [3.2–4.8] vs. 2.2% [1.6–2.7]). Groups did not differ significantly in their use of other aids. After adjusting for covariates and use of other cessation aids, those who used vaping products (OR = 1.92, 95%CI 1.61–2.30), varenicline (OR = 1.88, 95%CI 1.19–2.98), or heated tobacco products (OR = 2.33, 95%CI 1.01–5.35) had significantly higher odds of quitting successfully than those who did not report using these aids. There was little evidence that using other cessation aids increased the odds of successful cessation, or that the user’s history of mental health conditions moderated the effectiveness of any aid. Conclusions Use of vaping products, varenicline, or heated tobacco products in a quit attempt was associated with significantly greater odds of successful cessation, after adjustment for use of other cessation aids and potential confounders. There was no evidence to suggest the effectiveness of any popular cessation aid differed according to the user’s history of mental health conditions.

Analysis of the Impact of Student Internet Addiction on Self-Efficacy and Countermeasures after the Resumption of Classes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aims to investigate the impact of internet addiction on the self-efficacy of middle school students after the resumption of classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to analyze corresponding countermeasures. In the field of education, the application of self-efficacy has significant implications. Enhancing individual self-efficacy plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of internet addiction. There is a negative correlation between internet addiction and self-efficacy, meaning that the higher the level of internet addiction, the lower the self-efficacy of middle school students. Based on this, this paper proposes interventions to enhance self-efficacy and prevent internet addiction. In a supportive social and policy environment, through concerted efforts from schools and families, we can effectively address internet addiction issues amidst the backdrop of COVID-19, promoting students' physical and mental health development, enhancing their self-efficacy, reducing their dependency and obsession with the internet. Future research could further explore the specific factors influencing internet addiction and self-efficacy, conduct more detailed cross-group comparative studies, and examine the differences and correlations between different groups in terms of internet addiction and self-efficacy. We will also continue to explore the possibility of using intelligent technology to intervene in internet addiction, devising personalized treatment plans tailored to individual characteristics and needs.

Behavioral Issues Related to Excessive Usage of Social Media among School-going Adolescents: A Study from Sonitpur District of Assam, India

Background: School-going adolescents are found to be on the leading edge when it comes to social media usage. Aim and Objectives: The study was designed to see the behavioral issues related to excessive usage of social media among school-going adolescents from the Sonitpur district of Assam, India. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive research design and simple random sampling were used to collect data. At the onset, 1045 respondents were recruited, but finally, n = 943 respondents were kept for the final study. Tools administered were sociodemographic data sheet, a semi-structured questionnaire, strength and difficulty questionnaire, and social media addiction scale. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23.0. Results: The level of social media addiction was very high in 30.5% of the respondents. In Pearson’s coefficient correlation, social media addiction score was found to be significantly positively correlated with the emotional problem (r = 0.509, P = 0.01), conduct problem (r = 0.398, P = 0.01), hyperactivity problem (r = 0.489, P = 0.01), and peer problem (r = 0.359, P = 0.01). Conclusion: The present study highlighted the high prevalence of social media addiction among school-going adolescents. Hence, based on the findings, precautionary measures are the need of the hour. Intervention can be planned at the school level in collaboration with mental health-care personnel such as psychologists, school counselors, and social workers, etc.

THE IMPACT OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' INDIVIDUAL HEALTH PERCEPTIONS ON INTERNET ADDICTION LEVELS

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of university students' individual health perceptions on the level of internet addiction. Additionally, the study aims to reveal differences in internet addiction and individual health perceptions among students based on various demographic variables. A total of 286 students from Düzce University participated in the study. The data collection tools used were the Internet Addiction Scale and Individual Health Perception Scales. It was found that the students' levels of internet addiction were low, while their individual health perceptions were at a moderate level. The average internet addiction scores were relatively higher for male students, those enrolled in formal education, and those with a moderate income level compared to other groups. It was observed that the level of health perception did not vary according to students' income status, gender, type of settlement, and type of education. A weak relationship was identified between university students' health perceptions and internet addiction. These findings contribute significantly to understanding the relationship between internet addiction and health perceptions among university students. However, it should be noted that further research is needed to better comprehend the complexity of this relationship. This study may serve as a foundation for future research aiming to develop effective intervention strategies against internet addiction.

Effects of school-based physical activity on volition in exercise, sleep quality and internet addiction in Italian adolescents

School-settings represent ideal context to promote healthy habits as in adolescence most risk factors may occur or intensify leading to the adoption of unhealthy lifestyles. Thus, a deeper understanding of the factors promoting healthy lifestyles in adolescents is of utmost importance.This observational study aims to investigate: 1) gender-related differences in physical activity (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescets – PAQ-A), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index - PSQI) and internet addiction (Internet Addiction Test – IAT) levels and Volition in Exercise (VE); 2) the relationship between PAQ-A and VE, PSQI and IAT; 3) the effects of a five-month (T0; T5) school-based physical activity (PA) intervention on the above-mentioned factors. PAQ-A,VE, PSQI and IAT were assessed before (T0) and after (T5) a school-based PA intervention. The PA intervention consisted of coordinative exercises and team sports performed for 1 h twice a week. At T0, girls showed lower PAQ-A, PSQI scores, lower volition facilitators (“self-confidence” and “coping with failure”) and higher volition inhibitor (“postponing training”) than boys. Significant correlations were observed for volition factors an IAT in males and volition and PSQI and IAT in females. After the PA intervention (T5), “postponing training” and “self-confidence” factors were reduced compared to T0.Exercise specialists should consider gender differences in volition in exercise factors during a school-based PA to plan and realize PA protocols aiming at maximizing exercise adherence to tackle sedentary behaviors in adolescents.

Drogue, violence et résilience : consommateurs de drogue en cure et anciens délinquants violents à Dakar

In Senegal, violent delinquency and illicit drug use are on the increase. This study focuses on two distinct groups: drug users (DUs) undergoing rehabilitation and violent ex-offenders (VEs). The methodology adopted includes a quantitative survey of the general population (n=1009), followed by a qualitative survey of fifteen participants, including eight DUs undergoing treatment at the Centre de prise en charge int&#233;gr&#233;e des addictions de Dakar (CEPIAD) (Integrated Addictions Management Center of Dakar) and the Centre Jacques Chirac de Thiaroye, and seven former VEs from the Grand Yoff district. This neighborhood, known for its violence, is juxtaposed with the Grand Yoff social housing estate, a residential area also affected by outbreaks of violence. This study aims to establish the link(s) between drug use and criminal violence by analyzing the life stories of young adults who have managed to leave drug use and delinquency behind. It then looks to identify the determinants of resilience in certain young people. The study revealed delinquent violence among young people does not systematically result from drug use. Rather, drug use is a factor conducive to violence. The links between drugs and violence depend on individual predisposition, the type of drugs used, and the level of addiction. Resilience results from a web of individual, sociocultural, and environmental factors. It is not static, but rather the result of a series of successes, failures, and even relapses.

Social Media Addiction and Emotional Intelligence in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder.

The relationship between depression and severity of social media addiction is likely to be bidirectional. Nevertheless, current studies have addressed the depression score utilizing a scale in the general population instead of assessing this relationship in patients with major depressive disorder. Despite the fact that the negative relationship of social media addiction with emotional intelligence is acknowledged, the existence of this relationship in major depressive disorder has not been investigated yet. Hence, the objective of our study is to evaluate severity of social media addiction and emotional intelligence in major depressive disorder. This research was performed with 158 participants between the ages of 18 and 56 in Kars Harakani State Hospital Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic. Sociodemographic data form involving the age, gender, marital status, education level and employment status of the participants, Beck Depression Inventory, Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory, and Social Media Addiction Scale were implemented to the participants. Creating the group to be none-less addicted and medium-highly addicted with regard to the social media addiction scale score, it was observed that the emotional intelligence of the medium-highly addicted group was significantly lower, and the depression score was higher (P < .001). Furthermore, the severity of social media addiction had a positive relationship with the depression score and a negative relationship with the emotional intelligence score (r = 0.353, P < .001; r = -0.376, P < .001). Emotional intelligence in major depressive disorder is associated with both depression level and severity of social media addiction. Interventions, i.e., emotional intelligence skill training, might be practical for the aforementioned patients.

Internet addiction among school adolescents in Jeddah-Saudi Arabia

BackgroundInternet addiction is increasing among adolescents worldwide. There is a lack of research assessing internet addiction and factors contributing to it among adolescents in Jeddah city. The current study aimed to assess the rate of internet addiction among adolescents in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the potential factors associated with it.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey, hosted by SurveyMonkey, was used to capture data on internet use from 462 adolescents aged 12–18 years between March and May 2022. Young’s Internet Addiction Scale was used to assess the degree of internet addiction as perceived by adolescents. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify possible predictors of internet addiction among adolescents in Jeddah.ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 15.5 ± 1.9 years. The majority were females (75%) from public schools (63%), spent an average of six hours on the internet daily, owned smartphones (98%), accessed the internet via a smartphone (94%), and used the internet for socializing (82%). Internet addiction mean score was 39.20 ± 15.20 out of 100. More than two-thirds of the participants had mild to moderate levels of internet addiction (68%). Significant predictors contributing to internet addiction were using the internet for socialization and playing online games. The more hours spent on the internet daily, the more the internet addiction was (p ≤ 0.05).ConclusionsThe internet addiction rate is high among school adolescents in Jeddah. The majority of high school adolescents had mild to moderate levels of internet addiction. Interventional multidisciplinary programs are needed to mitigate the factors that influence internet addiction.

Effects of extracurricular activities and academic helplessness on smartphone addiction: a multi-level analysis of a South Korean sample

This study investigated the protective and risk factors of smartphone addiction at the individual and group levels using multi-level modelling, with a particular focus on extracurricular activities and academic helplessness. Data from the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) were used in the analyses. These data included 2,590 middle-school students (1,405 males and 1,185 females, 8th-grade students) nested in 17 cities. The findings revealed that individual-level variables, including lack of control belief and lack of active performance, were significant predictors of smartphone addiction. Furthermore, extracurricular activities contributed to decreased levels of smartphone addiction at both group and regional levels. The effects of individual-level variables on smartphone addiction differed depending on the rational-level variables. Based on these findings, educational implications and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
