Funnel-Based Adaptive Neural Fault-Tolerant Control for Nonlinear Systems with Dead-Zone and Actuator Faults: Application to Rigid Robot Manipulator and Inverted Pendulum Systems

This study addresses an adaptive neural funnel fault-tolerant control problem for a class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems with actuator faults and input dead zone. To guarantee the boundedness of the tracking error, a modified transformation for funnel error is devised and incorporated into the control design process. To manage unknown nonlinear functions, radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) are employed in designing an adaptive neural funnel fault-tolerant controller through the backstepping technique. The proposed controller guarantees the output tracking error stays within a predefined funnel, and all signals in the closed-loop system are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB). Finally, simulations of a rigid robot manipulator system and an inverted pendulum system are conducted to validate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Event-triggered adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for a 2-DOF helicopter system with prescribed performance

In this paper, we focus on an event-triggered adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for a two-degree of freedom (2-DOF) helicopter system with actuator failures. In this design, a radial basis function neural network (NN) is exploited to estimate the uncertainty terms present in the system. A new error transformation technique is employed to make the tracking error of the system satisfy a prescribed performance function. Then, an event triggering mechanism is introduced to reduce the communication burden of the system. Smoothing functions and bounded estimation methods are then used to compensate for actuator failures and measurement errors. The helicopter system is proved to be consistently bounded by the direct method of Lyapunov functions. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the control strategy.

Fixed-time command-filtered composite adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for strict-feedback nonlinear systems

The research investigates the fixed-time command-filtered composite adaptive neural fault-tolerant (FCCANF) control issue of strict-feedback nonlinear systems (SFNSs). There exist unknown functions and bounded disturbances in the considered systems. Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) will be used in the estimate of the unknown functions. By the serial–parallel estimation models (SPEMs), the forecast biases and the track biases can change the weights of RBFNNs and the approximate characteristics of RBFNNs will be improved. Then, utilizing the novel fixed-time command filter and adaptive disturbance observers, the issue of complex explosion will be effectively solved and the external disturbance is effectively compensated. Subsequently, by utilizing the adaptive control technique, a novel FCCANF controller is developed. Additionally, we have that the system internal variables are bounded and the output variable inclines to a little interval around zero in fixed time which is not determined by the system initial variables. Eventually, numerical and practical examples are shown to prove the availability of the obtained control technique.

Adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for output-constrained attitude tracking of unmanned space vehicles

The challenging problem of attitude tracking control for unmanned space vehicles (USVs) subject to actuator faults and output constraints is addressed in this study. A novel adaptive neural fault-tolerant controller is proposed by integrating the neural networks (NNs) and barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) with the backstepping technique. Two NNs are adopted to approximate the uncertain nonlinear terms caused by unknown attitude dynamics and actuator faults, respectively. Moreover, the BLF is introduced to tackle the output constraints. It is strictly proved that all the closed-loop error signals are uniformly ultimately bounded under the proposed controller. Totally, the proposed adaptive neural fault-tolerant controller has the following two distinctive features. (1) The proposed controller is model-free and can still be applicable even when the USV attitude dynamic model is completely unknown in advance. (2) The proposed controller can guarantee the attitude tracking error always within the predefined output constraints even in the presence of actuator faults and thus ensuring safety. Finally, the excellent tracking performance of the proposed controller is verified through numerical simulations and comparisons.

Adaptive Neural Fault-Tolerant Control for Nonlinear Fractional-Order Systems with Positive Odd Rational Powers

In this paper, the problem of adaptive neural fault-tolerant control (FTC) for the fractional-order nonlinear systems (FNSs) with positive odd rational powers (PORPs) is considered. By using the radial basis function neural networks (RBF NNs), the unknown nonlinear functions from the controlled system can be approximated. With the help of an adaptive control ideology, the unknown control rate of the actuator fault can be handled. In particular, the FNSs subject to high-order terms are studied for the first time. In addition, the designed controller can ensure the boundedness of all the signals of the closed-loop control system, and the tracking error can tend to a small neighborhood of zero in the end. Finally, the illustrative examples are shown to validate the effectiveness of the developed method.

Multiapproximator-Based Fault-Tolerant Tracking Control for Unmanned Autonomous Helicopter With Input Saturation

In this article, an adaptive neural fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme is proposed for the medium-scale unmanned autonomous helicopter subject to external disturbance, actuator fault, and input saturation. Multiple approximators are constructed to handle the unknown terms and promote the control design. The nonlinear coupled function terms are approximated by virtue of the radial basis function neural networks. The unknown disturbance is tackled by the developed disturbance observer. Meanwhile, two auxiliary systems are introduced to handle the actuator fault and input saturation, respectively. In the framework of the backstepping method, a multiapproximator-based adaptive FTC strategy is presented, which assures the boundedness of all closed-loop system signals. Simulation results are presented to validate the availability of the designed controller.

Adaptive Neural Fault-Tolerant Control for USV With the Output-Based Triggering Approach

This paper presents an adaptive neural fault-tolerant control algorithm for the path-following activity of the underactuated surface vehicle (USV) using the novel output-based triggering approach. In the algorithm, the event-triggered mechanism is designed utilizing the attitude states from the kinematics aspect of USV. Both the control inputs and the related calculation thread are implemented only at the trigger instants. Furthermore, neural networks (NNs) are employed to remodel the model uncertainties, and the adaptive observer is developed to estimate and compensate for the effect of the unknown actuator faults. With the direct Lyapunov theorem, the semi-global uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) stability can be guaranteed for the closed-loop system in aspects of both the trigger instant and the continuous interval. The comparison experiment has been illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which can effectively improve the information transmission performance and the fault-tolerant capability.

Small-Gain Technique-Based Adaptive Neural Output-Feedback Fault-Tolerant Control of Switched Nonlinear Systems With Unmodeled Dynamics

In this article, the issue of adaptive neural fault-tolerant control (FTC) is addressed for a class of uncertain switched nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics and unmeasurable states. In such a system, the uncertain nonlinear parts are identified by radial basis function (RBF) neural networks (NNs). Also, with the help of the structural characteristics of RBF NNs, the violation between the nontsrict-feedback form and backstepping method is tackled. Then, based on the small-gain technique, input-to-state practical stability (ISpS) theory, and common Lyapunov function (CLF) approach, an adaptive fault-tolerant tracking controller with only three adaptive laws is developed by designing an observer. It is shown that the designed controller can ensure that all the closed-loop signals are bounded under arbitrary switching, while the tracking error can converge to a small area of the origin. Finally, two simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the suggested control approach.

Adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for course tracking of unmanned surface vehicle with event-triggered input

This study investigates the course-tracking problem for the unmanned surface vehicle in the presence of constraints of the actuator faults, control gain uncertainties, and environmental disturbance. A novel event-triggered robust neural control algorithm is proposed by fusing the robust neural damping technique and the event-triggered input mechanism. In the algorithm, no prior information of the system model about the unknown yawing dynamic parameters and unknown external disturbances is required. The transmission burden between the controller and the actuator could be relieved. Moreover, the control gain-related uncertainties and the unknown actuator faults are compensated through two updated online adaptive parameters. Sufficient effort has been made to verify the semi-global uniform ultimate bounded stability for the closed-loop system based on Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.

LVS guidance principle and adaptive neural fault-tolerant formation control for underactuated vehicles with the event-triggered input

This paper presents a novel adaptive neural event-triggered formation control strategy for underactuated surface vehicles (USVs) in the presence of marine practical constraints, i.e. the waypoints-based planned path and actuator failures. The proposed strategy is composed of the guidance model and the control one. For the guidance part, the logic virtual ship (LVS) guidance principle is developed to implement the reference path programming for the formation pattern. For merit of the adaptive virtual ship, the smooth reference can be produced for followers without using the velocity information of leader. Furthermore, the proposed adaptive neural fault-tolerant control algorithm is to guarantee that the followers can maintain their pattern and converge to the corresponding reference path. In the algorithm, the neural networks (NNs)-based observer is designed to estimate the unmeasurable velocities of followers online. With the input event-triggered mechanism, two adaptive parameters are derived to compensate for the gain uncertainty and actuator failure. And that could effectively reduce the communication burden for the channel from controller to actuator. The derived closed-loop system has been proved to be with the semi-global uniform ultimate bounded (SGUUB) stability. Finally, the superiority of the proposed strategy can be verified by the simulation experiments.

Event-Triggered Adaptive Neural Fault-Tolerant Control of Underactuated MSVs With Input Saturation

This paper investigates the tracking control problem of marine surface vessels (MSVs) in the presence of uncertain dynamics and external disturbances. The facts that actuators are subject to undesirable faults and input saturation are taken into account. Benefiting from the smoothness of the Gaussian error function, a novel saturation function is introduced to replace each nonsmooth actuator saturation nonlinearity. Applying the hand position approach, the original motion dynamics of underactuated MSVs are transformed into a standard integral cascade form so that the vector design method can be used to solve the control problem for underactuated MSVs. By combining the neural network technique and virtual parameter learning algorithm with the vector design method, and introducing an event triggering mechanism, a novel event-triggered indirect neuroadaptive fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed, which has several notable characteristics compared with most existing strategies: 1) it is not only robust and adaptive to uncertain dynamics and external disturbances but is also tolerant to undesirable actuator faults and saturation; 2) it reduces the acting frequency of actuators, thereby decreasing the mechanical wear of the MSV actuators, via the event-triggered control (ETC) technique; 3) it guarantees stable tracking without the a <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">priori</i> knowledge of the dynamics of the MSVs, external disturbances or actuator faults; and 4) it only involves two parameter adaptations—a virtual parameter and a lower bound on the uncertain gains of the actuators—and is thus more affordable to implement. On the basis of the Lyapunov theorem, it is verified that all signals in the tracking control system of the underactuated MSVs are bounded. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by simulations and comparative results.

Adaptive fault-tolerant control for switched nonlinear systems based on command filter technique

This article put forward an adaptive neural fault-tolerant control strategy for a class of switched nonlinear systems subject to actuator fault by means of the command filter approach. By using neural networks, the unknown nonlinear functions of the system under consideration are approximated, while its unmeasurable states are estimated by establishing a switched observer. Furthermore, the “explosion of complexity” issue, which arises from the derivatives of virtual controllers, is addressed with the command filter method. In order to reduce filter errors and overcome the drawbacks of the most traditional approaches, such as the ones based on dynamic surface control techniques, an error compensation mechanism was developed. In summary, by taking advantage of the command filter approach, backstepping algorithm, and average dwell time method, an adaptive NNs fault-tolerant controller is established for the system under consideration. Finally, the designed controller has the ability to make the reference signal which can be tracked by the output of the system as close as possible and the boundness of all signals within the closed-loop system can be guaranteed. The usefulness of the designed controller is illustrated by the simulation example.

Decentralized fractional-order backstepping fault-tolerant control of multi-UAVs against actuator faults and wind effects

Concurrent occurrences of actuator faults and wind effects can significantly threaten the flight safety of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAVs). To address this difficult control problem against actuator faults and wind effects, a composite decentralized fractional-order (FO) backstepping adaptive neural fault-tolerant control (FTC) method is presented for the attitude synchronization tracking of multi-UAVs, which is integrated with neural networks (NNs), disturbance observers (DOs), FO calculus, and high-order sliding-mode differentiators (HOSMDs). The distinctive feature of this work is addressing the attitude synchronization tracking control problem with actuator faults and wind effects in a decentralized framework and proposing a composite approximation method for multi-UAVs. It is shown that by using Lyapunov methods the synchronization tracking control is achieved even when multi-UAVs simultaneously encounter wind effects and actuator faults. Comparative simulation results illustrate the theoretical feasibility.

Minimum-Learning-Parameters-Based Adaptive Neural Fault Tolerant Control With Its Application to Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor

In this paper, a decentralized neural network (NN) output feedback fault tolerant control (FTC) problem is addressed for a class of multi-input multi-output systems with actuator fault. In order to avoid the noncausal problem, the original system is transformed into an input-output expression in accordance with the diffeomorphism theory. Then, in order to establish a quick response to the fault, the fault tolerant controller with minimum learning parameters has been designed such that the semiglobal uniform ultimate boundedness of all the variables in the resulting closed-loop systems can be guaranteed. Finally, the output feedback FTC approach is applied to the interconnected CSTRs, and the comparisons with existing methods are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Adaptive Neural Fault-Tolerant Control for the Yaw Control of UAV Helicopters with Input Saturation and Full-State Constraints

In this paper, an adaptive neural fault-tolerant tracking control scheme is presented for the yaw control of an unmanned-aerial-vehicle helicopter. The scheme incorporates a non-affine nonlinear system that manages actuator faults, input saturation, full-state constraints, and external disturbances. Firstly, by using a Taylor series expansion technique, the non-affine nonlinear system is transformed into an affine-form expression to facilitate the desired control design. In comparison with previous techniques, the actuator efficiency is explicit. Then, a neural network is considered to approximate unknown nonlinear functions, and a time-varying barrier Lyapunov function is employed to prevent transgression of the full-state variables using a backstepping technique. Robust adaptive control laws are designed to handle parameter uncertainties and unknown bounded disturbances to cut down the number of learning parameters and simplify the computational burden. Moreover, an auxiliary system is constructed to guarantee the pitch angle of the UAV helicopter yaw control system to satisfy the input constraint. Uniform boundedness of all signals in a closed-loop system is ensured via Lyapunov theory; the tracking error converges to a small neighborhood near zero. Finally, when the numerical simulations are applied to a yaw control of helicopter, the adaptive neural controller demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Adaptive neural fault-tolerant control for uncertain MIMO nonlinear systems with actuator faults and coupled interconnections

Handling both intermittent actuator faults and coupled interconnections in uncertain multiple-input–multiple-output nonlinear system is still a challenge in the control community. In this paper, to address this issue, an adaptive neural fault-tolerant control scheme is developed. Firstly, neural networks with random hidden nodes are used to approximate unknown functions, and an inequality is introduced to construct controllers such that the singularity problem of the controllers can be circumvented. Secondly, a projection algorithm is adopted to update online the estimated parameters in the controllers such that the boundedness of estimated parameters is ensured. In particular, the boundedness of estimate of unknown fault parameters with intermittent jumps can be definitely guaranteed. Due to the effects of intermittency jumps of unknown parameters on the system stability during operation, a modified Lyapunov function is developed to prove the system stability. It is proved that the system stability only depends on the jumping amplitude of Lyapunov function and the minimum fault time interval and is not affected by the total number of faults. Thirdly, a root mean square type of bound for the tracking error is established by using iterative calculation to illustrate that the system transient performance in the sense of the tracking error is adjustable by proper choice of design parameters. Finally, simulation studies are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Prescribed performance fault tolerant control for uncertain nonlinear systems with input saturation

This paper investigates the problem of adaptive fault tolerant tracking control for uncertain nonlinear systems in the event of external disturbances, actuator faults and input saturation. In order to guarantee the transient and steady-state control performance, the prescribed performance function is employed to impose the anticipant performance criterion on the output tracking error. By using the error transformation, the original inequality error constraint is converted to an unconstrained issue. For the conversion systems, the negative effect resulting from the external disturbances is restrained via the adaptive control approach. The radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is adopted to handle the unknown nonlinear functions. The Nussbaum gain technique is utilised to deal with the nonlinear terms arising from the actuator faults and input saturation. Combining with the backstepping control strategy, an adaptive neural fault tolerant control (FTC) scheme is developed for the uncertain nonlinear systems. It is rigorously proved that the proposed controller is capable of ensuring the boundness of all closed-loop signals as well as the specified tracking performance. Simulation results on two examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the presented control approach.
