Adapting the homes of older people: a case study of costs and savings

Meeting the demand for independent living from the increasing number of older people presents a major challenge for society, government and the building industry. Older people's experience of disabling conditions can be affected by the design and layout of their accommodation. Adaptations and assistive technology (AT) are a major way of addressing this gap between functional capacity and the built environment. The degree of adaptability and the differences in the average cost of adaptation of different types of property are large and there is major variation within property type. Based on a series of user profiles, it was found that a comprehensive package of adaptations and AT is likely to result in significant economies arising from a reduction in the need for formal care services. This finding is sensitive to assumptions about how long an individual would use the adaptations and AT, as well as to the input of informal care and the nature of their accommodation. The present study, which focused on social housing, has implications for how practitioners specify ways of meeting individual needs as well as providing a case to support the substantial increase in demand for specialist adaptation work.

Theory of Segmented Assimilation and the Adoption of Marijuana Use and Delinquent Behavior by Asian Pacific Youth

This article examines the adoption of behaviors of the teen drug and delinquent subcultures among Asian Pacific youth within the framework of the theory of segmented assimilation. Alejandro Portes and Min Zhou's theory offers a new perspective to the question: Under what conditions are youth susceptible to marijuana use and delinquent behavior? In contrast to Milton Gordon's classic one-path theory, segmented assimilation theory looks to the immigrant culture and social capital (e.g., social solidarity) as critical factors in the assimilation process. The theory suggests several different types of adaptation by immigrant youth and Asian youth born in the United States. The data from the Asian Student Drug Survey were used to analyze the patterns of marijuana use and delinquent behavior among Japanese. Chinese, Filipino. Korean, Southeast Asian, Asian Indian, and Pacific Islander youth, controlling for human capital and social capital, as well as other relevant factors. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors that affect the odds of marijuana use and delinquent behavior for the seven ethnic groups in this study. The likelihood of marijuana use differed significantly among the ethnic groups. For example, Pacific Islander and Filipino youth were much more likely than Japanese youth to use marijuana. Korean, Southeast Asian, and Asian Indian youth did not differ significantly from the Japanese youth in marijuana use. Like the model that predicted marijuana use, the Chinese youth were least likely to engage in delinquent behavior, while Filipino and Pacific Islander youth were most likely. Segmented assimilation theory points to the importance of the human and social capital that serve to insulate youth from the influence of the teen drug and delinquent cultures.

Human adaptation to climatic variability and change

Recent developments in both the policy arena and the climate impacts research community point to a growing interest in human adaptation to climatic variability and change. The Importance of adaptation in the climate change question is affirmed in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Technical Guidelines for Assessing Impacts and Adaptations and the IPCC's more recent Second Assessment Report. Yet, the nature and processes of human adaptation to climate are poorly understood and rarely investigated directly. Most often, human responses of one form or another are simply assumed in impacts research. Analyses that do address adaptation use a variety of interpretations and perspectives resulting in an Incomplete, and at times inconsistent, understanding of human adaptation to environmental variations. This paper reviews and synthesizes perspectives from an eclectic body of scholarship to develop a framework for characterizing and understanding human adaptation to climatic variability and change. The framework recognizes the characteristics of climatic events, the ecological properties of systems which mediate effects, and the distinctions which are possible among different types of adaptation. A classification scheme is proposed for differentiating adaptation strategies.

First and second phases of biphasic fever: two sequential stages of the sickness syndrome?

We hypothesized that the systemic inflammatory response undergoes two consecutive stages, each characterized by different nonspecific sickness patterns. To test this hypothesis, we studied thermal, nociceptive, and motor responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in 43 unanesthetized, habituated, and lightly restrained male Wistar rats previously implanted with a catheter in the jugular vein. Escherichia coli LPS was injected intravenously in a dose of 0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100, or 1,000 micrograms/kg. Colonic temperature (Tc) was measured with a thermocouple. Changes in nociception were assessed by tail flick latency (TFL) to a noxious heat stimulus. Motor activity was evaluated using an observation-based activity score (AS). The two lowest doses were apyrogenic. The next dose induced a monophasic fever with a maximal Tc rise of 0.9 +/- 0.2 degrees C at 108 +/- 11 min post-LPS. The next two higher doses caused biphasic fevers with the first and second peaks of 0.7 +/- 0.1 and 1.4 +/- 0.1 degrees C (10 micrograms/kg) and 0.7 +/- 0.1 and 1.4 +/- 0.2 degrees C (100 micrograms/kg) occurring at 60 +/- 6 and 165 +/- 17 min and at 45 +/- 3 and 141 +/- 6 min, respectively. The highest dose of LPS resulted in a Tc fall (nadir, -0.6 +/- 0.1 degree C at 83 +/- 6 min). Two different sickness patterns were exhibited. The first (high Tc, low TFL and high AS) occurred during the monophasic fever and the first (early) phase of the biphasic fevers, and it was termed the early phase syndrome. The second pattern (high or low Tc, high TFL, and low AS) developed during the second (late) phase of the biphasic fevers and LPS-hypothermia (endotoxin shock), and it was termed the late phase syndrome. Occurring at different stages of the systemic inflammatory response and developing through different coping patterns [fight/flight (energy expenditure) vs. depression/withdrawal (energy conservation)], the two syndromes represent two different types of adaptation to infection and have different biological significance. Viewing sickness as a dynamic entity is justified clinically. Such a dynamic approach to the problem resolves several contradictions in the current concept of sickness.

Inheritance of Resistance to Pseudomonas solanacearum E. F. Smith in Tetraploid Potato

AbstractInheritance of bacterial wilt resistance in tetraploid potato was investigated in segregating progenies of parent clones with resistance derived from different specific sources and different types of adaptation. A race 1 and a race 3 isolate of Pseudomonas solanacearum were used to test the resistance under warm temperatures. Results obtained indicated partial dominance of resistance. Significant general and specific combining abilities showed that both additive and non‐additive gene actions are important in conditioning resistance expression. There was evidence that epistasis is an important component of the non‐additive gene action in the inheritance of resistance. Other aspects of the resistance and implications for breeding are discussed.

Geographical distribution of basal metabolic rate with remarks to biological equator and circannual peak

Abstract Basal metabolic rate data were reviewed on a global scale. Data utilized consisted of 85 indigenous populations of various races, residing in the regions for generations, along with 79 non‐indigenous groups, living for years under diverse climatic conditions after having moved from temperate zones. Some insist on racial differences, while others claim different types of adaptation among ethnic groups. Many factors such as race, climate, food habits and mode of living may interact. Among them adaptation to seasonal change in climate is a major factor. A statistical study revealed that basal metabolism in the indigenous populations living in the arctic or highland regions was high, and in those living in the tropics it was low by some 10%. The non‐indigenous groups in the arctic regions presented a small rise in basal metabolism, and those in the tropics a slight fall. Adaptation to Hydrogen Sulfide of Oxygenic and Anoxygenic Photosynthesis among Cyanobacteria

Four different types of adaptation to sulfide among cyanobacteria are described based on the differential toxicity to sulfide of photosystems I and II and the capacity for the induction of anoxygenic photosynthesis. Most cyanobacteria are highly sensitive to sulfide toxicity, and brief exposures to low concentrations cause complete and irreversible cessation of CO(2) photoassimilation. Resistance of photosystem II to sulfide toxicity, allowing for oxygenic photosynthesis under sulfide, is found in cyanobacteria exposed to low H(2)S concentrations in various hot springs. When H(2)S levels exceed 200 muM another type of adaptation involving partial induction of anoxygenic photosynthesis, operating in concert with partially inhibited oxygenic photosynthesis, is found in cyanobacterial strains isolated from both hot springs and hypersaline cyanobacterial mats. The fourth type of adaptation to sulfide is found at H(2)S concentrations higher than 1 mM and involves a complete replacement of oxygenic photosynthesis by an effective sulfide-dependent, photosystem II-independent anoxygenic photosynthesis. The ecophysiology of the various sulfide-adapted cyanobacteria may point to their uniqueness within the division of cyanobacteria.

Characteristics of adaptation of muscle stretch receptors of dynamic type.

Experiments on cats with a de-efferented triceps surae muscle showed that some stretch receptors of dynamic type adapt quickly within the first few seconds after stretching of the muscle and its keeping at the new length, whereas other receptors reveal two components of adaptation-fast and slow. Units with different types of adaptation are found in the same muscle; their afferents belong mainly to group I, although there is a zone of overlapping with group II afferents. These differences are manifested at high values of initial stretching of the muscle. It is suggested that the slow component of adaptation is based on a mechanical factor depending on the visco-elastic properties of the tissues in the region of the sensory nerve endings.

Health and handicaps in the population older than 65 years of age in Basel and Bern

A preliminary communication is made about an epidemiological survey concerning the habits and problems of the elderly in Switzerland. Special interest is given the aspects of health and competence in the activities of daily life. Data about self-rated health status as well as degree of restriction in the activities of daily life are presented. No sex differences were found in these two dimensions. When looking at the different age groups, perceived health does not vary with age, whereas the frequency of self-rated dependency is nearly eight times higher among those aged 85 + (55.5%) compared to those aged 65--74 (7.4%). Further analyses will test hypotheses about selective mortality, sex role and adaptation to different types of handicaps.

Alternative Cultural Models for Demographic Change: Southwestern Examples

Two prehistoric Southwestern societies, the Black Mesa Anasazi and the Winslow Tradition of the Hopi Buttes, are used to demonstrate different types of adaptation to an increasing population.I indicate that changes in population density can be used to better understand the structure of society, as well as to investigate culture change. The role of demography, however, must be seen in the perspective of a single sub-system within the entire cultural and natural system. Viewed in this way, population pressure is a single part of the human ecosystem and not a simple cause or effect of culture change.The holistic approach of cultural ecological studies in anthropology has, in the last decade, proven to be a generally successful means for helping to understand the structure of cultural systems and also for elucidating some of the processes of culture change. The ecosystem concept is important to anthropology because of its holistic and synthetic characteristics; nevertheless anthropologists, for a variety of reasons, have used the ecosystem approach on a relatively simplistic, mechanical level which has limited the success of even the better studies.

Life Cycle and Temperature Requirements of Seven Herbaceous Species

Abstract A series of observations were made on the life cycle, phenology, and germination capacity of Galantbus nivalis L., Corydalis cava Schw. et Krt., Anemone nemorosa L., Symphytum tuberosum L., Allium ursinum L., Aegopodium podagraria L., and Campanula rapunculoides L. The studies were conducted in field, in the Arboretum of the Botanical Garden of Padua, in experimental field chambers, and in growth cabinets maintained at temperature of 4°, 15° and 25°C. The various stages of life cycle of plants require different optimal thermoperiods. High temperature induce dormancy in A. nemorosa and S. tuberosum, while in G. nivalis and A. ursinum the rest period at the end of the vegetative cycle, is not broken by temperature treatments. A. podagraria and C. rapunculoides respond with a different morphogenesis to different temperatures. Temperature change (in the controlled conditions from one constant temperature to another) induced subsequent stage development. Vernalization is essential for all the species under study. However the minimum temperature for vernalization and the duration of exposure at this temperature varies in different species. The life cycle observed of the various species may be considered as examples of different types of adaptation to a same environment.
