Advancing the understanding of children's digital engagement: responsive methodologies and ethical considerations in psychological research.

Children's perspectives and experiences with digital media (digital engagement for short) are becoming difficult to observe and measure in today's highly multi-faceted, personalized and dynamic media ecosystem. In response, psychologists are developing a host of innovative methods. These may be broadly divided into those which prioritize children's active participation in research and those which develop techniques for passive observation. This article presents a state-of-the-art review of emerging methodologies to highlight the ethical issues that arise, by drawing on the Belmont principles for ethical research. We identify strengths and weaknesses of both participatory and non-participatory methods and recommend ways for future research to harness the potential of child-centered, responsive, and ethical methods.

Validation of clinical simulation scenarios for the teaching of soft skills in child-centered care

Consultations with children and their families are complex and require soft skills. However, there is a gap in the medical curriculum concerning these skills, especially as encounter training is often adult-centered. We developed, validated, and applied simulation scenarios that prioritize active participation of children to train soft skills in child-centered care for undergraduate medical students. This is a methodological study to develop three scenarios and a checklist of what is expected. The content was validated by 18 experts. A pre-test was carried out for adjustments. Then, the simulations were applied and evaluated by 18 medical undergraduate students. They included the participation of 6 pediatric simulated patients aged 9–12 years trained by a drama teacher. According to the results, the scenarios and checklist proved to be valid instruments in content terms (ICV-I > 0.8). The scripts were followed by the simulated pediatric patients, but they had difficulty mimicking a hypoactive state. Some were anxious, but everyone enjoyed participating in the feedback. The simulated parents had difficulty participating and giving space to the child's speech. Participants assessed that the simulations performed as they were proposed and, after experimenting them, felt more prepared. The simulations provided an opportunity for students to practice soft skills by interacting with children in a safe environment. Using children as simulated patients is feasible but presents some challenges. Our study has expanded the ways in which children's health content can be taught. We are investigating whether this training leads to better patient outcomes in real clinical settings.

Construction and Assessment of the Physical Activity and Physical Education Importance for Parents Scale.

A recent systematic review reported positive associations between parents and children's physical activity participation. Moreover, parents' perceptions of the importance and value of physical activity can influence their children's participation in it. Our aim in this study was to develop and validate an instrument to assess parents' perceptions of the importance of physical activity and physical education. After first creating the instrument, we conducted content and exploratory factorial validation and reliability analyses of it with 93 parents (M age = 44.76, SD = 6.05, range = 31-66years; 73 females, 20 males). The result was a 9-item instrument, with items assessed on a 5-point Likert scale and grouped into three factors: (a) importance of physical education; (b) importance of engaging in physical activity or sport; and (c) importance of joining your children in physical activity or sport. In a second confirmatory factor analysis with 224 parents (M age = 44.53, SD = 6.07; 174 or 77.7% females and 50 or 22.3% males) we confirmed the factor validity and reliability previously analyzed (χ2 = 42.77, df = 24, p = .011, GFI = 0.96, NFI = 0.98, NNFI = 0.99, CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.06 (90% CI: 0,04, 0.08), SRMR = 0.04, ECVI = 0.04, CR = 0.70-0.87). Thus, the new Physical Activity and Physical Education Importance for Parents Scale (PAPEIPS) is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring parents' perceived importance of physical activity and physical education.

The inclusion of children in divorce mediation: A continental ‘non‐directive’ approach

AbstractThis article undertakes an interdisciplinary examination of child‐inclusive mediation (CIM) in divorce and separation mediation, particularly its implementation in the Czech Republic through the Mediation and Education Centre in Brno (MEDUC). It aims to offer a comparative analysis of MEDUC's unique non‐directive mediation model, which involves children's active participation in mediation processes, in contrast to the original Australian model of Child‐Inclusive Mediation and Counseling (CIMC). This paper uses a structured theoretical methodology combining comparative and conceptual analysis. Specifically, the comparative approach contrasts Australian and Czech practices and reveals key differences and similarities in legal frameworks, philosophical theories, and the roles of mediators and child specialists. Meanwhile, the conceptual analysis draws on an extensive literature review to explore the theoretical underpinnings of Australian and Czech family mediation approaches. The study identifies considerable flexibility in adapting CIP models in different legal and cultural settings. Although Australian practices heavily influence MEDUC, it has adapted these principles to fit its legal and cultural context. The article highlights the potential of combining human rights and therapeutic approaches, augmented by developmental psychology and international child rights standards, to create a more nuanced and child‐sensitive mediation practice. The article highlights the value of a multidisciplinary, adaptive approach to practice involving children in family mediation. It suggests that integrating psychological and legal‐philosophical theories can lead to a robust model that can be adapted to different cultural and legal settings. It advocates for future research to empirically evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of these adapted models and explore how cultural perceptions of childhood and family roles may influence the success of CIP.

Membangun Semangat Belajar Kelompok Pada Anak -Anak Di Panti Asuhan Cermin Kasih Abadi

Group study is one of the group activities most often carried out by students, namely group study. This activity is considered very useful because it has many benefits, such as increasing intelligence, teaching how to lead effective discussions and teaching how to interact with fellow students. This research aims to identify and implement effective strategies to create enthusiasm for group learning in orphanage children. This research involves the active participation of children in group learning activities, taking into account their individual needs. The author sees that by building enthusiasm for group learning in children at the orphanage, the mirror of eternal love shows that the formation of a positive learning environment, the application of interesting learning methods, and strong emotional support can increase the enthusiasm for group learning. Apart from that, this research also emphasizes the importance of orphanage caregivers in creating an environment that is conducive to learning. There are many ways to increase the learning enthusiasm of a group of children. The method used in the application of this program activity uses a casework method through general intervention stages consisting of Engagement Intake Contract, Assessment, plan/Planning, intervention, evaluation, Termination. The results of this activity are children's participation in group learning activities, better academic achievement and social interactions.

Implementation of Interactive Books Based on Local Wisdom and STEAM as Creative Learning in Islamic Early Childhood Education

<p><em>This research aims to investigate the implementation of interactive books based on local wisdom and STEAM as a creative learning tool in Islamic Early Childhood Education, through a case study method. The study was conducted at KB-TA Amanah Bunda Lawang, Malang, focusing on the local wisdom of East Javanese language and the theme of creating traditional toys for children. Data were obtained through observations, where 80% of the students were observed learning through interactive books using the STEAM approach, and 90% of the students actively engaged in creating loose part toys after the book was read. Furthermore, feedback from the students and teachers indicated that there is a need to synchronize the illustrations and text in the STEAM interactive book. These findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and further development needs regarding the implementation of interactive books based on local wisdom and STEAM in KB-TA Amanah Bunda Lawang. The research recommendations include the development of more visually integrated and culturally relevant STEAM interactive books, as well as the use of teaching methods that support children's creativity and active participation.</em></p>

Configurations of actual and perceived motor competence among elementary school children in China: differences in physical activity.

Actual motor competence (AMC) and perceived motor competence (PMC), as determinants of children's active participation in physical activity (PA), were important for children's healthy development. The correlation between the two had been confirmed. To further understand this relationship, this study investigated the current status of AMC, PMC, and PA in Chinese school-age children, used a person-centered approach to reveal the characteristics of the development of motor competence (MC) in Chinese school-age children and the differences in the level of PA among different MC profiles of children. A total of 532 children (age: M = 9.37, SD = 1.80 years-old) from grades 1 to 6 participated in this cross-sectional study (male, n = 284, 53.4%; female, n = 248, 46.6%). The Test of Gross Motor Development-3 (TGMD-3) was used to measure children's AMC, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence (PMSC) to measure children's PMC, and the revised Chinese version of Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) to assess children's PA levels. There were some gender differences in AMC but no significant gender differences in PMC and PA in children. AMC and PA levels increased as the children aged, while PMC showed some decline. Cluster analysis identified four groups of children with different MC profiles. Two groups of children had corresponding AMC and PMC levels (the "high-high" cluster, N = 200, 38.91%; the "low-low" cluster, N = 63, 12.26%), and the other two groups were inconsistent in AMC and PMC (the "high-low" cluster, N = 100, 19.46%; the "low-high" cluster, N = 151, 29.38%). Significant differences in PA levels were found between children with different MC profiles. The "high-high" cluster children had the highest PA levels, whereas the "low-low" cluster children demonstrated the lowest PA levels. AMC, PMC, and PA in Chinese school-age children were consistent with the pattern of child growth and development. Children with high AMC and high PMC usually had high levels of PA. Therefore, it was recommended to seize the best opportunity to intervene with children, and family, school, and community should synergize to help children improve AMC and PMC, and then actively participate in PA.

Revisiting Young Children's Technological Learning Behavior within a Microsystem Context for Development of the Next Generation

Children nowadays are more likely than earlier generations to understand, get along with, and be comfortable with technology. Compared to children from the past, children nowadays can find basic technology like a laptop or mobile phone with less difficulty. In addition, they can see how adults use those devices. Children may develop tighter and more frequent relationships with the instruments as a result of these aspects. This research intends to investigate how two children learn to use the available technology. The study adopts a qualitative research method. The data are collected by interviewing the parents of two children. The study discovers that, from the viewpoint of their parents, youngsters are unknowingly gaining information through technology through both individual and peer playing. They begin to learn how to share, analyze independently, work together, and internalize information from their peers through this playing and learning. Children also practice trial-and-error learning, in which they try things out, fail occasionally, and then figure things out. Children also learn how to stimulate their interest and satisfy their curiosity by gaining and examining new knowledge. The study also emphasizes the important functions of a few enabling elements, such as family support, children's active participation, the social dynamics at school, and the link between the family and the school.

Equity in Maths: Mechanisms Underlying the Sharpening of the Gender Gap

Given that early maths skills are crucial predictors of later academic success, the results from the latest maths SIMCE (System for Measurement of Quality in Education) are cause for alarm. These results reveal a concerning setback in gender equality in mathematical learning, particularly affecting girls from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds. Neuroscience indicates that both men and women share a similar biological basis for mathematical learning. Hence, the observed gender gap may be attributed to social beliefs associating mathematics more with masculinity than femininity. In Chile, studies have demonstrated that these beliefs are prevalent among teachers, families, and children as young as 5 years old, even more so than in other countries. It is also evident that these beliefs vary based on gender and SES. To design effective early interventions, it is crucial to understand the nature of these beliefs through genuine listening and active participation of children in research studies.

GAME TECHNOLOGIES IN SOCIAL WORK WITH CHILDREN AT RISK: BENEFITS AND DIFFICULTIES

The problem of using effective forms and methods of working with children at risk is relevant today. The purpose of the article is aimed at revealing the peculiarities of using game technologies in working with children at risk and separation of advantages and difficulties of their use at the present stage. To solve this goal, methods of analysis of literary sources, synthesis and generalization for clarification of key concepts of research, comparison of scientific approaches to the problem were used. Revealing the content of the key concept, it was concluded that children of the risk group is an unprotected social category of population, which are in difficult life circumstances, which prevents them from successfully socializing in society. Having studied the variety of approaches to the classification of children at risk, the division of children with a deviation in the distortion of moral standards and children, with deviations in the emotional and volitional spheres was taken. Determining the role of play in the socialization and development of children in the study presented the definition of "game technologies" as a set of forms, means, techniques of use of play in work with children. The most effective game technologies in social work with children at risk are investigated. Considering the subject of the stated problem, the peculiarities of the use of business game technology, technology of designing creative affairs, technology of plot and role-playing game and table technology are revealed. Based on the theoretical study, the advantages and difficulties of using game technologies in working with children at risk have been identified. Among the advantages of using game technologies in working with children at risk is: variability of game technologies; effectiveness of using game technologies with children at risk; interest and active participation of children in games; establishment of informal relationships between the participants of the game, the closeness of the game to living conditions. Among the difficulties is: the inappropriateness of using a particular game technology in a particular situation; the need for high preparedness of social workers during the game; creating a safe and favorable space for playing.

Parent-reported environmental factors and strategies to support home and community participation in children on the autism spectrum

Purpose Participating in home and community activities can be influenced by environmental factors and parent strategies. Children on the autism spectrum are reported to participate less in home and community activities than their neurotypical peers. Little is known about environmental factors that may influence their participation, and ways parents support their child’s participation. Materials and methods Parents of children on the autism spectrum aged 5–6 years (n = 72) and 10–11 years (n = 94) completed the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth. This study reports on the perceived support, barriers, and resources in the home and the community environment. Parents reported strategies they used to support their child’s participation in home and the community. Results Home environmental factors were identified as more supportive by the parents of younger children. The sensory quality of activities and social demands were factors identified as making community participation harder for both groups. Parents used a range of different strategies in the home and the community to support their child’s participation. Conclusions Identifying environmental barriers and supports to participation can assist in developing interventions to support meaningful participation in activities for children on the autism spectrum. Implications for rehabilitation Skills required for the activity and preferences of children on the autism spectrum are important considerations when supporting their participation in activities. When exploring a child’s level of participation, it may be helpful to ask parents about what their child can do with or without their support. The sensory quality of the environment is a consideration when supporting the participation of children on the autism spectrum in community activities. As sensory processing is an individual experience, the impact of sensory elements of the environment may differ for individuals.

Current status of research literature in the area of Well-being in Early Childhood

Early childhood is an important period in a child’s development. Despite the advances in child well-being research in the past decade, there are notably fewer studies involving young children, and even fewer ones where children are active participants. This mini-review summarises recently published work on the study of well-being in early childhood and provides recommendations on the future direction of research in this area. Most research on early childhood well-being is related to health promotion and parenting. These studies define well-being varyingly and employ diverse instruments to measure it. Only one study necessitated the active participation of children. Recommendations include operationally defining well-being, more research developing instruments and methods to measure well-being specifically for young children and including the active participation of children in well-being research regardless of age.

Multiple Meanings of Child Participation in Architecture and Planning: Revisiting the Participation Ladder

In literature, there are numerous studies on child participation and the levels of participation. However, the levels of child participation are categorized with different approaches among these studies. The aim of this article is to make a comparative analysis by examining the literature on the degrees of child participation and to systematize the concepts. Therefore, (i) bibliometric analysis and thematic mapping methods were conducted to identify various themes in academic studies in the field of child participation to understand the conceptual structure of the relevant literature that has changed over time; (ii) initiative reports suggesting different frameworks regarding participation degrees were also examined. These studies were categorized according to their definitions of participation degrees in a table. The table was structured from the lowest level of participation to the highest level, under three main typologies: non-participation, low-level participation, and true participation. It has been observed that all studies are concerned with ethical distinctions at the base level; consider lower levels of participation; and define methods that they consider as true participation. It was found that the levels and definitions in some studies were more inclusive and included several levels of participation simultaneously. However, the active participation of children in the processes and clarifying their actual roles are still vague issues. This study clarifies the boundaries of child participation in literature and serves as a basis for future studies investigating the degree of child participation in projects, which will help to uncover and develop the nature of practices involving child participation.

Perspectives of Swiss Paediatric Health Care Professionals on Factors Influencing Physical Activity Participation in Children with Disabilities

ABSTRACT Aim Investigation of the perspectives of paediatric health care professionals (PHCPs) in Switzerland regarding factors that influence participation in physical activity programs for children and adolescents with disabilities or chronic conditions (CADCCs). Evaluation of self-reported exercise counselling behavior of those professionals. Method A cross-sectional survey was used to collect the opinions of 171 PHCPs working with CADCCs using a structured questionnaire. The information obtained was evaluated by performing a combined quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis. Results PHCPs in Switzerland think that CADCC do not get enough physical activity and see the underlying reasons in lacking information/knowledge and organizational factors. We found that the level of knowledge about disability sports opportunities among PHCPs has a positive influence on their exercise counselling behaviour. Conclusions We propose three approaches to increase the level of physical activity in CADCC: Establishing personalized exercise counseling, intensifying information about disability sports programmes towards PHCPs, and improving inclusion and integration in PE lessons or regular sports clubs.

Impact of Age and School Instruction Mode on Children's Occupations Early in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Survey Study.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted participation in routines and daily activities. It is unclear how children reengaged in activities during the pandemic, particularly as a new school year began. Differences in school instruction mode (in person, hybrid, or remote) during the pandemic could further affect activity participation. To examine changes in sedentary and nonsedentary activity participation in children and to determine whether school instruction mode was associated with participation. Home-based survey of U.S. residents. Parents of 208 children (46.2% female) between ages 5 and 18 yr were surveyed at two waves: March through April 2020 and October 2020. Frequency of sedentary (indoor play, electronic device usage) and nonsedentary (outdoor play, leisure and extracurriculars) activity participation was observed. Descriptive and inferential statistics of the changes from Wave 1 to Wave 2 and linear regression were used to determine statistically significant variables associated with activity participation. Nonsedentary activity participation increased and sedentary activity decreased from Wave 1 to Wave 2. Instruction mode was statistically associated with nonsedentary, but not sedentary, participation. Negative mood, local COVID-19 severity, and household income were also associated with nonsedentary and sedentary participation. Children's participation in sedentary and nonsedentary activities normalized during the new school year; however, many factors likely contributed to these changes. What This Article Adds: Despite differences in school instruction mode and the influence of mental health early in the pandemic, children's nonsedentary activity participation increased. Occupational therapy practitioners can reinforce the importance of reengaging in activities and regular routines to promote health and well-being during challenging situations.

Myśl Janusza Korczaka/ Henryka Goldszmita w kontekście debat obywatelskich o edukacji w Polsce oraz dyskusji nad realizacją demokratycznych praw dziecka w edukacji

The article shows the conclusions of the debates on education that took place in Poland in 2017–2019, as a result of the crisis of the Polish school that citizens wanted to heal. The crisis in education continues, and it is not becoming more democratic as it has been further weakened by the trauma of the pandemic, economic and political control, and the effects of the war in Ukraine, which have exposed the collapse of the system even more. Conclusions from the debates, confronted with the universality of what Janusz Korczak/ Henryk Goldszmit wrote, show how extremely contemporary, after a turbulent five years, is the recognition of the school as a place of education to democracy and a place for students to experience democracy. Korczak also lived in difficult times leading to war, but despite the current affairs, he always emphasised the need to change in us – adults. He wrote about the changes necessary for the realisation of children’s rights and about the shortcomings of education provided by their guardians. For him, democracy meant partnership with the child in building social reality in which the process of learning democracy should not take place without the active participation of children, but on the contrary, with their active contribution. His thought is still an element of hope for change. Both civic debates and Korczak’s reflections show the need to return to the values of upbringing, supporting the development and partner dialogue in learning, in spite of, or rather because of the weaknesses of school as the institution with the aim of socialisation, in which democracy seems to be an unnecessary addition, despite declarations.

In the context of the external socio-cultural conditions in which the educational process takes place, adaptability, creativity and the ability to solve problems are often considered to be far more valuable qualities than the accumulated knowledge in a given field. To develop these qualities in adolescents, teachers need to develop different strategies to engage and hold the attention of the world's young people. One of the interactive techniques that ensure the active participation of children in the learning process is the game. The article offers a practical methodological idea for applying a similar method to Bulgarian language classes in the fifth grade and draws conclusions based on the observations made.

Peningkatan Kreativitas Anak Usia Dini melalui Permainan sebagai Edukasi Media Belajar Kreatif di PAUD Kabupaten Karawang

Kindergarten (PAUD) as a second learning vehicle after the family environment for early childhood, gives a distinct impression for those who experience it. As a place to play while learning that is full of educational values, it should provide varied learning. Especially in the current digital era, early childhood learning media must also be developed. This is the reason we carry out Community Service (PkM) activities targeting early childhood children in an early childhood education center located in Ciparagejaya village, Karawang district. Its location close to the coast, becomes a learning vehicle for the people who are there. Therefore, we also carried out PkM activities with the title "Improving Early Childhood Creativity through Games as Creative Learning Media Education in PAUD Ciparagejaya Village, Karawang Regency". The purpose of implementing PkM is to increase the creativity of early childhood in the PAUD environment through creative learning media education. The PkM method used is the roleplay method and the participatory method, where children are directly involved in learning activities through games as a form of creative learning media education. The results obtained indicate the active participation of children in the learning process, train children's creativity through creative learning media stimuli, and instill moral values in the form of honesty, self-confidence, as well as perseverance and enthusiasm for learning.

Children's Olfactory Picturebooks: Charting New Trends in Early Childhood Education.

Converging global trends (digitization, globalization, datafication) have influenced all aspects of children's literacies, including children's picturebooks. The recent turn towards embodied, affective and sensory literacies, stimulated our interest in multisensory picturebooks that engage all children's senses, including the sense of smell (olfaction). Olfactory children's picturebooks demand new forms of literary conversations, which capitalise on unique properties of odours and integrate these with stories. Drawing on a systematic search of children's picturebooks about, and with, smell, in paper-based and digital formats, we identified three principal ways in which olfaction is currently embedded in children's picturebooks: 1, as an add-on to depiction of objects (including foods, plants) and places, 2, as a device to introduce humour into a story, and 3, as an engagement tool for children's active participation in the story. We mobilise Sipe's (2008) concept of seven constituting elements in children's picturebooks to describe how current olfactory picturebooks apply the elements in their design and make recommendations for future development of children's olfactory picturebooks. Reflecting on the generative potential of literary theories and olfactory power to stimulate children's non-linguistic embodied interactions with picturebooks, we propose some extensions to the current olfactory picturebook landscape.

Sports injuries in children and adolescents

Due to active participation of children and adolescents in school sports as well as in club sports, sporting injuries in childhood are common. Because skeletal maturity is not yet complete, injury patterns in children differ from sporting injuries in adults. Knowledge of the pathophysiologic characteristics, as well as knowledge of typical injury sequelae, is of great relevance to radiologists. This review article therefore deals with common acute and chronic sporting injuries in children. Basic diagnostic imaging comprises conventional X‑ray imaging in two planes. In addition, sonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are used. Close consultation with clinical colleagues and knowledge of childhood-specific injuries help identify sports-associated trauma sequelae.
