Metal-free N, P-Codoped Carbon for Syngas Production with Tunable Composition via CO2 Electrolysis: Addressing the Competition Between CO2 Reduction and H2 Evolution.

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide into value-added fine chemicals is a promising technique to realize the carbon cycle. Recently, metal-free heteroatom doped carbons are proposed as promising cost-effective electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the lack of understanding of the active site prevents the realization of a high-performance electrocatalyst for the CO2RR. Herein, we synthesized metal-free N, P co-doped carbons (NPCs) for producing syngas, which is composed of H2 and CO, by CO2 electrolysis using inexpensive bio-based raw materials via simple pyrolysis. The syngas ratio (H2/CO) can be controlled within the high demand range (0.3-4) at low potentials using NPCs by tuning the N and P contents. In comparison with only N doping or P doping, N and P co-doping has a positive impact on improving CO2RR activity. Experimental analysis and density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations revealed that negatively charged C atoms adjacent to N and P atoms are the most favorable active sites for CO2-to-CO conversion compared to pyridinic N on N, P co-doped carbon. Introducing N atoms generates the preferable CO2 adsorption site, and P atoms contribute to decreasing the Gibbs free energy barrier for key *COOH intermediates adsorbed on the negatively charged C atoms.

Copper Nanoclusters Imparted Metalloporphyrin Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction.

Strategies that can introduce catalytic auxiliary into electrocatalysts to boost the performance of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are meaningful in exploring hybrid electrocatalytic systems. Here, a series of hybrid electrocatalysts (Cu NCs@MOF-545-M, M=Fe, Co and Ni) have been prepared by assembly Cu NCs with MOF-545-M (M=Fe, Co and Ni) and successfully applied in electrocatalytic CO2RR. In the obtained MOF-545-M (M=Fe, Co and Ni), the integration of Cu NCs with MOF-545-M (M=Fe, Co and Ni) can create a hybrid electrocatalytic system that enhances the charge transfer efficiency and electrocatalytic CO2RR activity. Specifically, the optimal Cu NCs@MOF-545-Co presents remarkable FECO over a wide potential range (-0.7 V to -1.0 V), high CO generation rate (8.2 mol m-2 h-1) and excellent maximum energy efficiency (69 %, -0.7 V), which is superior to Cu NCs and MOF-545-Co, and represented to be one of the best performances to date. This work demonstrates a facile approach to significantly improve the FECO by loading metal nanoclusters into MOFs, providing a valuable reference for future studies on hybridization strategies to enhance the performance of electrocatalysts.

Strategy for Enhancing Catalytic Active Site: Introduction of 1D material InSeI for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate.

The presence of oxygen vacancies (Vo) in electrocatalysts plays a significant role in improving the selectivity and activity of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this study, 1D material with large surface area is utilized to enable uniform Vo formation on the catalyst. 1D structured indium selenoiodide (InSeI) is synthesized and used as an electrocatalyst for the conversion of CO2 to formate. The electrochemical treatment of InSeI leads to the leaching of Se and I from the catalyst surface and the formation of Vo. The resulting Vo promotes the activity of the CO2RR, which increases the local pH of the catalyst surface and chemically maintains the oxidized metal sites on the catalyst. Owing to these characteristics, activated In wire exhibited remarkable CO2RR activity, thereby surpassing 93% FEformate at 500mA cm-2, with a maximum of 97.3% FEformate at 100mA cm-2. Moreover, the catalytic activity remained consistent for over 50h at 100mA cm-2 (FEformate >88%). Thus, the findings imply that using 1D materials can facilitate the formation of oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface and improve the selectivity and durability of CO2RR. This indicates the potential for further research on 1D materials as electrocatalysts.

Understanding the Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction Mechanism of Lattice Tuning of Copper by Silver Single-Crystal Surface.

Intermolecular interactions and adsorbate coverage on a metal electrode's surface/interface play an important role in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Herein, the activity and selectivity of CO2RR on bimetallic electrode, where a full monoatomic Cu layer covers on Ag surface (CuML/Ag) are investigated by using density functional theory calculations. The surface geometric and electronic structure results indicate that there is high electrocatalytic activity for CO2RR on the CuML/Ag electrode. Specifically, the CuML/Ag surface can accelerate the H2O and CO2 adsorption and hydrogenation while lowering the reaction energy of the rate-determining step. The structure parameters of chemisorbed CO2 with and without H2O demonstrate that activated H2O not only promotes the C-O dissociation but also provides the protons required for CO2RR on the CuML/Ag electrode surface. Furthermore, the various reaction mechanism diagrams indicate that the CuML/Ag electrode has high selectivity for CO2RR, and the efficiency of products can be regulated by modulating the reaction's electric potential.

A copper porphyrin-derived metal-organic framework electrocatalyst, FICN-8, was synthesized and its catalytic activity for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) was investigated. FICN-8 selectively catalyzed electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO in anhydrous acetonitrile electrolyte. However, formic acid became the dominant CO2RR product with the addition of a proton source to the system. Mechanistic studies revealed the change of major reduction pathway upon proton source addition, while catalyst-bound hydride (*H) species was proposed as the key intermediate for formic acid production. This work highlights the importance of electrolyte composition on CO2RR product selectivity.

Harnessing in-situ oxidation of nanostructured mxene to modulate the electronic structure for improved selectivity for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising approach to valorizing CO2. Ti3C2TX as a support material has received significant interest in enhancing CO2RR performance for tuning the electronic structure. However, there has been relatively less focus on changes to the Ti3C2TX electronic structure induced by loading catalysts onto the Ti3C2TX. Because Ti3C2TX has an intrinsic activity for both CO2RR and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), electronic structure changes can affect the balance between CO2RR and HER selectivity. Therefore, tuning the electronic structure of Ti3C2TX can control the competition between CO2RR and HER and tune the selectivity and activity. Herein, we report that Ti3C2TX’s electronic structure can be tuned by the Ag+ loading method via redox interactions, tuning the reaction selectivity and activity for CO2RR. To illustrate this effect, we compare the CO2RR performance of in-situ formed Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on Ti3C2TX (0.9Ag-IS-Ti3C2TX) with physically mixed Ag NPs and Ti3C2TX (0.9Ag/P/Ti3C2TX). Here, ‘0.9’ refers to the molar ratio between Ag precursor and Ti3C2Tx, and ‘IS’ vs. ‘P’ refers to in-situ formed vs. physically mixed Ag NPs. 0.9Ag-IS-Ti3C2TX demonstrates a higher oxidation state for Ti and a higher proportion of Ti-O bonds than 0.9Ag/P/Ti3C2TX. Compared to 0.9Ag/P/Ti3C2TX, 0.9Ag-IS-Ti3C2TX exhibits higher CO Faradaic efficiency (FE), rising from 8.1 % with a partial current density of −2.0 mA cm−2 to 49.6 % with a partial current density of −20.1 mA cm−2 at −1.4 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode). To harness this effect, we demonstrate control over the CO: H2 ratio of syngas formed from CO2RR over our Ti3C2TX-supported catalysts. Further electrochemical anodic oxidation experiments reveal the critical oxidation potential of Ti3C2TX (0.8 V vs. RHE) and show that HER can be partially suppressed by partial oxidation of Ti3C2TX. This work highlights the importance of considering the changes in Ti3C2TX (and other) supports when supporting catalysts for CO2RR and other electrochemical reactions.

Data-Driven Design of Single-Atom Electrocatalysts with Intrinsic Descriptors for Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction

The strategic manipulation of the interaction between a central metal atom and its coordinating environment in single-atom catalysts (SACs) is crucial for catalyzing the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, it remains a major challenge. While density-functional theory calculations serve as a powerful tool for catalyst screening, their time-consuming nature poses limitations. This paper presents a machine learning (ML) model based on easily accessible intrinsic descriptors to enable rapid, cost-effective, and high-throughput screening of efficient SACs in complex systems. Our ML model comprehensively captures the influences of interactions between 3 and 5d metal centers and 8 C, N-based coordination environments on CO2RR activity and selectivity. We reveal the electronic origin of the different activity trends observed in early and late transition metals during coordination with N atoms. The extreme gradient boosting regression model shows optimal performance in predicting binding energy and limiting potential for both HCOOH and CO production. We confirm that the product of the electronegativity and the valence electron number of metals, the radius of metals, and the average electronegativity of neighboring coordination atoms are the critical intrinsic factors determining CO2RR activity. Our developed ML models successfully predict several high-performance SACs beyond the existing database, demonstrating their potential applicability to other systems. This work provides insights into the low-cost and rational design of high-performance SACs.

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer on Cu2O/Ti3C2Tx MXene for Propane (C3H8) Synthesis from Electrochemical CO2 Reduction.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce value-added multi-carbon chemicals has been an appealing approach to achieving environmentally friendly carbon neutrality in recent years. Despite extensive research focusing on the use of CO2 to produce high-value chemicals like high-energy-density hydrocarbons, there have been few reports on the production of propane (C3H8), which requires carbon chain elongation and protonation. A rationally designed 0D/2D hybrid Cu2O anchored-Ti3C2Tx MXene catalyst (Cu2O/MXene) is demonstrated with efficient CO2RR activity in an aqueous electrolyte to produce C3H8. As a result, a significantly high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 3.3% is achieved for the synthesis of C3H8 via the CO2RR with Cu2O/MXene, which is ≈26 times higher than that of Cu/MXene prepared by the same hydrothermal process without NH4OH solution. Based on in-situ attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is proposed that the significant electrocatalytic conversion originated from the synergistic behavior of the Cu2O nanoparticles, which bound the *C2 intermediates, and the MXene that bound the *CO coupling to the C3 intermediate. The results disclose that the rationally designed MXene-based hybrid catalyst facilitates multi-carbon coupling as well as protonation, thereby manipulating the CO2RR pathway.

Theoretical study on the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance of MoS2-supported Ni single atoms with transition metal substrate doping

In the context of increasing energy issues and climate change, the development of electrochemical CO2 reduction strategies using single atom catalysts (SACs) presents a viable solution by converting CO2 into high-value-added products. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as the main candidates for SACs in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) catalysts. The regulation of the second coordination sphere of SACs is known to modulate their electronic structure and catalytic behavior. This study delves into the effect of transition metal-doped substrates on SACs. We employed spin-polarization density functional theory (DFT) to design a series of Ni/TM-MoS2 monolayer MoS2 materials, with transition metals (including Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt and Au) substituting the Mo atoms and anchoring single atom Ni. Among them, six Ni/TM-MoS2 catalysts doped with Mn, Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, and Ir demonstrate enhanced CO2RR activity and selectivity when compared to unmodified Ni/MoS2. The Ni/Ru-MoS2 SAC exhibits the best catalytic activity and selectivity for formic acid production, with a limiting potential (UL) of -0.06 V. The incorporation of the metal-doped substrate lowers the work function of the catalyst, facilitating electron transfer and reaction progression. Furthermore, a volcanic relationship was observed between the work function and UL. This study provides strategic insights into the design and development of SACs, highlighting the potential for future modifications and applications.

Sulfur Modified Copper Nitride for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Reaction

Metallic copper has been attracted attention as efficient catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the activity of the catalyst with a single adsorption site is limited by the imbalance of the intermediate binding energy, so-called “scaling relationship”. [1] Therefore, it is crucial to break the scaling relationship between reaction intermediates in order to increase product selectivity and lower overpotential. One of the candidates to overcome this scaling relationship is metal sulfide. According to the computational study, since sulfur atoms work as an adsorption site, metal sulfide is expected to be a suitable catalyst for CO2RR with multiple adsorption sites.[2] In addition, surface modification by sulfur is also effective approach to enhance product selectivity in CO2RR. Increase of formate (HCOO-) selectivity by sulfur introduction on Cu has been reported in some previous reports.[3]-[5] On the other hand, the repulsion between the oxygen lone pair electrons of the CO2 molecule and the electronic clouds of the surface sulfur atoms become an obstacle on CO2RR.[6] A potential solution to this problem is the construction of sulfide-nitride composite. Because of the difference in electronegativity between nitrogen and metal or sulfur, it is considered that the electronic structure of the metal sulfide is altered to reduce the repulsion between oxygen and sulfur.[7] Based on these backgrounds, it is expected that the CO2RR activity of copper nitride (Cu3N) will be enhanced by sulfur introduction.Here, sulfur modified Cu3N with different amount of sulfur were synthesized by reflux method with some modification of previously reported method.[8] X-ray diffraction pattern and SEM-EDX elemental analysis result indicate that the sulfur ratio increases and copper sulfide (Cu2S) crystal phase appears with the amount of sulfur source precursor. CO2RR activity was evaluated in 0.1M KHCO3 electrolyte, and volcano trend was identified between the amount of sulfur and methane selectivity. Among all the catalysts including pure Cu3N and Cu2S which were synthesized by the same method, 4.2 mol% sulfur containing Cu3N showed the highest methane faradaic efficiency (41.4 %). This faradaic efficiency is more than 10 times higher than that of Cu3N (0.48 %) and Cu2S (1.3 %). This finding offers valuable insights into the sulfur role on the modified catalyst.

(Invited) Atomically Dispersed Metal Electrocatalysts for CO2 to CO Conversion: From Single to Dual Metal Sites

Carbon-supported nitrogen-coordinated single-metal site catalysts (i.e., M−N−C, M: Fe, Co, or Ni) are active for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to CO.(1) We comprehensively engineered FeN4 and NiNx sites for electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO considering the particle sizes of the catalysts, metal content, and the M−N (M: Fe or Ni) bond structures.(2, 3)The unique M-N-C model allows us to elucidate each factor′s role exclusively regarding the promotion of CO2 reduction.(4)Optimal particle sizes and Fe content provide favorable external factors to improve mass activity. Structural changes of M−N bonds controlled by thermal activation temperatures can intrinsically enhance CO selectivity and kinetic activity. Notably, the NiN3 active sites with optimal local structures formed at higher temperatures (e.g., 1200 °C) are intrinsically more active and CO-selective than NiN4, providing a new opportunity to design a highly active catalyst via populating NiN3 sites with increased density. Further improving their intrinsic activity and selectivity by tuning their N−M bond structures and coordination is limited. We further expand the coordination environments of M−N−C catalysts by designing dual-metal active sites.(5)The Ni-Fe catalyst exhibited the most efficient CO2RR activity and promising stability compared to other combinations. Advanced structural characterization and theoretical prediction suggest that the most active N-coordinated dual-metal site configurations are 2N-bridged (Fe-Ni)N6, in which FeN4 and NiN4 moieties are shared with two N atoms. Quantitative Analysis and Manipulation of Alkali Metal Cations at the Cathode Surface in Membrane Electrode Assembly Electrolyzers for CO2 Reduction Reactions.

The stable operation of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers is known to be hindered by the accumulation of bicarbonate salt, which are derived from alkali metal cations in anolytes, on the cathode side. In this study, we conducted a quantitative evaluation of the correlation between the CO2RR activity and the transported alkali metal cations in MEA electrolyzers. As a result, although the presence of transported alkali metal cations on the cathode surface significantly contributes to the generation of C2+ compounds, the rate of K+ ion transport did not match the selectivity of C2+, suggesting that a continuous supply of high amount of K+ to the cathode surface is not required for C2+ formation. Based on these findings, we achieved a faradaic efficiency (FE) and a partial current density for C2+ of 77 % and 230 mA cm-2, respectively, even after switching the anode solution from 0.1 M KHCO3 to a dilute K+ solution (<7 mM). These values were almost identical to those when 0.1 M KHCO3 was continuously supplied. Based on this insight, we successfully improved the durability of the system against salt precipitation by intermittently supplying concentrated KHCO3, compared with the continuous supply.

Trilayer Polymer Electrolytes Enable Carbon-Efficient CO2 to Multicarbon Product Conversion in Alkaline Electrolyzers.

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is an appealing method for carbon utilization. Alkaline CO2 electrolyzers exhibit high CO2RR activity, low full-cell voltages, and cost-effectiveness. However, the issue of CO2 loss caused by (bi)carbonate formation leads to excessive energy consumption, rendering the process economically impractical. In this study, we propose a trilayer polymer electrolyte (TPE) comprising a perforated anion exchange membrane (PAEM) and a bipolar membrane (BPM) to facilitate alkaline CO2RR. This TPE enables the coexistence of high alkalinity near the catalyst surface and the H+ flux at the interface between the PAEM and the cation exchange layer (CEL) of the BPM, conditions favoring both CO2 reduction to multicarbon products and (bi)carbonate removal in KOH-fed membrane electrode assembly (MEA) reactors. As a result, we achieve a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of approximately 46 % for C2H4, corresponding to a C2+ FE of 64 % at 260 mA cm-2, with a CO2-to-C2H4 single-pass conversion (SPC) of approximately 32 % at 140 mA cm-2-nearly 1.3 times the limiting SPC in conventional AEM-MEA electrolyzers. Furthermore, coupling CO2 reduction with formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) in the TPE-MEA electrolyzer reduces the full-cell voltage to 2.3 V at 100 mA cm-2 without compromising the C2H4 FE.

Molecular Engineering of Porous Fe-N-C Catalyst with Sulfur Incorporation for Boosting CO2 Reduction and Zn-CO2 Battery.

Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts have emerged as promising candidates for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) due to their uniform active sites and high atomic utilization rate. However, poor efficiency at low overpotentials and unclear reaction mechanisms limit the application of M-N-C catalysts. In this study, Fe-N-C catalysts are developed by incorporating S atoms onto ordered hierarchical porous carbon substrates with a molecular iron thiophenoporphyrin. The well-prepared FeSNC catalyst exhibits superior CO2RR activity and stability, attributes to an optimized electronic environment, and enhances the adsorption of reaction intermediates. It displays the highest CO selectivity of 94.0% at -0.58V (versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and achieves the highest partial current density of 13.64mA cm-2 at -0.88V. Furthermore, when employed as the cathode in a Zn-CO2 battery, FeSNC achieves a high-power density of 1.19mW cm-2 and stable charge-discharge cycles. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the incorporation of S atoms into the hierarchical porous carbon substrate led to the iron center becoming more electron-rich, consequently improving the adsorption of the crucial reaction intermediate *COOH. This study underscores the significance of hierarchical porous structures and heteroatom doping for advancing electrocatalytic CO2RR and energy storage technologies.

Cobalt-Doped Bismuth Nanosheet Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Electrolyte-Free Formic Acid.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) to valuable liquid fuels, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-) is a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Enhancing CO2RR activity while retaining high selectivity is critical for commercialization. To address this, we developed metal-doped bismuth (Bi) nanosheets via a facile hydrolysis method. These doped nanosheets efficiently generated high-purity HCOOH using a porous solid electrolyte (PSE) layer. Among the evaluated metal-doped Bi catalysts, Co-doped Bi demonstrated improved CO2RR performance compared to pristine Bi, achieving ~90 % HCOO- selectivity and boosted activity with a low overpotential of ~1.0 V at a current density of 200 mA cm-2. In a solid electrolyte reactor, Co-doped Bi maintained HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of ~72 % after a 100-hour operation under a current density of 100 mA cm-2, generating 0.1 M HCOOH at 3.2 V. Density functional theory (DFT) results revealed that Co-doped Bi required a lower applied potential for HCOOH generation from CO2, due to stronger binding energy to the key intermediates OCHO* compared to pure Bi. This study shows that metal doping in Bi nanosheets modifies the chemical composition, element distribution, and morphology, improving CO2RR catalytic activity performance by tuning surface adsorption affinity and reactivity.

Promises of MOF‐Based and MOF‐Derived Materials for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

AbstractElectrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) powered by renewable electricity is a promising technology to mitigate carbon emissions and lessen the dependence on fossil fuels toward a carbon‐neutral energy cycle. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives, due to their excellent intrinsic activity, have emerged as promising materials for the ECR to high‐demand products. However, challenges such as unsatisfactory energy efficiency, selectivity, and relatively low production rates hinder their industrial scalability. Here, a comprehensive and critical review is presented that summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art progress in MOF‐based and MOF‐derived CO2 electroreduction catalysts from design and functionality perspectives. The fundamentals of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over heterogeneous catalysts, reaction mechanisms, and key challenges faced by ECR are described first to establish a solid foundation for forthcoming in‐depth analyses. MOF's building blocks, properties, and shortcomings pertinent to ECR including low conductivity and stability, are systematically discussed. Moreover, comprehensive discussions are provided on MOF‐based and MOF‐derived catalysts design, fabrication, characterization, and CO2RR activity to pinpoint the intricate structure‐property‐performance relationship. Finally, promising recommendations are put forward for enhancing MOF electrocatalysts activity, selectivity, and durability. This work may serve as a guideline for developing high‐performance MOF‐related catalysts for CO2RR, benefiting researchers working in this growing and potentially game‐changing area.

Gas-phase electrochemical CO2 reduction on silver-copper BTC MOF in a zero-gap membrane electrode assembly

Bimetallic AgCu-BTC MOFs, derived from Cu-BTC (HKUST-1), have been synthesized by fast co-precipitation method and evaluated for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) using humidified CO2 gas in a zero-gap configuration. Three compositions with varying Ag content – AgCu-1 (9.4 at.%), AgCu-2 (12.5 at.%), and AgCu-3 (16.5 at.%) – were characterized by SEM-EDS, PXRD, FTIR, and XPS. These structural analyzes confirmed the formation of a low-crystalline AgCu-BTC MOF with Ag+1 ions coordinated to the BTC framework. Electrochemical tests (CV and LSV) revealed that AgCu-3 MOF, with the highest Ag content (16.5 at.%), exhibited a more positive onset potential at -0.65 V vs Ag/AgCl compared to HKUST-1 MOF, indicating enhanced CO2RR activity, owing to Ag incorporation. Constant potential (CP) experiments showed that AgCu-3 MOF predominantly produced CO and H2, achieving faradaic efficiency of approximately 65 % for CO production and 5 % for H2 production. Moreover, lowering the relative humidity (RH%) in the inlet CO2 gas stream from 80% to 20% increased CO production by 2-fold from 6.2 µmol s-1 cm-2 to 13 µmol s-1 cm-2, simultaneously suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This reduction in humidity resulted in an increased local concentration of CO2 at the catalyst site, leading to an enhanced CO2RR rate. However, substantial morphological changes have been observed in the AgCu-3 MOF after the CP experiment under humid CO2 reduction conditions.

Understanding the Temperature Effect on Carbon‐Carbon Coupling during CO2 and CO Electroreduction in Zero‐Gap Electrolyzers†

Comprehensive SummaryCu‐catalyzed electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and CO reduction reaction (CORR) are of great interest due to their potential to produce carbon‐neutral and value‐added multicarbon (C2+) chemicals. In practice, CO2RR and CORR are typically operated at industrially relevant current densities, making the process exothermal. Although the increased operation temperature is known to affect the performance of CO2RR and CORR, the relationship between temperatures and kinetic parameters was not clearly elaborated, particularly in zero‐gap reactors. In this study, we detail the effect of the temperature on Cu‐catalyzed CO2RR and CORR. Our electrochemical and operando spectroscopic studies show that high temperatures increase the activity of CO2RR to CO and CORR to C2H4 by enhancing the mass transfer of CO2 and CO. As the rates of these two processes are highly influenced by reactant diffusion, elevating the operating temperature results in high local CO2 and CO availability to accelerate product formation. Consequently, the *CO coverage in both cases increases at higher temperatures. However, under CO2RR conditions, *CO desorption is more favorable than carbon‐carbon (C—C) coupling thermodynamically at high temperatures, causing the reduction in the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of C2H4. In CORR, the high‐temperature‐augmented CO diffusion overcomes the unfavorable adsorption thermodynamics, increasing the probability of C—C coupling.
