Charting Progress in the Science of Technical Assistance for Implementation of Evidence-Based Interventions.

Technical assistance (TA) has long been a strategy utilized to support implementation of a range of different evidence-based interventions within clinical, community and other service settings. Great progress has come in extending the evidence base to support TA's use across multiple contexts, the result of more extensive categorizing of implementation strategies to support systematic studies of their effectiveness in facilitating successful implementation. This commentary builds on that progress to suggest several opportunities for future investigation and collaborative activity among researchers, practitioners, policymakers and other key decision-makers in hopes of continuing to build the success highlighted in this special issue and elsewhere. Authors call for increased attention to operationalization and tailoring of TA, considering how TA services can be sustained over time and how to consider externally-provided TA versus that housed within an organization. In addition, the commentary suggests a few key areas for capacity-building that can increase the quality, reach, and impact of TA for the future.

Promoting physical activity among cancer survivors through general practice: a realist review.

Multiple studies have shown that physical activity improves cancer survivorship, by decreasing risk of second primary cancers and chronic conditions. However, cancer survivor physical activity levels remain low. General practice presents more opportunities for lifestyle interventions, such as increasing physical activity. We conducted a realist review of physical activity interventions relevant to general practice. A total of 9728 studies were obtained from a systematic search of the CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and SPORTDiscus databases from the inception of the electronic database to 21 June 2024. We focussed on intervention studies that improved physical activity among cancer survivors and were relevant to general practice. Data extraction focussed on: what makes physical activity interventions effective for cancer survivors (what works) and what factors promote physical activity for cancer survivors (for whom it works). Thirty-seven studies were used to generate themes on the components of physical activity interventions that are likely to work and for whom; these studies facilitated goal setting, action planning, self-monitoring, social support, and shaping of knowledge; through delivering tailored motivational support, evoking a teachable moment, and promoting the use of self-monitoring tools. Interventions that were cost-effective and easily implementable improved sustainability, deployability, and uptake by cancer survivors. Cancer survivor psychological and physical factors, such as baseline motivational levels and post-treatment symptoms, influenced the uptake of physical activity interventions. Our realist review has highlighted opportunities for general practices to promote physical activity among cancer survivors through collaborative goal setting, action planning, self-monitoring, social support, and shaping of knowledge.

Improving student learning outcomes on SPLDV material using the Problem Based Learning model in class IX H SMPN 6 Surabaya

The problem based learning model is expected to be effective in enabling students to find solutions and solve their own problems, thereby increasing conceptual understanding of SPLDV material. The aim of this research is to find out how much influence the problem based learning model has on SPLDV material which can improve student learning outcomes at SMPN 6 Surabaya. This research uses the PBL method. The design of this research is a single case study, namely an experimental design by providing treatment to a small group and a large group. The results of data processing using the influence of the PBL learning model on the learning outcomes of conflict resources and social integration at SMPN 6 Surabaya. The result is the use of a problem-based learning model that involves sources of conflict which will improve student learning outcomes at SMPN 6 Surabaya. The use of the PBL learning model for learning outcomes related to SPLDV material at SMPN 6 Surabaya is classified as good, this can be seen from the average pre-cycle score carried out by individuals, namely 85.18, the average LKPD score is 1 learning outcome for small group students consisting of 2 participants. students is 85.90 and the average score for LKPD 2 student learning outcomes for a large group of 6 students is 99.09. In the collaborative classroom action research carried out it can be declared successful because there is an average increase in pre-cycle, cycle 1 and cycle 2 in learning outcomes.

Antimicrobial Resistance: What Lies Beneath This Complex Phenomenon?

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has evolved from a mere concern into a significant global threat, with profound implications for public health, healthcare systems, and the global economy. Since the introduction of antibiotics between 1945 and 1963, their widespread and often indiscriminate use in human medicine, agriculture, and animal husbandry has led to the emergence and rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant genes. Bacteria have developed sophisticated mechanisms to evade the effects of antibiotics, including drug uptake limitation, drug degradation, target modification, efflux pumps, biofilm formation, and outer membrane vesicles production. As a result, AMR now poses a threat comparable to climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic, and projections suggest that death rates will be up to 10 million deaths annually by 2050, along with a staggering economic cost exceeding $100 trillion. Addressing AMR requires a multifaceted approach, including the development of new antibiotics, alternative therapies, and a significant shift in antibiotic usage and regulation. Enhancing global surveillance systems, increasing public awareness, and prioritizing investments in research, diagnostics, and vaccines are critical steps. By recognizing the gravity of the AMR threat and committing to collaborative action, its impact can be mitigated, and global health can be protected for future generations.

Jacqueline Audry’s Colette films: post-war quality style with a feminist edge

ABSTRACT Jacqueline Audry was that rare phenomenon, a woman film director in mid-twentieth century France. Drawn to Colette’s work by her appreciation of the latter’s style and close affinity with her values, Audry fought the initial reluctance of producers and went on to make three films based on Colette’s fictions, all with the author’s approval and the first, Gigi (1949), with her active collaboration. Very much in the ‘quality’ style, these entertaining costume dramas set in the prosperous, liberal era of the Belle Époque gave cinematic form to Colette’s stylistic verve and implicitly feminist philosophy. Audry’s Colette films tell stories of young women on a quest for self-realisation against the constraints of a patriarchal society and are laced with an (often humorous) irony in their representation of gender roles. Audry’s case, this article aims to show, demonstrates that the quality style so reviled by the New Wave could in fact be a form of cinema that effectively combined popular appeal with the seriousness of a subtly progressive feminist politics.

Human-Centered AI Applications for Canada’s Immigration Settlement Sector

While AI has been frequently applied in the context of immigration, most of these applications focus on selection and screening, which primarily serve to empower states and authorities, raising concerns due to their understudied reliability and high impact on immigrants' lives. In contrast, this paper emphasizes the potential of AI in Canada’s immigration settlement phase, a stage where access to information is crucial and service providers are overburdened. By highlighting the settlement sector as a prime candidate for reliable AI applications, we demonstrate its unique capacity to empower immigrants directly, yet it remains under-explored in AI research. We outline a vision for human-centred and responsible AI solutions that facilitate the integration of newcomers. We call on AI researchers to build upon our work and engage in multidisciplinary research and active collaboration with service providers and government organizations to develop tailored AI tools that are empowering, inclusive and safe.

Evaluating access during change: A qualitative exploration of access impacts to Canadian primary care rehabilitation providers during the COVID-19 pandemic

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic required substantial changes in delivery of team-based primary care, impacting both how and which patients accessed the more comprehensive services teams provide. We sought to explore changes in access to primary care rehabilitation services during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic to identify potential new problems and improvements. MethodsIn this longitudinal study, sixteen rehabilitation professionals working on primary care teams in Manitoba and Ontario recorded audio-diaries and later participated in interviews throughout the first year of the pandemic. Qualitative analysis included data immersion, coding to identify the practice changes and associated access impacts, then applying Levesque and colleagues’ Patient-Centred Access to Healthcare framework to interpret findings. FindingsParticipants described service changes that both enhanced and reduced access, including redeployment, outreach, virtual care, discontinuation of some services and start of new ones, and new risk management strategies. Some implied equity-specific impacts. Virtual care and outreach activities created access for patient populations who previously may have been underserved, while virtual care, redeployment, and new risk management activities created new access barriers and inequities, leaving some patients completely unable to reach care. Changes to team collaboration activities could help or hinder access. ConclusionContinuing outreach activities, strengthening team collaboration, and thoughtfully integrating virtual care can improve access to comprehensive primary care. As the primary care sector works to recover from pandemic impacts and address population health needs, applying a patient-centred access framework during practice redesign offers a meaningful way to strengthen services.

Collaboration between a veterinary laboratory and a clinical cytogenetics laboratory

Abstract Introduction/Objective One major issue facing pig breeders is the presence of karyotypic abnormalities which reduce fertility. Karyotypic abnormalities may also persist in breeding population increasing the magnitude of lost animal production over time. Assessment of porcine chromosomes is a valuable service to be offered to the livestock industry. Methods/Case Report Chromosome testing of young boars prior to breeding is mandatory in France and much of Western Europe. Such testing is not common in the USA even though chromosome abnormalities are known to exist in swine breeding populations. Due to the lack of this service in the US, we established a collaboration between a clinical cytogenetics laboratory and a veterinary laboratory to validate and offer karyotype testing for breeder boards. To established this service Kuster Research and Consulting, Inc (KRC), a veterinary consulting service in Atkinson Illinois, reached out to the Shivanand R. Patil Cytogenetics and Molecular Laboratory at University of Iowa Healthcare for assistance in setting up chromosome testing for breeder boars based on the laboratory’s experience in culturing mammalian cells for chromosome analysis. Technologists from KRC traveled to the clinical cytogenetics lab for training. After a dedicated period of work and collaboration, a reproducible culture and harvest protocol was developed to obtain G-band metaphase spreads. Additional assistance for analysis was provided by Dr. Alain Pinton at the National Veterinary College (ENVT) in Toulouse, France. Dr. Pinton’s cytogenetic laboratory provided training in porcine chromosome analysis as well as providing protocols used in that laboratory. Kuster Research and Consulting also worked with SmartType to adapt proprietary karyotype software to assist in analysis of porcine chromosomes. The collaboration established the first of its kind cytogenetic testing in a private USA veterinary laboratory, Results (if a Case Study enter NA) Active collaboration between clinical and veterinary service laboratories resulted in the successful development of testing protocols. In addition, the clinical lab gained experience in analysis of porcine chromosomes which has created opportunities for research using a porcine model. Conclusion Opportunities to share expertise should be sought and and encouraged to provide needed laboratory services in a non traditional setting.

The state of the bats in North America.

The world's rich diversity of bats supports healthy ecosystems and important ecosystem services. Maintaining healthy biological systems requires prompt identification of threats to biodiversity and immediate action to protect species, which for wide-ranging bat species that span geopolitical boundaries warrants international coordination. Anthropogenic forces drive the threats to bats throughout North America and the world. We conducted an international expert elicitation to assess the status of 153 bat species in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. We used expert assessment to determine the conservation status, highest impact threats, and recent population trends for these species. We found that 53% of North American bat species have moderate to very high risk of extinction in the next 15 years. The highest impact threats varied with species and country, and four IUCN threat categories had the greatest overall impacts: Climate Change, Problematic Species (including disease), Agriculture, and Energy Production. Experts estimated that 90% of species assessed had decreasing population trends over the past 15 years, demonstrating the need for conservation action. Although the state of North American bats is concerning, we identify threats that can be addressed through internationally collaborative, proactive, and protective actions to support the recovery and resilience of North American bat species.

Cartographic Review of Teacher Educators’ Professional Learning with an Aesthetic Approach

Experimenting with innovative and creative ways to conduct a literature review aligns with the paradigm shift from qualitative to post-qualitative research, which is concerned with doing and becoming rather than being. The aim of this article is twofold: to unfold the process of a cartographic approach to conducting a literature review; and by exploring the literature to discuss what an aesthetic approach activates in teacher educators’ collaborative professional learning activities. Inspired by Deleuze and Guattari (1988)’s cartographic principle of the rhizome, and post-qualitative inquiry more generally, this review generates knowledge through connections of concepts across 21 international research projects from teacher educators that use an aesthetic approach in their collaborative practices. New components of professional learning are found by mapping-and-tracing entangled concepts. A discussion of encounters within an aesthetic approach to professional learning shows how the processes involved in a cartographic review generates new directions in thinking, such as becoming-professional.

The Mediating Effect of Teachers’ Collective Innovativeness Between School Climate and Job Satisfaction

<p style="text-align:justify">Since psychological satisfaction is influenced by the interaction between individuals and their environment, it is necessary to create a cooperative climate at the organizational level and strengthen collective innovativeness at the individual level to improve teachers' job satisfaction. Therefore, the study investigated whether collective innovativeness can be mediated by the school climate to enhance teacher job satisfaction. This study extensively examined survey data with a sample of 3,976 teachers in Shanghai through Structural Equation Modeling, obtained from Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). The findings revealed that teachers' collective innovativeness served as a significant mediator between school climate and job satisfaction. Furthermore, higher levels of collective innovativeness among teachers amplified the influence of school climate on their job satisfaction. These findings show that schools should strive to foster a collaborative school climate and provide support for teachers in implementing innovative and collaborative teaching activities with the aim of enhancing their job satisfaction. Above all, efforts are needed to support teachers' active and cooperative practice capabilities in building teacher-student relationships.</p>

Exploring the Impact of Digital Technologies on Team Collaborative Design

This paper presents the results of a protocol study exploring the impact of various digital technologies on team collaborative design processes. Previous studies have suggested that compared to traditional methods such as sketching, digital technologies can provide further benefits for collaborative processes. However, there persists a lack of understanding about the impacts of digital technologies on such processes, particularly in relation to emerging significant digital technologies such as immersive Virtual Reality (VR). Therefore, this study aims to fill that gap by exploring team collaboration behaviours of two groups of professionals working in two digital design environments—desktop 3D modelling with Revit and immersive VR using Hyve-3D—as well as their behaviours during traditional sketching sessions for benchmarking purposes. Utilising protocol analysis method, the think-aloud data of participants was recorded, transcribed and coded using an adapted collaborative practice model. Team collaboration activities are broadly categorised as ‘Content’ or ‘Process’: content referring to design task-based activities, while process refers to activities related to the organising of group processes. The results suggest that during the design collaboration process, designers allocated the majority of their efforts towards process-oriented design activities. Differences between design environments only had a minor impact on the amount of effort expended on process-oriented activities and content-oriented activities. Moreover, traditional sketching design environments were shown to be potentially beneficial for problem-solution and associated negotiation activities. Additionally, immersive environments were associated with a reduction in the designers’ cognitive effort that was expended on exploring the design environment.

Interdisciplinary STEM education foundational concepts: Implementation for knowledge creation

Interdisciplinary thinking is essential to understanding and solving real-life problems and requires multiple disciplinary viewpoints. Research into STEM education highlights that it promotes an interdisciplinary learning process integrating science, mathematics, engineering, and mathematics knowledge and skills. However, STEM definitions are varied, and implementation recommendations are scant, resulting in diversity in the development and implementation of the learning process. This study critically analyses the literature to determine the fundamental concepts of STEM education and STEM discipline integration. Our analysis discovers six key components of STEM education, encompassing the integration of discipline, utilization of multiple representations, engagement with realistic and relevant problems, application of the engineering design process, encouragement of active collaboration, and emphasis on student-centered learning approaches. Then, we transform these key components to a practical learning process. The STEM-DTaM (STEM with Design Thinking and Makerspace) learning model consists of seven steps. We then unfold how this proposed learning could facilitate interdisciplinary thinking construction.

The role of modelling during instruction in collaborative creativity

This research examines how modelling, a common instructional technique where a teacher or expert demonstrates a task or skill, impacts students' creative expression in artistic disciplines like music, dance, and visual arts. The study specifically focuses on elementary students engaged in creative collaboration activities, generating movements to music and altering lyrics to a folk song. Through audio and video recordings of student activity, the study observed how students interacted with both the teacher's and their peers' modelled examples. The findings indicate that students often imitated the teacher's examples and adhere closely to the model, creating some confusion for students during idea generation and the rejection of certain ideas.Findings show that in lessons where creative activities are designed to elicit a variety of ideas and make connections, how students interpret modelling can be complex. This highlights the need for clear communication about the intended use of modelling. Despite the small sample size, the study provides initial insights into the challenges and complexities of using modelling in creative educational tasks, emphasising the balance between imitation and creativity.

Toward multimodal learning analytics in simulation-based collaborative learning: A design ethnography of maritime training

AbstractCollaborative learning in high-fidelity simulators is an important part of how master mariner students are preparing for their future career at sea by becoming part of a ship’s bridge team. This study aims to inform the design of multimodal learning analytics to be used for providing automated feedback to master mariner students engaged in collaborative learning activities in high-fidelity navigation simulators. Through a design ethnographic approach, we analyze video records of everyday training practices at a simulator center in Scandinavia, exploring (a) how feedback is delivered to students during collaborative activities in full-mission simulators and (b) which sensors are needed and why they are needed for capturing the multimodal nature of professional performance, communication, and collaboration in simulation-based collaborative learning. Our detailed analysis of two episodes from the data corpus shows how the delivery of feedback during simulations consists of recurring, multidimensional, and multimodal feedback cycles, comprising instructors’ close monitoring of student’s actions to continuously assess the fit between the learning objectives and the ongoing task. Through these embedded assessments, feedback that draws on the rich semiotic resources of the simulated environment, while considering aspects of realism and authenticity, is provided. Considering the multidimensional and multimodal nature of feedback in professional learning contexts, we identify technologies and sensors needed for capturing professional performance in simulated environments.

Leveraging Chatbots to Combat Health Misinformation for Older Adults: Participatory Design Study.

Older adults, a population particularly susceptible to misinformation, may experience attempts at health-related scams or defrauding, and they may unknowingly spread misinformation. Previous research has investigated managing misinformation through media literacy education or supporting users by fact-checking information and cautioning for potential misinformation content, yet studies focusing on older adults are limited. Chatbots have the potential to educate and support older adults in misinformation management. However, many studies focusing on designing technology for older adults use the needs-based approach and consider aging as a deficit, leading to issues in technology adoption. Instead, we adopted the asset-based approach, inviting older adults to be active collaborators in envisioning how intelligent technologies can enhance their misinformation management practices. This study aims to understand how older adults may use chatbots' capabilities for misinformation management. We conducted 5 participatory design workshops with a total of 17 older adult participants to ideate ways in which chatbots can help them manage misinformation. The workshops included 3 stages: developing scenarios reflecting older adults' encounters with misinformation in their lives, understanding existing chatbot platforms, and envisioning how chatbots can help intervene in the scenarios from stage 1. We found that issues with older adults' misinformation management arose more from interpersonal relationships than individuals' ability to detect misinformation in pieces of information. This finding underscored the importance of chatbots to act as mediators that facilitate communication and help resolve conflict. In addition, participants emphasized the importance of autonomy. They desired chatbots to teach them to navigate the information landscape and come to conclusions about misinformation on their own. Finally, we found that older adults' distrust in IT companies and governments' ability to regulate the IT industry affected their trust in chatbots. Thus, chatbot designers should consider using well-trusted sources and practicing transparency to increase older adults' trust in the chatbot-based tools. Overall, our results highlight the need for chatbot-based misinformation tools to go beyond fact checking. This study provides insights for how chatbots can be designed as part of technological systems for misinformation management among older adults. Our study underscores the importance of inviting older adults to be active co-designers of chatbot-based interventions.

The opportunities and challenges of utilising collaborative action research for coaching within Hong Kong China rugby sevens

ABSTRACT Background Despite Rugby sevens being an Olympic sport there is a paucity of research on how to coach it. For an emerging sevens nation like Hong Kong, where participant numbers are limited, the quality of coaching is a key area to focus upon to enhance performance. Methods Over a 12-week period, the aim of this study was to utilise collaborative action research (CAR) with four professional coaches (including myself) within a professional rugby sevens environment to develop coaching practice. The data generated over four action research cycles included focus groups, observations, and reflective diaries. Findings Through CAR the coaches in this study became more conscious of their delivery during practice, namely their individual and collective feedback, being more deliberate in the planning of and reflecting upon their practice, and more aware of how to collaborate effectively. The key challenges encountered by the coaches were finding appropriate moments to intervene in practice to deliver feedback, a lack of role clarity whilst coaching as a group, and perceived power relations between coaches. Difficulties of my dual role of coach and researcher included the balance of having empathy for the stresses of professional coaching whilst striving to provide rich accounts for research. These challenges posed issues surrounding conflict management and power relations amongst the group of coaches. Conclusion Despite the inevitable challenges of working within a social group, the practical implications from this study suggest CAR can provide coaches with a voice and reposition them as co-creators of actionable knowledge. This study presents some of the realistic challenges and opportunities that adopting a CAR approach can provide to coaches who want to collaboratively improve the quality of their practice.

Navigating the Legislative Interventions, Challenges, and Opportunities in Revolutionizing Textile Upcycling/Recycling Processes for a Circular Economy.

Embracing a circular economy in the textile industry represents a crucial step toward sustainability, where fashion and textile sectors contribute significantly to CO2 emissions. However, transitioning from a linear "take-make-waste" model to circularity, poses multifaceted challenges, that highlight the staggering volume of annual textile waste surpassing industry predictions, thus emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive strategies. Despite advancements in recycling technologies, challenges persist in collecting and sorting textile waste, where fragmentation in waste management and recycling processes hinders effective management of post-consumer waste. Addressing these challenges demands elevated efforts in collection, sorting, and pre-processing, alongside regulatory interventions to drive enhanced waste collection and circular business models. Efforts are underway to promote sustainable textile recycling, with initiatives like the EU's Sustainable and Circular Textiles Strategy aiming to reduce reliance on virgin resources. However, achieving a circular textile market in the near future requires collaborative action and innovative solutions. Though challenges in scaling and technological limitations still remain, recent breakthroughs in textile-recycling technologies offer promise, signaling a shift toward scalable and sustainable alternatives to virgin fibers, where bio-based chemical processes, and thermochemical recycling processes present transformative opportunities. Where, bold scaling targets, collaborative efforts, and short-term funding support narrated in this perspective article are imperative to accelerate the transition to a circular textile economy, thus delving into the pivotal role of textile recycling, tracing the evolution of recycling technologies, and addressing critical challenges hindering widespread adoption.

What are the research priorities in dance for dementia? A co-created agenda to support equitable research

ABSTRACT Background There is a gap in the field of dance for dementia regarding how to engage in and improve equitable, moral, and rights-based ways of working with those with lived experience to co-design research priorities. We set out to create a collaborative research agenda for this field. Methods A series of collaborative activities were conducted, including an in-person workshop (n = 59 people), online workshop (n = 23 people), digital communications, podcasts, and co-writing, including with people living with dementia (PLWD), health and social care professionals, artists, arts organisational representatives, and academic researchers. Results Three key themes were constructed: 1) Improving access to dance participation; 2) Prioritising co-produced approaches; and 3) Enabling innovation in measurement and methods. Conclusion This is the first co-produced agenda for the field of dance for dementia. Underpinned by diverse perspectives and lived experience, it outlines themes and associated research questions that can be used in future research.

Penerapan Metode Pembelajaran Kooperatif Tipe Think-Pair-Share dalam Pengajaran Pendidikan Agama Islam di SMP YPMA Medan

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) cooperative learning method in the teaching of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SMP YPMA Medan. The problem addressed is the low level of active student participation in PAI learning. To address this issue, the TPS method was implemented as a strategy to increase student engagement. This research used a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the application of the TPS method significantly increased student activity in discussions and collaboration, as well as deepened their understanding of the learning material. Students were more motivated and actively participated in the learning process, showing improvement in academic achievement. These findings indicate that the TPS method is effective in teaching PAI, particularly in facilitating interactive and collaborative learning.
