Detection and clinical significance of C reactivn protein and P-selectin in patients with ulcerative colitis

Objective To study the detection and clinical signitlcanee of C reactivn protein(ClIP)and P-seleetin(P-sel)in patients with ulcerative colitis(UC).Methods The levels of peripheral blood ClIP and P-sel in patients with UC(n=53)and normal control group(n=35)were detected and the effects on disease severity were analyzed subsequently.Results The levels of blood CRP and P-sel in active phase group were significantly higher than those in catabasis group and normal controls group(P＜0.05);severe stage and medium stage were signiticandy higher than those in mild stage(P＜0.05,P＜0.01),severe stage was significantly higher than those in medium stage(P＜0.05);the blood level of CRP was positively related to P-sel in active phase group(r=0.638,P＜0.01).Conclusion CRP and P-sel were correlated with invasion and severity of UC. Impact of early admission in labor on method of delivery

Objective The effect of the timing of admission in labor unit on the method of delivery was evaluated in a cohort study. Method Four hundred and sixty six low-risk nulliparous women who were admitted in the labor unit in latent phase (group 1) were compared with 329 parturient women who were admitted in the active phase (group 2) to determine rate of and reasons for cesarean section, cervical dilation at the time of cesarean, and the rate of labor augmentation. Result The number of cesarean deliveries in group 1 was greater than that in the group 2 (301 vs 80, p < 0.0001 ). The main reason for cesarean section in group 1 was dystocia, and in 2, fetal distress. The rate of cesarean section in the women who were augmented was greater in group 1 than in group 2 (54% vs 23%, p < 0.0001). Conclusion Later admission in labor increases the rate of spontaneous vaginal delivery in low risk nulliparous women.

Association between recurrent aphthous stomatitis and salivary thiocyanate levels

The aim of this work was to investigate the association between recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and salivary thiocyanate levels. The sample comprised men and women of age ranging from 15 to 55 years, who were allocated to four groups: 28 patients in RAS active phase (group 1); 28 patients in RAS remission phase (group 2); 29 smokers (group 3); 26 non-smokers without RAS (group 4). Samples of whole saliva mechanically stimulated were collected, and thiocyanate levels were measured. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and paired t-test. Mean salivary thiocyanate values were 0.55 mM, 0.64 mM, 2.36 mM and 0.96 mM in groups 1 (active RAS), 2 (remission RAS), 3 (smokers) and 4 (control), respectively. There was no significant difference in thiocyanate levels when groups 1 and 2 were compared with group 4. Group 3 showed a significantly higher thiocyanate concentration when compared with groups 1, 2 and 4 (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in thiocyanate levels between groups 1 and 2 (P > 0.05). It is therefore suggested that there is no association between RAS and salivary thiocyanate levels.

Crescentic glomerulonephritis: a clinicopathologic analysis of 17 cases with emphasis on glomerular and interstitial neutrophil infiltration.

In order to determine the extent to which specific forms of glomerulonephritis (GN) contribute to the pool of crescentic GN, renal tissues from 17 crescentic GN patients were examined with special attention to glomerular and interstitial neutrophil infiltration. Renal tissues from five normal kidneys served as normal controls. Renal biopsy tissues from five patients with postinfectious GN in which crescent formation was not observed were also examined as disease controls. The patients were put into both three groups according to immunofluorescence findings and two groups according to the active or inactive phase of the crescents: group 1 with anti-glomerular basement membrane crescentic GN, one case; group 2 with immune complex crescentic GN, ten cases; and group 3 with pauci-immune crescentic GN, six cases. Four of the nine individuals tested were positive for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (44.4%). Glomerular and interstitial neutrophil infiltrations were prominent in both the active and inactive phase groups, compared to normal controls (p<.05). Glomerular neutrophil infiltration was significantly prominent in the active phase group, compared to the inactive phase group (p<.001). In both the active and inactive phase groups, interstitial neutrophil infiltration was prominent, compared to disease control groups (p<.05). These results support the concept of the participation of periglomerular leukocytes in the renal tissue damage of crescentic GN, although the role of neutrophils was not examined.
