Location of Geomagnetic Disturbances in Relation to the Field Aligned Current Boundary

AbstractGeomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) are rapid fluctuations in the strength and direction of the magnetic field near the surface of the Earth which can cause electric currents to be induced in the ground. The geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) can cause damage to pipelines and power grids. A detection algorithm has been developed to identify rapid changes in 10 s averaged magnetometer data. This higher resolution data is important in capturing the most rapid changes associated with extreme GIC events. The algorithm has been used on an array of ground‐based magnetometers from SuperMAG data from 2010 to 2022, creating a new list of global GMDs. Data from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) is used to place the observed GMDs in the context of the global pattern of magnetosphere‐ionosphere field‐aligned currents (FACs). A dawn sector population of GMDs is found to lie near the boundary between the region 1 and region 2 FACs, while a pre‐midnight sector population is found to occur poleward of the FAC boundary on region 1 upward FACs. It is also shown that the latitude of the GMDs expands with the FAC boundary and their occurrence peaks around 77° magnetic latitude.

Relative Contributions of Field‐Aligned Currents and Particle Precipitation to Inter‐Hemispheric Asymmetry at High Latitudes During the 2015 St. Patrick's Day Storm

AbstractHigh latitude upper atmospheric inter‐hemispheric asymmetry (IHA) tends to be enhanced during geomagnetic storms, which may be due to the complex spatiotemporal changes and magnitude modifications in field aligned currents (FACs) and particle precipitation (PP). However, the relative contribution of FACs and PP to IHA in high‐latitude forcing and energy is not well understood. The IHA during the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day storm has been investigated using the global ionosphere thermosphere model (GITM), driven by FACs from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) and PP from the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE). A comprehensive study of the (a) relative contributions of FACs and PP to electric potential and Joule heating and (b) sensitivity of electric potential and Joule heating to the changes in magnitude and distribution of FACs and PP is presented. The results indicate that FACs lead to larger potential and Joule heating changes compared with PP. The spatial variations of potential and Joule heating are also affected by variation in FACs. As for asymmetric magnitude and distribution, it is found that electric potential and Joule heating are more sensitive to changes in the distribution of FACs and PP than the magnitude of FACs and PP. A new spatial asymmetry index (SAI) is introduced, which reveals spatial asymmetric details that are often overlooked by previous studies. This sensitivity study reveals the relative contributions in high‐latitude forcing and emphasizes the importance of obtaining accurate FACs and PP in both hemispheres.

Statistical Analysis of Bifurcating Region 2 Field-Aligned Currents Using AMPERE

We present a statistical analysis of the occurrence of bifurcations of the Region 2 (R2) Field-Aligned Current (FAC) region, observed by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). Previously, these have been shown to occur as the polar cap contracts after substorm onset, the beginning of the growth phase. During this phase both the Region 1 (R1) and R2 currents move equatorwards as the polar cap expands. Following onset, the R1 FAC region contracts polewards but the R2 FAC continues to expand equatorwards before eventually fading. At the same time, a new R2 FAC develops equatorwards of the R1 FAC. We have proposed that the bifurcated FACs formed during substorms are associated with plasma injections from the magnetotail into the inner magnetosphere, and that they might be the FAC signature associated with Sub-Auroral Polarization Streams (SAPS). We investigate the seasonal dependence of the occurrence of bifurcations from 2010 to 2016, determining whether they occur predominantly at dawn or dusk. Region 2 Bifurcations (R2Bs) are observed most frequently in the summer hemisphere and at dusk, and we discuss the possible influence of ionospheric conductance. We also discuss a newly discovered UT dependence of the R2B occurrences between 2011 and 2014. This dependence is characterized by broad peaks in occurrence near 09 and 21 UT in both hemispheres. Reasons for such a preference in occurrence are explored.

Interhemispheric Asymmetries in Ionospheric Electron Density Responses During Geomagnetic Storms: A Study Using Space‐Based and Ground‐Based GNSS and AMPERE Observations

AbstractWe utilize Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements and electron density (Ne) retrieval profiles from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers onboard multiple Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to characterize large‐scale ionosphere‐thermosphere system responses during geomagnetic storms. We also analyze TEC measurements from GNSS receivers in a worldwide ground‐based network. Measurements from four storms during June and July 2012 (boreal summer months), December 2015 (austral summer month), and March 2015 (equinoctial month) are analyzed to study global ionospheric responses and the interhemispheric asymmetry of these responses. We find that the space‐based and ground‐based TECs and their responses are consistent in all four geomagnetic storms. The global 3D view from GNSS‐Radio Occultation (RO) Ne observations captures enhancements and the uplifting of Ne structures at high latitudes during the initial and main phases. Subsequently, Ne depletion occurs at high latitudes and starts progressing into midlatitude and low latitude as the storm reaches its recovery phase. A clear time lag is evident in the storm‐induced Ne perturbations at high latitudes between the summer and winter hemispheres. The interhemispheric asymmetry in TEC and Ne appears to be consistent with the magnitudes of the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) high latitude integrated field‐aligned currents (FACs), which are 3–4 MA higher in the summer hemisphere than in the winter hemisphere during these storms. The ionospheric TEC and Ne responses combined with the AMPERE‐observed FACs indicate that summer preconditioning in the ionosphere‐thermosphere system plays a key role in the interhemispheric asymmetric storm responses.

High‐Latitude Electrodynamics Specified in SAMI3 Using AMPERE Field‐Aligned Currents

AbstractA new technique has been developed to determine the high‐latitude electric potential from observed field‐aligned currents (FACs) and modeled ionospheric conductances. FACs are observed by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE), while the conductances are modeled by Sami3 is Also a Model of the Ionosphere (SAMI3). This is a development of the Magnetosphere‐Ionosphere Coupling approach first demonstrated by Merkin and Lyon (2010), https://doi.org/10.1029/2010ja015461. An advantage of using SAMI3 is that the model can be used to predict total electron content (TEC), based on the AMPERE‐derived potential solutions. 23 May 2014 is chosen as a case study to assess the new technique for a moderately disturbed case (min Dst: −36 nT, max AE: 909 nT) with good GPS data coverage. The new AMPERE/SAMI3 solutions are compared against independent GPS‐based TEC observations from the Multi‐Instrument Data Analysis Software (MIDAS) by Mitchell and Spencer (2003), and against Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) ion drift data. The comparison shows excellent agreement between the location of the tongue of ionization in the MIDAS GPS data and the AMPERE/SAMI3 potential pattern, and good overall agreement with DMSP drifts. SAMI3 predictions of high‐latitude TEC are much improved when using the AMPERE‐derived potential as compared to Weimer's (2005), https://doi.org/10.1029/2005ja011270 model. The two potential models have substantial differences, with Weimer producing an average 77 kV cross‐cap potential versus 60 kV for the AMPERE‐derived potential. The results indicate that the 66‐satellite Iridium constellation provides sufficient resolution of FACs to estimate large‐scale ionospheric convection as it impacts TEC.

Quantifying the Lobe Reconnection Rate During Dominant IMF By Periods and Different Dipole Tilt Orientations

AbstractLobe reconnection is usually thought to play an important role in geospace dynamics only when the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) is mainly northward. This is because the most common and unambiguous signature of lobe reconnection is the strong sunward convection in the polar cap ionosphere observed during these conditions. During more typical conditions, when the IMF is mainly oriented in a dawn‐dusk direction, plasma flows initiated by dayside and lobe reconnection both map to high‐latitude ionospheric locations in close proximity to each other on the dayside. This makes the distinction of the source of the observed dayside polar cap convection ambiguous, as the flow magnitude and direction are similar from the two topologically different source regions. We here overcome this challenge by normalizing the ionospheric convection observed by the Super Dual Aurora Radar Network (SuperDARN) to the polar cap boundary, inferred from simultaneous observations from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). This new method enable us to separate and quantify the relative contribution of both lobe reconnection and dayside/nightside (Dungey cycle) reconnection during periods of dominating IMF By. Our main findings are twofold. First, the lobe reconnection rate can typically account for 20% of the Dungey cycle flux transport during local summer when IMF By is dominating and IMF Bz ≥ 0. Second, the dayside convection relative to the open/closed boundary is vastly different in local summer versus local winter, as defined by the dipole tilt angle.

Magnetosphere‐Ionosphere Coupling via Prescribed Field‐Aligned Current Simulated by the TIEGCM

AbstractThe magnetosphere‐ionosphere (MI) coupling is crucial in modeling the thermosphere‐ionosphere (TI) response to geomagnetic activity. In general circulation models (GCMs) the MI coupling is typically realized by specifying the ion convection and auroral particle precipitation patterns from for example, empirical or assimilative models. Assimilative models, such as the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics, have the advantage that the ion convection and auroral particle precipitation patterns are mutually consistent and based on available observations. However, assimilating a large set of diverse data requires expert knowledge and is time consuming. Empirical models, on the other hand, are convenient to use, but do not capture all the observed spatial and temporal variations. With the availability of Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) data, there is an opportunity for employing field‐aligned currents (FAC) in GCMs to represent the MI coupling. In this study, we will introduce a new method which enables us to use observed FAC in GCMs and solve for the interhemispherically asymmetric electric potential distribution. We compare Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) simulations of a geomagnetic storm period using the new approach and two other often‐used methods for specifying MI coupling based on empirical and assimilative high latitude electric potentials. The comparison shows general similarities of the TI storm time response and improved temporal variability of the new method compared to using empirical models, but results also illustrate substantial differences due to our uncertain knowledge about the MI coupling process.

Colocated Observations of the E and F Region Thermosphere During a Substorm

AbstractTwo‐dimensional thermospheric wind fields, at both E and F region altitudes within a common vertical volume, were made using a Scanning Doppler Imager (SDI) at Poker Flat, Alaska, during a substorm event. Coinciding with these observations were F region plasma velocity measurements from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) and estimations of the total downward and upward field‐aligned current density from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). This combination of instruments gives an excellent opportunity to examine the spatial characteristics of high‐latitude ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling and how a process which is triggered in the magnetosphere (the substorm) affects that coupling at different altitudes. We find that during the substorm growth phase, the F region thermospheric winds respond readily to an expanding ionospheric plasma convection pattern, while the E region winds appear to take a much longer period of time. The differing response timescales of the E and F region winds are likely due to differences in neutral density at those altitudes, resulting in E region neutrals being much more “sluggish” with regard to ion drag. We also observe increases in the F region neutral temperature, associated with neutral winds accelerating during both substorm growth and recovery phases.

Dayside Polar Cap Density Enhancements Formed During Substorms

AbstractThe formation of polar cap density enhancements, such as tongues‐of‐ionization (TOIs), are often attributed to enhanced dayside reconnection and convection due to solar wind changes. However, ionospheric poleward moving density enhancements can also form in the absence of changes in the solar wind. This study examines how TOI and patch events that are not triggered by solar wind changes relate to magnetospheric processes, specifically substorms. Based on total electron content and Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) observations, we find substorms that occur at the same time as TOIs are associated with sudden enhancements in dayside poleward flows during the substorm expansion phase. Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) observations also show enhanced field‐aligned currents (FACs) that extend into the dayside ionosphere during this period. We suggest that the global enhancement of FACs and convection during these substorms are the drivers of these TOIs by enhancing dayside convection and transporting high‐density lower‐latitude plasma into the polar cap. However, we also find that not all substorms are coincident with polar cap density enhancements. A superposed epoch study showed that the AL index for TOIs during substorms is not particularly stronger than substorms without TOIs, but epoch studies of AMPERE observations do show events with TOIs to have a higher total FAC on both the dayside and nightside. Our results show the importance of TOI formation during substorms when solar wind drivers are absent, and the importance of considering substorms in the global current system. This work also shows the need to incorporate substorms into models of high‐latitude global convection and currents.

Dual‐Lobe Reconnection and Horse‐Collar Auroras

AbstractWe propose a mechanism for the formation of the horse‐collar auroral configuration during periods of strongly northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), invoking the action of dual‐lobe reconnection (DLR). Auroral observations are provided by the Imager for Magnetopause‐to‐Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite and spacecraft of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). We also use ionospheric flow measurements from DMSP and polar maps of field‐aligned currents (FACs) derived from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). Sunward convection is observed within the dark polar cap, with antisunward flows within the horse‐collar auroral region, together with the NBZ FAC distribution expected to be associated with DLR. We suggest that newly closed flux is transported antisunward and to dawn and dusk within the reverse lobe cell convection pattern associated with DLR, causing the polar cap to acquire a teardrop shape and weak auroras to form at high latitudes. Horse‐collar auroras are a common feature of the quiet magnetosphere, and this model provides a first understanding of their formation, resolving several outstanding questions regarding the nature of DLR and the magnetospheric structure and dynamics during northward IMF. The model can also provide insights into the trapping of solar wind plasma by the magnetosphere and the formation of a low‐latitude boundary layer and cold, dense plasma sheet. We speculate that prolonged DLR could lead to a fully closed magnetosphere, with the formation of horse‐collar auroras being an intermediate step.

A Deep Learning‐Based Approach for Modeling the Dynamics of AMPERE Birkeland Currents

AbstractThe existence of Birkeland magnetic field‐aligned current (FAC) system was proposed more than a century ago, and it has been of immense interest for investigating the nature of solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere coupling ever since. In this paper, we present the first application of deep learning architecture for modeling the Birkeland currents using data from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). The model uses a 1‐hr time history of several different parameters such as interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), solar wind, and geomagnetic and solar indices as inputs to determine the global distribution of Birkeland currents in the Northern Hemisphere. We present a comparison between our model and bin‐averaged statistical patterns under steady IMF conditions and also when the IMF is variable. Our deep learning model shows good agreement with the bin‐averaged patterns, capturing several prominent large‐scale features such as the Regions 1 and 2 FACs, the NBZ current system, and the cusp currents along with their seasonal variations. However, when IMF and solar wind conditions are not stable, our model provides a more accurate view of the time‐dependent evolution of Birkeland currents. The reconfiguration of the FACs following an abrupt change in IMF orientation can be traced in its details. The magnitude of FACs is found to evolve with e‐folding times that vary with season and MLT. When IMF Bz turns southward after a prolonged northward orientation, NBZ currents decay exponentially with an e‐folding time of ∼25 min, whereas Region 1 currents grow with an e‐folding time of 6–20 min depending on the MLT.

Statistical Relations Between Auroral Electrical Conductances and Field‐Aligned Currents at High Latitudes

AbstractField‐aligned currents from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) were combined with simultaneous and coincident observations of ionospheric conductivities made by the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR) in Alaska for 20 geomagnetically active days. The height‐integrated conductivities (conductances) were determined from the electron densities measured by the radar between 80 and 200 km altitude. Binning and averaging the data by field‐aligned current density and magnetic local time, we find that the currents correlate with conductances in both upward and downward current regions over some magnetic local times. The strongest correlation is seen in the late evening and morning sectors, with the Hall conductances two to three times larger than the Pedersen conductances for the same values of the field‐aligned current. The observed correlations reflect the mean energy of auroral precipitation, the contributions from electrons and protons to producing enhanced conductances, and the availability of charge carriers on auroral field lines. We apply linear fitting and smoothing to the correlations to construct an empirical model for specifying auroral conductances globally from AMPERE field‐aligned current maps. The energy fluxes from precipitating particles derived from the model conductances compare well with those derived using AMPERE data combined with satellite‐based measurements of far ultraviolet emissions, suggesting the results obtained at Poker Flat may be applicable to all high latitude locations. The ability to estimate conductances from AMPERE field‐aligned current maps provides the means to develop a global conductance model for the auroral ionosphere.

An Improved Estimation of SuperDARN Heppner‐Maynard Boundaries Using AMPERE Data

AbstractSuper Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) ionospheric convection maps are a powerful tool for the study of solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere interactions. SuperDARN data have high temporal (approximately minutes) and spatial (∼45 km) resolution, meaning that the convection can be mapped on fine time scales that show more detail than the large‐scale changes in the pattern. The Heppner‐Maynard boundary (HMB) defines the low‐latitude limit of the convection region, and its identification is an essential component of the standard SuperDARN convection mapping technique. However, the estimation of the latitude of this boundary is dependent on ionospheric scatter availability. Consequentially it is susceptible to nonphysical variations as areas of scatter in different latitude and local time regions appear and disappear, often due to changing propagation conditions. In this paper, the HMB is compared to an independent field‐aligned current data set from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). A linear trend is found between the HMB and the boundary between the AMPERE Region 1 and Region 2 field‐aligned currents in the Northern Hemisphere, at both solar minimum and solar maximum. The use of this trend and the AMPERE current data set to predict the latitude position of the HMB is found to improve the interpretation of the SuperDARN measurements in convection mapping.

Event Studies of High‐Latitude FACs With Inverse and Assimilative Analysis of AMPERE Magnetometer Data

AbstractWe present examples of high‐latitude field‐aligned current (FAC) and toroidal magnetic potential patterns in both hemispheres reconstructed at a 2‐min cadence using an updated optimal interpolation (OI) method that ingests magnetic perturbation data provided by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) program. A solstice and an equinoctial event are studied to demonstrate the reconstructed patterns and to provide scientific insights into FAC response to different solar wind drivers. For the 14 June 2011 high‐speed stream event with mostly northward Bz driving, we found persistently stronger FACs in the Northern Hemisphere. Extreme interhemispheric asymmetry is associated with the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) direction and large dipole tilt, consistent with earlier studies. FAC asymmetries seen during an isolated substorm can be attributed to dipole tilt. During relatively low geomagnetic activity, the FAC response to IMF Bx changes is identified. For the 17–18 March 2013 period, we provide global snapshots of rapid FAC changes related to an interplanetary shock passage. We further present comparisons between instantaneous and mean behaviors of FAC for the solar wind sheath passage and interplanetary coronal mass ejection southward Bz interval and northward Bz intervals. We show that (1) sheath passage results in strong FAC and high variation in the dayside polar cap region and pre‐midnight region, different from the typical R1/R2 currents during prolonged southward Bz; (2) four‐cell reverse patterns appear during northward Bz but are not stable; and (3) persistent dawn‐dusk asymmetry is seen throughout the storm, especially during an extreme substorm, likely associated with a dawnside current wedge.

Timescales of Birkeland Currents Driven by the IMF

AbstractWe obtain current densities from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE), alongside By and Bz from the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) for March 2010. For each AMPERE spatial coordinate, we cross‐correlate current density with By and Bz, finding the maximum correlation for lags up to 360 min. The patterns of maximum correlation contain large‐scale structures consistent with the literature. For the correlation with By, the lags on the dayside are 10 min at high latitudes but up to 240 min at lower latitudes. Lags on the nightside are 90–150 min. For Bz, the shortest lags on the dayside are 10–20 min; on the equatorward edge of the current oval, 60–90 min; and on the nightside, predominantly 90–150 min. This novel approach enables us to see statistically the timescales on which information is electrodynamically communicated to the ionosphere after magnetic field lines reconnect on the dayside and nightside.

Low‐Energy (<keV) O+ Ion Outflow Directly Into the Inner Magnetosphere: Van Allen Probes Observations

AbstractThe heavy ion component of the low‐energy (eV to hundreds of eV) ion population in the inner magnetosphere, also known as the O+ torus, is a crucial population for various aspects of magnetospheric dynamics. Yet even though its existence has been known since the 1980s, its formation remains an open question. We present a comprehensive study of a low‐energy (<keV), bidirectional O+ outflow event, which occurred deep into the inner magnetosphere (inside L = 4), and was observed by the Helium, Oxygen, Proton and Electron (HOPE) instrument aboard the Van Allen Probe B. The observed spectrogram exhibited multiple bands of field‐aligned intensity enhancements with energy dispersion. A 2‐D guiding‐center test‐particle tracing simulation demonstrates that the observed spectral features can be attributed to O+ ions exiting both hemispheres of the nightside ionosphere over L ~ 3–4 latitudinal and magnetic local time (MLT) ~ 21 to 23 hr longitudinal extent, directly entering the inner magnetosphere, and subsequently bouncing from one hemisphere to the other. The outflow is associated with earthward field‐aligned Poynting flux enhancement and field‐aligned electron beams, as observed at the Van Allen Probes location, as well as with strong upward field‐aligned current, as revealed by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) at the ionospheric footpoint of the spacecraft. O+ partial density in the region outside plasmapause was significantly enhanced by the outflow population, exceeding the H+ density and indicating the possible formation of an O+ torus.

Estimating the Rate of Cessation of Magnetospheric Activity in AMPERE Field‐Aligned Currents

AbstractThe decay of magnetospheric activity when driving is turned off (to a minimum) was measured in total field‐aligned current estimates from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) project. Events of distinct northward turnings of the interplanetary magnetic field were identified, with prolonged periods of stable southward driving conditions followed by northward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. All but 4 of 43 identified events exhibit a well‐defined exponential decay in the total hemispheric field‐aligned current following the northward turning. A superposed epoch analysis yields a generic decay constant of 0.9, corresponding to an e‐folding time of 1.1 hr. A statistical analysis of the ensemble of events also reveals a seasonal variation in the decay parameter with faster decay observed in the winter than in the summer hemisphere. This result can be understood in terms of stronger/weaker line tying of the ionospheric foot points of magnetospheric field lines for higher/lower conductivity.

Magnetosphere‐Ionosphere Connection of Storm‐Time Region‐2 Field‐Aligned Current and Ring Current: Arase and AMPERE Observations

AbstractStorm‐time region‐2 field‐aligned currents (R2 FACs) are believed to be connected between the ring current region and the ionosphere, but this connection has not been clarified by simultaneous in situ observations. We confirmed the connection of upward R2 FACs during 16 July and 18 June 2017 storm events using coordinated magnetic observations by the Arase satellite in medium‐Earth orbit and the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). The upward FACs were determined by drastic changes in the azimuthal magnetic field at Arase in the off‐equatorial (3‐ to 4‐RE radial distance and 1–2 RE above the magnetic equator) postmidnight inner magnetosphere. The magnetic latitude of the FAC observed by Arase projected onto the ionosphere was consistent with that of the ionospheric FAC observed by the AMPERE. Using the conservation of the ratio between the current density and the total magnetic field along the field line, we showed that the current between Arase and AMPERE was almost conserved, meaning that a large portion of the R2 FAC was generated in the low‐latitude inner magnetosphere. We also calculated the plasma pressures of H+ and O+ ions and pressure‐driven currents to examine their relationship for the first event. The O+ pressure contributed significantly to the inner part of the total azimuthal current. The peaks of combined pressure of H+ and O+, and pressure‐driven currents were located inside and outside the FAC, respectively. A simple model calculation indicated that this spatial relationship is controlled by the day‐night asymmetry of magnetic field.

Temporal and Spatial Development of Global Birkeland Currents

AbstractThe development of large‐scale Birkeland currents is examined using the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE), which measures global Birkeland currents continuously on 10‐min time scales. The integrated current was used to identify onsets of at least 1 MA preceded by periods of quiescence lasting at least 3 hr. The Region 1 currents do not fully form without Region 2. Rather, they develop together, first on the dayside, then on the nightside, and lastly, they fill in and intensify at all local times to form the nominal statistical pattern. The onsets are closely correlated with enhancements of magnetospheric forcing as indicated by the solar wind electric field and the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field. Nightside onsets correspond to intensifications of the auroral electrojet as reflected in the AE index; they are delayed by ~40 min relative to the increase of the dayside current and are 2.8 times more rapid than the dayside current increase. After nightside onset, Birkeland currents expand toward dawn and dusk and merge with the dayside currents while also intensifying at all local times. The dayside current pattern depends on the sign of the interplanetary magnetic field BY. The nightside current distributions are the same for positive and negative BY and display a Harang discontinuity independent of the sign of BY. The predominant development and intensification of Birkeland currents occur after nightside onset at all local times with roughly 75% of the total current, both Regions 1 and 2, appearing after nightside onset.

Relation of Field‐Aligned Currents Measured by the Network of Iridium® Spacecraft to Solar Wind and Substorms

AbstractThe strength of field‐aligned currents coupling the magnetosphere to the ionosphere was obtained by the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE) using the network of Iridium® spacecraft. The distribution of current was integrated giving total current in and out of the ionosphere on the dayside and nightside of the Earth in both hemispheres. The onset of auroral zone negative bays and midlatitude positive bays corresponds to an increase in nightside upward current. The total outward current tends toward saturation with increasing solar wind driver strength. The optimum solar wind coupling function for AL index predicts ~73% of the variance in nightside upward current. The dayside and nightside predictors of upward current rise to a peak at 30–45 min and decay slowly over 2.5 hr. Nightside response is delayed relative to dayside.
