Promoting the Maneuverability and Fault-Tolerant Control Capabilities of Dual-System/Hybrid VTOL UAVs

This paper presents an active fault-tolerant flight control system (FCS) design for the dual-system/hybrid VTOL UAV configuration that maximally exploits its inherent over-actuation abilities to provide higher levels of fault-tolerance and reliability compared to that of the other VTOL UAVs configurations up to this point. The significance of this study is to convert the main drawback of having the vertical rotors as dead weights during the cruise to a key advantage where all the UAV's controls are kept active during all the flight phases raising the UAV's fault-tolerance and maneuverability abilities. The FCS proposed elaborates on a new architecture for the hierarchical automatic control loops using the dynamic inversion control to design the trajectory tracking virtual commands and employing optimal dynamic control allocation to optimally resolve the controls redundancy. Regarding fault-tolerance, the presented FCS handles simultaneous failures and jamming of all the control surfaces during flight where the control commands to the healthy controls (vertical rotors) were automatically adapted such that the trimming and trajectory tracking were successfully maintained till the mission end. Additionally, this paper addresses for the first time the employment of the controls redundancy to enhance the VTOL UAV's maneuverability in fault-free cases, where we present a study of reducing the minimum turn radius of the UAV when the vertical rotors are employed with the control surfaces during the maneuver. A reduction of 38% in the coordinated steady-level minimum turn radius turn at 35 m/sec flight speed was achieved.

Wind Turbine Active Fault Tolerant Control Based on Backstepping Active Disturbance Rejection Control and a Neurofuzzy Detector

Wind energy conversion systems have become an important part of renewable energy history due to their accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Offshore wind farms are seen as the future of wind energy, but they can be very expensive to maintain if faults occur. To achieve a reliable and consistent performance, modern wind turbines require advanced fault detection and diagnosis methods. The current research introduces a proposed active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) system that uses backstepping active disturbance rejection theory (BADRC) and an adaptive neurofuzzy system (ANFIS) detector in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) to compensate for system disturbances and maintain performance even when a generator actuator fault occurs. The simulation outcomes demonstrate that the suggested method successfully addresses the actuator generator torque failure problem by isolating the faulty actuator, providing a reliable and robust solution to prevent further damage. The neurofuzzy detector demonstrates outstanding performance in detecting false data in torque, achieving a precision of 90.20% for real data and 100% for false data. With a recall of 100%, no false negatives were observed. The overall accuracy of 95.10% highlights the detector’s ability to reliably classify data as true or false. These findings underscore the robustness of the detector in detecting false data, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the application presented. Overall, the study concludes that BADRC and ANFIS detection and isolation can improve the reliability of offshore wind farms and address the issue of actuator generator torque failure.

Avoiding contingent incidents by quadrotors due to one or two propellers failure.

With the increasing impact of drones in our daily lives, safety issues have become a primary concern. In this study, a novel supervisor-based active fault-tolerant (FT) control system is presented for a rotary-wing quadrotor to maintain its pose in 3D space upon losing one or two propellers. Our approach allows the quadrotor to make controlled movements about a primary axis attached to the body-fixed frame. A multi-loop cascaded control architecture is designed to ensure robustness, stability, reference tracking, and safe landing. The altitude control is performed using a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, whereas linear-quadratic-integral (LQI) and model-predictive-control (MPC) have been investigated for reduced attitude control and their performance is compared based on absolute and mean-squared error. The simulation results affirm that the quadrotor remains in a stable region, successfully performs the reference tracking, and ensures a safe landing while counteracting the effects of propeller(s) failures.

Design of hybrid fault-tolerant control system for air-fuel ratio control of internal combustion engines using artificial neural network and sliding mode control against sensor faults

This paper proposes a novel hybrid fault-tolerant control system (HFTCS) with dedicated non-linear controllers: artificial neural network (ANN) and sliding mode control (SMC) for active and passive parts, respectively. The proposed system can provide both desirable properties of stability to unexpected fast disturbances and post-fault optimal performance. In the active fault tolerant control system (AFTCS) part, the fault detection and isolation (FDI) unit is designed through the use of ANN for the estimation of faulty sensor values in the observer model. In the passive fault-tolerant system (PFTCS) part, the air-fuel ratio (AFR) controller is designed using a robust SMC that allows systems to manage faults in predefined limits without estimation. In the proposed system, SMC will form the passive part to react instantly to faults while ANN will optimize post-fault performance with active compensation. Moreover, Lyapunov stability analysis was also performed to make sure that the system remains stable in both normal and faulty conditions. The simulation results in the Matlab/Simulink environment show that the designed controller is robust to faults in normal and noisy measurements of the sensors. A comparison with the existing works also demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed hybrid algorithm.

Multirotor Motor Failure Detection with Piezo Sensor

Failure detection of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) motors and propulsion systems is the most important step in the implementation of active fault-tolerant control systems. This will increase the reliability of unmanned systems and increase the level of safety, especially in civil and commercial applications. The following paper presents a method of motor failure detection in the multirotor UAV using piezo bars. The results of a real flight, in which the failure of the propulsion system caused the crash of a hybrid VTOL UAV, were presented and analyzed. The conclusions drawn from this flight led to the development of a lightweight, simple and reliable sensor that can detect a failure of the UAV propulsion system. The article presents the outcomes of laboratory tests concerning measurements made with a piezo sensor. An extensive analysis of the obtained results of vibrations recorded on a flying platform arm with a propulsion system is presented, and a methodology for using this type of data to detect failures is proposed. The article presents the possibility of using a piezoelectric sensor to record vibrations on the basis of which it is possible to detect a failure of the UAV propulsion system.

Design of Active Fault-Tolerant Control System for Air-Fuel Ratio control of Internal Combustion engine using nonlinear regression-based observer model.

Internal Combustion (IC) engines are prevalent in the process sector, and maintaining sufficient Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) regulation in their fuel system is crucial for enhanced engine performance, fuel economy, and environmental safety. Faults in the AFR system's sensors cause the engine to shut down, hence, fault tolerance is essential. In order to avoid engine shutdown, this paper offers a novel Active Fault-Tolerant Control System (AFTCS) for air-fuel ratio control of an Internal Combustion (IC) engine in a process plant. In the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit, the proposed AFTCS uses a nonlinear regression-based observer model for analytical redundancy. The suggested system was simulated in the MATLAB / Simulink environment. The proposed system was tested at two different speeds (300 r/min and 600 r/min) and the results show that the system's response is within the acceptable bound without compromising the stability. The findings also demonstrate the higher fault tolerance capability for sensor defects of the AFR control system, particularly for the MAP sensor (at 300 r/min) in terms of reduced oscillatory response in comparison to the current literature. Compared to the linear regression-based and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based model, the nonlinear regression-based model results in a more accurate estimation of the faulty sensors. The proposed model is also efficient in terms of computation power and response time.

Hybrid Fault-Tolerant Control for Air-Fuel Ratio Control System of Internal Combustion Engine Using Fuzzy Logic and Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control Techniques

Safety and critical applications employ fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS) to increase reliability and availability in the event of a failure of critical components. Process facilities may employ these technologies to cut down on production losses caused by equipment failures that occur on an irregular or unscheduled basis. Air–fuel ratio (AFR) adjustment in the fuel system of internal combustion engines (ICE) is crucial for enhancing engine efficiency, saving fuel energy, and safeguarding the environment. This paper proposes a novel hybrid fault-tolerant control system (HFTCS) for controlling the AFR in ICEs that combines the features of both an active fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS) and a passive fault-tolerant control system (PFTCS). The fault detection and isolation (FDI) unit is designed using fuzzy logic (FL) as part of an AFTCS to give estimated sensor values to the engine controller when the sensor becomes faulty. Super-twisting sliding mode control (ST-SMC) is implemented as part of a PFTCS to maintain AFR by adjusting the throttle actuator in the fuel supply line under faulty conditions. Lyapunov stability analysis is also performed to make sure that the system remains stable in both normal and faulty conditions. According to the results in the Matlab/Simulink environment, the suggested system stays robust and stable during sensor faults. In faulty situations, it also maintains the AFR at 14.6 without any degradation, and a comparison with previous studies is carried out. The study shows that the suggested approach is an innovative and highly dependable solution for AFR control in ICEs, preventing engine shutdown and output loss for higher profitability.

Dynamic and sensor fault tolerant control for an intensified heat-exchanger/reactor

In this paper, an active fault tolerant control system is proposed and applied to a new intensified heat exchanger/reactor system. This method consists of an adaptive observer-based fault detection, isolation, and identification scheme and a control law redesign method based on the backstepping approach. The objective of the application of the fault tolerant control system is to ensure the safety and productivity of this intensified heat exchanger/reactor even in the presence of a fault. Both parameter and sensor faults are considered. The effectiveness of the fault tolerant control method based on adaptive observers is validated by simulations on the heat exchanger/reactor system.

Design of a Hybrid Fault-Tolerant Control System for Air–Fuel Ratio Control of Internal Combustion Engines Using Genetic Algorithm and Higher-Order Sliding Mode Control

Fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS) are used in safety and critical applications to improve reliability and availability for sustained operation in fault situations. These systems may be used in process facilities to reduce significant production losses caused by irregular and unplanned equipment tripping. Internal combustion (IC) engines are widely used in the process sector, and efficient air–fuel ratio (AFR) regulation in the fuel system of these engines is critical for increasing engine efficiency, conserving fuel energy, and protecting the environment. In this paper, a hybrid fault-tolerant control system has been proposed, being a combination of two parts which are known as an active fault-tolerant control system and a passive fault-tolerant control system. The active part has been designed by using the genetic algorithm-based fault detection and isolation unit. This genetic algorithm provides estimated values to an engine control unit in case of a fault in any sensor. The passive system is designed by using the higher-order sliding mode control with an extra fuel actuator in the fuel supply line. The performance of the system was tested experimentally in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Based on the simulation results, the designed system can sustain the AFR despite sensor failures. A new method of managing the AFR of an IC engine has been demonstrated in this study, and it is highly capable, robust, reliable, and highly effective. A comparison with the existing works found in the literature also proves its superior performance. By inserting the fault in each sensor, it was clearly observed that proposed HFTCS was much better than the existing model as it was more fault-tolerant due to its ability to work in both online and offline modes. It also provided an exact value of 14.6 of AFR without any degradation.

A Comparative Study of Design of Active Fault-Tolerant Control System for Air–Fuel Ratio Control of Internal Combustion Engine Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm, and Nonlinear Regression-Based Observer Model

In this article, three distinct strategies for designing an Active Fault-Tolerant Control System (AFTCS) for Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) control of an Internal Combustion (IC) engine in a process plant to avoid engine shutdown, are presented. The proposed AFTCS employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and a Nonlinear Regression (NLR)-based observer model in the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit for analytical redundancy. A comparison between these three proposed techniques is carried out to determine the least expensive and most accurate approach. The results show that the nonlinear regression produces highly accurate results by consuming very low computational power, and its response time is also very low as compared to GA and PSO. The results obtained show that NLR requires 99.6% and 93.1% less computational time for throttle and MAP estimation, respectively, by reducing the estimation error to as low as 0.01. The simulation of the proposed system is carried out in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results prove the superior fault tolerance performance for sensor faults of the AFR control system, especially for the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor in terms of less oscillatory response as compared to that reported in existing literature.

A comprehensive review of fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control techniques for modular multi-level converters.

Many faults occur in the modular multi-level converters (MMCs), including unbalancing capacitor voltage, lower and upper arm unbalancing, the line to line voltage unbalancing, sensors and actuators fault, system fault, and sub-modules fault in high as well as medium voltage applications. Several fault-tolerant approaches are presented to overcome these problems, such as active fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS), passive fault-tolerant control system (PFTCS), hybrid fault-tolerant control system (HFTCS), redundant system technique, special power circuit with the controller, and zero sequence voltage methods, which we will explain extensively in this article. This review emphasizes the types of faults in the MMCs and discusses the protection methods under failure conditions. The MMC is more popular in high voltage applications because it not only improves the quality of the grid but also has good harmonic performance in high power transmission. There is no need for any isolated dc sources to operate it. When faults are removed, the efficiency and reliability of the system will be increased. This extensive explanation of the current literature on MMC fault diagnosis and control techniques will conclude which methods provide a more valuable solution. Finally, this paper discusses the best approach to reduce MMC faults and provides a future research direction to the readers.

Genetic algorithm based active fault-tolerant control system for air fuel ratio control of internal combustion engines

Internal Combustion (IC) engines are commonly used in the process industry, and proper Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) regulation in their fuel system is essential for improved engine performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental protection. Since faults in the sensors of the AFR system cause the engine to shut down, fault tolerance is essentially required for them. In this paper, an advanced Active Fault-Tolerant Control System (AFTCS) for AFR control of an IC engine is proposed to prevent the engine shutdown. For analytical redundancy, the proposed AFTCS uses the Genetic Algorithm (GA) based observer model in the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit to generate estimated value for the faulty sensors using the values of other healthy sensors. The proposed framework was simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to verify its effectiveness. In comparison to previous literature works, the results show that the AFR control system has superior fault tolerance output for sensor faults, especially for the MAP sensor, in terms of less oscillatory response. Finally, a comparison of the proposed GA-based AFTCS was carried out with the existing literature works and its superior performance was elaborated.

Advanced Fault-Tolerant Anti-Surge Control System of Centrifugal Compressors for Sensor and Actuator Faults.

Faults frequently occur in the sensors and actuators of process machines to cause shutdown and process interruption, thereby creating costly production loss. centrifugal compressors (CCs) are the most used equipment in process industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and fertilizers. A compressor control system called an anti-surge control (ASC) system based on many critical sensors and actuators is used for the safe operation of CCs. In this paper, an advanced active fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS) has been proposed for sensor and actuator faults of the anti-surge control system of a centrifugal compressor. The AFTCS has been built with a dedicated fault detection and isolation (FDI) unit to detect and isolate the faulty part as well as replace the faulty value with the virtual redundant value from the observer model running in parallel with the other healthy sensors. The analytical redundancy is developed from the mathematical modeling of the sensors to provide estimated values to the controller in case the actual sensor fails. Dual hardware redundancy has been proposed for the anti-surge valve (ASV). The simulation results of the proposed Fault-tolerant control (FTC) for the ASC system in the experimentally validated CC HYSYS model reveal that the system continued to operate in the event of faults in the sensors and actuators maintaining system stability. The proposed FTC for the ASC system is novel in the literature and significant for the process industries to design a highly reliable compressor control system that would continue operation despite faults in the sensors and actuators, hence preventing costly production loss.

RETRACTED: Input design for integrated active fault diagnosis and output tracking control

The fault diagnosis module is a key component integrated in active fault-tolerant control systems. However, the classical methods usually design fault diagnosis and control modules, separately, which ignore the existing interactions between the two key modules in active fault-tolerant control systems. In order to deal with this problem, this paper establishes a framework for integrated design of active fault diagnosis (AFD) and control while ensuring the performance of tracking control. In particular, the input is designed to balance the goal of AFD with the reference output tracking performance. The design of inputs is formulated to minimize the sum of a quadratic function and a non-convex quadratic fractional function at each step, whose global optimality can be obtained under the tight condition of convex relaxation. Furthermore, despite the global optimal condition is not achieved, a locally optimal solution could still be obtained by using our proposed local linearization search algorithm, whose suboptimality can be strictly guaranteed theoretically. At the end, a practical four-tank system example is used to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Design of active fault-tolerant control system for Air-fuel ratio control of internal combustion engines using fuzzy logic controller.

Fault-Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) are used in critical and safety applications to improve performance and stability despite failure modes. As a result, costly production losses related to unusual and unplanned shutdowns can be prevented by incorporating these systems in the critical process plant machines. The Internal Combustion (IC) engines are highly used process plant machines and faults in their sensors will cause their shutdown instigating the need to install FTCS in them. In this paper, an Active Fault-Tolerant Control System (AFTCS) based on a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is suggested to improve the reliability of the Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) control system of an IC engine. For analytical redundancy, a nonlinear Fuzzy Logic (FL) based observer is implemented in the proposed system for the Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit for nonlinear sensors of the AFR system. Lyapunov stability analysis was used for designing a stable system in both faulty and normal conditions. To evaluate its performance, this system was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The simulation results show that the developed system is robust under sensor fault conditions, retaining stability with a minimum decrease of AFR. This study's comparison with the existing literature demonstrates that the proposed system is effective for maintaining the AFR in IC engines during sensor faulty conditions thus reducing shutdown of engine and production loss for increased profits.

Design of generalized fault diagnosis observer and active adaptive fault tolerant controller for aircraft control system.

This study aims to design a generalized fault diagnosis observer (GFDO) and an active fault tolerant control system (AFTCS) for external disturbances based on an aircraft control system and actuator faults. Unlike the traditional approach that assumes external disturbances are norm bounded, the Gronwall Lemma based on the external disturbances constraint condition is modelled to satisfy the system stability. Then, the GFDO is designed by two performance indices defined to simultaneously estimate system states and faults. In addition, the AFTCS is designed to obtain the desired performances in the fault case. When the fault is diagnosed by GFDO, the regular controller switches to AFTCS. Finally, an analysis of the performance of the proposed algorithm is discussed based on simulations of the F-18 aircraft control system, which illustrates the effectiveness and applicability of this method.

CURRENT STATUS OF CONTROL STRATEGIES IN ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEMS IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

There is currently an increasing demand for electric vehicles that require greater autonomy and energy efficiency when driving them. Control strategies in energy recovery systems are crucial to optimize the amount of energy returned to the battery and to ensure safety and stability for the user. In this paper, active fault tolerant control systems (AFTC) and passive fault tolerant control systems (PFTC) with other specialized control strategies (Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks and Perturbation Rejection Controllers) are compared with classical PID controllers.The results of the simulations show that, keeping the battery voltage constant, returns of about 12% of the battery charge capacity are achieved while the braking time of the vehicles is reduced.

Design of Active Fault-Tolerant Control System for Multilevel Inverters to Achieve Greater Reliability With Improved Power Quality

Modern renewable energy systems mostly utilize multilevel converter applications for improved power quality and grid synchronization purposes. A multilevel converter is an electrical device that may offer several amounts of voltage levels at the output in order to make the output more comparable to a pure sine wave. The integrity of the multilevel converter depends on the reliability of individual switches such that the converter will collapse in case of faults in these switches. In this paper, a novel 7-level Fault-Tolerant Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter (FT-CHB-MLI) has been proposed that offers high reliability with improved power quality. A dedicated Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) unit has been built to diagnose the faulty switch and replace it with a standby redundant switch. Total harmonic distortion and the determination of a normalized output voltage factor are employed for fault diagnosis. The Phase Disposition Pulse Width Modulation (PD-PWM) technique has been utilized for switching due to its superior performance as compared to other conventional techniques. This early fault detection method not only identified the issues but also performed preventative actions to keep the system healthy and stable. The proposed system was tested on the MATLAB / Simulink environment to verify its performance. The simulation results demonstrated that the THD has been reduced to almost 18% with a significant increase in reliability with advanced fault-tolerant architecture consisting of FDI units. The reliability analysis was carried out using Markov chains that also showed its increased reliability. A comparison of the proposed work with literature was also carried out to demonstrate its superior performance with increased reliability.

Control allocation based fault tolerant control of descriptor system with actuator saturation

This paper deals with the design of active fault-tolerant control (FTC) system based on control allocation (CA) technique for the uncertain descriptor system (DS) with actuator saturation. This work assumes that a fault detection unit is available to estimate the actuator fault. The proposed CA technique is responsible to redistribute the control effort to the healthy actuators taking the advantage of actuator redundancy of the DS. The so-called virtual control law is designed based on a variable gain super twisting sliding mode algorithm (VGSTSMA) to meet the admissibility criteria of continuous control input for the DS. This VGSTSMA based control strategy is designed based on the generalized regular form (GRF) of DS ensuring the robustness against the actuator faults, error in the fault estimation, and the external uncertainties. The CA scheme developed here is applicable to the DS even with a full rank input matrix which is different from the traditional design where it generally deals with the system with rank deficient input matrix. Furthermore, a static control redistribution mechanism is introduced to handle the actuator saturation which is responsible to re-allocate the excess control efforts to the available healthy actuators in the face of actuator saturation. Finally, a dual-pipe heat exchanger unit, modeled as DS, is simulated with proposed CA-based FTC such that the system can follow the time varying and constant reference trajectories in a situation of actuator faults and saturation. The simulation results are compared with the CA-based FTC where virtual control is designed based on super-twisting algorithm (STA) and with the traditional pseudo inverse-CA-based FTC to establish the superiority of the proposed scheme.

Recent advances in active fault tolerant flight control systems

The Flight Control System (FCS) is considered as the brain of an aerial vehicle. It is a mechanism through which pilot’s commands are transferred to the actuators of the aircraft control surfaces. In order to ensure safety and increase reliability of aerial vehicles, development of fault tolerant FCSs has been the focus of research community for past few decades. Fault tolerant ability enables an aircraft to maintain satisfactory performance even in the state of a fault. Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) are categorized as passive and active control systems. Passive FTCS are designed to mitigate the effects of certain known faults. These faults can be related to sensor failure, actuator failure, or system component failure. On the other hand, active FTCS contain a controller reconfiguration mechanism, whereby, they can adjust the controller input online to mitigate the effects of the faults. In this way, they can accommodate complicated and versatile faults as compared to their passive counterparts. This paper presents a review of significant research during last decade in active fault tolerant control with applications to FCSs. A review of state-of-the-art works in this domain has also been presented. Upon review, these state-of-the-art research interests have been categorized into respective categories. Furthermore, research works have been cataloged based on their technology readiness levels. Based on these reviews, future research directions have also been highlighted.
