Convergent functional effects of antidepressants in major depressive disorder: a neuroimaging meta-analysis.

Neuroimaging studies have provided valuable insights into the macroscale impacts of antidepressants on brain functions in patients with major depressive disorder. However, the findings of individual studies are inconsistent. Here, we aimed to provide a quantitative synthesis of the literature to identify convergence of the reported findings at both regional and network levels and to examine their associations with neurotransmitter systems. Through a comprehensive search in PubMed and Scopus databases, we reviewed 5258 abstracts and identified 36 eligible functional neuroimaging studies on antidepressant effects in major depressive disorder. Activation likelihood estimation was used to investigate regional convergence of the reported foci of antidepressant effects, followed by functional decoding and connectivity mapping of the convergent clusters. Additionally, utilizing group-averaged data from the Human Connectome Project, we assessed convergent resting-state functional connectivity patterns of the reported foci. Next, we compared the convergent circuit with the circuits targeted by transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy. Last, we studied the association of regional and network-level convergence maps with selected neurotransmitter receptors/transporters maps. No regional convergence was found across foci of treatment-associated alterations in functional imaging. Subgroup analysis in the Treated > Untreated contrast revealed a convergent cluster in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which was associated with working memory and attention behavioral domains. Moreover, we found network-level convergence of the treatment-associated alterations in a circuit more prominent in the frontoparietal areas. This circuit was co-aligned with circuits targeted by "anti-subgenual" and "Beam F3"transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy. We observed no significant correlations between our meta-analytic findings with the maps of neurotransmitter receptors/transporters. Our findings highlight the importance of the frontoparietal network and the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the therapeutic effects of antidepressants, which may relate to their role in improving executive functions and emotional processing.

A meta-analysis of letter-sound integration: Assimilation and accommodation in the superior temporal gyrus.

Despite being a relatively new cultural phenomenon, the ability to perform letter-sound integration is readily acquired even though it has not had time to evolve in the brain. Leading theories of how the brain accommodates literacy acquisition include the neural recycling hypothesis and the assimilation-accommodation hypothesis. The neural recycling hypothesis proposes that a new cultural skill is developed by "invading" preexisting neural structures to support a similar cognitive function, while the assimilation-accommodation hypothesis holds that a new cognitive skill relies on direct invocation of preexisting systems (assimilation) and adds brain areas based on task requirements (accommodation). Both theories agree that letter-sound integration may be achieved by reusing pre-existing functionally similar neural bases, but differ in their proposals of how this occurs. We examined the evidence for each hypothesis by systematically comparing the similarities and differences between letter-sound integration and two other types of preexisting and functionally similar audiovisual (AV) processes, namely object-sound and speech-sound integration, by performing an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis. All three types of AV integration recruited the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), while speech-sound integration additionally activated the bilateral middle STG and letter-sound integration directly invoked the AV areas involved in speech-sound integration. These findings suggest that letter-sound integration may reuse the STG for speech-sound and object-sound integration through an assimilation-accommodation mechanism.

Patterns of abnormal activations in severe mental disorders a transdiagnostic data-driven meta-analysis of task-based fMRI studies.

Studies suggest severe mental disorders (SMDs), such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, are associated with common alterations in brain activity, albeit with a graded level of impairment. However, discrepancies between study findings likely to results from both small sample sizes and the use of different functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tasks. To address these issues, data-driven meta-analytic approach designed to identify homogeneous brain co-activity patterns across tasks was conducted to better characterize the common and distinct alterations between these disorders. A hierarchical clustering analysis was conducted to identify groups of studies reporting similar neuroimaging results, independent of task type and psychiatric diagnosis. A traditional meta-analysis (activation likelihood estimation) was then performed within each of these groups of studies to extract their aberrant activation maps. A total of 762 fMRI study contrasts were targeted, comprising 13 991 patients with SMDs. Hierarchical clustering analysis identified 5 groups of studies (meta-analytic groupings; MAGs) being characterized by distinct aberrant activation patterns across SMDs: (1) emotion processing; (2) cognitive processing; (3) motor processes, (4) reward processing, and (5) visual processing. While MAG1 was mostly commonly impaired, MAG2 was more impaired in schizophrenia, while MAG3 and MAG5 revealed no differences between disorder. MAG4 showed the strongest between-diagnoses differences, particularly in the striatum, posterior cingulate cortex, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. SMDs are characterized mostly by common deficits in brain networks, although differences between disorders are also present. This study highlights the importance of studying SMDs simultaneously rather than independently.

Gray matter and cognitive alteration related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients: combining ALE meta-analysis and MACM analysis.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is frequently comorbid with cognitive impairment, but it has not been paid enough attention, and its neuroanatomical characteristics have not been fully identified. Voxel-based morphometric (VBM) studies comparing gray matter (GM) abnormalities in COPD patients with healthy controls (HCs) were searched using 8 electronic databases from the inception to March 2023. Stereotactic data were extracted and tested for convergence and differences using the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) method. Moreover, based on the ALE results, a structural meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) was conducted to explore the co-atrophy pattern in patients with COPD. Last, behavioral analysis was performed to assess the functional roles of the regions affected by COPD. In total, 11 studies on COPD with 949 participants were included. Voxel-based meta-analysis revealed significant GM abnormalities in the right postcentral gyrus (including inferior parietal lobule), left precentral gyrus, and left cingulate gyrus (including paracentral lobule) in patients with COPD compared with HCs. Further MACM analysis revealed a deeper co-atrophy pattern between the brain regions with abnormal GM structure and the insula in COPD patients. Behavioral analysis showed that the abnormal GM structure in the left cingulate gyrus (including paracentral lobule) was strongly associated with cognitive function, especially executive function. COPD comorbid with cognitive impairment has a specific neurostructural basis of GM structural abnormalities, which may also involve a deeper co-atrophy pattern between the insula. These findings enhance our understanding of the underlying neuropathogenesis and suggest potential imaging markers for cognitive impairment in COPD patients. Comparison of resting-state brain activity between insomnia and generalized anxiety disorder: A coordinate-based meta-analysis.

Patients with insomnia disorder (ID) usually experience a greater burden of comorbid anxiety symptoms. However, the neural mechanism under the mutual relationship between ID and anxiety remains largely unclear. The meta-analysis aimed to explore the concordance and distinction of regional brain functional activity in patients with ID and those with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) using coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation approach. Studies using resting-state regional homogeneity, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), or fractional ALFF in patients with ID or GAD were included by searching multiple databases up to May 24, 2024. Using meta-analytic approach, 21 studies of ID vs. healthy controls (HC) and 16 studies of GAD vs. HC were included to illuminate the common and distinct patterns between the two disorders. Results showed that ID and GAD shared increased brain activities in the left posterior cingulate cortex and left precuneus, as well as decreased brain activity in the left medial prefrontal cortex. Additionally, compared with ID, GAD showed greater increased activities in the left superior frontal gyrus. Our study reveals both common and different activation patterns between ID and GAD, which may provide novel insights for understanding the neural basis of the two disorders and enlighten the possibility of the development of more targeted treatment strategies for ID and GAD.

Task-State Functional MRI of Brain Regions with Reduced Activation in Aphasia Patients: A Meta-analysis.

Language is one of the most celebrated hallmarks of human cognition. With the continuous improvement of medical technology, functional MRI (fMRI) has been used in aphasia. Although many related studies have been carried out, most studies have not extensively focused on brain regions with reduced activation in aphasic patients. The aim of this study was to identify brain regions normally activated in healthy controls but with reduced activation in aphasic patients during fMRI language tasks. We collected all previous task-state fMRI studies of secondary aphasia. The brain regions showed normal activation in healthy controls and reduced activation in aphasic patients were conducted activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to obtain the brain regions with consistently reduced activation in aphasic patients. The ALE meta-analysis revealed that the left inferior frontal gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus, left fusiform gyrus, left lentiform nucleus and the culmen of the cerebellum were the brain regions with reduced activation in aphasic patients. These findings from the ALE meta-analysis have significant implications for understanding the language network and the potential for recovery of language functions in individuals with aphasia.

Neural effects of acupuncture on stroke patients with motor dysfunction: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been used in many studies to explore the neural mechanism of acupuncture in patients with post-stroke motor dysfunction. Inconsistent results have been found in these studies, however. This activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was designed to quantitatively integrate changes in brain activity and the neurological effects of acupuncture on patients with motor dysfunction after stroke. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, China Science and Technology Journal Database, the China Biology Medicine, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform for literature from the establishment of the database until March 21, 2024. Research papers were selected, data extracted, and quality assessment was done independently by two researchers. The GingerALE software was used for meta-analysis, and Jackknife sensitivity analysis was employed to assess result robustness. We ended up analyzing 14 studies that included 235 patients and 100 healthy people. ALE meta-analysis showed that Compared with healthy people, the enhanced brain region in poststroke patients with motor dysfunction was located in the left posterior lobe of the cerebellum, the left inferior frontal gyrus, and the left precuneus (p < 0.001). After acupuncture, the activated regions were mainly located in the left posterior lobe of the cerebellum, the right lentiform nucleus putamen, the right medial frontal gyrus, the right inferior frontal gyrus, the left precuneus, the right middle temporal gyrus, the left claustrum, the left cerebellar tonsil, the right superior marginal gyrus, the inactivated area is located in the right medial frontal gyrus the left precentral gyrus and the right precuneus (p < 0.001). Charting the brain networks of impulsivity: Meta-analytic synthesis, functional connectivity modelling, and neurotransmitter associations

Abstract Impulsivity is a multi-dimensional construct that plays a crucial role in human behaviour and is believed to be a transdiagnostic marker of several psychiatric disorders. However, given its multi-faceted nature, investigations of its neural correlates are challenging and systematic comparisons across dimensions are lacking. In this study, we used a comprehensive multi-modal approach to investigate the functional network organisation of two dimensions in which impulsivity manifests: decision-making and response inhibition. Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses of task-based fMRI studies within each dimension identified two distinct and non-overlapping functional systems. One located in the default-mode network, associated with value-based judgements and goal-directed decision-making, and the other distributed across higher-order networks associated with cognitive control. Resting-state functional connectivity revealed the two systems were organised into four specialised communities of default-mode, cingulo-insular, fronto-parietal, and temporal regions. Finally, given the widespread use of neurotransmitter-acting medication to treat conditions with impulsive symptoms, we investigated the association between this organisation and neurochemistry and found that integration across communities was associated with PET-derived serotonin receptor density. Our findings reinforce insights from previous behavioural research and provide substantial evidence for the multi-dimensional nature of impulsivity on the neural level. This highlights the necessity for a comprehensive dimensional ontology on all levels of investigation to address impulsivity in a transdiagnostic manner.

Structural and functional brain alterations in laryngeal dystonia: A coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Laryngeal dystonia (LD) is an isolated, task-specific, focal dystonia characterized by intermittent spasms of laryngeal muscles impairing speech production. Although recent studies have demonstrated neural alterations in LD, the consistency of findings across studies is not well-established, limiting their translational applicability. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify studies reporting stereotactic coordinates of peak structural and functional abnormalities in LD patients compared to healthy controls, followed by a coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis. A total of 21 functional and structural neuroimaging studies, including 31 experiments in 521 LD patients and 448 healthy controls, met the study inclusion criteria. The multimodal meta-analysis of these studies identified abnormalities in the bilateral primary motor cortices, the left inferior parietal lobule and striatum, the right insula, and the supplementary motor area in LD patients compared to healthy controls. The meta-analytical findings reinforce the current view of dystonia as a neural network disorder and consolidate evidence for future investigations probing these targets with new therapies.

Engagement of the speech motor system in challenging speech perception: Activation likelihood estimation meta-analyses.

The relationship between speech production and perception is a topic of ongoing debate. Some argue that there is little interaction between the two, while others claim they share representations and processes. One perspective suggests increased recruitment of the speech motor system in demanding listening situations to facilitate perception. However, uncertainties persist regarding the specific regions involved and the listening conditions influencing its engagement. This study used activation likelihood estimation in coordinate-based meta-analyses to investigate the neural overlap between speech production and three speech perception conditions: speech-in-noise, spectrally degraded speech and linguistically complex speech. Neural overlap was observed in the left frontal, insular and temporal regions. Key nodes included the left frontal operculum (FOC), left posterior lateral part of the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), left planum temporale (PT), and left pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA). The left IFG activation was consistently observed during linguistic processing, suggesting sensitivity to the linguistic content of speech. In comparison, the left pre-SMA activation was observed when processing degraded and noisy signals, indicating sensitivity to signal quality. Activations of the left PT and FOC activation were noted in all conditions, with the posterior FOC area overlapping in all conditions. Our meta-analysis reveals context-independent (FOC, PT) and context-dependent (pre-SMA, posterior lateral IFG) regions within the speech motor system during challenging speech perception. These regions could contribute to sensorimotor integration and executive cognitive control for perception and production.

The reverberation of implementation errors in a neuroimaging meta-analytic software package: A citation analysis to a technical report on GingerALE

GingerALE, a widely used neuroimaging meta-analysis software package, contained errors in earlier versions that were later corrected. The technical report “Implementation errors in the GingerALE Software: description and recommendations” by Eickhoff et al. (2017) documented these errors and their corresponding fixes. In the current study, the papers that cited the GingerALE technical report were analyzed to identify the reasons for these citations. In August 2023, a search through Web of Science Core Collection identified 158 papers that cited the GingerALE technical report. These papers were manually examined to extract the citation statements and code the citation reasons into 12 categories. The analysis revealed that the most frequent reason for citing the report was to justify the use of a specific statistical threshold, followed by a simple acknowledgement of using GingerALE, acknowledging the impact of the errors in earlier versions of GingerALE on prior studies or the lack of effect on current results, and justifying the number of experiments in a meta-analysis. A small number of reasons related to non-GingerALE software, matters not related to activation likelihood estimation (ALE), or statements not mentioned in the GingerALE technical report.

Spatial memory encoding is associated with the anterior and posterior hippocampus: An fMRI activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

It has been hypothesized that differential processing occurs along the longitudinal (anterior-posterior) axis of the hippocampus. One hypothesis is that spatial memory (during both encoding and retrieval) is associated with the posterior hippocampus. An alternative hypothesis is that memory encoding (either spatial or nonspatial) is associated with the anterior hippocampus and memory retrieval is associated with the posterior hippocampus. Of importance, during spatial memory encoding, the spatial-posterior hypothesis predicts posterior hippocampal involvement, whereas the encoding-retrieval hypothesis predicts anterior hippocampal involvement. To distinguish between these hypotheses, we conducted a coordinate-based fMRI activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of 26 studies (with a total of 435 participants) that reported hippocampal activity during spatial memory encoding and/or spatial memory retrieval. Both spatial memory encoding and spatial memory retrieval produced extensive activity along the longitudinal axis of the hippocampus as well as the entorhinal cortex, the perirhinal cortex, and the parahippocampal cortex. Critically, the contrast of spatial memory encoding and spatial memory retrieval produced activations in both the anterior hippocampus and the posterior hippocampus. That spatial memory encoding produced activity in both the anterior and posterior hippocampus can be taken to reject strict forms of the spatial-posterior hypothesis, which stipulates that all forms of spatial memory produce activity in the posterior hippocampus, and the encoding-retrieval hypothesis, which stipulates that all forms of encoding versus retrieval produce activity in only the anterior hippocampus. Our results indicate that spatial memory encoding can involve the anterior hippocampus and the posterior hippocampus.

Local functional connectivity abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: A meta-analytic investigation using minimum Bayes factor activation likelihood estimation

Functional magnetic resonance imaging research employing regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis has uncovered aberrant local brain connectivity in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in comparison with healthy controls. However, the precise localization, extent, and possible overlap of these aberrations are still not fully understood. To bridge this gap, we applied a novel meta-analytic and Bayesian method (minimum Bayes Factor Activation Likelihood Estimation, mBF-ALE) for a systematic exploration of local functional connectivity alterations in MCI and AD brains. We extracted ReHo data via a standardized MEDLINE database search, which included 35 peer-reviewed experiments, 1,256 individuals with AD or MCI, 1,118 healthy controls, and 205 x-y-z coordinates of ReHo variation. We then separated the data into two distinct datasets: one for MCI and the other for AD. Two mBF-ALE analyses were conducted, thresholded at “very strong evidence” (mBF ≥ 150), with a minimum cluster size of 200 mm³. We also assessed the spatial consistency and sensitivity of our Bayesian results using the canonical version of the ALE algorithm. For MCI, we observed two clusters of ReHo decrease and one of ReHo increase. Decreased local connectivity was notable in the left precuneus (Brodmann area – BA 7) and left inferior temporal gyrus (BA 20), while increased connectivity was evident in the right parahippocampal gyrus (BA 36). The canonical ALE confirmed these locations, except for the inferior temporal gyrus. In AD, one cluster each of ReHo decrease and increase were found, with decreased connectivity in the right posterior cingulate cortex (BA 30 extending to BA 23) and increased connectivity in the left posterior cingulate cortex (BA 31). These locations were confirmed by the canonical ALE. The identification of these distinct functional connectivity patterns sheds new light on the complex pathophysiology of MCI and AD, offering promising directions for future neuroimaging-based interventions. Additionally, the use of a Bayesian framework for statistical thresholding enhances the robustness of neuroimaging meta-analyses, broadening its applicability to small datasets.

Multimodal abnormalities of brain structures in adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents and young adults contributes significantly to global morbidity, with inconsistent findings on brain structural changes from structural magnetic resonance imaging studies. Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) offers a method to synthesize these diverse findings and identify consistent brain anomalies. To identify consistent brain structural changes in adolescents and young adults with MDD using ALE meta-analysis. We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure databases for neuroimaging studies on MDD among adolescents and young adults published up to November 19, 2023. Two independent researchers performed the study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction. The ALE technique was employed to synthesize findings on localized brain function anomalies in MDD patients, which was supplemented by sensitivity analyses. Twenty-two studies comprising fourteen diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies and eight voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies, and involving 451 MDD patients and 465 healthy controls (HCs) for DTI and 664 MDD patients and 946 HCs for VBM, were included. DTI-based ALE demonstrated significant reductions in fractional anisotropy (FA) values in the right caudate head, right insula, and right lentiform nucleus putamen in adolescents and young adults with MDD compared to HCs, with no regions exhibiting increased FA values. VBM-based ALE did not demonstrate significant alterations in gray matter volume. Sensitivity analyses highlighted consistent findings in the right caudate head (11 of 14 analyses), right insula (10 of 14 analyses), and right lentiform nucleus putamen (11 of 14 analyses). Structural alterations in the right caudate head, right insula, and right lentiform nucleus putamen in young MDD patients may contribute to its recurrent nature, offering insights for targeted therapies.

Convergent functional change of frontoparietal network in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a voxel-based meta-analysis.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric illness with complex clinical manifestations. Cognitive dysfunction may underlie OC symptoms. The frontoparietal network (FPN) is a key region involved in cognitive control. However, the findings of impaired FPN regions have been inconsistent. We employed meta-analysis to identify the fMRI-specific abnormalities of the FPN in OCD. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCOhost were searched to screen resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies exploring dysfunction in the FPN of OCD patients using three indicators: the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation/fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF/fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity (FC). We compared all patients with OCD and control group in a primary analysis, and divided the studies by medication in secondary meta-analyses with the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) algorithm. A total of 31 eligible studies with 1359 OCD patients (756 men) and 1360 healthy controls (733 men) were included in the primary meta-analysis. We concluded specific changes in brain regions of FPN, mainly in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC, BA9), left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG, BA47), left superior temporal gyrus (STG, BA38), right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC, BA29), right inferior parietal lobule (IPL, BA40) and bilateral caudate. Additionally, altered connectivity within- and between-FPN were observed in the bilateral DLPFC, right cingulate gyrus and right thalamus. The secondary analyses showed improved convergence relative to the primary analysis. OCD patients showed dysfunction FPN, including impaired local important nodal brain regions and hypoconnectivity within the FPN (mainly in the bilateral DLPFC), during the resting state. Moreover, FPN appears to interact with the salience network (SN) and default mode network (DMN) through pivotal brain regions. Consistent with the hypothesis of fronto-striatal circuit dysfunction, especially in the dorsal cognitive circuit, these findings provide strong evidence for integrating two pathophysiological models of OCD.

The neural network of sensory attenuation: A neuroimaging meta-analysis.

Sensory attenuation refers to the reduction in sensory intensity resulting from self-initiated actions compared to stimuli initiated externally. A classic example is scratching oneself without feeling itchy. This phenomenon extends across various sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, somatosensory, and nociceptive stimuli. The internal forward model proposes that during voluntary actions, an efferent copy of the action command is sent out to predict sensory feedback. This predicted sensory feedback is then compared with the actual sensory feedback, leading to the suppression or reduction of sensory stimuli originating from self-initiated actions. To further elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying sensory attenuation effect, we conducted an extensive meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) studies. Utilizing activation likelihood estimation (ALE) analysis, our results revealed significant activations in a prominent cluster encompassing the right superior temporal gyrus (rSTG), right middle temporal gyrus (rMTG), and right insula when comparing external-generated with self-generated conditions. Additionally, significant activation was observed in the right anterior cerebellum when comparing self-generated to external-generated conditions. Further analysis using meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) unveiled distinct brain networks co-activated with the rMTG and right cerebellum, respectively. Based on these findings, we propose that sensory attenuation arises from the suppression of reflexive inputs elicited by self-initiated actions through the internal forward modeling of a cerebellum-centered action prediction network, enabling the "sensory conflict detection" regions to effectively discriminate between inputs resulting from self-induced actions and those originating externally.

Neural correlates of musical timbre: an ALE meta-analysis of neuroimaging data.

Timbre is a central aspect of music that allows listeners to identify musical sounds and conveys musical emotion, but also allows for the recognition of actions and is an important structuring property of music. The former functions are known to be implemented in a ventral auditory stream in processing musical timbre. While the latter functions are commonly attributed to areas in a dorsal auditory processing stream in other musical domains, its involvement in musical timbre processing is so far unknown. To investigate if musical timbre processing involves both dorsal and ventral auditory pathways, we carried out an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of 18 experiments from 17 published neuroimaging studies on musical timbre perception. We identified consistent activations in Brodmann areas (BA) 41, 42, and 22 in the bilateral transverse temporal gyri, the posterior superior temporal gyri and planum temporale, in BA 40 of the bilateral inferior parietal lobe, in BA 13 in the bilateral posterior Insula, and in BA 13 and 22 in the right anterior insula and superior temporal gyrus. The vast majority of the identified regions are associated with the dorsal and ventral auditory processing streams. We therefore propose to frame the processing of musical timbre in a dual-stream model. Moreover, the regions activated in processing timbre show similarities to the brain regions involved in processing several other fundamental aspects of music, indicating possible shared neural bases of musical timbre and other musical domains.

A meta-analytical account of the functional lateralization of the reading network

The observation that the neural correlates of reading are left-lateralized is ubiquitous in the cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychological literature. Still, reading is served by a constellation of neural units, and the extent to which these units are consistently left-lateralized is unclear. In this regard, the functional lateralization of the fusiform gyrus is of particular interest, by virtue of its hypothesized role as a “visual word form area”. A quantitative Activation Likelihood Estimation meta-analysis was conducted on activation foci from 35 experiments investigating silent reading, and both a whole-brain and a bayesian ROI-based approach were used to assess the lateralization of the data submitted to meta-analysis. Perirolandic areas showed the highest level of left-lateralization, the fusiform cortex and the parietal cortex exhibited only a moderate pattern of left-lateralization, while in the occipital, insular cortices and in the cerebellum the lateralization turned out to be the lowest observed. The relatively limited functional lateralization of the fusiform gyrus was further explored in a regression analysis on the lateralization profile of each study. The functional lateralization of the fusiform gyrus during reading was positively associated with the lateralization of the precentral and inferior occipital gyri and negatively associated with the lateralization of the triangular portion of the inferior frontal gyrus and of the temporal pole. Overall, the present data highlight how lateralization patterns differ within the reading network. Furthermore, the present data highlight how the functional lateralization of the fusiform gyrus during reading is related to the degree of functional lateralization of other language brain areas.

Activation Likelihood Estimation Neuroimaging Meta-Analysis: a Powerful Tool for Emotion Research.

Over the past two decades, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become the primary tool for exploring neural correlates of emotion. To enhance the reliability of results in understanding the complex nature of emotional experiences, researchers combine findings from multiple fMRI studies using coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA). As one of the most widely employed CBMA methods worldwide, activation likelihood estimation (ALE) is of great importance in affective neuroscience and neuropsychology. This comprehensive review provides an introductory guide for implementing the ALE method in emotion research, outlining the experimental steps involved. By presenting a case study about the emotion of disgust, with regard to both its core and social processing, we offer insightful commentary as to how ALE can enable researchers to produce consistent results and, consequently, fruitfully investigate the neural mechanisms underpinning emotions, facilitating further progress in this field.
