AIR evacuation of patients contributed outstandingly toward saving lives during World War II and the police action in Korea, and continues to render valuable service today. More than half a million patients have been safely airlifted from such worldwide outposts as the Far and Middle East, the South Pacific, and Europe. Short distance feeder flights within the United States daily bring patients to specialized medical centers. It is the flight nurse's job to provide the continuity of care her patients must have while they are speeding toward the hospital. Hers is a challenging responsibility worth every moment of the six weeks of special studies, excitement, and hard work, which have prepared her for her role. Flight nurse training is available to United States Air Force and Navy registered nurses, and to nurses of certain other nations at the United States Air Force School of Aviation
