The development of a digital library to support the teaching of computer graphics and visualization

The ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee web site is being evolved into a Digital Library that will be a worldwide resource for Graphics and Visualization Education. We discuss the history of the website, including a long-standing partnership with the National Science Foundation, and the current work to evolve it into a Digital Library. Finally, we discuss a proposed vision of the future of the Digital Library and how we are working to achieve that vision.

Animating fracture

We have developed a simulation technique that uses non-linear finite element analysis and elastic fracture mechanics to compute physically plausible motion for three-dimensional, solid objects as they break, crack, or tear. When these objects deform beyond their mechanical limits, the system automatically determines where fractures should begin and in what directions they should propagate. The system allows fractures to propagate in arbitrary directions by dynamically restructuring the elements of a tetrahedral mesh. Because cracks are not limited to the original element boundaries, the objects can form irregularly shaped shards and edges as they shatter. The result is realistic fracture patterns such as the ones shown in our examples. This paper presents an overview of the fracture algorithm, the details are presented in our ACM SIGGRAPH 1999 and 2002 papers.

ACM SIGGRAPH outreach to the computer games community

As noted in Computer Graphics 34(1) February 2000, ACM SIGGRAPH began the year 2000 with a new special project to outreach to the computer games community. So far, we have received a terrific number of emails from computer games professionals and other interested folks. Simultaneously, the SIGGRAPH 2000 Courses Committee accepted an innovative course entitled: "Games Research: the Science of Interactive Entertainment," Craig Reynolds of Sony Computer Entertainment America and Chris Hecker of definition six, inc. are the course organizers. As part of this SIGGRAPH outreach effort, the CMP Game Media Group provided me a warm welcome at the Game Developers Conference 2000. Below is the report of my adventures.

GVE '99

The Graphics and Visualization Education Workshop (GVE ’99), held July 3–5, 1999 in Coimbra, Portugal, was a jointly-sponsored event of Eurographics and ACM SIGGRAPH and was partially supported by the National Science Foundation. It was chaired by Werner Hansmann, University of Hamburg (Germany), Mike McGrath, Colorado School of Mines (USA), and Jose Teixeira, University of Coimbra (Portugal). It assembled 44 colleagues from twelve countries to consider the future in computer graphics education. Among the workshop themes were curriculum for computer graphics in computer science and in art, development of computer graphics for teaching, media, interaction, and collaborations between disciplines and institutions. The workshop was organized as a working event to give all the participants the best opportunity to talk with each other and develop ideas along the themes above. Participants were chosen based on position papers submitted to the workshop organizers, and a small number of participants were chosen to present their papers as a way to get particular ideas into the discussion. Mike Bailey of the San Diego Supercomputer Center was keynoter for the workshop, and Jack Bresenham of Winthrop College summarized the discussions of the workshop in a closing presentation. This note reports the workshop results as developed by the working groups by the end of the workshop.
