Organization of diencephalon of the sturgeons. Posterior tubercular area. Caudal region

Cytoarchitectonics of caudal region of the posterior tubercular area of diencephalon was studied in four species of the true sturgeons: the giant sturgeon, Huso huso L., Kura sturgeon, Acipenser guldenstadtii persicus n. Kurensis Belyaeff, stellate sturgeon, Ac. stellatus Pall. and the barbel sturgeon Ac. nudiventris Lov. Morphologic organization of the brain region was studied by using staining techniques of Nissl and Bielschowski (Viktorov’s modification). Five nuclei were identified in the caudal region of the posterior tubercular area in all studied species: caudomedial, caudal and lateral thalamic nuclei forming the medial group, as well as lateral torus and posterior thalamic nuclei forming the lateral group. The latter two nuclei have their subdivisions. Characteristic peculiarity of the caudal region is the presence of only migrated nuclei. It is concluded that the level of differentiation of the diencephalon posterior tubercular area of the sturgeons allows considering it as one of the most evolutionary advanced structures among those in the actinopterygian fish line.

Organization of diencephalon of the sturgeons. Posterior tubercular area. Periventricular and rostral parts

Cytoarchitectonics of periventricular and rostral parts of the posterior tubercular area of diencephalon was studied in four species of the cartilaginous ganoids by using routine Nissl staining and Bielschowski impregnation technique in Viktorov’s modification. The posterior tubercular area in the giant sturgeon Huso huso L., the Kura sturgeon Acipenser guldenstadtii persicus n. Kurensis Belyaeff, the stellate sturgeon Ac. stellatus Pall., and the barbel sturgeon Ac. nudiventris Lov. was shown to have similar structure. Six structures were identified in these areas: the periventricular nucleus, paraventricular organ, nucleus of the paraventricular organ, and posterior tuberal nucleus in the periventricular region and preglomerular medial and lateral nuclei in the rostral region. Both nuclei of the rostral zone are migrated nuclei. Out of nuclei of the posterior tubercle regions, the posterior tuberal and medial preglomerular nuclei are characterized by polymorphism of cellular elements. A conclusion is made that these parts of the posterior tubercular area in the sturgeons considered to be the lower ray-finned fish are comparable with those of the higher teleosts, and even are more differentiated according to some parameters.

A comparison of the spawning migration, genetic and biological parameters of stellate sturgeon from the Volga population in 1985 and 1996

The dynamics of changes in several genetic and biological parameters of the Volga stellate sturgeon during the spawning runs of 1985 and 1996 were studied by electrophoresis and morphometry and compared. The dynamics of changes in genetic diversity of the spawners running spawners is repeated in many respects every 11 years, suggesting that the intrapopulation diversity is maintained in time. The among-sample diversity of late spring stellate sturgeon, whose spawners spawners are used in hatchery, decreased twofold. Along with decreases in body length and weight and mean age, the females displayed increased heterozygosities and genotype diversity index at LDH3 and PGM1 loci, while the males displayed a statistically significant decrease in body length. During the period in question, the heterozygosity at EST2 locus significantly decreased. The changes observed are connected with the artificial reproduction and non-rational fishing. Preservation of genetic diversity in stellate sturgeon requires that the specific features of the structure and ecology of the species reproduced are taken into account.

Assessment of Extinction Risk and Reasons for Decline in Sturgeon

Sturgeon populations in the Danube River have been affected by a combination of hydropower development, over-harvesting, habitat degradation from agricultural and industrial practices and from urbanization. The effects of these changes have been monitored on six sturgeon species inhabiting the Danube River. Two of them are resident species, while the other four migrate to the river for spawning. Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) has completely disappeared from this region. Ship sturgeon (Acipenser nudiventris) is very rare in professional fishing catches. Beluga (Huso huso), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) and sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) are endangered with different levels of extinction risk. Here, we model the time dependence of the beluga and Russian sturgeon catch in the Serbian part of the Danube River. Predicted extinction of Russian sturgeon was estimated to fall around the middle of the century, and for beluga approximately at middle of the millennium. Suggestions for sturgeon conservation measures on a national level and coordination of all relevant institutions in Serbia are also presented.

Organization of diencephalon of the sturgeons. Preoptic area

Cytoarchitectonics of preoptic area of diencephalon of chondroid ganoid fish (the sturgeons) was studied in serial sections using Nissl and Bilschowski techniques, the latter in Viktorov’s modification). The preoptic area of the hausen, Huso huso L., Kura sturgeon, Acipenser guldenstaedtii persicus n. kurensis Belyaeff, Caspian sturgeon, Acipenser stellatus Pall. and the sturgeon Acipenser nudioventris Lov. was shown to be one of the largest parts of diencephalon. It is located along the rostral excess of the third ventricle and the anterior third of the ventricle thalamic part. Eight nuclei are identified in the preoptic area: (1) anterior microcellular preoptic nucleus, (2) suprachiasmatic nucleus, (3) accessory preoptic nucleus, (4) intrachiasmatic nucleus, (5) magnocellular preoptic nucleus, (6) posterior microcellular preoptic nucleus, (7) caudal preoptic nucleus, (8) entopeduncular nucleus. Besides, microcellular, magnocellular, and gigantocellular parts are identified in the magnocellular preoptic nucleus. The obtained results indicate high differentiation of this area of the sturgeons among Actinopterygii.

Variation in morphometric and genetic characteristics of stellate sturgeon juveniles raised at different densities

Genetic and size/weight characteristics of stellate sturgeon juveniles were examined under standard and twice lower than standard densities. Viability, growth rate, and variability of juveniles were higher at standard density. Individuals with different genotypes exhibited higher viability and faster growth at different densities, which was particularly pronounced in case of the PGM1 locus. Despite the high phenotypic variability of sturgeon juveniles under standard conditions, its genetic component was higher at low density. It was concluded that low density conditions, which are closer to the natural ones, mediate maintenance of genetic variability.

BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF MAIN MARINE MIGRATORY STURGEONS IN ROMANIAN DANUBE RIVER MIGRATION OF FISHES IN ROMANIAN DANUBE RIVER, No 4

Marine migratory sturgeons form one of the most valuable fish population of the Lower Danube River ecosystem and are also extremely important for the economy of Romania and some other riverside countries and freshwater fisheries. Decreasing sturgeon presence in the last several decades has been a true concern either for commercial fishermen and biologists. This paper is trying to analyze some biological aspects of three sturgeon species: beluga (Huso huso Linnaeus, 1758), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedti Brand, 1833) and stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus, Brandt, 1833) and to compare them with formerly registered data and scientific information. This paper also tries to reveal some ecological particularities concerning their migration and natural reproduction process that could help scientists and other people to find the most probable causes of the tendency why stocks are decreasing and suggesting some pertinent actions to be done on the necessary mitigation and protection activities concerning actual and further presence of these very interesting sturgeon species in Danube River.

STUDY OF MIGRATORY STURGEON CAPTURES IN ROMANIAN SIDE OF DANUBE RIVER MIGRATION OF FISHES IN ROMANIAN DANUBE RIVER, No 3

Study of fish captures could bring out valuable information on tendencies in stocks dynamics as well as on the level of “fishing pressure” on natural fish population. Decreasing amount of annual captures of marine migratory sturgeons that migrate in Danube River for spawning indicates a decline of natural stocks of these species. Present paper tries to show the main aspects of sturgeons fished in Romanian sector of Danube River, to discuss some relevant aspects that could help people to understand the real issues on this topic better and eventually find the best way to stop the decreasing tendency of wild population of three very interesting species of sturgeons: beluga (Huso huso Linnaeus, 1758), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedti Brand, 1833) and stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus, Brandt, 1833).

Observations on the skulls of sturgeons (Acipenseridae): shared similarities of Pseudoscaphirhynchus kaufmanni and juvenile specimens of Acipenser stellatus

A novel hypothesis uniting Acipenser stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus as sister groups has recently been proposed based on analysis of DNA sequences. In this paper I compare specimens of A. stellatus and P. kaufmanni, and show that they share several putatively derived similarities in the structure of their skulls, including: the presence of large spines on the dermal bones of skull; lateral extrascapular bones that enclose the confluence of the posttemporal, supratemporal, and otic sensory canals; elongate dorsal rostral bones; border rostral bones distinct in shape from dorsal rostral bones; greatly enlarged jugal that lacks a median flange; rostral canal bones that loop posteriorly at the anterior commissure of the rostral sensory canals; and the presence of an elongate, flat, and broad posterior ventral rostral bone. These similarities support a close relationship between A. stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus, but still remain to be critically tested.

Concentrations of trace elements in muscle of sturgeons in the Caspian Sea

Concentrations of 21 trace elements were determined in muscle of beluga ( Huso huso), Persian sturgeon ( Acipenser persicus), Russian sturgeon ( Acipenser gueldenstaedtii), ship sturgeon ( Acipenser nudiventris) and stellate sturgeon ( Acipenser stellatus) collected from coastal regions of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, surrounding the Caspian Sea during 2000–2001. Concentrations of Mn, Co, Cu, Mo, Sn, Hg, Pb and Bi in the muscle were apparently different among the five species of sturgeons. Especially, beluga showed the highest concentrations of Hg, Pb and Mn in all the five species. In addition, more than half of the individuals of beluga exceeded the guideline level (0.3 μg/g wet wt.) of Hg for food in UK. However, V, Cr, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr and Ba concentrations were similar among five sturgeons. Growth-dependent increase in Hg in beluga, Cu in Persian sturgeon, and Zn in Russian sturgeon were observed, whereas V, Mn, Co, Cu, Ga, Sr, Mo, Sn, Hg and Bi concentrations in Persian sturgeon, Pb in ship sturgeon, and Cr, Mn, and Rb in stellate sturgeon were negatively correlated with body length. All species of sturgeon in Azerbaijan showed the highest concentration of Sr and the lowest concentration of Rb, while the five sturgeons from Iran showed opposite trends. Concentration of V, which is present in oil, in sturgeons in the Caspian Sea was considerably lower than that of fish from Kuwait, but was comparable to that of Cambodia and the Gulf and Gulf of Oman. To our knowledge, this study provides the first extensive data on multielemental accumulation in sturgeons of the Caspian Sea.

State of skeletal muscles in larvae of sturgeons of the Volga Basin in artificial reproduction.

The deterioration of toxicological situation in the water area of the Volga‐Caspian region in the past years has a detrimental effect on ichthyofauna, especially on the state of populations of sturgeons, a characteristic feature of which is a long lifespan. As a result, natural reproduction of sturgeons already cannot maintain the abundance of species at normal level. For this reason, obtaining viable qualitative material in artificial reproduction of sturgeons in fisheries is a topical problem. In the past decade, larvae of sturgeons (Russian sturgeon, stellate sturgeon, and beluga) grown in fisheries of the Volga basin, had a broad spectrum of abnormalities in the development of different organs and tissues [3, 6, 11]. One of the most frequent abnormalities in larvae of sturgeons at the stage of hatching and beginning of active foraging are changes in the structure of their myotomes. The appearance test of fixed larvae with a binocular shows that many myotomes of the body contain cavities, in which muscle fibers are absent. In 1988 these abnormalities were observed only in single larvae at the stage of hatching; however, staring from 1995, the lesions of skeletal muscles have become mass-scale in larvae of all species of sturgeons at all developmental stages studied. Serum levels of testosterone, 11‐ketotestosterone and oestradiol‐17β in three species of sturgeon during gonadal development and final maturation induced by hormonal treatment

Changes in serum concentrations of two androgens, testosterone (T) and 11‐ketotestosterone (11KT), and oestradiol‐17β(E2) in male and female giant sturgeon Huso huso, Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii and stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus were studied at different stages of gonadal maturity and after final maturation induced by hormonal treatment. Both male and female fish displayed a distinct increase in serum steroid concentrations during gonadal development. 11KT levels were significantly higher in males than females, with a positive correlation detected between 11KT and T concentrations. In maturing males and females, higher values of both 11KT and T were observed in stellate sturgeon compared to giant and Russian sturgeons. Vitellogenesis and high E2 levels were correlated in maturing sturgeon females.

Morphometric recognition of two morphs in sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) population induced by different reproductive behaviour

Four species of sturgeons appear in the Yugoslav part of the Danube River. Among them three are anadromous, beluga (Huso huso), Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) and stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) and migrate to Danube from the Black Sea to spawn. Only sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is exclusively freshwater. There are obvious differences between vernal and winter races of anadromous sturgeons, due to their different migratory patterns. Russian ichthyologist Berg (1934) claimed that there are two races (morphs) in the starlet population as well. This stimulated long discussion in Russian and Yugoslav literature, and it was the starting point for our research on sterlet in the Yugoslav part of the Danube River.Morphometric analysis was preformed on 159 individuals caught in Danube River among 1123 and 1173 km, on four localities during September and October 2002. Analysis included 24 morphological and 3 meristic characters. K‐means cluster analysis indicated existence of two different clusters (groups), one with 95 (59·75%) and other with 64 (40·25%) samples. Significant differences were found for preorbital, preoral and prebarbel length. Mean values (in % of head length) for first group were 50·13 ± 1·71, 57·61 ± 1·87, 39·74 ± 2·20 and for second group 53·50 ± 2·46, 62·07 ± 2·20 and 43·30 ± 2·08 respectively. Findings were confirmed by Principal Components & Classification Analysis. These results speak in favour of existence of two morphs in sterlet population, one with long and pointed rostrum (vernal) and other with short rostrum (winter). According to the literature that is probably influenced by different reproductive behaviour (time separation in spawning).

Parasites of stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) from south-west of Caspian Sea

Sturgeons are the most important fishes of Caspian Sea, but there are few reports about the pathogens of them in southern part of the Sea. in this survey, it has been attempted to indicate the parasite communities of Acipenser steflatus and their prevalence as well as their effects on the fish growth. In this survey 234 A. steflatus were caught from three different geographical locations including fisheries sections I. ii and a hatchery adjucent to Sephid Rud River (ill) in south -west of Caspian Sea (Guilan Province. iran).Common parasitology procedures were used for necropsy of the fish and recovery of parasites. The parasites were fixed in Buffererd Formalin (10%) and ethyl alcohol (70%), stained by Acetocarmine and then identified. Standard statistical computations (mean, Standard Deviation, range, prevalence and dominance) were calculated for the overall samples and for samples grouped by geographical location. The differences between groups defined by Z test and One Way Anova test (p<0.05). Nine different parasite species wererecovered from internal organs of the fishincluding Skrjabinopsoius semiarmatus (preva|ence= p = 43.15%). Leptorhynchoides plagicephaius (p = 20.18%). Cuculianus sphaerocephaius (,0:17.26%}, Eubothrium acipenserfnum (p=9.14%), Bothrimonus faflax (p = 4.47%), Eustrongylides excisus (larvae), Anisakis sp. (larvae), Amphilina foiiacea and Corynosoma strumosum. The prevalence and intensity of parasites in fisheries section of ii and III were more than section I. A direct relation was found between some parasites(especially 8 .semr'armatus) and size. The prevalence and intensity of some parasites in females were more than males and also it was found that there is a correlation between some parasites (especially 3. semiamiatus) and season. in this survey, again it was found that the internal parasites of A. steliatus in this area (south ~ west) are the same as northern part of Caspian Sea but the diversity of parasites was less than north. Furthermore, the diversity of parasites has been decreased in a period of time (compared with the first survey), though the prevalence and intensity of some (marine) parasites appears to be increased during this period. HACCP in Iranian Caviar

There are twenty four existing sturgeon species world wide. Five of them live in the Caspian Sea and supply caviar: Huso huso, Acipenser guelden staedtii, Acipenser persicus, Acipenser nudiventris, and Acipenser stellatus. Caviar production has many processing steps. In the first the landed fish are numbered and washed several times, then gutted to remove roes and resultant roes are washed and strained through screens in order to remove any connective tissues. The next step of processing caviar is salting. The type of salt used depends on the customer's preference and the customs regulations of the purchasing country. Then caviar is filled in containers andthe lid is placed on it with utmost caution to compact the mass and remove the containair inside the container. At the end, a simple rubber band is pulled over the lid at the point contacting with the container. It should be noted that the liquid that seeps out of the container during storage is an indication of caviar's freshness. Iranian caviar has used HACCP for many years. In this article caviar HACCP will be described.

Meiotic gynogenesis in the stellate, Russian sturgeon and sterlet

Diploid gynogenetic progenies were obtained in the stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus, Russian sturgeon A. gueldenstaedtii, and sterlet A. ruthenus by means of insemination of the eggs with UV-irradiated spermatozoa and suppression of the second meiotic division by heat shock. The gynogenetic nature of experimental fish was confirmed by RAPD-PCR analysis of DNA. Effective photoreactivation of UV-induced lesions of spermatozoa was shown in the case of illumination of the fertilized eggs with visible light. This phenomenon should be taken into account when determining the doses of irradiation that allow inactivation of the male chromosomes and incubating gynogenetic embryos. Gynogenetic stellate and Russian sturgeons are viable and can be reared in order to study the mechanism of sex determination in sturgeons.

Effects of cycloheximide, aminoglutethimide, indomethacin, cytochalasin B and colchicine on ovulation and the ultrastructure of the ovarian follicle wall in the stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus Pall

The inhibitor of protein synthesis cycloheximide, inhibitor of steroidogenesis aminoglutethimide, and inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis indomethacin, as well as the drugs affecting the cell cytoskeleton, such as cytochalasin B and colchicine, were used for studying the mechanisms of ovulation in the stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus Pall. Follicles were isolated from the body cavity within certain time intervals after the injection of pituitary suspension to a female and cultivated in media with the inhibitors. In the case of follicles isolated in the middle of the period from hormonal injection until ovulation, cycloheximide, cytochalasin B, and aminoglutethimide suppressed ovulation most effectively, while in the case of oocytes isolated during the last quarter of this period, aminoglutethimide and cytochalasin B were the most effective. It was shown using TEM and SEM that cycloheximide suppressed all processes related to the preparation for ovulation, except the initial ones: contraction of follicle cells and their processes and secondary flattening of these cells. In the presence of aminoglutethimide, the follicle cells underwent pathological changes. Incubation in the media containing indomethacin and colchicine prevented degradation of the outer theca layer at the follicle apex. In the presence of cytochalasin B affecting the cytoskeleton, the drawing of follicle cell processes from the jelly coat channels was blocked, the outer theca cells were strongly contracted, but the cell layer integrity was affected and it was divided in separate fragments. A relationship is discussed between the metabolic processes and morphological changes that lead to ovulation. It was proposed on the basis of the present and previous data that the preovulatory preparation of the follicle tissues comprises two contractile and two apoptotic processes distinctly coordinated in time and space.
