EFFECTS OF NUCLEIC ACID PRECURSORS ON LIVER INJURIES

AICA and AICA orotate were given in massive doses together with 20% casein diet to rats with liver injuries induced by a low protein, amino acid imbalanced diet, and the effects of both agents appraised.AICA orotate was apparently of value in recovering iodine numbers of fatty acids in liver lipids, increasing Palade granules and inhibiting fibrosis. Given in optimum doses, both agents may exhibit further effects.AICA was effective in repairing cell necrosis but had rather an inhibitive effect on the recovery of fibrosis.It is advisable not to use AICA alone to prevent metabolic unbalance of nucleic acids.

Effect of Dietary Linoleate on Chick Liver Fatty Acids: Dietary Linoleate Requirement

Studies were conducted with chicks to determine changes in polyunsaturated fatty acids in liver lipids when the chicks were fed increasing amounts of dietary linoleate, and from this data the dietary requirement of the chick for linoleate was estimated. Increasing dietary amounts of linoleic acid fed to chicks as supplements of corn oil in a diet low in essential fatty acids (EFA) resulted in increased amounts of linoleate and arachidonate (18:2ω6 and 20:4ω6) and decreased amounts of eicosatrienoate (20:3ω9) in liver lipids, a characteristic of EFA deficiency. The ratio of trienoate to tetraenoate was plotted to estimate the requirement of the chick for linoleate, which was found to be 2.0% of dietary calories. The requirement estimated from the rate constant equation by computer methods was found to be the same. Equations were derived to allow an estimate of the dietary linoleate intake, based on fatty acid composition of the liver lipid.

Effect of type of oil and site of administration on the fate of fatty acids in sheep

AbstractSafflower oil (S) and methyl myristate (M) were administered in the rumen (R) and abomasum (A) of sheep for 28 days. The digestibility of nitrogen and fiber were not affected by treatment. A larger proportion of fatty acids were digested with SA than with SR while the reverse was found with MR and MA. These differences were reflected in the fecal fatty acid composition. Regardless of treatment, the free fatty acid constituted approximately 75% of the fecal fat. MR and to a lesser extent SR increased the molar % of rumen propionate with a corresponding decrease in acetate. Fatty acid composition of rumen bacteria reflected the composition of the administrated oils. SR resulted in increased stearic and decreased linoleic acids in liver lipids while the adipose tissue remained constant. SA increased linoleic in both tissues. Markedly larger increases in myristic acid were found in adipose and liver lipids with MR compared to MA. Large increases in myristic acid in tissues were associated with decreased linoleic acid.
