The challenges and solutions of technology integration in rural schools: A systematic literature review

The digital divide between urban and rural schools challenges efforts to promote technology integration in education, and contributes to growing educational inequity in many contexts. Using the most current version of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA 2020), we identified and extracted 36 articles and conference papers on the use of technology in rural schools from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. We used Critical Interpretive Synthesis to identify the challenges and solutions involved in integrating technology in rural schools. The analysis revealed 29 challenges, which were categorized using the framework of the ecological perspective into macro level, meso level, and micro level challenges. The analysis also identified solutions to the challenges discussed in these studies. By focusing on the challenges and proposed solutions at different contextual levels, this review is intended to identify what constitutes good practices when integrating technology in rural schools. Future research should focus on factors which facilitate the use of technology and how the integration of technology impacts students’ learning experiences and achievement in rural schools.

Teachers’ Utilization of Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy in Examination in Public Secondary Schools in Nandi County, Kenya

Stakeholders are generally concerned in how public secondary schools perform academically in contrast to private schools. The optimal application of Bloom’s Taxonomy should foster increased performance. Thus, the purpose of the study was to ascertain how students’ academic achievement in public secondary schools in Nandi County, Kenya, related to teachers’ application of Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy in teaching and examination. The study’s goal was to find out how instructors used Bloom’s Taxonomy when creating internal exams. A pragmatic paradigm was used in the investigation. The foundation of this study was Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy. This study used an explanatory sequential design in conjunction with a mixed method research technique. The research population consisted of 2055 teachers from 137 public secondary schools. The sample size was 360 teachers from 30 county schools. 30 county schools were selected using simple random sampling, from which 12 Form 3 teachers teaching 6 selected subjects were identified. Questionnaires and document analysis were used to collect data from examination. Data was analyzed using frequencies, and means. The results showed that 86 % of the teachers utilized Bloom’s Taxonomy when setting exams. The overall percentages for using Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy in examination papers were as follows: remembering 29.4%, understanding 28.5%, applying 14.5%, analyzing 9.9%, evaluating 8.7%, and creating 8.8%. The study therefore concluded that, most teachers used Bloom’s Taxonomy when developing internal tests, and recommended that all teachers should utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy and maximize all the levels of it in exams so as to promote an insightful approach to learning and critical thinking experience that will enhance academic performance for the students.

Establishment and development of rehabilitation medicine in Russia: the role of the Russian Academy of Sciences

An analysis of the results of studying physical therapy methods obtained for 300 years of existence of the Russian Academy of Sciences is presented. The first hundred years brought together attempts of physical therapy methods' experiential studiyng, which led to the formation of physiotherapy in the late 19th century. The synthesis of empirical knowledge allowed to form unifying theories of restorative and rehabilitation medicine in the 20th century. The members of the academy have priority in identifying basic laws, effective technologies, and in creating domestic scientific schools and institutions. The article considers the main achievements of scientific schools, relevant directions of scientific studies' development. Restorative medicine of the 21st century is built on basic achievements in the research of molecular, cellular and integral mechanisms of physical factors' therapeutic action, determination of the «targets» of their application in the body. The results of the assessment of physical factors' targeted action will allow to significantly increase the effectiveness of their therapeutic and preventive action on the body.

Junior Secondary School Administrative Management and Achievement of Competence Based Curriculum Core Competencies in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya

The study investigated influence of junior secondary school administrative management on achievement of competence-based curriculum (CBC) core competencies in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. Junior secondary schools (JSS) in Kenya are all domiciled in primary schools. The existing primary schools and junior secondary schools form comprehensive schools comprising: Early childhood education and development (ECDE), primary schools and junior secondary schools all under the same administrative management. The ministry of education Kenya emphasizes development of practical skills, knowledge and core competences in learners’ reallife situation in all comprehensive schools. However, junior secondary school administrative management is insufficiently implemented; rising concern on acquisition of core competences by JSS learners in Kenyan comprehensive schools. The objective of the study was to determine influence of junior secondary school administrative management on learners’ achievement of CBC core competencies in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. It involved 367 respondents selected from 8000 study population using purposive and simple random techniques. The study employed descriptive design. The study respondents were: Junior secondary school teachers, comprehensive school head teachers and junior secondary school learners. The research tools utilized were questionnaires for junior secondary school teachers, comprehensive school head teachers and junior secondary school learners. Inferential data was analyzed using Pearson Chi-square test. The study established that junior secondary school administrative management had statistical significant influence on learners’ achievement of competence-based curriculum core competencies in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. Following study findings, the researcher concluded that junior secondary school administrative management is a valuable element in learners’ achievement of competence-based curriculum core competencies in Kenya. Therefore, the researcher recommended that ministry of education should promote effective junior secondary school administrative management for proper learners’ achievement of competence-based curriculum core competencies in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya.

Teachers’ Challenging Experiences in Home Visitation During the New Normal Education: A Phenomenological Study

Home visits are intended to decrease the reading gap, improve parenting skills, foster parent-child contact and involvement, boost students' school preparedness and achievement, and advance literacy. The home visitation program was the only option for the teachers to validate their learners' academic performance during the Modular Distance Learning in the new normal education. This study explored the challenges that public elementary school teachers encountered in home visitation during the new normal education in Jimenez District, Division of Misamis Occidental. A phenomenological approach was utilized as a research design, with nine public elementary school teachers as participants in the study. They were selected through purposive sampling. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to gather the data from the participants. The responses were analyzed using Moustakas’ method of data analysis. Results generated the following themes: threats to one’s security and safety, inadequacies of interpersonal connections among teachers, parents, and learners, conflict of other school-related activities and teachers’ coping strategies. The study showed that teachers experienced different challenges in home visitation during the new normal education. When teachers leave the confines of the school campus to provide services in locations other than where they are employed, they expose themselves to a significant risk and face potential threats to their safety and security. When students and their parents are absent during a home visit, it can be difficult for teachers to administer assessments or validate student work. Teachers also find that overlapping school activities and home visitation make for an exhausting experience. However, the study showed that despite the challenges the teachers have encountered, they remain diligent and responsive to the needs of their learners. Teachers' coping strategies have assisted them in remaining optimistic and flexible in facing different challenges. The buddy system, total health, and time management among teachers are recommended in this study.

A Bayesian network-based study of the correlation between students’ study habits and foreign language performance

Abstract Exploring the relationship between students’ study habits and foreign language performance is of great significance to the field of education, this paper investigates the correlation between students’ study habits and foreign language performance, and uses Bayesian networks to construct a labeled correlation model of study habits and their effects on foreign language performance. A multi-labeled Bayesian network model was built to assess the impact of different study habits on foreign language achievement by collecting and analyzing data on study habits and foreign language achievement of 110 college and university students. In this study, there was a significant positive correlation between the characteristics of learning behaviors in class (e.g., pre-study and review) and foreign language achievement, with correlation coefficients of 0.366 and 0.411, respectively, while the association between the characteristics of life behaviors (e.g., sleep and diet) and foreign language achievement was relatively weak. The study also showed a high positive correlation (0.283) between positive attitudes towards school and foreign language achievement. Through Bayesian network analysis, this paper further confirms the importance of good study habits in improving academic performance in foreign languages. By optimizing students’ study habits and extracurricular learning behaviors, the study can effectively enhance foreign language learning outcomes.

Evaluation of school achievements in adolescents with primary hypertension.

Primary hypertension (HT) is a global public health problem with increasing prevalence in recent years. HT may have caused decreased neurocognitive functions and learning difficulties. In this study, clinical characteristics of adolescents with primary HT were examined and the relationship between semester grade point average (GPA) and HT was evaluated. This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted on adolescents with primary HT attending high school. Patient records (number of hospital visits, HT-related complaints, blood pressure measurements, and laboratory tests) were evaluated retrospectively. End-of-semester report card grades of Mathematics, Turkish Language and Literature and English courses were noted, and compared with the clinical characteristics of the patients. The study included 83 patients with a mean age of 15.6±1.2 years. Patients with higher body mass index had lower grades in Mathematics (p=0.007) and Turkish Language and Literature (p=0.004). Patients with HT-related symptoms such as headache, epistaxis and palpitations had lower GPAs for all courses. Also, patients with hyperuricemia or proteinuria had lower semester GPAs compared to patients with normal serum uric acid levels or without proteinuria (p<0.05). GPAs for Mathematics (p=0.000) and Turkish Language and Literature (p=0.006) decrease as the number of hospital visits increases. HT may cause not only cardiovascular complications but also decreased neurocognitive functions through various mechanisms and may have a negative impact on academic skills. Therefore, HT should be followed up with a multidisciplinary approach and intensive efforts should be made to approach the goal of normotension.

Secondary school students' dropout risk: A study of mixed methods

The aim of this study is to determine the dropout risk levels of secondary school students and to contribute to the literature by making suggestions to researchers according to the results obtained. For this reason, the research was carried out using the mixed method. For this purpose, the School Dropout Risk Scale was prepared by quantitative methods, and the sample was determined by simple random sampling method. In the qualitative method, a semi-structured interview form was prepared and the sample was determined with maximum diversity sampling. In quantitative data analysis; gender, class repetition, absenteeism status, t-test for the student's work status variable and Anova were used for the school achievement variable. According to the results of the research, it has been determined that the risk levels of secondary school students leaving school are at an intermediate level across the scale and in the lower dimensions of the scale. It was found that all the variables included in the study caused a change in the risk of dropping out of school. According to the students' opinions, peer bullying, low socioeconomic status of the family, lack of interest in school, family pressure for the student to drop out of school, the administration giving unfounded punishments to students, insufficient school resources lead to reasons for dropping out.

Enhancing Elementary Literacy Skills through a Contextualized Coastal Course Book: A Developmental Study in Bengkulu, Indonesia

Teaching materials designed using local contexts are important in improving students' literacy skills. The lack of teaching materials to support these skills causes low student literacy achievements in elementary schools. This study aims to design a course book, grounded in the coastal context of Bengkulu, to enhance the literacy skills of elementary school students. The research employs a developmental approach using the ADDIE model, which encompasses five stages: (1) analysis, (2) design, (3) development, (4) implementation, and (5) evaluation. The subjects of the study are fifth-grade students from elementary schools in Bengkulu City. The study is conducted in three phases: expert trials, limited trials, and wide-scale trials. Data is collected through both tests and non-tests. The instruments used for data collection include product validity sheets, practicality questionnaires, and literacy test instruments. Descriptive statistical analysis is utilized for data analysis. The result of the research suggests that the course book, based on the Bengkulu coastal context, meets the criteria for validity, and practicality, and effectively enhances the literacy skills of elementary school students. Teaching materials that integrate with coastal contexts have been proven to support students' thinking skills, one of which is mathematical literacy.

Secondary School Learners' Self-Efficacy and Achievement in Non-Routine Mathematics Problem-Solving

This paper uses a correlational research design to investigate the predictive power of the sources of self-efficacy and non-routine problem-solving achievement. It collected the data from a sample of 118 high-achieving secondary school learners in the Gauteng province, South Africa, using questionnaires, a problem-solving test, and interviews. Their self-efficacy beliefs were categorized into mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and physiological state. The findings revealed that the physiological state, vicarious experience, and mastery experience self-efficacy beliefs had a positive impact on problem-solving achievement, whilst that of social persuasion was negative. The magnitudes of the impact of the physiological state and social persuasion sources of self-efficacy were relatively greater than the others. Each source of self-efficacy was discovered to have an insignificant weak positive linear relationship with problem-solving achievement.

Designing a digital escape room game: An experience of a digital learning tool in basic education

The study aims to explore the perspectives of primary school teacher candidates who attend Turkish Language Teaching courses on their experiences of developing digital educational escape room games (DEERGs). Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was utilized. The study group comprised 48 primary school teacher candidates who were reached by the convenience sampling method. A semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher and DEERGs designed by the participants were used as data collection tools. In the 14-week study, interviews were conducted via Microsoft Teams. The findings were analysed from a holistic perspective using content analysis. Results indicated that the participants preferred Google Forms and Genially tools in game design, and they benefited from Web 2.0 tools. In first language education, games for reading and writing skills were designed, and mostly primary school and 4th-grade achievements were selected. It was observed that they considered areas of interest, individual differences, and constructs that support cognitive-emotional and skill development in scripting. It was emphasized that DEERGs contribute to attention, focus, maintaining and motivating learning, problem-solving, developing a positive attitude towards the lesson, and learning while having fun.

Quality Management of Frontier, Outermost and Disadvantaged Schools in Improving Achievement In Junior Secondary Schools

This study aims to analyze the quality management of frontier, outermost and disadvantaged schools in improving school achievement, the focus of research on planning, implementation, organization, and evaluation. This research was conducted at SMPN 7 Dusun Selatan and SMPN Satu Atap 1 Dusun Selatan, South Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan. The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques of observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study revealed that (1) Planning for the Implementation of Quality Standards in Schools has been carried out with an understanding and method in accordance with quality management standards and planned; 2) Implementation of the implementation of quality standards in schools has been carried out with guidance, strategies, time and place, measured in accordance with quality management standards; 3) Organizing the implementation of quality standards in schools is carried out with management procedures and structured according to the field of education units; 4) Evaluation of the implementation of quality standards in schools is carried out consistently. This research has implications for improving the quality of education, especially in disadvantaged areas.

Assessment of the Quality of Education and Care in Selected Polish Preschools During the COVID-19 Pandemic Using the ECERS-E Scale

Objectives of the research: The aim of this project was to investigate the quality of education in Polish preschools during the COVID-19 pandemic in different social environments.&#x0D; Research methods: The study uses a pedagogical approach and the ECERS-E scale, used to both define and assess the quality of preschool institutions. The research also involved interviews with teachers.&#x0D; A short description of the context of the issue: An important goal of the research is to identify problem areas and areas that constitute resources or strengths of preschool institutions.&#x0D; Research findings: A detailed data analysis indicated differences in the quality of education and care offered to children. The preschools under study obtained the highest results for the mathematics subscale and the lowest for the diversity subscale. Importantly, in nearly 25% of them, the quality of science and environment classes was lower than the minimum. A comparative analysis of the locations of preschools revealed that rural institutions achieved lower results than urban institutions, both in the overall quality of everyday life and for all subscales. Despite the social changes taking place in Poland, research shows that the diversification of the educational environment may significantly determine school competences and achievements.&#x0D; Conclusions and recommendations: The added value of the project is showing the potential of the ECERS scale and proving that it can be used in the Polish context. This creates an opportunity to conduct comparative research on an international scale.

Principal leadership is a very important skill for principals who want to be successful through regular learning and training, such as using technology, books, or other means. This research aims to determine the role of school principal leadership in realizing independent learning. Apart from that, to find out the principal's leadership towards the success of educational goals and to observe the principal's leadership in creating independent learning. The results of the study show that; The school principal as a leader determines the direction of policy and the achievement of educational goals in the school, and the leadership of the school principal has an important role and position in the school's achievement, namely realizing freedom of learning. Freedom to learn is a program initiated by Nadiem Makarim, Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, to produce superior people with a Pancasila student profile. The goal is to create students who are faithful and devout, independent, critical, creative, cooperative.

Increasing Public Interest through School Image Branding through a Trending Approach

This research focuses on analyzing various branding strategies that are popular or trending in the context of education and how their application can affect the image of schools in the eyes of the community. This study aims to describe the school's branding strategy to increase public interest. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research using literature studies. The data obtained are carefully recorded and detailed (data reduction). Then, the data is collected qualitatively by tabulation (display data). Data analysis techniques are carried out with an in-depth analysis of the core points, namely the school branding strategy then concluded. The results of the study show that school branding strategies that can increase public interest include: 1) improving quality management of both school accreditation and ISO quality management; 2) improving the quality of learning output and learning outcomes, such as improving the achievements of students, teachers, schools and alumni; 3) create catchy jargon, 'tagline' or slogans which are then realized with school programs; 4) develop superior programs that are the hallmark of the school; 5) organizing programs to support the school's vision and mission.

Moving opportunities: The impact of mixed-income public housing regenerations on student achievement

I use mixed-income public housing regenerations in London as a natural experiment to identify how schools affect low-income students’ educational achievement when affluent households flow into their neighborhood. I compare student achievement in schools in the same neighborhood located at different distances from a regeneration before and after its completion. I employ a grandfathering instrument for enrollment in treated schools to address potential endogenous mobility. Students exposed to regenerations have higher test scores at the end of primary school. I estimate that schools explain 65–81% of the overall achievement effects, which are mediated by changes in the student body’s composition.

Information Resources of Ukrainian Terminography: Kharkiv Terminological

The relevance of the research. The study of terminological processes that take place at a certain stage of the development of society is of permanent scientific importance both in the linguistic aspect and in any other aspect of the development of technology or culture. The issue of national term creation and term usage in priority positions is conditioned by the processes of consolidation of the scientific community’s forces to consider science, technology, and culture as an integral national phenomenon.&#x0D; The purpose of the research is to study the role of the Kharkiv scientific community in the development of Ukrainian terminology during 1940–2020.&#x0D; The methodology. The statistical method and the method of generalization provide empirical material regarding the facts of the publication of terminological dictionaries in Kharkiv. The use of analytical-synthetic, logical, comparative methods allows to describe the results of the research, to establish the role of the Kharkiv scientific community in the formation, normalization and codification of the modern Ukrainian scientific language. The visualization method allows to graphically present the results of the analysis of terminographic activity.&#x0D; The results. The terminographic activity of scientific and educational institutions operating in Kharkiv unfolds in line with the nationwide processes of formation of terminological lexicography. The sectoral spectrum of terminographic works testifies to the breadth of scientific and technical, socio-economic, educational, and cultural priorities of Kharkiv region. Ukrainian terminology is represented by a wide variety of lexicographic works. Kharkiv institutions of higher education are the leading centers of terminographic work.&#x0D; The scientific novelty. Modern terminology requires studying of the achievements of the leading scientific centers of Ukraine. The study of the state of publishing activity lies in the context of evaluating the general processes of formation of scientific schools in Ukrainian terminology. Scientific and educational institutions, professional centers, creative teams, Kharkiv scientists made a significant contribution to the development of the national terminological school. The modern level of normalization and codification of special vocabulary is formed by the consolidated efforts of all scientific centers of Ukraine.&#x0D; The practical significance. The research popularizes the terminographic achievements of Kharkiv scientific schools, introduces into scientific circulation a set of dictionaries and encyclopedias describing modern scientific language.&#x0D; The conclusion. The study of the temporality of terminographic processes, the sectoral composition of terminographic works testifies to the formation of powerful scientific schools in the city universities, the innovative positions of scientific teams, the interest of university management, as well as the civic attitude, professionalism, language training, and enthusiasm of the authors.

EVALUATING THE MODERATING EFFECT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTAL ENGAGEMENT IN TRANSITION TO SCHOOL AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCE

The objective of the current study is to determine how parental involvement in the transition to school affects students’ academic achievement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The goal was to investigate the diminishing character of socioeconomic position in the link between academic success and the start of school. For this study, a survey research approach was chosen. The 140 kindergarteners and their 140 parents made up the study's sample utilizing a random sampling procedure. Both the MCQ-based exam and the parental involvement questionnaires were employed, and their reliability was later validated. Data analysis was done after the data-gathering process. Parents with higher SES levels significantly influence their children achievement in school as compared to the parents with low SES. Following that, it was suggested that the government take the lead in offering stipends to students with low financial support for their studies. This action may provide kids with the tools they need for a smooth transition. The availability of resources and pupils' academic success are related. This action could boost students' performance in school.
