Peningkatan Kompetensi Guru Bahasa Inggris dalam Penulisan Artikel pada Open Journal System (OJS)

Teacher training activities in writing article and publication on the Open Journal System are strategic to be carried out. This is expected to have an impact on increasing the ability of teachers in writing scientific papers and also publications. In addition, it is hoped that through the writing culture, an academic climate will be developed among teachers. The implementation of training articles and publications in journals for Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) Kota Sorong group is expected to be a solution to the lack of teacher publications. In addition, participants who will take part in this training will share the knowledge gained with their fellow teachers at their home school. The results of this Community Service activity show an increase in the ability of teachers from the average pre-test score of 59 and post-test 89. The conclusion from this activity is that the training carried out has succeeded in increasing the competence of English teachers in Article Writing and Publication in the Open Journal System (OJS).

"There are no worthy life opportunities from ahuman, professional or scientific viewpoint": expelled neurologists outside the centers of German-speaking neuroscience

The persecution and expulsion of German-speaking neurologists were not limited to research centers, such as Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg. The exclusion from science, teaching and clinical care also occurred at other (university) sites. The different aspects and implementation of the exclusion are presented here exemplified by 10 physicians involved in neuroscience. These ranged from forced internal emigration (Georg Stertz/Kiel), racially motivated removal from office (Max Isserlin and Karl Neubürger/both Munich, Ernst Grünthal/Würzburg, Gabriel Steiner/Heidelberg, Rudolf Altschul and Francis Schiller/both Prague) to publicly staged denunciation and humiliation (Otto Löwenstein/Bonn). Furthermore, without being directly persecuted themselves, individual physicians reacted to the poisoned political and academic climate in that they either sooner or later left their homeland (Eduard Heinrich Krapf/Cologne, Hartwig Kuhlenbeck/Jena). The results and conclusions summarized in this article for university clinics and institutes represent only a narrow section of the neurological scene in 1933-1939; however, they emphasize how necessary an expansion of the historical research perspective is on the fate of neurologists at communal hospitals, in field practices and other professional areas.

Reinventing talent management: How to maximize performance in higher education

Talent management is considered a new organizational priority in managing people that both academicians and practitioners discuss. The purpose of this research was to examine the role of talent management (TM), knowledge management (KM), university transformation (UT), and academic climate (AC) in increasing the performance of private higher education institutions (PHEIs). This research applied a quantitative approach by collecting data from 382 lecturers who worked at various private universities in Indonesia. Online questionnaires were used to collect the data using a stratified random sampling method. Then these data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Square. The findings indicated that systematic application of talent management and knowledge management, university transformation, and academic climate in PHEIs improves organizational performance. Developing a plan to transform their talent and the business process is the key to emphasizing its importance in shaping the character and quality of PHEIs. The practical implication, PHEIs must offer a conducive academic climate for talented lecturers. The study offers a value-add to the resource-based view theory, managing talent and knowledge as essential resources for organizational transformation to maximize organizational performance.

Peningkatan Kualitas Guru SMK Kabupaten Nganjuk Melalui Pelatihan Penulisan Karya Ilmiah

Abstract
 Teachers' writing skills are needed to support the demands of professionalism, especially related to career development and scientific needs. The lack of scientific work produced by teachers such as articles, books and modules is a challenge that is a challenge in the world of education. Because many opportunities support the development of writing skills: the service team organizes scientific article writing training activities for teachers of creative products and entrepreneurship subjects to improve motivation and scientific writing skills. (1) The entrepreneurship teacher has a field practicum program that can be used as writing material. (2) In developing innovative products, teachers and students make a lot of observations that can be downstream into scientific works. (3) The academic climate where teachers constantly interact with the world of science. The training implementation uses a hybrid offline and online learning system. The training materials were delivered using lecture, discussion, case studies and direct simulation methods. The results of the comparison of the participants' pretest and posttest showed that there was an increase in participants' understanding and skills in writing scientific papers. The results of the evaluation of the training implementation activities also showed that the participants were delighted with the services provided by the community service team. The results of this scientific work will undoubtedly support teachers' professional careers, namely promotion and class.

The Patient is Thriving! Current Issues, Recent Advances, and Future Directions in Creativity Assessment

ABSTRACT In 1998, Plucker and Runco provided an overview of creativity assessment, noting current issues (fluency confounds, generality vs. specificity), recent advances (predictive validity, implicit theories), and promising future directions (moving beyond divergent thinking measures, reliance on batteries of assessments, translation into practice). In the ensuing quarter century, the field experienced large growth in the quantity, breadth, and depth of assessment work, suggesting another analysis is timely. The purpose of this paper is to review the 1998 analysis and identify current issues, advances, and future directions for creativity measurement. Recent advances include growth in assessment quantity and quality and use of semantic distance as a scoring technique. Current issues include mismatches between current conceptions of creativity and those on which many measures are based, the need for psychometric quality standards, and a paucity of predictive validity evidence. The paper concludes with analysis of likely future directions, including use of machine learning to administer and score assessments and refinement of our conceptual frameworks for creativity assessment. Although the 1998 paper was written within an academic climate of harsh criticism of creativity measurement, the current climate is more positive, with reason for optimism about the continued growth of this important aspect of the field.

The Influence of Personal Motivation and Innovative Climate on Innovative Behavior: Evidence from University Students in China.

PurposeDrawing on the motivation theory, this study investigated the effect and consequences of personal motivation and innovative climate on innovative behavior among university students in mainland China. The study also examined whether the effect of personal motivation and innovative climate on Chinese university students’ innovative behavior is heterogeneous between disciplines and place of residence.MethodsA quantitative study was conducted to test the hypotheses. Data were collected from 245 undergraduate students at Chinese universities with paper-based questionnaires. Self-report scales were used to measure levels of personal motivation, innovative climate, and innovative behaviors. A confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the scale and questionnaire’s reliability and validity. The logistic model was applied to analyze the data and test the hypotheses.ResultsPersonal motivation and innovative climate have significant effects on Chinese university students’ innovative behavior. The effect of personal motivation and innovative climate on students’ innovative behavior is heterogeneous between disciplines and place of residence. Further, extrinsic motivation serves as a positive incentive. Mentor support, good academic climate, and knowledge sharing affect students’ innovative behavior positively. However, insufficient guaranteed resources has a significant negative influence. The data demonstrated no statistically significant difference between intrinsic motivation and students’ innovative behavior.ConclusionThis study contributes to the empirical literature on mechanisms that influence innovative behavior by testing the relation between personal motivation, innovative climate, and innovative behavior on the part of Chinese university students. In addition, these findings also provide evidence for ways to improve university students’ innovative consciousness and innovative ability, as well as universities’ management practice of innovative education.

FUNGSIONALISASI HUKUM SEBAGAI FONDASI BANGUNAN PERADABAN PERGURUAN TINGGI YANG ANTI KEKERASAN SEKSUAL

The issuance of Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Number 30 of 2021 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education implies the issue of sexual violence in higher education that needs to be taken seriously. It is an irony that universities which are a reflection of the quality of humanity actually experience problems that attack the human rights of their community members. Efforts to tackle sexual violence in universities are rational because society's civilization is built on the foundation of a conducive academic climate. The next alternative path that can be taken is derived into a problem formulation about the extent to which the law is able to play its role in efforts to resolve the problem of sexual violence in universities. This study is aimed at analysis related to the functionalization of law and its consequences on the selection of certain legal fields, both administrative, civil, and criminal in overcoming sexual violence in universities. Through the juridical-normative method, this research was carried out using a statutory, case, and conceptual approach. Primary, secondary and tertiary legal materials were collected through literature study. Analysis of the legal materials that have been collected, selected, and systematized is carried out qualitatively and written in a descriptive-prescriptive manner. The results of the study show that efforts to build civilization for universities are parallel with respect for human rights. Coherently means that actions that are violations of human rights which in this case take the form of sexual violence must be handled properly. Law as a tool of social engineering becomes a very rational choice in addition to other social rules, namely decency, appropriateness, religion. Areas of law that can be applied include administrative, civil, and criminal law. Among the three fields of administrative law, it is the field of administrative law that needs to be put forward considering the character of criminal law which is ultimum remedium or a last resort when other efforts are not able to solve problems optimally. this is none other than because criminal law itself has limitations whose use causes negative excesses so that caution is required in its application.

U.S. Women Faculty in the Social Sciences Also Face Gender Inequalities.

There is a national interest in United States women’s underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); however, gender inequality in the social sciences has not received similar attention. Although women increasingly earn postgraduate degrees in the social sciences, women faculty still experience gender inequities. Consistent gender inequities include slower career advancement, blunted salaries, unequal workloads, work-life conflict, systemic gender biases, underrepresentation in positions of power, and hostile work environments. Cultural biases suggest that once women have achieved parity, gender bias no longer exists. This review challenges that notion by providing evidence from social science domains in which women are well-represented but continue to face systemic gender biases. We examine cultural influences on gender representation and career advancement in psychology, economics, political science, sociology, and anthropology. We make interdisciplinary comparisons of career trajectories and salaries using national data, documenting patterns across the social sciences. For example, women economists face gendered standards in publishing, and women political scientists are less likely to have their work cited than men. Furthermore, data show that salaries become stagnant as the representation of women in these fields increases. These disparities reflect cultural biases in perceptions of women’s competence stemming from social role theory. We discuss best practices to address these problems, focusing on the ADVANCE organizational change programs funded by the National Science Foundation that target (a) improving academic climate, (b) providing professional development, and (c) fostering social networking. Federally supported interventions can reveal systemic gender biases in academia and reduce gender disparities for women academics in the social sciences.

Efektivitas Layanan Bimbingan Belajar Untuk Meningkatkan Konsentrasi Belajar Siswa SMP Negeri 1 Tapian Nauli

This activity is to improve the academic climate that is creative, innovative, visionary, solutive and independent and to improve the quality of students in higher education so that later they can become members of the community who have academic and professional abilities who can apply, develop and disseminate science, technology and art as well as enrich the national culture. This Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out at SMP Negeri 1 Tapian Nauli, Jalan Sibolga-Barus KM 0.8 Tapian Nauli, Central Tapanuli Regency. Community service activities are carried out from 02 to 26 February 2022. Not all learning that takes place in schools can be accepted and understood by students. Every activity carried out is expected to provide benefits, as well as community service activities organized by the HKBP Nommensen Medan FKIP Student Team. This community service activity is expected to increase the enthusiasm for learning for students at SMP Negeri 1 Tapian Nauli.

The Auto-ethnographic Inquiry of a Female Chinese Graduate Student in Canada: Challenging, Accepting, and Transforming

China remains the top country of citizenship for international students and female students (married and single) comprise part of Chinese international students. However, female international students as a marginalized group face multiple challenges and parental, marital, personal, and cross-cultural situational barriers. Relying on an auto-ethnographic inquiry, this study digs into my experiences and stories as a Chinese female graduate student in Canada to examine and connect with the academic climate and broader communities. Specifically, the gender-based, culture-based, and race-based challenges that I faced during my studies at a Canadian university including my coping strategies are explored. The constructivist paradigm as a theoretical framework is used to delve into my perceptions and understanding of my lived experiences. Data was collected from my journals, memories, and emails written during my study in Canada. Based on my experience, this study unveils motivation, knowledge, and organizational gaps faced by the female group because of gender inequality, and cross-cultural and cross-racial differences.

Revitalization of library management to optimize literacy in SDN 1 Kunti Ponorogo

In schools, libraries play a critical role in determining the academic climate. To optimize scientific activities, the library has been designed as a structured system with various purposes and functions. The library at SDN 1 Kunti, Ponorogo, on the other hand, has been unable to function properly. As a result, it is necessary to make efforts to reform the library's proper function. One of the suggested activities is the revitalization of library management in order to improve the school's literacy culture. This activity is part of a series of MBKM-related Kampus Mengajar program. Based on the activities carried out, it appears that the student literacy culture in schools is improving, allowing this revitalization program to run smoothly and on target.

Preventing academic burnout and ensuring the wellbeing of teachers returning to academic studies

This article examines how mature Israeli teachers returning to academia after many years cope with the burden of their masters' studies in addition to their work as teachers and how the college can improve the well-being of these students and help avoid academic burnout. The study is based on repeated in-depth interviews with 18 female teachers. The analysis of the interviews and observations points to four areas that need to be considered. First, transformation, how returning to academic studies while working full-time changed the students’ lives. Second, the academic climate, the clarity of the elements in the program, coordination between the lecturers, relationships with teaching staff, as well as the facilities offered in the college. Third, academic burnout, which includes time management, challenges of balancing work, family and studies, and coping with frustration. The final theme is support, the importance of support by families, workplace, the staff, and their peers on their learning experience. The results point to the need for more coordination between staff, involving students in academic and administrative decisions and to introduce an ongoing program accompanying the M.Ed program that includes a support system to help reduce stress and avoid academic burnout.

Challenges Faced by Racial Minority Students at Justus-Liebig University, Germany and North-West University, South Africa

Educational institutions are characterised by cultural and institutional racism that is embedded in their structural systems, curriculum and practices that negatively impact the social and academic experiences of racial minority students. Prejudice and discrimination are rooted in hierarchies whereby some cases evidence one directional oppression of a racial group by the dominant or majority group. The study aimed at exploring challenges faced by racial minority students at Justus-Liebig University and North-West University. The study utilized a qualitative research approach in order understand the opinions, experiences and views of racial minority students about their campus realities. Fourteen in-depth interviews were undertaken with racial minority students and findings were analysed through content thematic analysis. The findings revealed that challenges faced by minority racial students from Justus-Lieberg University and North West University were similar. The challenges include but are not limited to; difficulties with interaction with the racial majority group, academic stressors like failure to adapt to high workload, adaptation to the academic climate, language and cultural barriers. This study calls for the development of new policies that pursue a restructuring of the campus environment to make it beneficial to all students. There is a need for universities to establish and maintain inclusive educational programs and policies that can assist minority students to be integrated into the academic systems.

Thirteen Tactics for Teaching Poetry as Architecture

What if encounters between modernist poetry and architecture exceed inspiration, imagery, and allusions? These two modes of making have crossed boundaries for over a century, from Walt Whitman’s ecstatic stanzas on Manhattan skyscrapers to architect John Hejduk’s poetry of memory and place. Buildings become materials for poetry, and poems become material for building. When a literary critic and an architect build on overlaps they have discovered in syllabi for American Poetry and Architecture Studio courses, their teaching collaboration becomes a sustainable maker-space for student work—and for the Humanities more generally. We found that linking a literature survey to an architectural design studio brings materiality and resourcefulness to working with poems and that interacting with the Humanities demonstrates praxis (theory + practice) from the perspective of architectural pedagogy. Our classes also engaged each other through The Repurpose Project, a community space that promotes reuse and diverts waste from the local landfill. The profusion of readily available materials at Repurpose afforded students with a rich sampling of architectural textures and languages, opening new possibilities for thinking and making. In an academic climate that groups literary studies and architecture as “not-STEM,” we designed sustainable and resilient pedagogies that go beyond problem solving. Finding the same quality of renewable resourcefulness in Wallace Stevens’s “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” we offer 13 tactics for teaching poetry as architecture.

An Evaluation of Arrogance Orientations of Academicians in Higher Education According to Student and Alumni Opinions

Arrogant individuals are individuals who tend to position themselves in the center, both in their daily lives and in organizational life, and their relationships with others. While they exaggerate their importance, they tend to take over success in any case. Arrogance, which has the potential to adversely affect the organizational climate, can turn into an obstacle to the state of collective engagement and have a devastating effect on the science discipline, for example, in the academic community. In this context, this study aims to examine the arrogance orientations of academicians working in universities, which are higher education organizations. For this purpose, phenomenology, which is a qualitative research design, was used, and thirteen participants consisting of undergraduate and graduate students and graduates were reached with the maximum variation sampling method. The data obtained through focus group interviews using semi-structured questions were analyzed in terms of content using the Maxquda qualitative data analysis program. Findings obtained as a result of the analyses reveal that the arrogance orientations of academicians were gathered under the dimensions of individuality, comparison, contempt, and discrediting. Based on these results, it is possible to indicate that it affects the academic organization climate negatively and feeds on individuality. In this context, it can contribute to reducing the potentially destructive effects of arrogance by encouraging collective work in academic organizations.

How stereotypes and relationships influence women and underrepresented minority students' fit in engineering

AbstractWomen and underrepresented minority (URM) undergraduates declare and complete science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors at different rates in comparison to majority groups. Explanations of these differences have long been deficit oriented, focusing on aptitude or similar characteristics, but more recent work focuses on institutional contexts, such as academic climate and feelings of belonging (fit). This study examines the experiences of women and URM students in engineering undergraduate programs, focusing on how they fit, experiential factors affecting fit, and how fit is mitigated by social relationships from their networks and organizations in which they participate (i.e., social capital). Thematic analysis of 55 women and URM interviewee responses shows that students who fit well were those with majority characteristics, including race (i.e., White, White‐passing) and gender (i.e., men, masculine appearance), and those in groups well represented in their programs numerically (i.e., men, Asian). In contrast, women and Black students encountered threats to their fit due to stereotyping from bias and differential treatment from others (i.e., being excluded from group work). However, students received advice from their social networks (i.e., family, professors) in which they were warned to expect discrimination, or through organizations in which they participated (i.e., National Association of Black Engineers) where their sense of community was expanded. The advice and resources provided through this network‐based and participatory social capital mitigated fit for women and Black students, albeit in different ways, helping to preserve their feelings of belonging and promote their persistence in engineering. We offer suggestions to enact university policies to increase access to social capital with homophilious alters and educational opportunities for majority groups.

Perceptions of Academic Departmental Climate by Men and Women and the Effects of Such Perceptions on Research Productivity

ABSTRACTWe demonstrate how men and women political scientists in PhD-granting departments perceive the professional climates there. We find remarkable differences in how men and women perceive the “cultural” climates of their departments, such as the degree to which it is sexist, but not in how they perceive strictly collegial aspects of climate. We also demonstrate that these patterns characterize the perceptions of men and women at both junior and senior ranks. Contrary to some past research, we also find that climate perceptions do not have a general effect on faculty research productivity. Further, perceptions of high departmental sexism by women scholars does not degrade their research productivity.

Faculty and Librarian Perceptions of Librarians as Researchers: Results from Semi-Structured Interviews

Following on the results of an earlier survey, this study explores the perceptions of librarians as researchers according to academic librarians and faculty using semi-structured interviews. Conducting research is a regular part of the academic librarian role, but one that often faces challenges to its undertaking, and one that is not always recognized. Exploring perceptions of librarian research helps to understand the current state of librarian research, the barriers faced by librarian researchers, and the value of librarian research. Fifteen librarians and seven faculty members were interviewed from eight Canadian universities. The interviews were coded and analysed to identify major themes. Librarian research was found to be sometimes unsupported and therefore difficult to conduct, but valuable to librarians and the discipline of librarianship. Additionally, librarian research was found to improve relations between librarians and faculty, and more broadly, was found to create a more collegial academic climate.

 This study examines the advantages of online teaching from the perspective of students at eleven institutions of higher education, universities and colleges, in Israel. The study was conducted at the end of the second semester of their academic studies, after students had experienced “face to face” studies, and they were asked to reply freely to an open question on their evaluation of the benefits of transitioning to online teaching. Students were forced to cope with a new reality, where they were compelled to study in a “digital classroom”. The academic-social climate, the conduct of lecturer-student relations, and the relations among the students themselves, changed instantaneously, with no preparation by any of those involved. Hence, the research findings can illuminate the strengths of online teaching, with a view to the future. Was the impact of teaching and learning in the coronavirus circumstances a one-time event for the students or one from which it is possible to examine and embrace new ways of learning as they see them?
 
 Based on 1,937 fully completed surveys from eleven academic institutions, we employed a mixed methods research design. Major themes were manually tagged, and an empirical model was developed. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the model’s goodness-of-fit. Findings present a host of parameters that have a significant positive influence on students’ positive perception of the transition to online teaching. 
 
 This study is the first to thoroughly examine advantages and disadvantages of the transition to online teaching among a large group of students, from several different academic institutions, and presents both qualitative and empirical results. Ethical implications of the findings are discussed.

The cost of mitigation revisited

Estimates of economic implications of climate policy are important inputs into policy-making. Despite care to contextualize quantitative assessments of mitigation costs, one strong view outside academic climate economics is that achieving Paris Agreement goals implies sizable macroeconomic losses. Here, we argue that this notion results from unwarranted simplification or omission of the complexities of quantifying mitigation costs, which generates ambiguity in communication and interpretation. We synthesize key factors influencing mitigation cost estimates to guide interpretation of estimates, for example from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and suggest ways to improve the underlying models. We propose alternatives for the scenario design framework, the framing of mitigation costs and the methods used to derive them, to better inform public debate and policy. Assessing the cost of climate change mitigation is essential to policy-making, yet for many the perception remains that meeting climate goals will entail economic loss. This Perspective unpacks key aspects of mitigation cost estimates to clarify interpretation and discussion of costs.
