This book is an edited volume concerning the current emerging topics of learning analytics (LA). It is important to note that is closely related to other similar topics such as: academic analytics (AA) (Campbell et al. 2007; Ferreira and Andrade 2014), educational data science (EDS) (Hawksey et al. 2013; Pitey et al. 2014) and to educational data mining (EDM) (Baker and Yacef 2009; Romero and Ventura 2013; Berland et al. 2014). We, however, believe that this is the same research area/community but with different names and offering different viewpoints of the same issue. The two editors of this book are researchers in LA. Johann Ari Larusson is a Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Digital Data, Analytics and Adaptive Learning at Pearson. His research draws on a range of disciplines including computer science, learning analytics, educational data mining and collaborative learning. He uses algorithms, methods and models and architect and engineer analysis platforms and toolkits for mining datasets and extracting new meanings about online activities. Johann, a founding member and chair of the First North East Regional Learning Analytics Symposium, has authored and coauthored several peer-reviewed publications, serving as a reviewer for a number of journals and conferences. Brandon White is a doctoral candidate in English at the University of California, Berkeley, where his theoretical interests in pedagogical history intersect with issues in applied educational technology. His work and research in learning analytics primarily concerns language recasting as deployed in student writing, and as taken up by educational theory, linguistics, and psychology. He is the author of a small number of peerreviewed publications and has served on several advisory committees for teaching and learning in higher education.
