Demineralization activating highly-disordered lignite-derived hard carbon for fast sodium storage

Lignite, as one of the coal materials, has been considered a promising precursor for hard carbon anodes in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its low cost and high carbon yield. Nevertheless, hard carbon directly derived from lignite pyrolysis typically exhibits highly ordered microstructure with narrow interlayer spacing and relatively unreactive interfacial properties, owing to the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and inert aromatic rings within its molecular composition. Herein, an innovative demineralization activating strategy is established to simultaneously modulate the interfacial properties and the microstructure of lignite-derived carbon for the development of high-performance SIBs. Demineralization process not only creates numerous void spaces in the matrix of lignite precursor to assist aromatic hydrocarbon rearrangement, thereby reducing the ordering and expanding interlayer spacing, but also exposes more interfacial oxygen-containing functional groups to effectively increasing the sodium storage active sites. As a result, the optimal demineralized lignite-derived hard carbon (DLHC 1300) delivers a high reversible capacity of 335.6 mAh/g at 30 mA g−1, superior rate performance of 246.3 mAh/g at 6 A/g and nearly 100 % capacity retention after 1100 cycles at 1A/g. Furthermore, the optimized DLHC 1300 material functions as an outstanding anode in sodium ion full cells. This work significantly advances the development of low-cost, high-performance commercial hard carbon anodes for SIBs.

Preferential association of PBDEs and PAHs with mineral particles vs. dissolved organic carbon: Implications for groundwater contamination at e-waste sites

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly detected contaminants at e-waste recycling sites. Against the conventional wisdom that PBDEs and PAHs are highly immobile and persist primarily in shallow surface soils, increasing evidence shows that these compounds can leach into the groundwater. Herein, we compare the leachabilities of PBDEs vs. PAHs from contaminated soils collected at an e-waste recycling site in Tianjin, China. Considerable amounts of BDE-209 (0.3–2 ng/L) and phenanthrene (42–106 ng/L), the most abundant PBDE and PAH at the site, are detected in the effluents of columns packed with contaminated soils, with the specific concentrations varying with hydrodynamic and solution chemistry conditions. Interestingly, the leaching potential of BDE-209 appears to be closely related to the release of colloidal mineral particles, whereas the leachability of phenanthrene correlates well with the concentration of dissolved organic carbon in the effluent, but showing essentially no correlation with the concentration of mineral particles. The surprisingly different trends of the leachability observed between BDE-209 and phenanthrene is counterintuitive, as PBDEs and PAHs often co-exist at e-waste recycling sites (particularly at the sites wherein incineration is being practiced) and share many similarities in terms of physicochemical properties. One possible explanation is that due to its extremely low solubility, BDE-209 predominantly exists in free-phase (i.e., as solid (nano)particles), whereas the more soluble phenanthrene is mainly sorbed to soil organic matter. Findings in this study underscore the need to better understand the mobility of highly hydrophobic organic contaminants at contaminated sites for improved risk management.

Marine Microbiota Responses to Shipping Scrubber Effluent Assessed at Community Structure and Function Endpoints.

The use of novel high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies to examine the responses of natural multidomain microbial communities to scrubber effluent discharges to the marine environment is still limited. Thus, we applied metabarcoding sequencing targeting the planktonic unicellular eukaryotic and prokaryotic fraction (phytoplankton, bacterioplankton, and protozooplankton) in mesocosm experiments with natural microbial communities from a polluted and an unpolluted site. Furthermore, metagenomic analysis revealed changes in the taxonomic and functional dominance of multidomain marine microbial communities after scrubber effluent additions. The results indicated a clear shift in the microbial communities after such additions, which favored bacterial taxa with known oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) biodegradation capacities. These bacteria exhibited high connectedness with planktonic unicellular eukaryotes employing variable trophic strategies, suggesting that environmentally relevant bacteria can influence eukaryotic community structure. Furthermore, Clusters of Orthologous Genes associated with pathways of PAHs and monocyclic hydrocarbon degradation increased in numbers at treatments with high scrubber effluent additions acutely. These genes are known to express enzymes acting at various substrates including PAHs. These indications, in combination with the abrupt decrease in the most abundant PAHs in the scrubber effluent below the limit of detection-much faster than their known half-lives-could point toward a bacterioplankton-initiated rapid ultimate biodegradation of the most abundant toxic contaminants of the scrubber effluent. The implementation of HTS could be a valuable tool to develop multilevel biodiversity indicators of the scrubber effluent impacts on the marine environment, which could lead to improved impact assessment. Unraveling the atmospheric oxidation mechanism and kinetics of naphthalene: Insights from theoretical exploration

Naphthalene, the most abundant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in the atmosphere, significantly influences OH consumption and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Naphthoquinone (NQ) is a significant contributor to ring-retaining SOA from naphthalene degradation, impacting the redox properties and toxicity of ambient particles. However, inconsistencies persist regarding concentrations of its isomers, 1,2-NQ and 1,4-NQ. In present work, our theoretical investigation into naphthalene's reaction with OH and subsequent oxygenation unveils their role in SOA formation. The reaction kinetics of initial OH and subsequent O2 oxidation was extensively studied using high-level quantum chemical methods (DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-ccpVQZ//M052x-D3/6–311++G(d,p)) combined with RRKM/master equation simulations. The reactions mainly proceed through electrophilic addition and abstraction from the aromatic ring. The total rate coefficient of naphthalene + OH at 300 K and 1 atm from our calculation (7.2 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) agrees well with previous measurements (∼1 × 10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1). The computed branching ratios facilitate accurate product yield determination. The largest yield of 1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl radical (add1) producing the major precursor of RO2 is computed to be 93.8 % in the ambient environment. Our calculated total rate coefficient (5.2 × 10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1) for add1 + O2 closely matches that of limited experimental data (8.0 × 10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1). Peroxy radicals (RO2) generated from add1 + O2 include 4-cis/trans-(1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-peroxy radical (add1-4OOadd-cis/trans, 66.0 %/17.5 %), 2-cis/trans-(1-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-peroxy radical (add1-2OOadd-cis/trans, 10.3 %/6.3 %). Regarding the debated predominance of 1,4-NQ (corresponding to the parent RO2, i.e., add1-4OOadd-cis/trans) and 1,2-NQ (corresponding to the parent RO2, i.e., add1-2OOadd-cis/trans) in the atmosphere, our findings substantiate the dominance of 1,4-NQ. This study also indicates potential weakening of 1,4-NQ's dominance due to competition from decomposition reactions of add1-4OOadd-cis/trans and add1-2OOadd-cis/trans. Precise reaction kinetics data are essential for characterizing SOA transformation derived from naphthalene and assessing their climatic impacts within modeling frameworks.

Characterisation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated with indoor PM0.1 and PM2.5 in Hanoi and implications for health risks

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with indoor PM pose a high risk to human health because of their toxicity. A total of 160 daily samples of indoor PM2.5 and PM0.1 were collected in Hanoi and analysed for 15 PAHs. In general, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs (car-PAHs) accounted for 21% ± 2%, 19.1% ± 2%, and 26% ± 3% of the concentrations of 15 PAHs in PM2.5, PM0.1-2.5, and PM0.1, respectively. Higher percentages of car-PAHs were found in smaller fractions (PM0.1), which can be easily deposited deep in the pulmonary regions of the human respiratory tract. The concentrations of 15 PAHs were higher in winter than in summer. The most abundant PAH species were naphthalene and phenanthrene, accounting for 11%–21% and 19%–23%, respectively. The PAH content in PM0.1 was almost twice as high as those in PM2.5 and PM0.1-2.5. Principal component analysis found that vehicle emissions and the combustion of biomass and coal were the main outdoor sources of PAHs, whereas indoor sources included cooking activities, the combustion of incense, scented candles, and domestic uses in houses. According to the results, 60%–90% of the PM0.1-bound BaP(eq) was deposited in the alveoli region, whereas 63%–75% of the PM2.5-bound BaP(eq) was deposited in head airways (HA), implying that most of the particles deposited in the HA region were PM0.1-2.5. The contributions of dibenz[a,h]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene were dominant and contributed from 36% to 51% and 31%–50%, respectively, to the carcinogenic potential, whereas benzo[a]pyrene contributed from 30% to 49% to the mutagenic potential for both size fractions. The incremental lifetime cancer risk, simulated by Monte Carlo simulation, was within the limits set by the US EPA, indicating an acceptable risk for the occupants. These results provide an additional scientific basis for protecting human health from exposure to indoor PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in tropical Australian stalagmites: a framework for reconstructing paleofire activity

Human activity and climate change are altering natural rates and intensities of wildfire, but the scale and extent of burning prior to the modern era are poorly understood. Paleofire activity may be reconstructed using a variety of records (e.g., charcoal in lake sediments, burn scars on tree rings), but these are not available in all environmental settings. Here we investigate the utility of a novel paleofire proxy: trace pyrogenic organic compounds in stalagmites. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are linked to burning of biomass and are transported downward through soil and bedrock by infiltrating rainwater and incorporated into stalagmites in underlying caves where they are preserved. In order to test links between the stalagmite PAHs and fire above the cave, we performed a series of experiments using PAH distributions at KNI-51, a shallow cave located in tropical Western Australia, where bushfire is a regular occurrence. First, the possibility of surface contamination was evaluated by measuring PAH abundances and distributions in sequential digestions and by considering other possible additional sources, such as regional oil and gas fields or proximal combustion of fossil fuels. Second, PAHs were measured in soils above the cave and in sediments from the stalagmite chamber floor as possible sources of these organic compounds, and at near annual resolution in three aragonite stalagmites to evaluate the degree of deposition and conservation. Third, possible non-pyrogenic sources of organic compounds were evaluated through alkane distribution and specific m/z ratios. Fourth, signal replication of PAHs was tested in two coeval stalagmites. Fifth, satellite-mapped fire scars were used to examine the relationship between stalagmite PAH abundances and proximity of burning to the cave.The results support the hypothesis that PAHs in KNI-51 stalagmite carbonate reflect paleofire activity within 3 km of the cave, and thus that stalagmites can serve as an important new high resolution proxy for landscape-scale fire activity. Given that karst is present in many fire-prone environments, and that stalagmites can be precisely dated and may grow continuously for millennia, the potential utility of a stalagmite-based paleofire proxy is high.

Microplastics reduced bioavailability and altered toxicity of phenanthrene to maize (Zea mays L.) through modulating rhizosphere microbial community and maize growth

Due to its large specific surface area and great hydrophobicity, microplastics can adsorb polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), affecting the bioavailability and the toxicity of PAHs to plants. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of D550 and D250 (with diameters of 550 μm and 250 μm) microplastics on phenanthrene (PHE) removal from soil and PHE accumulation in maize (Zea mays L.). Moreover, the effects of microplastics on rhizosphere microbial community of maize grown in PHE-contaminated soil would also be determined. The results showed that D550 and D250 microplastics decreased the removal of PHE from soil by 6.5% and 2.7% and significantly reduced the accumulation of PHE in maize leaves by 64.9% and 88.5%. Interestingly, D550 microplastics promoted the growth of maize and enhanced the activities of soil protease and alkaline phosphatase, while D250 microplastics significantly inhibited the growth of maize and decreased the activities of soil invertase, alkaline phosphatase and catalase, in comparison with PHE treatment. In addition, microplastics changed the rhizosphere soil microbial community and reduced the relative abundance of PAHs degrading bacteria (Pseudomonas, Massilia, Proteobacteria), which might further inhibit the removal of PHE from soil. This study provided a new perspective for evaluating the role of microplastics on the bioavailability of PHE to plants and revealing the combined toxicity of microplastics and PHE to soil microcosm and plant growth.

Fried v2: a new grid of mass-loss rates for externally irradiated protoplanetary discs

ABSTRACT We present a new fried grid of mass-loss rates for externally far-ultraviolet (FUV) irradiated protoplanetary discs. As a precursor to the new grid, we also explore the microphysics of external photoevaporation, determining the impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) abundance, metallicity, coolant depletion (via freeze out and radial drift), and grain growth (depletion of small dust in the outer disc) on disc mass-loss rates. We find that metallicity variations typically have a small effect on the mass-loss rate, since the impact of changes in heating, cooling and optical depth to the disc approximately cancel out. The new fried grid therefore focuses on (i) expanding the basic physical parameter space (disc mass, radius, UV field, stellar mass), (ii) on enabling variation of the the PAH abundance, and (iii) including an option for grain growth to have occurred or not in the disc. What we suggest is the fiducial model is comparable to the original fried grid. When the PAH-to-dust ratio is lower, or the dust in the wind more abundant, the mass-loss rate can be substantially lower. We demonstrate with a small set of illustrative disc evolutionary calculations that this in turn can have a significant impact on the disc mass/radius/ evolution and lifetime.

Insights into ecotoxicity effects of PAHs and ecosystem responses of remediation strategies under cold stress: From PAHs degradation to ecological restoration regulated by signal molecular

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) known as persistent contaminants have been detected in soils worldwide, especially in cryogenic environment. Although researchers have conducted lots of researches on PAHs, the ecological toxicity of PAHs and the remediation mechanism of PAHs polluted soils under low temperature are still unclear. Herein, we attempted to characterize remediation of PAHs polluted environment by coupling the PAH degradation with ecological restoration. PAHs could not degrade completely in natural and multiple metabolites accumulate in soil under low temperature. Long-term accumulation of pollutants could cause severe oxidative stress, inhibit the growth of plants and normal process and transformation of substances of microorganisms, while increased the relative abundance of PAHs degrading bacteria (Sphingobacterium, Pseudomonas, Rhodococcus and Massilia etc) and degradation genes (nidA nidB, nahAa, nahAb, nahAc, nidD, phdJ and phdG). As soil amendents, biochar, microbial agent, biochar together with microbial agent could remove 75%, 83%, and 93% of PAHs from soil, and 47%, 50%, and 58% of PAHs from plants, respectively. Under the bioaugmentation of soil amendments, soil microorganisms played an important role in PAHs degradation and ecological restoration. Meanwhile, we identified three signal molecules related to ecological restoration which play a crucial role in regulating pollution removal and ecological restoration by indigenous microorganisms. OOHL and C10-HSL are involved in environmental resistance, degradation of PAHs and transformation of nutrients. 3-oxo-C14-HSL promoted the degradation of PAHs and cold adaption of microorganism. Our study provided an innovative strategy for controlling PAHs degradation and ecological restoration from the perspective of microbial transboundary informatics.

Spatial distribution, source identification and flux estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine pesticides in basins of the Eastern Indian Ocean

Although polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been recorded worldwide, information on their presence in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO), especially south of 10°S, remains limited. We investigated the distribution and depositional fluxes of PAHs and OCPs, and the major sources and ecological risks of PAHs in EIO surface sediments from the Central Indian Ocean (CIOB) and Wharton Basin (WB). The concentration of Σ18 PAHs and ∑10 OCPs had an average value (± SD) of 138.4 ± 52.34 and 0.8 ± 0.20 ng g−1, respectively. PAHs may mainly affected by traffic emission and biomass and wood combustion. Persistent organic pollutant accumulation rate (PAR) and depositional flux (DF) values showed that abundant PAHs might lost during top-down transport. The low trans- chordane (CHL)/cis-CHL ratio and PAR of OCPs may indicated few OCPs were inputted into the EIO recently. The results of binary isotope mixing modeling indicate the predominance of marine organic matter (MOM) in total organic carbon (TOC) of sediments. Fluoranthene (Flour) and pyrene (Py) might have potential biological effects in the EIO. The study provided background values for PAHs and OCPs in the Indian Ocean, and preliminarily revealed the fate of POPs in the open oceans.

Trophodynamics and bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine food web from Laizhou Bay, China

Here, we collected 16 species (n = 298) from Laizhou Bay, China to investigate the trophodynamics, bioaccumulation and cancer risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Results demonstrated that naphthalene was the most abundant PAH, followed by phenanthrene and fluorene in the marine organisms. The sum of 16 PAHs concentrations (Ʃ16PAHs) ranked with algae (19,435 ng·g−1 lipid weight, lw) > benthonic animals (6599 ng·g−1 lw) > fish (1760 ng·g−1 lw). Combustion and oil spill are two primary sources, contributing 60.3 % and 39.7 % of Ʃ16PAHs, respectively. High values of log BAF were found for 4–6 rings PAHs. Algae and benthonic animals showed a high ability to accumulate 2–4 rings PAHs and 5–6 rings PAHs, respectively. A biodilution pattern for PAHs was found in the marine food web. The carcinogenic risks of some benthos and fish were higher than 1 × 10−6, threatening resident health by consumption of these seafoods.

Shock excitation of H2 in the James Webb Space Telescope era

Context. Molecular hydrogen, H2, is the most abundant molecule in the Universe. Thanks to its widely spaced energy levels, it predominantly lights up in warm gas, T ≳ 102 K, such as shocked regions externally irradiated or not by interstellar UV photons, and it is one of the prime targets of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations. These may include shocks from protostellar outflows, supernova remnants impinging on molecular clouds, all the way up to starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Aims. Sophisticated shock models are able to simulate H2 emission from such shocked regions. We aim to explore H2 excitation using shock models, and to test over which parameter space distinct signatures are produced in H2 emission. Methods. We here present simulated H2 emission using the Paris-Durham shock code over an extensive grid of ~14 000 plane-parallel stationary shock models, a large subset of which are exposed to a semi-isotropic external UV radiation field. The grid samples six input parameters: the preshock density, shock velocity, transverse magnetic field strength, UV radiation field strength, the cosmic-ray-ionization rate, and the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs. Physical quantities resulting from our self-consistent calculations, such as temperature, density, and width, have been extracted along with H2 integrated line intensities. These simulations and results are publicly available on the Interstellar Medium Services platform. Results. The strength of the transverse magnetic field, as quantified by the magnetic scaling factor, b, plays a key role in the excitation of H2. At low values of b (≲0.3, J-type shocks), H2 excitation is dominated by vibrationally excited lines; whereas, at higher values (b ≳ 1, C-type shocks), rotational lines dominate the spectrum for shocks with an external radiation field comparable to (or lower than) the solar neighborhood. Shocks with b ≥ 1 can potentially be spatially resolved with JWST for nearby objects. H2 is typically the dominant coolant at lower densities (≲104 cm−3); at higher densities, other molecules such as CO, OH, and H2O take over at velocities ≲20 km s−1 and atoms, for example, H, O, and S, dominate at higher velocities. Together, the velocity and density set the input kinetic energy flux. When this increases, the excitation and integrated intensity of H2 increases similarly. An external UV field mainly serves to increase the excitation, particularly for shocks where the input radiation energy is comparable to the input kinetic energy flux. These results provide an overview of the energetic reprocessing of input kinetic energy flux and the resulting H2 line emission.

Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Water of Ijegun-Egba Community of Lagos State, Nigeria

Introduction: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common pollutants in water that have been reported to cause severe health effects in humans and harm the ecosystem. Aims: This study examined the concentrations of PAHs in different water sources used for domestic purposes in Ijegun- Egba community. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four (24) groundwater samples were collected from four sites in Ijegun-Egba. The Physicochemical parameters were determined using standard methods and PAHs were determined through Gas chromatography-flame – Flame ionization detector. Results: The appearance, odour, and temperature were within the limits of World Health Organisation (WHO). Conductivity levels were within the WHO limit (2,500µS/cm) in well water (1,400µS/cm) and borehole water (1,470 µS/cm) except for river water (4,432.5 µS/cm) which was above WHO recommended limit (2,500µS/cm). pH was within limits in all sites studied except for borehole water (pH =4.0). Among the 16 PAHs, Naphthalene (NAPH) was generally the most abundant PAH (23.89% to Σ16PAHs). There was a significant difference (at < 0.005) in the level of PAHs in the four sources of water. Conclusion: River water has the highest level of PAHs. This points to the activities of the tank farms and suggests that petrol and oil deposits find themselves either through percolation, soil runoffs, or erosion into the water bodies. The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency should continue to monitor the activities of oil tankers in Ijegun community oil deports. Truck stations should be built outside the community and the residents should avoid the use of water from rivers in Ijegun community.

Isolation and characterization of phenanthrene-degrading bacteria from urban soil

Phenanthrene (PHE) is one of the most abundant Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in urban soil. So far, majority of microbe-mediated degradation approaches have relied on microbes isolated from polluted or mined soils. These microbes, if introduced into non-native soil, may not able to establish themselves, or alter the native microbiome of soil, making their commercial use a challenge. Therefore, this study was conducted to screen and isolate bacteria, from urban soil that degrade PHE. Degradation of 50 mg/L PHE by day 4 was highest in Providencia rettgeri VMP5 (98.63%) followed by Bacillus tropicus VMP4 (89.9%), Bacillus sp. VMP2 (82.63%), P. stuartii VMP3 (39.72%) and least Dellaglioa algida VMP1 (3.32%). Besides, VMP5, showed the presence of several fatty acid ethyl esters that act as biosurfactants and anti-microbial agent, which may play a crucial role in increasing its adaptability and degradation potential. VMP4 and VMP2 were also found to produce more defense compounds which may be crucial for their adaptability to PAH rich environment. Thus, VMP5, VMP4 and VMP2 showed promising remediation potential that can be further explored to develop commercially viable consortia for PHE mitigation in urban soil.

Turbulent processing of PAHs in protoplanetary discs

Context. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been detected in numerous circumstellar discs. Despite the correlation between stellar temperature and low PAH detections rates, the diversity of PAH detections and non-detections at similar stellar properties is not well understood. Aims. We propose the continuous processing of PAHs through clustering, adsorption on dust grains, and their reverse-processes as key mechanisms to reduce the emission-capable PAH abundance in protoplanetary discs. This cycle of processing is driven by vertical turbulence in the disc mixing PAHs between the disc midplane and the photosphere. Methods. We used a theoretical Monte Carlo model for photodesorption in the photosphere and a coagulation code in the disc midplane to estimate the relevance and timescale of these processes in a Herbig Ae/Be disc environment. By combining these components in a 1D vertical model, we calculated the gas-phase depletion of PAHs that stick as clusters on dust grains. Results. Our results show that the clustering of gas-phase PAHs is very efficient, and that clusters with more than 100 monomers can grow for years before they are able to freeze out in the disc midplane. Once a PAH cluster is frozen on the dust grain surface, the large heat capacity of these clusters prevents them from evaporating off the grains in UV-rich environments such as the photosphere. Therefore, the clustering of PAHs followed by freeze-out can lead to a depletion of gas-phase PAHs in protoplanetary discs. We find that this mechanism is more efficient when the PAH species has fewer carbon atoms. In contrast, PAH monomers and very small clusters consisting of a few monomers can easily detach from the grain by absorption of a single UV photon. Evaluated over the lifetime of protoplanetary discs, we find a depletion of PAHs by a factor that ranges between 50 and 1000 compared to the standard ISM abundance of PAHs in the inner disc through turbulent processing. Conclusions. Through these processes, we favour PAHs smaller than circumovalene (C66H20) as the major gas-phase emitters of the disc photosphere as larger PAH monomers cannot photodesorb from the grain surface. These gas-phase PAHs co-exist with large PAH clusters sticking on dust grains. We find a close relation between the amount of PAHs frozen out on dust grains and the dust population, as well as the strength of the vertical turbulence.

Total and bioavailable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in unused and operated heat-not-burn tobacco products and conventional cigarettes

Tobacco product waste poses a global environmental issue, affecting urban and coastal areas alike. The present studies report, for the first time, the total and bioavailable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations in unused and operated heat-not-burn (HnBs) tobacco products. To enable direct comparisons, identical sets of studies were conducted using conventional cigarettes (CCs). Five low-molecular PAHs were determined in HnBs at total concentrations that were of the same order before and after operation (Σ5PAH = 47.37 ± 3.44 ng unit−1 and Σ5PAH = 69.36 ± 5.78 ng unit−1 in unused and used HnBs, respectively). The incomplete combustion of organics during smoking of CCs, yielded substantially higher amounts of PAHs with their sum (Σ10PAHs = 1449 ± 113 ng unit−1) being >20 times larger than those in HnBs. The tobacco and filter were the most contaminated parts in HnBs. In unused CCs, tobacco had the highest PAHs load and after smoking, the spent filter was the most contaminated part, containing ∼80% of the total amount of PAHs. Naphthalene was the most abundant PAH detected in all tobacco products. Despite the high total PAH concentrations found in smoked CCs, the sums of the bioavailable PAH concentrations were of the same order in all tested tobacco products (Σ5PAH = 61.38 ± 1.79 ng unit−1 in unused HnBs, Σ5PAH = 70.87 ± 7.67 ng unit−1 in used HnBs, Σ4PAH = 66.92 ± 5.95 ng unit−1 in unused CCs, and Σ6PAH = 47.94 ± 1.26 ng unit−1 in smoked CCs). This finding was related to smoking affecting PAHs’ leachability from CCs and delaying their desorption from the solid matrix. Adjusting the pH, salt and humic acids content at environmentally relevant values did not affect PAHs leaching at 24 h of soaking. Finally, the leaching behavior of PAHs in natural waters (river water, rainwater, and seawater) was found similar to that in ultrapure water, experimentally verifying the ability of tobacco product waste to leach PAHs into the aquatic environment.

Influence of hydrothermal asteroidal conditions on the molecular structure and isotopic compositions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

A variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are reported in carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) and in the interstellar medium (ISM). Although PAHs in CCs are not as large as those detected in the ISM, their carbon isotope composition is interpreted as pinpointing an interstellar origin. In contrast, their hydrogen isotope composition can be related to the extent of secondary processes, as is the proportion of alkylated PAHs within CCs. Here, we experimentally investigate the molecular and isotopic evolution of PAHs under simulated asteroidal hydrothermal conditions at 150 °C. Results show that PAHs are chemically stable under these conditions whatever their size, i.e. no destruction, conjugation nor alkylation occurs, even in the presence of other reactive organic molecules. Plus, PAHs retain their carbon isotope compositions even in the presence of another carbon-rich reservoir, either organic or inorganic. On the other hand, their hydrogen isotope composition is modified through exchange with water. Of note, as shown by additional experiments, the presence of smectites, abundant in CCs, impacts the relative abundances of extractable PAHs, saponite trapping more efficiently the larger PAHs. Altogether, results of the present experiments show that PAHs of CCs can be used as tracers of both pre-accretion and secondary processes.

Health Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Cooking Fuels burning in Nigeria

Cooking activities are an important source of indoor air pollution which contributes significantly to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment. This study investigated sixteen (16) priority PAHs emitted from smoke in eight (8) cooking fuels commonly used in Nigeria. Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for sample analysis and the potential health risk associated with exposure to PAHs were evaluated. The highest total quantified PAHs concentration was obtained from the burning of palm kernel fiber with an average ΣPAHs of 14.06 mg/kg. The result showed a variation in the average concentration of 10.82 − 14.06 mg/kg for all the cooking fuels. 3-ringed PAHs were found to be the dominant PAHs in the samples considered in terms of concentrations and frequency of occurrence at 7.03-9.42 mg/kg. Benzo[a]anthracene was the most abundant PAHs in biomass materials while Benzo[a]pyrene was the most abundant in liquified petroleum gas and Benzo[b]fluoranthene in kerosene. The cancer risk for both the children and adult obtained for all the cooking fuel samples were less than 10 − 6 which is satisfactory except in sawdust which has a value of 1.30 × 10 − 5 and 1.44 × 10 − 5 for child and adult, respectively. It is recommended that cleaner cooking fuels be used in well-ventilated environments to reduce exposure to these pollutants. Impact of Potentially Toxic Compounds in Cow Milk: How Industrial Activities Affect Animal Primary Productions.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) frequently coexist in soils near industrial areas and sometimes in environmental compartments directly linked to feed (forage) and food (milk) production. However, the distribution of these pollutants along the dairy farm production chain is unclear. Here, we analyzed soil, forage, and milk samples from 16 livestock farms in Spain: several PTEs and PAHs were quantified. Farms were compared in terms of whether they were close to (<5 km) or far away from (>5 km) industrial areas. The results showed that PTEs and PAHs were enriched in the soils and forages from farms close to industrial areas, but not in the milk. In the soil, the maximum concentrations of PTEs reached 141, 46.1, 3.67, 6.11, and 138 mg kg-1 for chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead, respectively, while fluoranthene (172.8 µg kg-1) and benzo(b)fluoranthene (177.4 µg kg-1) were the most abundant PAHs. Principal component analysis of the soil PTEs suggested common pollution sources for iron, arsenic, and lead. In the forage, the maximum contents of chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead were 32.8, 7.87, 1.31, 0.47, and 7.85 mg kg-1, respectively. The PAH found in the highest concentration in the feed forage was pyrene (120 µg kg-1). In the milk, the maximum PTE levels were much lower than in the soil or the feed forages: 74.1, 16.1, 0.12, 0.28, and 2.7 µg kg-1 for chromium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead, respectively. Neither of the two milk samples exceeded the 20 µg kg-1 limit for lead set in EU 1881/2006. Pyrene was the most abundant PAH found in the milk (39.4 µg kg-1), while high molecular weight PAHs were not detected. For PTEs, the results showed that soil-forage transfer factors were higher than forage-milk ratios. Our results suggest that soils and forages around farms near industries, as well as the milk produced from those farms, have generally low levels of PTE and PAH contaminants.

Characterization, risk assessment, and source estimation of PM10-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during wintertime in the ambient air of Basrah City, Iraq

In this study, the concentration and structure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with the ambient PM10 in Basrah City, Iraq have been investigated for the first time. From December 2021 to February 2022, PM10 samples were collected on quartz fiber filters, extracted using an optimized extraction protocol, and analyzed for the sixteen US EPA priority PAHs. The results indicated that 4- and 5-ring PAHs represent 52% of the total detected PAHs. The most abundant PAHs over the study period were chrysene (1.2 ± 1.5 ng m−3), fluorene (0.9 ± 1.4 ng m−3), and benzo[b]fluoranthene (0.7 ± 0.9 ng m−3). Source identification suggested that PM10-bound PAHs primarily originated from pyrogenic and petrogenic activities in Basrah City. In addition, the cancer risk associated to PAH exposure was assessed based on benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration and was found ranging from 0.07 to 6.32 ng m-3; hence, it exceeded the threshold limit of 1.0 ng m−3 established by the European legislation (EU, 2014). Benzo[a]pyrene was determined to be main contributor to total carcinogenic power of the detected PAHs, accounting for 50.3%, followed by dibenz[a,h]anthracene (22.3%). Similarly, benzo[a]pyrene represented a major contributor to PAH associated mutagenicity, accounting for 43.5% of the total.
