Oxidation behavior and atomic structural transition of size-selected coalescence-resistant tantalum nanoclusters

Herein a series of size-selected Ta N (N = 147, 309, 561, 923, 1415, 2057, 6525, 10 000, 20 000) clusters are generated using a gas-phase condensation cluster beam source equipped with a lateral time-of-flight mass-selector. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM) imaging reveals good thermal stability of Ta N clusters in this study. The oxidation-induced amorphization is observed from AC-STEM imaging and further demonstrated through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The oxidized Ta predominantly exists in the +5 oxidation state and the maximum spontaneous oxidation depth of the Ta cluster is observed to be 5 nm under prolonged atmosphere exposure. Furthermore, the size-dependent sintering and crystallization processes of oxidized Ta N clusters are observed with an in situ heating technique, and eventually, ordered structures are restored. As the temperature reaches 1300 °C, a fraction of oxidized Ta309 clusters exhibit decahedral and icosahedral structures. However, the five-fold symmetry structures are absent in larger clusters, instead, these clusters exhibit ordered structures resembling those of the crystalline Ta2O5 films. Notably, the sintering and crystallization process occurs at temperatures significantly lower than the melting point of Ta and Ta2O5, and the ordered structures resulting from annealing remain well-preserved after six months of exposure to ambient conditions.

Hidden Impurities Generate False Positives in Single Atom Catalyst Imaging.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are an emerging class of materials, leveraging maximum atom utilization and distinctive structural and electronic properties to bridge heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Direct imaging methods, such as aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, are commonly applied to confirm the atomic dispersion of active sites. However, interpretations of data from these techniques can be challenging due to simultaneous contributions to intensity from impurities introduced during synthesis processes, as well as any variation in position relative to the focal plane of the electron beam. To address this matter, this paper presents a comprehensive study on two representative SACs containing isolated nickel or copper atoms. Spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, were employed to prove the high metal dispersion of the catalytic atoms. Employing scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging combined with single-atom-sensitive electron energy loss spectroscopy, we scrutinized thin specimens of the catalysts to provide an unambiguous chemical identification of the observed single-atom species and thereby distinguish impurities from active sites at the single-atom level. Overall, the study underscores the complexity of SACs characterization and establishes the importance of the use of spectroscopy in tandem with imaging at atomic resolution to fully and reliably characterize single-atom catalysts.

Redox-driven surface generation of highly active Pd/PdO interface boosting low-temperature methane combustion

The supported Pd catalyst has been a benchmark for methane elimination. However, the active structures have been long under debate. Here, by the aberration-corrected high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we revealed the two-dimensional metallic Pd bumps on the PdO surface (litchi-like structure) generated by the redox atmosphere under the lean condition as a highly active structure of the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst. The substantially increased Pd/PdO interfaces boost the methane combustion activity higher than the similar catalysts reported previously, and remarkably enhance the reaction rate by 15.5 and 10.7 times that of pure PdO or metallic Pd counterpart under lean condition at 300 °C, respectively. Density-functional theory calculations confirm the synergistic C–C bond activation of methane on the Pd/PdO interfaces. Our work provides new insight into the traditional understanding of the chemical state and particle size effects of the industrial Pd catalysts for methane oxidation.

Complementary nanodomain structures in topologically close-packed precipitates of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy

High-strength aluminium alloys attract continuous research interest, owing to their wide use in aerospace and terrestrial transportation industries. The performance of the alloys is essentially determined by nanoscale precipitates, thus understanding the structure and formation mechanism of the precipitates during thermal processing is of great importance. Here, we reveal complementary domain structures in precipitates in a high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy using a combination of aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Through the transfer of fivefold symmetry polyhedra at domain boundaries, the intermediate precipitates develop two sets of highly ordered and structurally complementary nanoscale domains in their nucleation and growth. This new type of atom packing maintains the topologically close-packed structure inside the precipitates while reducing the lattice misfit with the Al matrix and the barrier of structural transformations on two interfaces, demonstrating good thermal stability. Our discoveries lead to insight into the precipitate evolution in the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy system and can help understand other precipitation processes of complex structured phases. Furthermore, the evolution process demonstrates an advanced mode of building metastable architectures with nanoscale interlocking pieces in alloy matrixes, which may inspire strategies to obtain high-strength, lightweight and thermostable alloys.

What Elements Really Intercalate into Pd Lattice When Heated in Dimethylformamide?

Palladium hydrides (PdHx) are pivotal in both fundamental research and practical applications across a wide spectrum. PdHx nanocrystals, synthesized by heating in dimethylformamide (DMF), exhibit remarkable stability, granting them widespread applications in the field of electrocatalysis. However, this stability appears inconsistent with their metastable nature. The substantial challenges in characterizing nanoscale structures contribute to the limited understanding of this anomalous phenomenon. Here, through a series of well-conceived experimental designs and advanced characterization techniques, including aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), we have uncovered evidence that indicates the presence of C and N within the lattice of Pd (PdCxNy), rather than H (PdHx). By combining theoretical calculations, we have thoroughly studied the potential configurations and thermodynamic stability of PdCxNy, demonstrating a 2.5:1 ratio of C to N infiltration into the Pd lattice. Furthermore, we successfully modulated the electronic structure of Pd nanocrystals through C and N doping, enhancing their catalytic activity in methanol oxidation reactions. This breakthrough provides a new perspective on the structure and composition of Pd-based nanocrystals infused with light elements, paving the way for the development of advanced catalytic materials in the future.

Universal Synthesis of Single-Atom Catalysts by Direct Thermal Decomposition of Molten Salts for Boosting Acidic Water Splitting.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered prominent materials in the field of catalysis due to their high metal atom utilization and selectivity. However, the wide-ranging applications of SACs remain a significant challenge due to their complex preparation processes. Here, a universal strategy is reported to prepare a series of noble metal single atoms on different non-noble metal oxides through a facile one-step thermal decomposition of molten salts. By using a mixture of non-noble metal nitrate and a small-amount noble metal chloride as the precursor, noble metal single atoms can be easily introduced into the non-noble metal oxide lattice owing to the cation exchange in the in situ formed molten salt, followed by the thermal decomposition of nitrate anions during the heating process. Analyses using aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy confirm the formation of the finely dispersed single atoms. Specially, the as-synthesized Ir single atoms (10.97 wt%) and Pt single atoms (4.60 wt%) on the Co3O4 support demonstrate outstanding electrocatalytic activities for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively.

Secondary-electron imaging of bulk crystalline specimens in an aberration corrected STEM

Atomic-scale electron microscopy traditionally probes thin specimens, with thickness below 100 nm, and its feasibility for bulk samples has not been documented. In this study, we explore the practicality of scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) imaging with secondary electrons (SE), using a silicon-wedge specimen having a maximum thickness of 18 μm. We find that the atomic structure is present in the entire thickness range of the SE images although the background intensity increases moderately with thickness. The consistent intensity of secondary electron (SE) images at atomic positions and the modest increase in background intensity observed in silicon suggest a limited contribution from SEs generated by backscattered electrons, a conclusion supported by our multislice calculations. We conclude that achieving atomic resolution in SE imaging for bulk specimens is indeed attainable using aberration-corrected STEM and an aberration-corrected scanning electron microscope (SEM) may have the capacity for atomic-level resolution, holding great promise for future strides in materials research.

Helium reservoirs in iron nanoparticles on the lunar surface

The Moon’s surface is directly exposed to the space environment and subject to alteration by space weathering. One agent of space weathering, the solar wind, enriches the lunar surface with helium. Although we understand how helium is delivered to the Moon, certain aspects of helium concentration processes on the surface remain unknown, such as why impact-generated glass aggregates contain more helium than equally sized soil grains of other types. Here we have analyzed the contents of vesicular iron nanoparticles in lunar impact glasses using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy and show that the nanoparticles contain high concentrations of helium (10-24 atoms/nm3). The widespread occurrence of vesicular iron nanoparticles among lunar samples suggests that they may be an important helium reservoir. These results also suggest that space weathering of iron-rich minerals plays a role in helium sequestration on the Moon and potentially on other airless bodies.

Multicomponent (Hf-Zr-Ta)B2 coatings for carbon/carbon composites and structural optimization enabling superior ablation resistance

Multicomponent (Hf-Zr-Ta)B2 potentially provides improved ablation resistance compared with silicon-based ceramics. Here we deposited (Hf0.5–x/2Zr0.5–x/2Tax)B2 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2) coatings onto C/C composites, and investigated their ablation behaviors under an oxyacetylene torch with a heat flux of 2.4 MW m–2. It was observed that the x = 0.1 oxide scale bulged but was denser, and the x = 0.2 oxide scale was blown away due to the formation of excessive liquid. Based on these findings, we further developed a duplex (Hf-Zr-Ta)B2 coating that showed a linear recession rate close to zero (0.11 μm s–1) after two 120-s ablation cycles. It is identified that the resulting oxide scale is mainly composed of (Hf, Zr)6Ta2O17 and (Hf, Zr, Ta)O2 by performing aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy. The protective mechanism is related to the peritectic transformation of orthorhombic-(Hf, Zr)6Ta2O17 to tetragonal-(Hf, Zr, Ta)O2 plus Ta-dominated liquid. This study contributes to the development of Ta-containing multicomponent UHTC bulk and coatings for ultra-high temperature applications.

A method to synthesize specific active Cu sites of single-atom catalysts with high stability for acetylene hydration

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in the realm of energy and catalytic conversion due to their maximum atomic efficiency. Herein, we report a cascade anchoring strategy for the preparation of a Cu-S1O2 species of single-atom catalyst attached to a carbon carrier containing P and S (Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS) with a content of 12.4 wt%. Over the Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS catalyst, the conversion of 95.8% and selectivity of 87.2% for acetylene hydration could still be achieved at 70 h (T = 200°C, GHSV(C2H2) = 90 h−1 and VH2O/VC2H2 = 4). X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests reveal that the Cu atoms of Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS are predominantly coordinated in a trinary manner (Cu-S1O2). Based on high-resolution aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM), it is demonstrated that the Cu single-atom sites are highly dispersed in Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS. It is evident from the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that Cu-S1O2 SA/CPS has a two-dimensional layered structure. The specific structure of the active site Cu is primarily attributed to the coordination of S and O atoms, resulting in its superior stability for acetylene hydration towards the synthesis of acetaldehyde. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the formation of the Cu-S1O2 site facilitates the activation of acetylene, which is a pivotal step in the acetylene hydration process and considered as the rate-determining step. This article not only introduces an innovative strategy in the synthesis of Cu SACs but also represents a significant breakthrough in the stability of Cu SACs in acetylene hydration.

Atomic-Scale Imaging of Clay Mineral Nanosheets and Their Supramolecular Complexes through Electron Microscopy: A Supramolecular Chemist's Perspective.

Recent advancements in electron microscopy techniques have revolutionized the ability to directly visualize and understand the intricate world of supramolecular chemistry. This paper provides a concise overview of a study delving into the atomic-scale imaging of monolayer clay mineral nanosheets and their associated supramolecular complexes. The imaging is conducted by harnessing the power of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Clay mineral nanosheets, with their anionic charge and ultrathin thickness (of 1 nm), serve as a stable Coulombic host material for cationic guest molecules through electrostatic interactions, facilitating exceptional stability and control during observation. By incorporation of heavy-metal atom markers coordinated within the target molecules, high-angle annular dark field STEM enables a clear visualization of these supramolecular complexes. This approach helps to overcome the limitations of graphene-based systems and expands the possibilities of atomic-scale imaging of nonperiodic molecular assemblies formed by weak supramolecular interactions. Activation of iron oxide minerals in an aquifer by humic acid to promote adsorption of organic molecules

In aquifers, the sequestration and transformation of organic carbon are closely associated with soil iron oxides and can facilitate the release of iron ions from iron oxide minerals. There is a strong interaction between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron oxide minerals in aquifers, but the extent to which iron is activated by DOM exposure to active iron minerals in natural aquifers, the microscopic distribution of minerals on the surface, and the mechanisms involved in DOM molecular transformation are currently unclear. This study investigated the nonbiological reduction transformation and coupled adsorption of iron oxide minerals in aquifers containing DOM from both macro- and micro perspectives. The results of macroscopic dynamics experiments indicate that DOM can mediate soluble iron release during the reduction of iron oxide minerals, that pH strongly affects DOM removal, and that DOM is more efficiently degraded at low rather than high pH values, suggesting that a low pH is conducive to DOM adsorption and oxidation. Spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (SACTS) indicates that the reacted mineral surfaces are covered with large amounts of carbon and that dynamic agglomeration of iron, carbon, and oxygen occurs. At the nanoscale, three forms of DOM are found in the mineral surface agglomerates (on the surfaces, inside the surface agglomerates, and in the polymer pores). The microscopic organic carbon and iron mineral reaction patterns can form through oxidation reactions and selective adsorption effects. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectra indicate that both synergistic and antagonistic reactions occur between DOM and the minerals, that the release of iron is accompanied by DOM decomposition and humification, that large oxygen- and carbon-containing molecules are broken down into smaller oxygen- and carbon-containing compounds and that more molecules are produced through oxidation under acidic rather than alkaline conditions. These molecules provide adsorption sites for sediment, meaning that more iron can be released. Microscopic evidence for the release of iron was acquired. These results improve the understanding of the geochemical processes affecting iron in groundwater, the nonbiological transformation mechanisms that occur at the interfaces between natural iron minerals and organic matter, groundwater pollution control, and the environmental behavior of pollutants.

Insights into precipitation characteristics and strengthening mechanisms in a low Cu/Mg ratio Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy

Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, a new fully coherent precipitate platelet designated X′′, with a flexible atomic layer FCC structure, was identified in a low Cu/Mg ratio Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy. The emergence of the X′′ phase is primarily attributed to the preferential segregation behavior of Mg and Cu atoms towards the {111}α Ag layers. The strengthening mechanism of the X′′ phase is principally driven by the coherency strengthening, yielding efficient reinforcement (99.8 MPa increment per 1 % volume fraction). After dislocation cutting, the X′′ phase maintains coherence with the matrix, minimizing local strain accumulation at the interface. The mechanical tests show that the alloy with the precipitated X′′ phase, despite its lower strength compared to the alloy with the precipitated Ω phase, exhibits superior ductility and work hardening. The study holds promising implications for designing novel Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloys with a desirable strength-ductility balance.

Mechanistic insight into the catalytic CO oxidation and SO2 resistance over Mo-decorated Pt/TiO2 catalyst: The essential role of Mo

The problem of CO oxidation in incomplete combustion from steel industry is that the deactivation of Pt-based catalysts by SO2. Here, we have elaborately designed a series of Mo-decorated 0.1 wt.% Pt/TiO2 catalyst (Pt/Mo/Ti) catalyst. The catalytic test showed that the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst achieved 100 % CO conversion above 200 °C and maintained excellent long-term catalytic stability in the presence of SO2. The enhancement in SO2-tolerance ability was due to the suitable Brønsted acidity to weaken the SO2 adsorption and strong charge transfer ability to reduce the oxidation of SO2 to SO3. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) suggests that the Pt-O-Mo species are present in atomically dispersed form in the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst. The surface O = MoO4 sites with terminal Mo = O bond prevented SO2 from reacting with platinum, thus inhibiting its migration to TiO2 and TiOSO4 formation. We also revealed the strong interaction between platinum and molybdenum and characterized the CO oxidation pathway in the presence of SO2. This research offers new insights into the mechanism of the catalytic CO oxidation and SO2 resistance over Mo-decorated Pt/TiO2 catalyst.

Atomic-scale characterization of V-shaped interface structure of η1 precipitates in Al–Zn–Mg alloy

Al–Zn–Mg alloys have attracted significant interest in the automotive industry owing to their high strength and light weight. Precipitation hardening is the primary mechanism by which these alloys are strengthened, meaning the analysis of the shape, size, and fraction of the precipitates is crucial. In this study, the interfacial structure of precipitates, which influences the mechanical properties of alloys, was investigated. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the atomic structure of the unique V-shaped interface structure of the η1 precipitates, which are the most prevalent among the η precipitates produced in this alloy. The structure was investigated from an energetic perspective using first-principles calculations, which revealed that the formation of the V-shaped interface structure increased the stability through strain relaxation in both the aluminum matrix and η1. The results provide valuable insights into the formation and growth mechanisms of precipitates, paving the way for further advancements in this field.

Grain refinement of Mg-Ca alloys by native MgO particles

In Mg-Ca alloys the grain refining mechanism, in particular regarding the role of nucleant substrates, remains the object of debates. Although native MgO is being recognised as a nucleating substrate accounting for grain refinement of Mg alloys, the possible interactions of MgO with alloying elements that may alter the nucleation potency have not been elucidated yet. Herein, we design casting experiments of Mg-xCa alloys varied qualitatively in number density of native MgO, which are then comprehensively studied by advanced electron microscopy. The results show that grain refinement is enhanced as the particle number density of MgO increases. The native MgO particles are modified by interfacial layers due to the co-segregation of Ca and N solute atoms at the MgO/Mg interface. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, we reveal the nature of these Ca/N interfacial layers at the atomic scale. Irrespective of the crystallographic termination of MgO, Ca and N co-segregate at the MgO/Mg interface and occupy Mg and O sites, respectively, forming an interfacial structure of a few atomic layers. The interfacial structure is slightly expanded, less ordered and defective compared to the MgO matrix due to compositional deviations, whereby the MgO substrate is altered as a poorer template to nucleate Mg solid. Upon solidification in a TP-1 mould, the impotent MgO particles account for the grain refining mechanism, where they are suggested to participate into nucleation and grain initiation processes in an explosive manner. This work not only reveals the atomic engineering of a substrate through interfacial segregation but also demonstrates the effectiveness of a strategy whereby native MgO particles can be harnessed for grain refinement in Mg-Ca alloys.

Direct in-situ insights into the asymmetric surface reconstruction of rutile TiO2 (110)

The reconstruction of rutile TiO2 (110) holds significant importance as it profoundly influences the surface chemistry and catalytic properties of this widely used material in various applications, from photocatalysis to solar energy conversion. Here, we directly observe the asymmetric surface reconstruction of rutile TiO2 (110)-(1×2) with atomic-resolution using in situ spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Density functional theory calculations were employed to complement the experimental observations. Our findings highlight the pivotal role played by repulsive electrostatic interaction among the small polarons −formed by excess electrons following the removal of neutral oxygen atoms− and the subsequent surface relaxations induced by these polarons. The emergence and disappearance of these asymmetric structures can be controlled by adjusting the oxygen partial pressure. This research provides a deeper understanding, prediction, and manipulation of the surface reconstructions of rutile TiO2 (110), holding implications for a diverse range of applications and technological advancements involving rutile-based materials.

Robust Preparation of Sub-20-nm-Thin Lamellae for Aberration-Corrected Electron Microscopy.

Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been advancing resolution, sensitivity, and microanalysis due to the intense demands of atomic-level microstructural investigations. Recent STEM technologies require preparing a thin lamella whose thickness is ideally below 20 nm. Although focused-ion-beam/scanning-electron-microscopy (FIB/SEM) is an established method to prepare a high-quality lamella, nanometer-level controllability of lamella thickness remains a fundamental problem. Here, the robust preparation of a sub-20-nm-thin lamella is demonstrated by FIB/SEM with real-time feedback from thickness quantification. The lamella thickness is quantified by back-scattered-electron SEM imaging in a thickness range between 0 and 100 nm without any reference to numerical simulation. Using real-time feedback from the thickness quantification, the FIB/SEM terminates thinning a lamella at a targeted thickness. The real-time feedback system eventually provides 1-nm-level controllability of the lamella thickness. As a proof-of-concept, a near-10-nm-thin lamella is prepared from a SrTiO3 crystal by ourmethodology. Moreover, the lamella thickness is controllable at a target heterointerface. Thus, a sub-20-nm-thin lamella is prepared from a LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 heterointerface. The methodology offers a robust and operator-independent platform to prepare a sub-20-nm-thin lamella from various materials. This platform will broadly impact aberration-corrected STEM studies in materials science and the semiconductorindustry.

Structure and Charge Carrier Separation Promotion Effects of Antiphase Boundaries in Cesium Lead Bromide.

Defects in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) may have a significant impact on charge carrier separation, but the roles of the defects are not fully understood. Here, using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), different types of antiphase boundaries (APBs) are discovered in CsPbBr3 platelets. APBs with a displacement vector of 1/4[111] are characterized by double layers of CsBr layers at the (110) or (001) planes, while APBs at the (112) planes are formed through edge sharing of PbBr6 ̵octahedra. Significant lattice distortions are determined at (001) and (110) APBs on the basis of quantitative analyses of STEM images. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that all three types of APBs can induce band offsets at their valence bands and conduction bands. The APBs are intended to promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers in LHPs. These findings provide a crystal engineering technique for enhancing the optoelectronic properties of LHPs by controlling defects.

Imparting Chemiresistor with Humidity-Independent Sensitivity toward Trace-Level Formaldehyde via Substitutional Doping Platinum Single Atom.

The modification of metal oxides with noble metals is one of the most effective means of improving gas-sensing performance of chemiresistors, but it is often accompanied by unintended side effects such as sensor resistance increases up to unmeasurable levels. Herein, a carbonization-oxidation method is demonstrated using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique to realize platinum (Pt) single atom (SA) substitutional doping into SnO2 (named PtSA-SnO2 ). The substitutional doping strategy can obviously enhance gas-sensing properties, and meanwhile decrease sensor resistance by two orders of magnitude (decreased from ≈850 to ≈2 MΩ), which are attributed to the tuning of band gap and fermi-level position, efficient single atom catalysis, and the raising of adsorption capability of formaldehyde, as validated by the state-of-the-art characterizations, such as spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs -corrected STEM), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectra (in situ DRIFT), CO temperature-programmed reduction (CO-TPR), and theoretical calculations. As a proof of concept, the developed PtSA-SnO2 sensor shows humidity-independent (30-70% relative humidity) gas-sensing performance in the selective detection of formaldehyde with high response, distinguishable selectivity (8< Sformaldehyde /Sinterferant <14), and ultra-low detection limit (10 ppb). This work presents a generalized and facile method to design high-performance metal oxides for chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
