Exploration of quantum oscillation in antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal GdSiAl.

GdSiAl single crystal has been investigated by means of magnetic and magneto-transport measurements and compared with ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Significant non-saturating magnetoresistance reaching ∼ 18% at 12T and 2K was observed, alongside the presence of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations with the fundamental frequencies 22.09T and 77.33T. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations provide the information about the nontrivial π Berry phase in GdSiAl with the Fermi surface areas of 0.00211 Å-2and 0.00739 Å-2. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance shows anisotropy with θ, exhibiting a maximum at 180°. The magnetic susceptibility data for H ∥ c and H ⊥ c reveals that the magnetic moments of Gd3+ions orders antiferromagnetically below 32K along with an another transition occurs at ∼ 8K, which is consistent with the heat capacity measurements where a distinct λ-shaped anomaly has been observed near antiferromagnetic ordering temperature 32K. The high value of Debye temperature indicates the contribution of acoustic phonons. Electronic structure calculations suggest the existence of nested Fermi surface pockets characterized by nesting wave vectors that closely align with the observed magnetic ordering wave vector. Furthermore, DFT calculations reveal the presence of Weyl nodes in close proximity to the Fermi surface. Our findings from combined experimental and theoretical techniques indicate GdSiAl to be a potential candidate for an antiferromagnetic topological Weyl semimetal.

A new homologous series of semi-conducting liquid crystals based on phenyl-anthracene: synthesis and effect of the alkyloxy terminal chain on charge transport and photoconductive properties.

π-Conjugated systems are the key to the charge transport properties of organic semiconductors. Four multifunctional mesogenic materials were designed and synthesised from 2-amino anthracene and para-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Each material contains a central, rigid phenyl-anthracene core and one flexible alkyloxy chain with different lengths based on the concept of combining liquid crystal (LC) materials featuring facile processability, highly ordered alignment, and effective charge transport. (E)-N-(Anthracen-2-yl)-1-(4-(alkyloxy)phenyl) methanimine (n-OPIA) with n = 8, 10, 12, and 16 was chemically characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Their thermal behaviours were performed by means of differential scanning calorimetry and polarised optical microscopy and showed differences in mesomorphic behaviours with respect to the alkyloxy chain length. Concerning their frontier molecular energy levels, they were studied by optical spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry and compared to values obtained via ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. LC field-effect transistors (LC-FETs) using a solvent vapour enhanced drop casting based n-OPIA material showed efficient electrical parameters and interesting photoconductive properties, indicating their potential applications in multifunctional integrated devices. As the alkyloxy chain length of the n-OPIA compounds increased, the hole mobility, on/off current ratio, and responsivity decreased. The 8-OPIA homologue exhibits a mobility one order of magnitude larger than the previously studied homologue, namely 10-OPIA.

Exploring structural and optical properties of iodine-doped TiO2 nanoparticles in Rhodamine-B dye degradation: Experimental and theoretical investigation

Energy conversion and pollutant degradation are critical for advancing sustainable technologies, yet they often encounter challenges related to charge recombination and efficiency limitations. This study explores iodine-doped TiO2 nanoparticles as a potential solution for enhancing both energy conversion and pollutant degradation. The nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol-gel method with varying iodine precursor concentrations (0.025–0.1 M) and were characterized for their structural, compositional, and optical properties, particularly in relation to their photocatalytic performance in Rhodamine-B dye degradation. X-ray diffraction confirmed a tetragonal anatase crystal structure, with the average crystallite size decreasing from 10.06 nm to 8.82 nm with increase in iodine concentration. Selected area electron diffraction patterns verified the polycrystalline nature of the nanoparticles. Dynamic light scattering analysis showed hydrodynamic radii ranging from 95 to 125 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy identified metal-oxygen vibrations at 441 cm⁻1, and electron microscopy confirmed the spherical morphology of the nanoparticles. Elemental analysis detected the presence of Ti, O, and I in the samples. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy indicated the optical absorption edges for the doped samples in the visible region from which the corresponding band gap values were deduced. Photoluminescence spectroscopy revealed that the sample with 0.1 M iodine exhibit the lowest emission intensity, suggesting reduced charge recombination. Notably, 0.1 M iodine doped TiO2 samples demonstrated the highest photocatalytic efficiency, achieving 82.36% degradation of Rhodamine-B dye within 140 min under visible light. Additionally, ab-initio density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the structural, optical, and adsorption properties of TiO2, iodine-doped TiO2, Rhodamine-B, and their composites, providing further insight into the enhanced photocatalytic activity observed in the experiments.

Direct Evidence of Reversible Changes in Electrolyte and its Interplay with LiO2 Intermediate in Li-O2 Batteries.

Lithium-oxygen batteries show promising energy storage potential with high theoretical energy density; however, further investigation of chemical reactions is required. In this study, experimental Raman and theoretical analyzes are performed for a Li-O2 battery with LiClO4/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) electrolyte and carbon cathode to understand the role of intermediate species in the reactional mechanism of the cell using a high donor number solvent. Operando Raman results reveal reversible changes in the DMSO bands, in addition to the formation and decomposition of Li2O2. On discharge, a decrease in DMSO polarizability is observed and bands of DMSO-Li+-anion interactions are evidenced and supported by abinitio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Molecular dynamics (MD) force field simulations and operando Raman show that DMSO interacts with LiO2(sol), highlighting the stability of the electrolyte compared to the interaction with reactive . On charging, the presence of Li+ indicates the formation of a lithium-deficient phase, followed by the release of Li+ and oxygen. Therefore, this study contributes to understanding the discharge/charge chemistry of a Li-O2 cell, employing a common carbon cathode and DMSO electrolyte. The combination of a simple characterization technique in operando mode and theoretical studies provides essential information on the mechanism of Li-O2system.

Pyrazolopyrimidine and 4˗pyrimidylpyrazolone analogues as promising novel sulfa drugs: Design, synthesis, antibacterial, antibiofilm, antiquorum agents, computational details and molecular docking studies

In the current study, we aimed at creating novel molecules with a sulfonamide group that can be produced in simple ways. A series of novel N-arylsulfonamide pyrazolopyrimidine 3a,b and 4˗pyrimidylpyrazolone 7a-h derivatives were synthesized by simple and efficient methods. Several spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the structures of the synthesized compounds and confirmed by ab-initio density functional theory calculations in water solvent. The same calculation method was also used to shed light on the reaction mechanisms in terms of thermodynamic concepts. In vitro, all synthetic target compounds were examined using the agar well diffusion method for antibacterial activity. Compounds 7a and 7b exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against 23 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 32 to 256 µg/mL and 16–256 µg/mL, respectively. Both compounds displayed a significant reduction in exopolysaccharide quantity, cell surface hydrophobicity, biofilm formation, and quorum sensing by the tested P. aeruginosa isolates with different percentages. The synthesized compounds were further studied employing molecular docking techniques to predict their binding modes into active site of the target protein. The results show that the investigated compounds exhibit high binding affinities (ca. 10 kcal/mol) toward Pseudomonas aeruginosa PBP3 protein confirming their ability in the treatments of the infections caused by P. aeruginosa bacteria. More future studies are recommended to investigate the activities of these compounds in vivo and in clinical studies.

Local lattice distortions and the structural instabilities in bcc Nb–Ta–Ti–Hf high-entropy alloys: An ab initio computational study

Local lattice distortions (LLD) and structural stability of body-centered cubic (bcc) Nb–Ta–Ti–Hf high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are studied as functions of composition employing ab initio density-functional theory calculations, with specific focus on the role of the relative concentrations of group IV (Ti and Hf) versus group V (Nb and Ta) elements. Calculated results are presented as a function of composition x in NbxTa0.25Ti(0.75−x)/2Hf(0.75−x)/2 alloys, for elastic moduli, phonon spectral functions, LLD and structural energy differences for the bcc and competing hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and ω phases. The results highlight the important role of group V elements and LLD in stabilizing the bcc structure. They further reveal how composition x can be tuned to alter both the magnitude of the LLD and structural energy differences. Specifically, the magnitude of the structural energy differences, and elastic and dynamic stability of the bcc phase, are enhanced with increasing x, while the LLD increase in magnitude as this concentration is decreased. The results also show evidence of correlated LLD at lower values of x, reflecting local structural distortions towards the ω phase, but not hcp. The degree of ω-collapse is nevertheless partial i.e., transformation towards this phase is not observed to be complete due to the presence of Ta and Nb. At lower values of x we further find an energy landscape characterized by multiple, nearly degenerate local energy minima for different values of the LLD.

High-harmonic spectroscopy of low-energy electron-scattering dynamics in liquids

High-harmonic spectroscopy is an all-optical nonlinear technique with inherent attosecond temporal resolution. It has been applied to a variety of systems in the gas phase and solid state. Here we extend its use to liquid samples. By studying high-harmonic generation over a broad range of wavelengths and intensities, we show that the cut-off energy is independent of the wavelength beyond a threshold intensity and that it is a characteristic property of the studied liquid. We explain these observations with a semi-classical model based on electron trajectories that are limited by the electron scattering. This is further confirmed by measurements performed with elliptically polarized light and with ab-initio time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Our results propose high-harmonic spectroscopy as an all-optical approach for determining the effective mean free paths of slow electrons in liquids. This regime is extremely difficult to access with other methodologies, but is critical for understanding radiation damage to living tissues. Our work also indicates the possibility of resolving subfemtosecond electron dynamics in liquids offering an all-optical approach to attosecond spectroscopy of chemical processes in their native liquid environment.

Comprehensive theoretical studies of Sn and Ti doping induced modulation in electronic and optical properties of Na2ZnP2O7 compounds using GGA + U approach

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of the optical properties in Na2ZnP2O7 host matrix doped with Ti and Sn ions. Employing ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the influence of dopants on host matrix properties are evaluated. We utilize the GGA functional for structural and energetic insights, while GGA + U is employed to elucidate structural, electronic, and optical characteristics. The feasibility of Ti and Sn doped Na2ZnP2O7 is shown based on the formation energy. Intriguing electronic and optical features emerge within the Na2ZnP2O7 electronic band gap due to Ti and Sn dopants, resulting in the modifications to band structure and dielectric functions. The current investigation highlights Sn-doped Na2ZnP2O7 nonmagnetic nature and Ti-doped Na2ZnP2O7 ferromagnetic character. These findings provide valuable insights into the influence of dopant atoms in diphosphate compounds and offer significant implications for the development of novel and efficient luminescent materials.

Dynamic and static insights on the interaction mechanism between heavy metal contaminants in MSW incineration flue gas and modified carbon materials: Aggregation of PbO and CdO

Clarifying the interaction mechanism between heavy metals and adsorbent is the foundation to trigger the efficiency upgrades of adsorption technology. However, the existing studies ignore the coupling effect between heavy metal pollutants, which leads to a mismatch between theory and practice. Ab-initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations are combined to uncover the dynamical interactions of mixed Pb/Cd species over the transition metal-modified carbon materials (CMs), discovering a new mechanism for enhanced heavy metal removal. Among various mixtures, PbO/CdO generates a stable and compact quadrilateral structure, greatly favorable for the nucleation and agglomeration of gas-phase heavy metals. According to the bond length tracking and electronic analyses, PbO plays an aggregating role and CdO plays a stabilizing role, resulting in dynamic stabilization of the tetragonal aggregates. Due to the different charge transfer and hybridization strengths between the surface-active sites and aggregates, the aggregates can only be stably trapped by Fe-modified CM. In addition, the Fe-modified CM exhibits excellent aggregation properties in the wide temperature region and in the low molecular environment. Overall, Fe-modified CM achieves synergistic removal of PbO and CdO, accommodating the environment of wide temperatures and low heavy metal concentrations, which provides an inspiration for the adsorbent design.

Cs2TiI6 (Cs2TiIxBr6-x) Halide Perovskite Solar Cell and Its Point Defect Analysis.

This work presents a comprehensive numerical study for designing a lead-free, all-inorganic, and high-performance solar cell based on Cs2TiI6 halide perovskite with all-inorganic carrier transport layers. A rigorous ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) calculation is performed to identify the electronic and optical properties of Cs2TiI6 and, upon extraction of the existing experimental data of the material, the cell is designed and optimized to the degree of practical feasibility. Consequently, a theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.17% is reported with inorganic TiO2 and CuI as carrier transport layers. The calculated absorption coefficient of Cs2TiI6 reveals its enormous potential as an alternative low-bandgap material for different solar cell applications. Furthermore, the role of different point defects and the corresponding defect densities on cell performance are investigated. It is found that the possible point defects in Cs2TiI6 can form both the shallow and deep defect states, with deep defect states having a prominent effect on cell performance. For both defect states, the cell performance deteriorates significantly as the defect density increases, which signifies the importance of high-quality material processing for the success of Cs2TiI6-based perovskite solar cell technology.

Formation mechanism of mirror twin grain boundaries in molecular beam epitaxy grown monolayer WSe2–MoSe2 lateral heterojunctions

Mirror twin grain boundary (MTB) defects, being a special type of high-symmetry one-dimensional (1D) defects in two-dimensional atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), have received considerable interest due to their unique structures and intriguing 1D properties. However, formation and distribution of MTBs in hybrid TMDC materials such as heterojunction remain scarcely studied. Herein, we investigate the spatial distribution, lattice registry and formation mechanism of MTBs in molecular beam epitaxy grown monolayer WSe2–MoSe2 lateral heterojunctions using atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM). MTBs manifest a much higher density in MoSe2 than in WSe2 domains with a few of them spanning coherently across the domain interface. Compositionally, a Mo-dominant rather than W-dominant configuration was observed in those MTBs located in WSe2 domains and its origin can be attributed to the preferable Mo substitution to W along the MTBs occurring at the later MoSe2 growth period. This proposed mechanism is supported by ab-initio density functional theory calculations and substitution dynamics captured by in-situ ADF-STEM. The present study deepens our understanding of MTBs in heterostructured TMDCs, which may also serve as an excellent platform for the exploration of intriguing 1D physics.

Experimental and theoretical study of synthesis and properties of Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction for photoelectrochemical purposes

The Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction is an attractive surface for its optoelectronic properties for developing catalysts, cells, and solar devices. However, the mechanisms involved in synthesizing an electrode using the Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction can affect the surface properties and the surface/electrolyte interactions. In this work, we studied the formation mechanism of the Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction by electrochemical deposition (ECD) of Cu2O molecules on TiO2 nanoparticles previously deposited on a fluorine-doped thin oxide coated glass substrate (FTO). The photoelectrochemical properties of the Cu2O/TiO2/FTO electrode were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. Theoretical methods such as ab-initio density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations were used to understand the experimental results. The analysis carried out by theoretical methods allowed us to identify the initial steps of the formation mechanism of Cu2O molecules on TiO2 nanoparticles. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that forming a Cu2O nanowire-like network on the TiO2 nanoparticle matrix favors the charge transfer at the electrolyte/semiconductor interface, promoting the behavior of the electrode as a cathode. Finally, the Cu2O/TiO2/FTO electrode synthesized was used to perform the reduction photoelectrocatalyzed of nitrate to ammonia under illumination with a Xe-Hg arc lamp and applying −0.5 V bias potential (vs Ag/AgCl sat.) to evaluate the performance of the electrode as a cathode.

Monovacancy-hydrogen interaction in pure aluminum: Experimental and ab-initio theoretical positron annihilation study

We report here on hydrogen-vacancy interactions in high purity aluminum by employing positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) analysis of hydrogen-loaded samples, aiming to study the mobility of vacancies. The samples were heat treated at 893 K in an atmosphere consisting of a mixture of H2 and Ar gas and, thus, loaded with hydrogen. The samples were then quenched to ice water and subsequently measured in-situ at different temperatures. In parallel we performed ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of lifetimes of positrons trapped in vacancies associated with 1–8 H atoms. Our experimental results suggest in comparison with the ab-initio calculations that complexes of vacancies with one hydrogen atom (V-H pairs) were formed in Al samples annealed in a mixture of H2 and Ar gas. Furthermore, hydrogen absorbed in aluminum immobilizes vacancies, i.e. the recovery of vacancies is delayed from 220 K up to around 280 K. At that temperature, V-H complexes start to dissociate, and hydrogen atoms previously bound to vacancies are released. In contrast, for Al samples not loaded with hydrogen isolated monovacancies become mobile around 220 K. In both cases mobile vacancies start to form vacancy clusters. From our experimental data we determined that the formation energy of monovacancies in Al is 0.62 ± 0.01 eV. This value is in very good agreement with 0.63 eV obtained by our ab-initio DFT calculations.

Development of a ReaxFF potential for Au–Pd

The bimetallic alloys often outperform their single-component counterparts due to synergistic effects. Being widely known, the Au–Pd alloy is a promising candidate for the novel heterogeneous nanocatalysts. Rational design of such systems requires theoretical simulations under ambient conditions. Ab initio quantum-mechanical calculations employ the density functional theory (DFT) and are limited to the systems with few tens of atoms and short timescales. The alternative solution implies development of reliable atomistic potentials. Among different approaches ReaxFF combines chemical accuracy and low computational costs. However, the development of a new potential is a problem without unique solution and thus requires accurate validation criteria. In this work we construct ReaxFF potential for the Au–Pd system based on ab initio DFT calculations for bulk structures, slabs and nanoparticles with different stoichiometry. The validation was performed with molecular dynamics and Monte-Carlo calculations. We present several optimal parametrizations that describe experimental bulk mechanical and thermal properties, atomic order-disorder phase transition temperatures and the resulting ordered crystal structures.

Rashba-induced spin texture and spin-layer-locking effects in the antiferromagnetic CrI3 bilayer

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) CrI3 bilayer is a particularly interesting representative of van der Waals 2D semiconductors, which are currently being studied for their magnetism and for their potential in spintronics. Using ab initio density-functional theory calculations, we investigate the spin texture in momentum space of the states of the (doubly degenerate) highest valence band of the AFM CrI3 bilayer with Cr-spin moments perpendicular to the layers. We find the existence, in the main central part of the Brillouin zone, of a Rashba in-plane spin texture of opposite signs on the two layers, resulting from the intrinsic local electric fields acting on each layer. To study the layer segregation of the wavefunctions, we apply a small electric field that splits the degenerate states according to their layer occupancy. We find that the wavefunctions of the highest valence band are layer-segregated, belonging to only one of the two layers with opposite in-plane spin textures, and the segregation occurs over nearly the whole Brillouin zone. The corresponding layer locking of the in-plane-canted spin is related to the separation in energy of the highest AFM band from the rest of the valence bands. We explain how the band interactions destroy the layer locking at the K, K′, and Γ points. Furthermore, we compare the layer locking of the in-plane-canted spin in our AFM bilayer system with the hidden spin polarization in centrosymmetric nonmagnetic materials, pointing out the differences in segregation mechanisms and their consequences for the layer locking. We note that a similar Rashba effect with layer locking of in-plane-canted spin could occur in other van der Waals AFM bilayers with strong spin–orbit coupling and an isolated energy band.

Combined experimental and theoretical study of hydrostatic He-gas pressure effects in α−RuCl3

We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and magnetic aspects of the layered honeycomb antiferromagent $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements performed under almost ideal hydrostatic-pressure conditions yield that the phase transition to zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 7.3 K can be rapidly suppressed to about 6.1 K. A further suppression with increasing pressure is impeded due to the occurrence of a pressure-induced structural transition at $p \geq$ 104 MPa, accompanied by a strong dimerization of Ru-Ru bonds, which gives rise to a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Whereas the dimerization transition is strongly first order, as reflected by large discontinuous changes in $\chi$ and pronounced hysteresis effects, the magnetic transition under varying pressure and magnetic field also reveals indications for a weakly first-order transition. We assign this observation to a strong magnetoelastic coupling in this system. Measurements of $\chi$ under varying pressure in the paramagnetic regime ($T > T_N$) and before dimerization ($p <$ 100 MPa) reveal a considerable increase of $\chi$ with pressure. These experimental observations are consistent with the results of ab-initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the pressure-dependent structure and the corresponding pressure-dependent magnetic model. Comparative susceptibility measurements on a second crystal showing two consecutive magnetic transitions instead of one, indicating the influence of stacking faults. Using different temperature-pressure protocols the effect of these stacking faults can be temporarily overcome, transforming the magnetic state from a multiple-$T_N$ into a single-$T_N$ state.

Knee structure in the laser-intensity dependence of harmonic generation for graphene

We investigate the high-order harmonic generations (HHGs) of graphene irradiated by linearly polarized lasers with intensities in a wide range from $10^{8}$ W/cm$^2$ to $10^{13}$ W/cm$^2$. We find a striking knee structure in the laser intensity dependence of HHGs, which consists of a linear growth regime, followed by a plateau of the saturated HHGs, and then a transition to a nonlinear growth. The knee structure is rather universal for the varied harmonic orders and has been certificated by the calculations of two-band density-matrix equations as well as the \textit{ab initio} calculations of time-dependent density functional theory. Based on the two-band model, we reveal the underlying mechanisms: The behavior of linear growth can be depicted analytically by the perturbative theory of optical conductivity; While, the plateau of saturated HHGs and the transition to a nonlinear growth are caused by the quantum destructive interference and constructive interference of harmonics generated by the electrons corresponding to the lattice momentums around Dirac points and M points in Brillouin zone, respectively. In particular, we find that tuning Fermi energy can effectively alter the knee structure while the profile of the knee structure is not sensitive to the temperature. Our calculations of the third-order harmonic vs. tuning Fermi energy are compared with recent experiment showing a good agreement. Our predicted knee structure and its associated properties are observable with the current experimental techniques.

Experimental and DFT studies on spinel NiMn2O4 flower derived from bimetallic MOF as an efficient electrode for next-generation supercapacitor

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) have recently emerged as an intriguing template for developing morphologically pre-designed metal oxide nanostructures. MOFs offer excellent control over morphology, extremely high porosity and large surface area, which is highly beneficial for supercapacitor electrode applications. We report the synthesis of bimetallic MOF-derived Nickel Manganese oxide for an electrode in supercapacitor by an efficient solvothermal and subsequent calcination route. The physical characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Bruner-Emmert-Teller (BET). We performed the cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronopotentiometry (CP), and electronic impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test in a 1 M KOH electrolyte to examine the electrochemical characteristics of the prepared samples. NiMn2O4 electrode material revealed high specific capacitance of 1387 F/g at 1 A/g current density and prominent cycle life (80% capacitance retention after 6500 cycles) and the porous structure of the material has a good BET surface area of 84.3 m2/g. Further, we performed spin-polarized ab-initio density functional theory calculations to study the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the spinel NiMn2O4 structure. Our calculated results are close to the experimentally determined structural parameters, and the enthalpy of formation confirms the thermodynamical stability of the spinel structure with ΔHF = −1.6 eV/atom. The orbital projected electronic structure is further investigated to understand the contribution of elements near the Fermi region, which paves the way for further understanding of the distribution of electrons at a particular energy interval of our system. The present findings will aid in fabricating the bimetallic MOF-derived metal oxide nanostructures for the next-generation supercapacitors.

Spectroscopic investigations, ab-initio DFT calculations, molecular docking and in-vitro assay studies of novel oxovanadium(V)chalcone complexes as potential antidiabetic agents

A series of four novel oxovanadium(V)chalcone complexes ([VO(LI-IV)2Cl]; where HLI=1-(2-Hydroxy-phenyl)-3-phenyl-propenone, HLII=1-(1-Hydroxy-naphthalen-2-yl)-3-phenyl-propenone, HLIII = 1-(2-Amino-phenyl)-3-phenyl-propenone, HLIV = 4-Hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(3-phenyl-acryloyl)-pyran-2-one) were designed and synthesized by performing chemical reaction between VOCl3 and respective chalcone derivatives in 1:2 molar ratio. Their formation as well as chemical structures were confirmed by FTIR, UV-Visible, 1H-NMR, SEM, EDS, and mass spectrometry spectroscopic techniques. The geometry of the synthesized complexes was purposed to be octahedral on the basis of the characterization. Further computational and structural parameters of the synthesized complexes were determined in order to establish their thermodynamic stability/chemical reactivity of the synthesized complexes. Density Functional Theory (DFT) method was employed to calculate the molecular geometry and vibrational frequencies of the synthesized complexes using B3LYP hybrid functional at 6-31G* level of basis set. Further, Spartan'20 V1.0.0 program package was used to calculate the 1H-NMR spectra with (DFT/ B3LYP) in the gaseous phase to validate the structure of oxovanadium(V) complexes. The experimentally obtained results were found to be well correlated with theoretical results with a correlation value > 0.96. Global reactivity descriptors helps to explain the bioactivity of complexes hence, were calculated from the HOMO-LUMO energies. The enzymatic assay experiments indicated that all the four synthesized complexes have significant to moderate inhibition potential against α-glucosidase, and α-amylase enzymes. Among all the oxovanadium(V)chalcone complexes, complex 4showed excellent and superior inhibition potency almost equivalent to the commercially available Acarbose drug and even better in case of α-amylase. The observed IC50 value of complex 4 for the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase was calculated to be 16.36 µg/mL and 57.27 µg/mL, respectively. The Kinetic parameters calculated from the Lineweaver-Burk plot showed that complex 4 were uncompetitive and mixed inhibitor of α-amylase and α-glucosidase respectively. Thereafter,the antiradical activity of synthesized vanadium(V)chalcone complexes was assessed with the help of DPPH radical scavenging assay. The results demonstrated that all the complexes were remarkable free radical scavengers for the DPPH. The complex 1 was observed to be best among them with the 0.03 µg/mL IC50 value. The AutoDockTools-1.5.6 software was used to examine structure-activity relationship and the binding interactions between oxovanadium(V) complexes and protein target alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase, and Myeloperoxidase respectively. The in-vitro as well as in-silico biological activity studies showed significant and major improvements after complexation of chalcone derivatives with vanadium oxychloride (VOCl3). Thus, oxovanadium(V)chalcone complexes were found to be potent inhibitors of the α-glucosidase and α-amylase enzyme.

High-entropy transition metal nitride thin films alloyed with Al: Microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties

Deviation from equimolar composition in high-entropy multielement ceramics offers a possibility of fine-tuning the materials’ properties for targeted application. Here, we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study on the effects of alloying equimolar pentanary (TiHfNbVZr)N and hexanary (TiHfNbVZrTa)N high-entropy nitrides with Al. Although being predicted to be metastable by ab initio density-functional theory calculations, single-phase fcc NaCl-structured solid solution thin films with Al solubility limits as high as x ∼ 0.51–0.61 in (TiHfNbVZr)1-xAlxN and x ∼ 0.45–0.64 in (TiHfNbVZrTa)1-xAlxN are synthesised utilizing a hybrid deposition technique that offers dynamic mixing of film atoms from Al+ subplantation and non-equilibrium growth conditions leading to quenching of the desired film structure. In experimental studies supplemented with density-functional theory calculations, it is demonstrated that Al concentration in alloys with the multielement compositions of high-entropy nitride thin films determine hardness, yield strength, toughness, and ability to deform plastically up to fracture due to different deformation mechanisms arising from the electronic structure and phase compositions.
