Intrinsic Color Indices of Early-type Dwarf Stars

Abstract Early-type stars are short lived and scarce in comparison with other types. Based on the recently released catalogs of early-type stars from the largest Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope spectroscopic survey, the intrinsic colors of the stars with effective temperature up to 32,000 K are determined for the bands from ultraviolet to infrared using the blue-edge method. Analytic relations are derived for the intrinsic color index with the effective temperature for the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, Two Micron All Sky Survey, Gaia, AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System 1, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer bands. The results are generally consistent with previous works. In addition, the intrinsic colors of O-type dwarfs and OB supergiants are roughly estimated.

The ASAS-SN catalogue of variable stars – V. Variables in the Southern hemisphere

ABSTRACT The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) provides long baseline (∼4 yr) light curves for sources brighter than V ≲ 17 mag across the whole sky. As part of our effort to characterize the variability of all the stellar sources visible in ASAS-SN, we have produced ∼30.1 million V-band light curves for sources in the Southern hemisphere using the APASS DR9 (AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey Data Release) catalogue as our input source list. We have systematically searched these sources for variability using a pipeline based on random forest classifiers. We have identified ${\sim } 220\, 000$ variables, including ${\sim } 88\, 300$ new discoveries. In particular, we have discovered ${\sim }48\, 000$ red pulsating variables, ${\sim }23\, 000$ eclipsing binaries, ∼2200 δ-Scuti variables, and ${\sim }10\, 200$ rotational variables. The light curves and characteristics of the variables are all available through the ASAS-SN variable stars data base (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/variables). The pre-computed ASAS-SN V-band light curves for all the ∼30.1 million sources are available through the ASAS-SN photometry data base (https://asas-sn.osu.edu/photometry). This effort will be extended to provide ASAS-SN light curves for sources in the Northern hemisphere and for V ≲ 17 mag sources across the whole sky that are not included in APASS DR9.

URAT South Parallax Results

Abstract We present 916 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of newly discovered nearby stars from the United States Naval Observatory Robotic Astrometric Telescope (URAT). Observations were taken at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory over a 2-year period from 2015 to 2017 October covering the entire sky south of about +25° decl. SPM4 and UCAC4 early epoch catalog data were added to extend the temporal coverage for the parallax and proper motion fit up to 48 years. Using these new URAT parallaxes, optical and near-IR photometry from the AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey and Two Micron All-Sky Survey catalogs, we identify possible new nearby dwarfs, young stars, low-metallicity subdwarfs and white dwarfs. Comparison to known trigonometric parallaxes shows a high quality of the URAT-based results confirming the error in parallax of the URAT south parallaxes reported here to be between 2 and 13 mas. We also include additional 729 trigonometric parallaxes from the URAT north 25 pc sample published in Finch & Zacharias here after applying the same criterion as for the southern sample to have a complete URAT 25 pc sample presented in this paper.

Binary companions of nearby supernova remnants found withGaia

We search for runaway former companions of the progenitors of nearby Galactic core-collapse supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS). We look for candidates for a sample of ten SNRs with distances less than $2\;\mathrm{kpc}$, taking astrometry and $G$ magnitude from TGAS and $B,V$ magnitudes from the AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey (APASS). A simple method of tracking back stars and finding the closest point to the SNR centre is shown to have several failings when ranking candidates. In particular, it neglects our expectation that massive stars preferentially have massive companions. We evolve a grid of binary stars to exploit these covariances in the distribution of runaway star properties in colour - magnitude - ejection velocity space. We construct an analytic model which predicts the properties of a runaway star, in which the model parameters are the properties of the progenitor binary and the properties of the SNR. Using nested sampling we calculate the Bayesian evidence for each candidate to be the runaway and simultaneously constrain the properties of that runaway and of the SNR itself. We identify four likely runaway companions of the Cygnus Loop, HB 21, S147 and the Monoceros Loop. HD 37424 has previously been suggested as the companion of S147, however the other three stars are new candidates. The favoured companion of HB 21 is the Be star BD+50 3188 whose emission-line features could be explained by pre-supernova mass transfer from the primary. There is a small probability that the $2\;\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ candidate runaway TYC 2688-1556-1 associated with the Cygnus Loop is a hypervelocity star. If the Monoceros Loop is related to the on-going star formation in the Mon OB2 association, the progenitor of the Monoceros Loop is required to be more massive than $40\;\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ which is in tension with the posterior for HD 261393.

The Pristine survey II: A sample of bright stars observed with FEROS

Extremely metal‐poor (EMP) stars are old objects formed in the first Gyr of the Universe. They are rare and, to select them the most successful strategy has been to build on large and low‐resolution spectroscopic surveys. The combination of narrow‐ and broad‐band photometry provides a powerful and cheaper alternative to select metal‐poor stars. The ongoing Pristine Survey is adopting this strategy, conducting photometry with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope MegaCam wide‐field imager and a narrow‐band filter centered at 395.2 nm on the Ca II‐H and ‐K lines. In this paper, we present the results of the spectroscopic follow‐up conducted on a sample of 26 stars at the bright end of the magnitude range of the Survey (g⩽15), using FEROS at the MPG/ESO 2.2‐m telescope (manufactured by Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany). From our chemical investigation on the sample, we conclude that this magnitude range is too bright to use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) gri bands, which are typically saturated. Instead, the Pristine photometry can be usefully combined with the AAVSO Photometric All Sky Survey (APASS) griphotometry to provide reliable metallicity estimates.

Using APASS and 2GSS for studying variable stars

The AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey (APASS) provides calibrated magnitudes in the range 7 Y bandpasses. While primarily designed for 0.02 mag calibration, it provides photometry over a many-year baseline, and also has near daily cadence in the standard field regions on the equator. Likewise, the Second Generation Synoptic Survey (2GSS) is a follow-on to APASS, and will provide daily cadence in two passbands for the entire sky.

UCAC4 NEARBY STAR SURVEY: A SEARCH FOR OUR STELLAR NEIGHBORS

We use data from the U.S. Naval Observatory fourth CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC4) in combination with photometry from the AAVSO Photometric All-Sky Survey (APASS) and Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) to identify stars within 25 pc of the Sun. A sample of nearby stars with accurate trigonometric parallaxes from the Research Consortium On Nearby Stars (RECONS) is used to generate a set of 16 new photometric color-$M_{K{_s}}$ relations that provide distance estimates with uncertainties of 15\%. This work expands the available suites of well-calibrated photometric distance relations that can be used to identify nearby stellar systems. The distance relations are used with quality cuts to extract an initial sample of stars from the UCAC4 estimated to be within 25 pc. Color, proper motion and existing literature sources are then used to obtain a clean sample of red dwarfs, while limiting the amount of contamination from background giants, resulting in a sample of 1761 candidate nearby stars within 25 pc. Of these, 339 are new discoveries with no previously known published parallax or distance estimate, primarily with proper motions less than 0.2 arcsec/year. Five stars are estimated to be within 10 pc, with the nearest, TYC 3980 1081 1 with V$=$ 10.50, estimated to be at 5.93 pc. That several hundred new stars have been revealed so close to the Sun illustrates once again that there is considerable work yet to be done to map the solar neighborhood, and that additional nearby stars are likely still to be discovered.
