Probing Na in giant exoplanets with ESPRESSO and 3D NLTE stellar spectra

Neutral sodium was the first atom that was detected in an exoplanetary atmosphere using the transmission spectroscopy technique. To date, it remains the most successfully detected species due to its strong doublet in the optical at 5890\ A and 5896\ A . However, the center-to-limb variation (CLV) of these lines in the host star can bias the Na I detection. When combined with the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, the CLV can mimic or obscure a planetary absorption feature if it is not properly accounted for. This work aims to investigate the impact of three-dimensional (3D) radiation hydrodynamic stellar atmospheres and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer on the modeling of the CLV+RM effect in single-line transmission spectroscopy to improve the detection and characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. We produced a grid of 3D NLTE synthetic spectra for Na I for FGK-type dwarfs within the following parameter space: $T_ eff =4500-6500$\,K, $ g =4.0-5.0$, and Fe/H . This grid was then interpolated to match the stellar parameters of four stars hosting well-known giant exoplanets, generating stellar spectra to correct for the CLV+RM effect in their transmission spectra. We used archival observations taken with the high-resolution ESPRESSO spectrograph. Our work confirms the Na I detections in three systems, namely WASP-52b, WASP-76b, and WASP-127b, also improving the accuracy of the measured absorption depth. Furthermore, we find that 3D NLTE stellar models can explain the spectral features in the transmission spectra of HD 209458b without the need for any planetary absorption. In the grid of stellar synthetic spectra, we observe that the CLV effect is stronger for stars with low $T_ eff $ and high $ g$. However, the combined effect of CLV and RM is highly dependent on the orbital geometry of the planet-star system. With the continuous improvement of instrumentation, it is crucial to use the most accurate stellar models available to correct for the CLV+RM effect in high-resolution transmission spectra to achieve the best possible characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. This will be fundamental in preparation for instruments such as ANDES at the Extremely Large Telescope to fully exploit its capabilities in the near future. We make our grid of 3D NLTE synthetic spectra for Na I publicly available.

Diagnostics of 3D explosion asymmetries of stripped-envelope supernovae by nebular line profiles

ABSTRACT Understanding the explosion mechanism and hydrodynamic evolution of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is a long-standing quest in astronomy. The asymmetries caused by the explosion are encoded into the line profiles which appear in the nebular phase of the SN evolution – with particularly clean imprints in He star explosions. Here, we carry out nine different supernova simulations of He-core progenitors, exploding them in 3D with parametrically varied neutrino luminosities using the prometheus-hotb code, hydrodynamically evolving the models to the homologous phase. We then compute nebular phase spectra with the 3D Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium spectral synthesis code extrass (EXplosive TRAnsient Spectral Simulator). We study how line widths and shifts depend on progenitor mass, explosion energy, and viewing angle. We compare the predicted line profile properties against a large set of Type Ib observations, and discuss the degree to which current neutrino-driven explosions can match observationally inferred asymmetries. With self-consistent 3D modelling – circumventing the difficulties of representing $^{56}$Ni mixing and clumping accurately in 1D models – we find that neither low-mass He cores exploding with high energies nor high-mass cores exploding with low energies contribute to the Type Ib SN population. Models which have line profile widths in agreement with this population give sufficiently large centroid shifts for calcium emission lines. Calcium is more strongly affected by explosion asymmetries connected to the neutron star kicks than oxygen and magnesium. Lastly, we turn to the near-infrared spectra from our models to investigate the potential of using this regime to look for the presence of He in the nebular phase.

M3DIS - A grid of 3D radiation-hydrodynamics stellar atmosphere models for stellar surveys. I. Procedure, validation, and the Sun

Large-scale stellar surveys, such as SDSS-V, 4MOST, WEAVE, and PLATO, require accurate atmospheric models and synthetic spectra of stars for accurate analyses of fundamental stellar parameters and chemical abundances. The primary goal of our work is to develop a new approach to solve radiation-hydrodynamics (RHD) and generate model stellar spectra in a self-consistent and highly efficient framework. We build upon the Copenhagen legacy RHD code, the MULTI3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) code, and the DISPATCH high-performance framework. The new approach allows us to calculate 3D RHD models of stellar atmospheres on timescales of a few thousand CPU hours and to perform subsequent spectrum synthesis in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) or NLTE for the desired physical conditions within the parameter space of FGK-type stars. We compare the 3D RHD solar model with other available models and validate its performance against solar observations, including the centre-to-limb variation of intensities and key solar diagnostic lines of H and Fe. We show that the performance of the new code allows to overcome the main bottleneck in 3D NLTE spectroscopy and enables calculations of multi-dimensional grids of synthetic stellar observables for comparison with modern astronomical observations.

The evolution of continuum polarization in type II supernovae as a diagnostic of ejecta morphology

The linear polarization of the optical continuum of type II supernovae (SNe), together with its temporal evolution is a promising source of information about the large-scale geometry of their ejecta. To help access this information, we undertook 2D polarized radiative transfer calculations to map the possible landscape of type II SN continuum polarization (Pcont) from 20 to 300 days after explosion. Our simulations were based on crafted 2D axisymmetric ejecta constructed from 1D nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium time-dependent radiative transfer calculations for the explosion of a red supergiant star. Following the approach used in our previous work on SN 2012aw, we considered a variety of bipolar explosions in which spherical symmetry is broken by material within ~30° of the poles that has a higher kinetic energy (up to a factor of two) and higher 56Ni abundance (up to a factor of about five, allowing for 56Ni at high velocity). Our set of eight 2D ejecta configurations produced considerable diversity in Pcont (λ ~ 7000 Å), although its maximum of 1–4% systematically occurs around the transition to the nebular phase. Before and after this transition, Pcont may be null, constant, rising, or decreasing, which is caused by the complex geometry of the depth-dependent density and ionization and also by optical depth effects. Our modest angle-dependent explosion energy can yield a Pcont of 0.5–1% at early times. Residual optical-depth effects can yield an angle-dependent SN brightness and constant polarization at nebular times. The observed values of Pcont tend to be lower than obtained here. This suggests that more complicated geometries with competing large-scale structures cancel the polarization. Extreme asymmetries seem to be excluded.

Searching for NLTE effects in the high-resolution transmission spectrum of WASP-121 b with cloudy for exoplanets

ABSTRACT Ultrahot Jupiters (UHJs) undergo intense irradiation by their host stars and are expected to experience non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects in their atmospheres. Such effects are computationally intensive to model but, at the low pressures probed by high-resolution cross-correlation spectroscopy (HRCCS), can significantly impact the formation of spectral lines. The UHJ WASP-121 b exhibits a highly inflated atmosphere, making it ideal for investigating the impact of NLTE effects on its transmission spectrum. Here, we formally introduce cloudy for exoplanets, a cloudy-based modelling code, and use it to generate 1D LTE and NLTE atmospheric models and spectra to analyse archival HARPS WASP-121 b transmission spectra. We assessed the models using two HRCCS methods: (i) Pearson cross-correlation, and (ii) a method that aims to match the average observed line depth for given atmospheric species. All models result in strong detections of Fe i (7.5 < S/N < 10.5). However, the highest S/N model (LTE) does not agree with the best-matching model of the average line depth (NLTE). We also find degeneracy, such that increasing the isothermal temperature and metallicity of the LTE models can produce average line depths similar to cooler, less metal rich NLTE models. Thus, we are unable to conclusively remark on the presence of NLTE effects in the atmosphere of WASP-121 b. We instead highlight the need for standardized metrics in HRCCS that enable robust statistical assessment of complex physical models, e.g. NLTE or 3D effects, that are currently too computationally intensive to include in HRCCS atmospheric retrievals.

3D NLTE Lithium abundances for late-type stars in GALAH DR3

ABSTRACT Lithium’s susceptibility to burning in stellar interiors makes it an invaluable tracer for delineating the evolutionary pathways of stars, offering insights into the processes governing their development. Observationally, the complex Li production and depletion mechanisms in stars manifest themselves as Li plateaus, and as Li-enhanced and Li-depleted regions of the HR diagram. The Li-dip represents a narrow range in effective temperature close to the main-sequence turn-off, where stars have slightly super-solar masses and strongly depleted Li. To study the modification of Li through stellar evolution, we measure 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) Li abundance for 581 149 stars released in GALAH DR3. We describe a novel method that fits the observed spectra using a combination of 3D NLTE Li line profiles with blending metal-line strength that are optimized on a star-by-star basis. Furthermore, realistic errors are determined by a Monte Carlo nested sampling algorithm which samples the posterior distribution of the fitted spectral parameters. The method is validated by recovering parameters from a synthetic spectrum and comparing to 26 stars in the Hypatia catalogue. We find 228 613 Li detections, and 352 536 Li upper limits. Our abundance measurements are generally lower than GALAH DR3, with a mean difference of 0.23 dex. For the first time, we trace the evolution of Li-dip stars beyond the main sequence turn-off and up the subgiant branch. This is the first 3D NLTE analysis of Li applied to a large spectroscopic survey, and opens up a new era of precision analysis of abundances for large surveys.

Mg II h&k fine structure prominence modelling and the consequences for observations

Aims. Using 2D Mg II h&k solar prominence modelling, our aim is to understand the formation of complex line profiles and how these are seen by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Additionally, we see how the properties of these simulated observations are interpreted through the use of traditional 1D prominence modelling. Methods. We used a cylindrical non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) 2D complete redistribution (CRD) code to generate a set of cylindrical prominence strands, which we stacked behind each other to produce complex line profiles. Then, with the use of the point spread functions (PSFs) of IRIS, we were able to predict how IRIS would observe these line profiles. We then used the 1D NLTE code PROM in combination with the Cross Root Mean Square method (xRMS) to find the properties recovered by traditional 1D prominence modelling. Results. Velocities of magnitude lower than 10 km s−1 are sufficient to produce asymmetries in the Mg II h&k lines. However, convolution of these with the PSFs of IRIS obscures this detail and returns standard looking single peaks. By increasing the velocities by a factor of three, we recover asymmetric profiles even after this convolution. The properties recovered by xRMS appear adequate at first, but the line profiles chosen to fit these profiles do not satisfactorily represent the line profiles. This is likely due to the large line width of the simulated profiles. Conclusions. Asymmetries can be introduced by multithread models with independent Doppler velocities. The large line width created by these models makes it difficult for traditional 1D forward modelling to find good matches. This may also demonstrate degeneracies in the solution recovered by single-species 1D modelling.

Modeling of the nebular-phase spectral evolution of stripped-envelope supernovae

We present an extended grid of multi-epoch 1D nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer calculations for nebular-phase Type Ibc supernovae (SNe) from He-star explosions. Compared to our previous work, which was focused on a post-explosion epoch of 200 days, here we study the spectral evolution from 100 to about 450 days. We also augment the model set with progenitors that evolved without wind mass loss. Models with the same final, pre-SN mass have similar yields and produce essentially the same emergent spectra. Hence, the uncertain progenitor mass loss history compromises the inference of the initial, main sequence mass. This shortcoming does not affect Type IIb SNe in which mass-loss has left a small residual H-rich envelope in the progenitor star at core collapse and, hence, an intact He core. However, our 1D models with a different pre-SN mass tend to yield widely different spectra, as seen through variations in the strong emission lines due to [N II] λλ 6548, 6583, [O I] λλ 6300, 6364, [Ca II] λλ 7291, 7323, [Ni II] λ 7378, and the forest of Fe II lines below 5500 Å. At the lower mass end, the ejecta are He-rich, and at 100 days, they cool through He I, N II, Ca II, and Fe II lines, with N II and Fe II dominating at 450 days. These models, associated with He giants, stand in conflict to observed SNe Ib, which typically lack strong N II emission. Instead, they may lead to SNe Ibn or, because of additional stripping by a companion star, ultra-stripped SNe Ic. In contrast, for higher pre-SN masses, the ejecta are progressively He poor and cool at 100 days through O I, Ca II, and Fe II lines, with O I and Ca II dominating at 450 days. Non-uniform, aspherical, large-scale mixing is more likely to determine the SN type at intermediate pre-SN masses, rather than any compositional differences. Variations in clumping and mixing, as well as departures from spherical symmetry would increase the spectral diversity, but also introduce additional degeneracies. More robust predictions from spectral modeling thus require that careful attention be paid to the initial conditions by incorporating the salient features of physically consistent 3D explosion models.

Solar oxygen abundance using SST/CRISP center-to-limb observations of the O I 7772 Å line

Solar oxygen abundance measurements based on the O I near-infrared triplet have been a much debated subject for several decades, since non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) calculations with 3D radiation-hydrodynamics model atmospheres introduced a large change to the 1D LTE modeling. In this work, we aim to test solar line formation across the solar disk using new observations obtained with the SST/CRISP instrument. The observed data set is based on a spectroscopic mosaic that stretches from disk center to the solar limb. By comparing the state-of-the-art 3D NLTE models with the data, we find that the 3D NLTE models provide an excellent description of the line formation across the disk. We obtain an abundance value of A(O)=(8.73 ± 0.03) dex, with a very small angular dispersion across the disk. We conclude that spectroscopic mosaics are excellent probes for geometric and physical properties of hydrodynamics models and NLTE line formation.

Raising the observed metallicity floor with a 3D non-LTE analysis of SDSS J102915.14+172927.9

Context. The first stars marked the end of the cosmic dark ages, produced the first heavy elements, and set the stage for the formation of the first galaxies. Accurate chemical abundances of ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < −4) can be used to infer the properties of the first stars and thus the formation mechanism for low-mass second-generation stars in the early Universe. Spectroscopic studies have shown that most second-generation stars are carbon enhanced. A notable exception is SDSS J102915.14+172927.9, which is the most metal-poor star known to date, largely by virtue of the low upper limits of the carbon abundance reported in earlier studies. Aims. We re-analysed the composition of SDSS J102915.14+172927.9 with the aim of providing improved observational constraints on the lowest metallicity possible for low-mass star formation and constraining the properties of its Population III progenitor star. Methods. We developed a tailored three-dimensional model atmosphere for SDSS J102915.14+172927.9 with the Stagger code, making use of an improved surface gravity estimate based on the Gaia DR3 parallax. Snapshots from the model were used as input in the radiative transfer code Balder to compute 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) synthetic spectra. These spectra were then used to infer abundances for Mg, Si, Ca, Fe, and Ni as well as upper limits on Li, Na, and Al. Synthetic 3D LTE spectra were computed with Scate to infer the abundance of Ti and upper limits on C and N. Results. In contrast to earlier works based on 1D non-LTE corrections applied to 3D LTE results, we are able to achieve ionisation balance for Ca I and Ca II when employing our consistent 3D non-LTE treatment. The elemental abundances are systematically higher than those found in earlier works. In particular, [Fe/H] is increased by 0.57 dex, and the upper limits of C and N are larger by 0.90 dex and 1.82 dex, respectively. Conclusions. We find that Population III progenitors with masses 10–20 M⊙ exploding with energy E ⪅ 3 × 1051 erg can reproduce our 3D non-LTE abundance pattern. Our 3D non-LTE abundances are able to better constrain the progenitor mass and explosion energy as compared to our 1D LTE abundances. Contrary to previous work, we obtain higher upper limits on the carbon abundance that are ‘marginally consistent’ with star formation through atomic line cooling, and consequently, these results prevent us from drawing strong conclusions about the formation mechanism of this low-mass star.

Fundamental stellar parameters of benchmark stars from CHARA interferometry

Context. Stellar models applied to large stellar surveys of the Milky Way need to be properly tested against a sample of stars with highly reliable fundamental stellar parameters. We have established a programme aiming to deliver such a sample of stars. Aims. Here we present new fundamental stellar parameters of nine dwarf stars that will be used as benchmark stars for large stellar surveys. One of these stars is the solar-twin 18 Sco, which is also one of the Gaia-ESO benchmarks. The goal is to reach a precision of 1% in effective temperature (Teff). This precision is important for accurate determinations of the full set of fundamental parameters and abundances of stars observed by the surveys. Methods. We observed HD 131156 (ξ Boo), HD 146233 (18 Sco), HD 152391, HD 173701, HD 185395 (θ Cyg), HD 186408 (16 Cyg A), HD 186427 (16 Cyg B), HD 190360, and HD 207978 (15 Peg) using the high angular resolution optical interferometric instrument PAVO at the CHARA Array. We derived limb-darkening corrections from 3D model atmospheres and determined Teff directly from the Stefan–Boltzmann relation, with an iterative procedure to interpolate over tables of bolometric corrections. Surface gravities were estimated from comparisons to Dartmouth stellar evolution model tracks. We collected spectroscopic observations from the ELODIE spectrograph and estimated metallicities ([Fe/H]) from a 1D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analysis of unblended lines of neutral and singly ionised iron. Results. For eight of the nine stars we measure the Teff ⪅ 1%, and for one star better than 2%. We determined the median uncertainties in log g and [Fe/H] as 0.015 dex and 0.05 dex, respectively. Conclusions. This study presents updated fundamental stellar parameters of nine dwarf stars that can be used as a new set of benchmarks. All the fundamental stellar parameters were based on consistently combining interferometric observations, 3D limb-darkening modelling, and spectroscopic analysis. The next paper in this series will extend our sample to giants in the metal-rich range.

Fundamental stellar parameters of benchmark stars from CHARA interferometry

This precision is essential for accurate determinations of the full set of fundamental parameters and abundances for stars observed by the stellar surveys.Methods.We observed HD 121370 (ηBoo), HD 161797 (μHer), HD 175955, HD 182736, HD 185351, HD 188512 (βAql), and HD 189349, using the high angular resolution optical interferometric instrument PAVO at the CHARA Array. The limb-darkening corrections were determined from 3D model atmospheres based on the STAGGER grid. TheTeffwere determined directly from the Stefan-Boltzmann relation, with an iterative procedure to interpolate over tables of bolometric corrections. We estimated surface gravities from comparisons to Dartmouth stellar evolution model tracks. The spectroscopic observations were collected from the ELODIE and FIES spectrographs. We estimated metallicities ([Fe/H]) from a 1D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analysis of unblended lines of neutral and singly ionised iron.Results.For six of the seven stars, we measured the value ofTeffto better than 1% accuracy. For one star, HD 189349, the uncertainty onTeffis 2%, due to an uncertain bolometric flux. We do not recommend this star as a benchmark until this measurement can be improved. Median uncertainties for all stars in log gand [Fe/H] are 0.034 dex and 0.07 dex, respectively.Conclusions.This study presents updated fundamental stellar parameters of seven giant and subgiant stars that can be used as a new set of benchmarks. All the fundamental stellar parameters were established on the basis of consistent combinations of interferometric observations, 3D limb-darkening modelling, and spectroscopic analysis. This paper in this series follows our previous papers featuring dwarf stars and stars in the metal-poor range.

Abundance of beryllium in the Sun and stars: The role of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects

Context. Earlier studies have suggested that deviations from the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) play a minor role in the formation of Be II 313 nm resonance lines in solar and stellar atmospheres. Recent improvements in the atomic data allow a more complete model atom of Be to be constructed and the validity of these claims to be reassessed using more up-to-date atomic physics. Aims. The main goal of this study therefore is to refocus on the role of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects in the formation of Be II 313.04 and 313.11 nm resonance lines in solar and stellar atmospheres. Methods. For this, we constructed a model atom of Be using new atomic data that recently became available. The model atom contains 98 levels and 383 radiative transitions of Be I and Be II and uses the most up-to-date collision rates with electrons and hydrogen. This makes it the most complete model atom used to determine 1D NLTE solar Be abundance and to study the role of NLTE effects in the formation of Be II 313 nm resonance lines. Results. We find that deviations from LTE have a significant influence on the strength of the Be II 313 nm line in solar and stellar atmospheres. For the Sun, we obtained the 1D NLTE Be abundance of A(Be)NLTE = 1.32 ± 0.05, which is in excellent agreement with the meteoritic value of A(Be) = 1.31 ± 0.04. Importantly, we find that NLTE effects become significant in FGK stars. Moreover, there is a pronounced variation in 1D NLTE–LTE abundance corrections with the effective temperature and metallicity. Therefore, contrary to our previous understanding, the obtained results indicate that NLTE effects play an important role in Be line formation in stellar atmospheres and have to be properly taken into account in Be abundance studies, especially in metal-poor stars.

Abundance of barium in the atmospheres of red giants in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 104 (47 Tuc)

Context. While most (if not all) Type I Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) are characterised by spreads in the abundances of light chemical elements (e.g. Li, N, O, Na, Mg, Al), it is not yet well established whether similar spreads may exist in s-process elements as well. Aims. We investigated the possible difference in Ba abundance between the primordial (1P) and polluted (2P) stars in the Galactic globular cluster (GGC) 47 Tuc (NGC 104). For this purpose, we obtained homogeneous abundances of Fe, Na, and Ba in a sample of 261 red giant branch (RGB) stars, which comprises the largest sample used for Na and Ba abundance analysis in any GGC so far. Methods. Abundances of Na and Ba were determined using archival GIRAFFE/VLT spectra and 1D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analysis methodology. Results. Contrary to the finding of Gratton et al. (2013, A&A, 549, A41), we did not detect any significant Ba–Na correlation or 2P–1P Ba abundance difference in the sample of 261 RGB stars in 47 Tuc. This corroborates the result of D’Orazi et al. (2010, ApJ, 719, L213), who found no statistically significant Ba–Na correlation in 110 RGB stars in this GGC. The average barium-to-iron ratio obtained in the sample of 261 RGB stars, ⟨[Ba/Fe]1D NLTE⟩ = −0.01 ± 0.06, agrees well with those determined in Galactic field stars at this metallicity and may therefore represent the abundance of primordial proto-cluster gas that has not been altered during the subsequent chemical evolution of the cluster.

Nebular phase properties of supernova Ibc from He-star explosions

Following our recent work on Type II supernovae (SNe), we present a set of 1D nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer calculations for nebular-phase Type Ibc SNe starting from state-of-the-art explosion models with detailed nucleosynthesis. Our grid of progenitor models is derived from He stars that were subsequently evolved under the influence of wind mass loss. These He stars, which most likely form through binary mass exchange, synthesize less oxygen than their single-star counterparts with the same zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) mass. This reduction is greater in He-star models evolved with an enhanced mass loss rate. We obtain a wide range of spectral properties at 200 d. In models from He stars with an initial mass > 6 M⊙, the [O I] λλ 6300, 6364 is of a comparable or greater strength than [Ca II] λλ 7291, 7323 – the strength of [O I] λλ 6300, 6364 increases with the He-star initial mass. In contrast, models from lower mass He stars exhibit a weak [O I] λλ 6300, 6364, strong [Ca II] λλ 7291, 7323, and also strong N II lines and Fe II emission below 5500 Å. The ejecta density, which is modulated by the ejecta mass, the explosion energy, and clumping, has a critical impact on gas ionization, line cooling, and spectral properties. We note that Fe II dominates the emission below 5500 Å and is stronger at earlier nebular epochs. It ebbs as the SN ages, while the fractional flux in [O I] λλ 6300, 6364 and [Ca II] λλ 7291, 7323 increases with a similar rate as the ejecta recombine. Although the results depend on the adopted wind mass loss rate and pre-SN mass, we find that He-stars of 6–8 M⊙ initially (ZAMS mass of 23–28 M⊙) match the properties of standard SNe Ibc adequately. This finding agrees with the offset in progenitor masses inferred from the environments of SNe Ibc relative to SNe II. Our results for less massive He stars are more perplexing since the predicted spectra are not seen in nature. They may be missed by current surveys or associated with Type Ibn SNe in which interaction power dominates over decay power.

Non-detection of 6Li in Spite plateau stars with ESPRESSO

ABSTRACT The detection of 6Li in Spite plateau stars contradicts the standard big bang nucleosynthesis prediction, known as the second cosmological lithium problem. We measure the isotopic ratio 6Li/7Li in three Spite plateau stars: HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815−43. We use 3D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer and for the first time apply this to high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio data from the ultra-stable ESPRESSO/Very Large Telescope spectrograph. These are among the best spectra ever taken of any metal-poor stars. As the measurement of 6Li/7Li is degenerate with other physical stellar parameters, we employ Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to find the probability distributions of measured parameters. As a test of systematics, we also use three different fitting methods. We do not detect 6Li in any of the three stars, and find consistent results between our different methods. We estimate 2σ upper limits to 6Li/7Li of 0.7, 0.6, and 1.7 per cent, respectively, for HD 84937, HD 140283, and LP 815−43. Our results indicate that there is no second cosmological lithium problem, as there is no evidence of 6Li in Spite plateau stars.

Solar oxygen abundance

ABSTRACT Motivated by the controversy over the surface metallicity of the Sun, we present a re-analysis of the solar photospheric oxygen (O) abundance. New atomic models of O and Ni are used to perform non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) calculations with 1D hydrostatic (MARCS) and 3D hydrodynamical (Stagger and Bifrost) models. The Bifrost 3D MHD simulations are used to quantify the influence of the chromosphere. We compare the 3D NLTE line profiles with new high-resolution, R$\approx 700\, 000$, spatially resolved spectra of the Sun obtained using the IAG FTS instrument. We find that the O i lines at 777 nm yield the abundance of log A(O) = 8.74 ± 0.03 dex, which depends on the choice of the H-impact collisional data and oscillator strengths. The forbidden [O i] line at 630 nm is less model dependent, as it forms nearly in LTE and is only weakly sensitive to convection. However, the oscillator strength for this transition is more uncertain than for the 777 nm lines. Modelled in 3D NLTE with the Ni i blend, the 630 nm line yields an abundance of log A(O) = 8.77 ± 0.05 dex. We compare our results with previous estimates in the literature and draw a conclusion on the most likely value of the solar photospheric O abundance, which we estimate at log A(O) = 8.75 ± 0.03 dex.

Probing 3D and NLTE models using APOGEE observations of globular cluster stars

Context. Hydrodynamical (or 3D) and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects are known to affect abundance analyses. However, there are very few observational abundance tests of 3D and NLTE models. Aims. We developed a new way of testing the abundance predictions of 3D and NLTE models, taking advantage of large spectroscopic survey data. Methods. We use a line-by-line analysis of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) spectra (H band) with the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High accUracy Spectra (BACCHUS). We compute line-by-line abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, and Fe for a large number of globular cluster K giants in the APOGEE survey. We compare this line-by-line analysis against NLTE and 3D predictions. Results. While the 1D–NLTE models provide corrections in the right direction, there are quantitative discrepancies between different models. We observe a better agreement with the data for the models including reliable collisional cross-sections. The agreement between data and models is not always satisfactory when the 3D spectra are computed in LTE. However, we note that for a fair comparison, 3D corrections should be computed with self-consistently derived stellar parameters, and not on 1D models with identical stellar parameters. Finally, we focus on 3D and NLTE effects on Fe lines in the H band, where we observe a systematic difference in abundance relative to the value from the optical. Our results suggest that the metallicities obtained from the H band are more accurate in metal-poor giants. Conclusions. Current 1D–NLTE models provide reliable abundance corrections, but only when the atom data and collisional cross-sections are accurate and complete. Therefore, we call for more atomic data for NLTE calculations. In contrast, we show that 3D corrections in LTE conditions are often not accurate enough, thus confirming that 3D abundance corrections are only valid when NLTE is taken into account. Consequently, more extended self-consistent 3D–NLTE computations need to be made. The method we have developed for testing 3D and NLTE models could be extended to other lines and elements, and is particularly suited for large spectroscopic surveys.

The Gaia-ESO survey: 3D NLTE abundances in the open cluster NGC 2420 suggest atomic diffusion and turbulent mixing are at the origin of chemical abundance variations

Context. Atomic diffusion and mixing processes in stellar interiors influence the structure and the surface composition of stars. Some of these processes cannot yet be modelled from the first principles, and they require calibrations. This limits their applicability in stellar models used for studies of stellar populations and Galactic evolution. Aims. Our main goal is to put constraints on the stellar structure and evolution models using new refined measurements of the chemical composition in stars of a Galactic open cluster. Methods. We used medium-resolution, 19 200 ≤ R ≤ 21 500, optical spectra of stars in the open cluster NGC 2420 obtained within the Gaia-ESO survey. The sample covers all evolutionary stages from the main sequence to the red giant branch. Stellar parameters were derived using a combined Bayesian analysis of spectra, 2MASS photometry, and astrometric data from Gaia DR2. The abundances of Mg, Ca, Fe, and Li were determined from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) synthetic spectra, which were computed using one-dimensional (1D) and averaged three-dimensional (3D) model atmospheres. We compare our results with a grid of Code d’Evolution Stellaire Adaptatif et Modulaire (CESTAM) stellar evolution models, which include atomic diffusion, turbulent, and rotational mixing. Results. We find prominent evolutionary trends in the abundances of Fe, Ca, Mg, and Li with the mass of the stars in the cluster. Furthermore, Fe, Mg, and Ca show a depletion at the cluster turn-off, but the abundances gradually increase and flatten near the base of the red giant branch. The abundance trend for Li displays a signature of rotational mixing on the main sequence and abrupt depletion on the sub-giant branch, which is caused by advection of Li-poor material to the surface. The analysis of abundances combined with the CESTAM model predictions allows us to place limits on the parameter space of the models and to constrain the zone in the stellar interior, where turbulent mixing takes place.

3D NLTE spectral line formation of lithium in late-type stars.

Accurately known stellar lithium abundances may be used to shed light on a variety of astrophysical phenomena such as big bang nucleosynthesis, radial migration, ages of stars and stellar clusters, and planet engulfment events. We present a grid of synthetic lithium spectra that are computed in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) across the stagger grid of three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic stellar atmosphere models. This grid covers three Li lines at 610.4, 670.8, and 812.6 nm for stellar parameters representative of FGK-type dwarfs and giants, spanning T eff = 4000-7000 K, log g = 1.5-5.0, [Formula: see text]-0.5, and A(Li) = -0.5-4.0. We find that our abundance corrections are up to 0.15 dex more negative than in previous work, due to a previously overlooked NLTE effect of blocking of UV lithium lines by background opacities, which has important implications for a wide range of science cases. We derive a new 3D NLTE solar abundance of A(Li) = 0.96±0.05, which is 0.09 dex lower than the commonly used value. We make our grids of synthetic spectra and abundance corrections publicly available through the breidablik package. This package includes methods for accurately interpolating our grid to arbitrary stellar parameters through methods based on Kriging (Gaussian process regression) for line profiles, and multilayer perceptrons (a class of fully connected feedforward neural networks) for NLTE corrections and 3D NLTE abundances from equivalent widths, achieving interpolation errors of the order of 0.01 dex.
