With the recycling logic applied in social areas such as university campuses, studies of evaluating waste in different ways reveal potential resources together with educational and innovative ideas. Projects implemented with the idea of recycling in university campus areas can be powerful ways to have information about waste and recycling issues. A project has been considered for artistic re- evaluation and shaping of trees, which have expired in their natural environment in the green areas of Atatürk University campus and started to dry out naturally. The aim of this project is to evaluate and shape the trees that have dried in the campus in their natural environment in an artistic framework and to recycle these trees within the campus area with an environmental and artistic approach without being cut from the roots. In project, nine dried trees, which were located in different regions within the campus area, were artistically formed by the faculty members and students of the Sculpture Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts. This study involves the re-evaluation and artistic implementation process of a tree that dries naturally in the green area of the campus.

The urban texture of Van is an important value of Anatolia, formed by the accumulation of the history, architecture, social and cultural characteristics of many civilizations in time. V an residential architecture, as in other regions of Anatolia; It was formed and developed within the framework of some factors such as geographical and climatic features, building materials and construction techniques, socio-economic structure, family structure and beliefs. Traditional Van houses were built on a stone foundation with the adobe masonry technique. Flat roofs supported by wooden beams, which have been found in many parts of Anatolia since the first settlements, are also among the architectural features of traditional Van houses. They were generally built in the plan type with an inner anteroom. As a result of the research and literature review on traditional Van houses, it has been seen that the number of registered houses is one. It has been understood that no conservation work has been carried out for the traditional Van houses, which were partially destroyed or damaged after the earthquake in 2011. The aim of this study is to make a detailed examination and evaluation on the plan features of traditional Van houses, which are one of the important elements of the historical urban texture. As a result of these examinations, it is also aimed to create a plan typology and to contribute to revealing the original value and importance of traditional Van houses. In line with the purpose of the study, 35 residences in Van's Tusba and İpekyolu (former Van Central district) districts that were able to survive and were destroyed after or before the 2011 earthquake were examined. In the light of all the data obtained, the plan typology of the Traditional Van Houses was created.

SYMBOLIC CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY: A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF NGO’S INSTARGAM POSTS ON NATIONAL DAYS
  • Jan 1, 2022
  • The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication

This article examines how NGOs representing social groups in Turkey symbolically construct national identity by describing national days on Instagram. National signs and symbols function to communicate national identity to its members and create a sense of belonging. Visual images also appear as traces of social, economic, and political processes in which identities are shaped. Therefore, this paper argues that analyzing Instagram posts by NGOs can provide insight into how national identity is constructed through national days. NGOs' organization fields are chosen considering the 2018 report of 'NGOs in the Development Process' by the Turkish Ministry of Development, and the 'maximum diversity sampling' method was used for analysis. A grounded coding process supported a thematic analysis approach was used to explore how NGOs portray national days. For this qualitative thematic analysis, a coding frame was used to conduct cluster analyses of the symbols using QDA Miner software to understand how they relate. The findings indicate that the celebration messages are mostly visualized through certain national symbols in social media. These differ in three main national identity discourses (Kemalist Nationalism, Right-Conservatism, Liberal-Kemalism and small segment of Islamist discourse and Turkism discourse shaped around nationalism, militarism and partly Islamism) parallel to NGO's political and ideological positions or social groups and values they represent.

ANALYSIS FOR THE CONCEPT OF SCALE IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERACTION OF THE ARCHITECTURE AND CINEMA THROUGH THE SPECE SETUP OF THE MOVIE "THE BFG"
  • Jan 1, 2022
  • The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication
  • Eda Ölçer Kanbur

Architecture and cinema are two disciplines that interact with each other in terms of creating spatial representations and feed each other in terms of design. While cinema provides an experimental environment for architects in terms of space design by changing the perception of space with the technical possibilities it provides in the process of viewing the space, architecture contributes to the formation of cinematographic meaning in cinema films thanks to its space-specific visual language. This interaction between the two disciplines over space allows the use of common design tools and techniques. Scale, which is a concept that enables the definition of the dimensions and physical boundaries of the space, is a design tool that is used in architecture and cinema and plays a role in the realization of space-based expression. The aim of this study, which is based on the problem that changes in space and human scale can change the meaning and function of space, is to reveal the role of scale in the perception of space and the formation of meaning in the context of the interaction of architecture and cinema disciplines. The scope of the study consists of theoretical explanations about architectural space, scale in architectural space, human scale, common and distinctive features of cinematographic space with architectural space, and the use of scale in cinematographic space. In order to investigate the semantic relationship between space and scale, the 2016 movie "The BFG" was chosen as a sample. The fact that “The BFG” is a film in which spaces and characters in non-existent scales are fictionalized in addition to use of real space and that it provides visual data on the subject of scale in space in terms of both architecture and cinema has been effective in the selection of the film as a sample. In order to examine the research subject and collect data, the film frames are determined by considering the scale relationship between the characters and the spaces, and the frame-by-frame analysis method is applied to reveal the meaning of the space in the movie depending on the scale. The selected film frames are examined under five main headings: the scale relationship between the characters, the characters and the architectural spaces and the space accessories, the natural spaces, the scale relationship between the boundary elements of the space, and the scale relationship between the characters and the space with the effect of light and shadow. As a result of the analysis made by considering the meaning that the shooting scales used to add to the space, it was concluded that the scale is not only a concept that defines the physical boundaries of the space, but also an element that creates and changes both the architectural and cinematographic meaning depending on its relationship with the human scale.

THE EFFECT OF CONSUMPTION VALUE ON ORGANIC FOOD PURCHASE INTENTION WITH THE MEDIATING ROLE OF CONSUMER INVOLVEMENT
  • Jan 1, 2022
  • The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication
  • Lojain Al Waseti + 1 more

Throughout the past years, worldwide interest in organic food has increased, as well as in Turkey. This study is done in Turkey to understand what affects the organic food purchase intention in terms of consumption values theory with the mediation of involvement. The findings of this study showed that there is a positive direct significant relationship between functional value (quality + price), and emotional value with the organic food purchase intention, there is a negative direct relationship between social value and organic food purchase intention. Involvement fully mediates the relationship between functional value-price and purchase intention, whereas it partially mediates the relationship between emotional value and purchase intention. Involvement positively affects the organic food purchase intention.
