Gender effect on classroom management skills and competencies of teachers: A meta-analysis study

This study aims at determining the effect sizes of perceptions and opinions of teachers regarding classroom management skills and competencies according to their gender. 19 journal articles out of 28 journal articles specializing on teachers’ classroom management skills and competencies in Turkey downloaded from the national thesis archives of Higher Education Institution appropriate to inclusion criteria are included in the study. Also, moderators which could not be included to the assessment of primary researches as publication type, publication year, region where study conducted, educational level, school type, scale type, branches of the teachers and gender of the researcher moderators were analyzed as variables. As a result, according to fixed effects model (d=0,149) and random effects model (d=0,133) in favor of female teachers, effect size was statistically significant. Moderator analysis revealed that publication type (p=0,001), type of scale (either ready or improved) (p=0,049) and validity and reliability studies (p=0,008) were found as moderators. Furthermore, effect sizes of researches showed that gender awareness included a continuing tendency over the years. Moderator analysis showed that school type (p=0,054), educational level (p=0,477), region where research was conducted (p=0,075), teachers’ branches (p=0,257) and gender of the researchers were not considered as moderators. As a result, it is recommended not to use gender as an important independent variable in studies in relation to teachers’ perceptions and opinions on classroom management skills and competencies.

School truancy among Turkish high school students: A test of General Strain Theory

School absenteeism is a complicated problem with a variety of causes. It has been shown to be one of the main predictors of school drop-outs as well as leading to delinquency and criminal behavior in adulthood. This study examines the applicability of General Strain Theory on educational factors by considering truancy as a risk behavior. In this empirical study, we test the explanatory powers of certain kinds of strain, including school strain, economic deprivation, negative life events, anger, college plans, past victimization, and depression on students’ truancy. Data were drawn from the part of 2008 Youth in Europe Survey conducted in Istanbul in 2008. The sample consists of 2445 high school students. Results indicate that school strain, anger, and negative life events are significantly associated with likelihood of truancy while past victimization and economic strain have no effect. College goal and depression, on the other hand, have relatively weaker effects on students’ school absenteeism. Findings revealed that there is a relationship between cutting classes and certain kinds of strain among Turkish adolescents. The study also demonstrates that General Strain Theory is applicable for problematic behaviors in an educational context and generalizable to countries other than the U.S.

Sexism: Ambivalence toward men

Objective. The objective of the study is to test the Ambivalence toward Men Inventory (AMI) that is developed for the purpose of estimating the ambivalence of women towards men on the basis of Ambivalent Sexism.Method. The sample consists of 421 university students. A survey questionnaire was used in the research in order to determine the socio-demographic properties of the participants, and AMI was used in order to measure their social sexism tendencies.Findings. The general average of AMI is 4,22; and it was seen that men and women have ambivalence above the average towards each other. By gender, there is a significant difference between hostile attitudes towards men (HM) (t(421)=-15,33 p<0,05), and benevolent attitudes towards men (BM) (t(421)=-5,18 p<0,05). Sub-factor correlations showed that there is a significant relationship between HM and BM. In contrast with women, encountering a significant relationship between only maternity and compensatory gender differentiation in men showed that women’s domestic responsibilities and maturity are determinative in the development of benevolent behaviours in men towards women.Discussion. The positive relationship observed between HM and BM in AMI shows that women participants resist the male-dominant system on the one hand, while they also have the tendency to justify and support this system.
