IMPROVING THE ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN DIFFERENTIATING SUFFIX –ED IN FORM OF VERB AND ADJECTIVE THROUGH SCAFFOLDING TECHNIQUE

The objective of this research was to prove that the use of scaffolding technique is effective to improve the ability of the eighth grade students of SMP LabSchool Palu in differentiating suffix –ed in form of verb and adjective. The researcher conducted intact group research design that applied two groups as a sample of the research which are experimental and control groups. The research population was the eighth grade students of SMP LabSchool Palu. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to choose the sample of this research. The total number of sample in the research was 49 students. In collecting the data of the research, the researcher used instrument which was post-test to both experimental and control groups. Moreover, the treatment was given only to the experimental class while the control class was not. The statistical analysis was used to analyze the data in the purpose of to know the significant difference of achievement on the students’ post-test between experimental and control groups. The result of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between post-test results of experimental and control groups. By applying two-tailed test at 0.05 level of significance with 24 degree of freedom (df) or 25-1= 24, the researcher found that t-counted (4.25) was higher than t-table (2.064). It means that the research hypothesis was accepted. Based on this result, it was inferred that the use of scaffolding technique in teaching suffix –ed in form of verb and adjective was effective to the eighth grade students of SMP LabSchool Palu.
