How do digital technologies impact healthcare consumer landscape?

Answer from top 10 papers

The integration of digital technologies into learning environments is transforming the healthcare consumer landscape by enhancing the quality and safety of patient care through improved training and education (Hevko et al., 2023). These technologies, such as electronic health records (EHRs) and mobile health applications, are instrumental in advancing healthcare provider competencies and patient safety (Cordeiro & Helfert, 2013; Hevko et al., 2023). The use of clinical simulations and online computer-based training is particularly noteworthy for integrating technology into healthcare practices effectively (Hevko et al., 2023).
However, the rapid adoption of these technologies also introduces challenges, including privacy concerns, security risks, and the need for substantial infrastructure investments (Cordeiro & Helfert, 2013). Additionally, there is a necessity for ongoing research to optimize the use of technology in healthcare and to address the complexities of technology adoption (Cordeiro & Helfert, 2013). It is crucial to ensure that technological advancements do not compromise patient safety and are used appropriately (Hevko et al., 2023).
In summary, the incorporation of digital technologies into learning environments is pivotal for improving healthcare delivery and patient safety. While these innovations offer significant benefits, they also present challenges that must be carefully managed. The continued evolution of these technologies necessitates a balanced approach to maximize their potential while safeguarding against potential risks (`(Cordeiro and Helfert, 2013; Hevko et al., 2023)`).

High-Tech Innovations in English Language Teaching: Investigating the Role of Digital Solutions in Saudi EFL Context

As modern technology continues to advance, language teaching has also embraced the integration of high-tech innovations and solutions. The performance of the students is positively impacted by these new digital learning methods. However, since technology keeps evolving, it is imperative to monitor the use of modern digital solutions in educational settings. In line, it has become increasingly important to delve into the effects of digital applications, platforms, and tools on language learning and teaching practices. The present study aims to probe the role of digital solutions in ELT pedagogy within the context of Saudi Arabia. For this purpose, this study aims to examine the perceptions of teachers and learners regarding the efficacy of digital solutions for the improvement of language competence and performance along with the challenges faced during the process. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both surveys and interviews as data collection instruments, involving a sample population comprised of 417 students and 10 teachers. The findings reveal that students are quite enthusiastic about the use of digital applications, resources, and technology in the EFL classrooms; however, they have also exposed the lack of usage of the latest trends in technology in the learning environments. Moreover, the teachers also show a positive attitude toward the integration of high-tech solutions in the pedagogy for a better and improved learning and teaching experience. However, they also express a certain degree of unease over their level of technology apprehension, cost-related issues, and the long-term viability of digital solutions in the educational landscape. The study suggests that digital solutions have the potential to bridge the gap in access to quality education, predominantly in far-off areas or for people with limited resources. Considering the role of digital solutions in ELT can certify that educational opportunities are more reachable and inclusive for all Saudi learners, irrespective of their geographic location or socio-economic background. Thus, relevant stakeholders have to take certain initiatives to fill the gaps.

This special issue of the Knowledge Management & E-Learning: An International Journal is dedicated to describing “Advances in Healthcare Provider and Patient Training to Improve the Quality and Safety of Patient Care.” Patient safety is an important and fundamental requirement of ensuring the quality of patient care. Training and education has been identified as a key to improving healthcare provider patient safety competencies especially when working with new technologies such as electronic health records and mobile health applications. Such technologies can be harnessed to improve patient safety; however, if not used properly they can negatively impact on patient safety. In this issue we focus on advances in training that can improve patient safety and the optimal use of new technologies in healthcare. For example, use of clinical simulations and online computer based training can be employed both to facilitate learning about new clinical discoveries as well as to integrate technology into day to day healthcare practices. In this issue we are publishing papers that describe advances in healthcare provider and patient training to improve patient safety as it relates to the use of educational technologies, health information technology and on-line health resources. In addition, in the special issue we describe new approaches to training and patient safety including, online communities, clinical simulations, on-the-job training, computer based training and health information systems that educate about and support safer patient care in real-time (i.e. when health professionals are providing care to patients). These educational and technological initiatives can be aimed at health professionals (i.e. students and those who are currently working in the field). The outcomes of this work are significant as they lead to safer care for patients and their family members. The issue has both theoretical and applied papers that describe advances in patient safety and training.

Higher Education in The Digital Age: The Impact of Digital Connective Technologies

The dominant roles that digital connective technologies have in the 21st century are causing profound changes in all domains of life, which signal that we have reached a new age: the digital age. Education is one of the fundamental domains of life re-engineered to adopt to the changing landscape of what it means to function in this new age. The school paradigm which rests on the conditions and requirements of the industrial age appears to fall short in terms of meeting the needs and demands of the 21st century learner. The emerging digital connective technologies and the educational innovations they triggered such as open educational resources (OER), massive online open courses (MOOCs) and learning analytics are disrupting the learning processes and structures of the industrial age such that it is now an imperative to develop a new educational paradigm. These new innovations enable learners to extend learning outside the boundaries of traditional learning institutions through informal and enriched learning experiences using online communities on new platforms such as social media and other social platforms. The digital innovations aforementioned also free the learners from the shackles of time so that learners can, not only access but also create knowledge through social interaction and collaboration. The age we live in is ripe for unprecedented fundamental changes and opportunities for higher education (HE). Therefore, policymakers involved in education need to re-think the implications of digital connective technologies, the challenges and opportunities they bring to the educational scene while developing value-added policies regarding HE. This paper addresses the learner, instructor, learning environments and the administration dimensions of HE and how the digital connective technologies are impacting on these dimensions in the digital age. The paper also offers, as a conclusion, a road map for HE to better function in this age.
