Abstract

In this paper, a novel auxiliary circuit is presented to provide soft switching condition for the conventional PWM flyback converter. The proposed auxiliary circuit provides Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) condition for the main switch, while Zero current switching (ZCS) condition is realized for the auxiliary switch. Besides, all the converter diodes turn off under ZCS condition. Hence, switching loss and diode reverse recovery loss are significantly alleviated in the proposed converter. As the auxiliary switch voltage stress is clamped to the input voltage, which is much lower than the main switch voltage stress, the capacitive turn-on loss is considerably reduced. Therefore, the converter efficiency is improved. In addition, both the main and auxiliary switches are placed on the input side of the converter, and their source pins are connected to the input ground. Hence, no isolated gate driver is needed and the converter can be implemented using a simple gate driving circuit. In this study, the simulation results of the proposed converter for 100 kHz, 130-170 V input, and 24 V, 120 W output is shown to verify the theoretical analysis.
