Abstract

There are a few basic rules of X-ray examination, which should not be neglected, even under emergency conditions: Diagnosis of bones requires a second, for the skull often a third plane. All injuries of the cervical spine must be investigated radiologically. X-ray films taken in the course of primary treatment must be re-appraised at short notice by an experienced diagnostician for traumatology.Until now, skeletal scintigrams have not been implemented often enough in the diagnosis of skeletal injuries, in particular in multiple lesions, injuries where the mechanism of accident is not known (e.g. fall from a window, battered child), and in the diagnosis of spinal afflictions. Experiments on animals have shown that traumatic lesions of the skeleton can be recognised reliably after 48 hours. However, during the first few days, there can also be a lessening in metabolic activity, due to disturbances in circulation.
