Abstract

The published data on the phases of the vanadium-nitrogen system have been re-examined. New values are given for the composition of the nitrides at the phase boundaries and for their lattice constants. The nitrogen dissociation pressures of the cubic phase VN 0.72 and the hexagonal phase VN 0.43 have been measured between 1300° and 1600°C. A sample of very pure vanadium metal could be prepared by heating the metal in a high vacuum at 1650°C.
