Abstract

Vinyllithium reacts with titanium, zirconium and hafnium tetrahalides with reduction of the metal compounds and the formation of butadiene. In the presence of 2,2′-bipyridyl, [Ti(bipy) 3] and [Zr(bipy) 4] were obtained. By adding bidentate phosphines, butadiene complexes of the type (C 4H 6) 2M· P P are formed. Cp 2ZrCl 2 and Cp 2HfCl 2 react with CH 2CHLi to give the well-known Cp 2M(C 4H 6) complexes. Vinyl transition-metal compounds as intermediates could not be detected. All observations indicate an outer-sphere redox mechanism in the vinyllithium reactions.
