Abstract

Considering that the alternative denomination of Prometheus, Ithas, lacks a sufficient interpretation, I make a case for explaining this name with recourse to euphrosyne ‘good cheer’ by drawing a parallel from that narrative segment of Hesiod’s Theogony in which Heracles releases Prometheus from his bondage. My argument is meant to underpin the view that Hesychius’ lemma where the reference to Ithas survives, belongs to the group of fragments that deal with Eumelus’ Titanomachy.
