Abstract

ABSTRACT The comics Sudden Muanga ;(1977–2003), written and illustrated by Lalsangzuala Varte under the alias Laisaizawk, number 20 volumes and are located in Mizoram and Manipur. The comics are an adaptation of the Sudden novels by Oliver Strange in the vernacular medium, Mizo. Laisaizawk represents ethnic Mizos as cowboys, an anti-hero Western trope, and the mainland Indian state as the Apache, with their tribal costumes and fur trappings. This article analyses the hitherto forgotten comics that gained precedence during the counter-insurgency period in the Northeast region of India. Drawing on James C. Scott’s notion of hidden transcripts, we argue that the paradoxical theme in the comics becomes a site of resistance that challenges the social, cultural, and political bases of the hegemony of the Indian state.
