Abstract

Zn metal organic framework (Zn-MOF) was prepared with 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylic acid (BTC), Zn(OAc)2 and water under solvothermal condition and designated as Zn(BTC). It was characterized with XRD, FTIR and NH3-TPD and used as an alkylation catalyst. It was found that the alkylation of toluene with benzyl bromide proceeds to completion within 4 h at 60 °C, affording para-benzyltoluene with 74 % selectivity. Compared to ZnCl2, which catalyzes the partial conversion of toluene to para-benzyltoluene under optimum conditions, obtaining total conversion and higher selectivity with Zn(BTC) clearly reveals the key role of organic framework present in this catalyst. Zn(BTC) was also regenerated and reused three times in the cycle alkylation–regeneration with no significant loss of activity.
