Abstract

Zinc-based batteries have been a cornerstone of the battery market since the invention of the voltaic pile in 1799. Over more than 200 years, these batteries have affected many aspects of human life: from powering implantable medical devices that keep our hearts beating to bringing us safely back from the furthest reaches of outer space. Today, zinc-based batteries are an important tool in our effort to broaden the uptake of renewable energy sources and establish a robust and reliable electric grid. This chapter introduces zinc as a battery electrode material, chronicles the history of zinc-based battery development and applications, and provides an overview of the main chemistries that are on the market today.
