Abstract

The article examines the artistic embodiment of Victor Pelevin's view on the historical transition of Russia from the era of wild capitalism to the era of vertical power. The author concludes that in Pelevin's image of Russia of the noughties, despite the existing legal institutions, their capacities are unable to satisfy citizens' demands for justice. It is not laws but mystical practices associated with the magic of numbers, including those associated with the ancient Chinese book of divination, the I Ching. Pelevin guesses the tendency for Russia to turn to the East.
