Abstract

Summary A comparative study of two translations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth into Polish, centering on the crucial phrase ‘fair is foul and foul is fair’, leads to a discussion of genre. Arguments for and against reading Macbeth as a tragedy, as a profound Morality Play, or as a drama suggesting relativity within the system of values, are presented.
