Abstract

The Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics is the most prestigious award made by the Mathematical Association of America. This award, first presented in 1990, is the successor to the MAA Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics, given since 1962. The award is for service to mathematics that has been widely recognized as extraordinarily successful, with contributions made that influence the field of mathematics or mathematics education in a significant and positive way on a national scale. This description fits the 2004 recipient of this award exceptionally well. Professor T. Christine Stevens of the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Computer Science at Saint Louis University has a striking record of service to the MAA and the profession. Her contributions have impacted national science policy, through her service as an AMS/MAA/SIAM Congressional Science Fellow, her chairing of the MAA's Science Policy Committee, and her service on the SIAM Science Policy Committee. She has also had an impact on the effectiveness of mathematics education nationally as an Associate Program Director for the Teacher Enhancement Program at the National Science Foundation as well as by her service on many national and regional education committees, including the SIAM Education Committee, the National Research Council Committee on Recognizing, Evaluating, and Rewarding Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Technical Advisory Committee on Mathematics of the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education, and the Advisory Committee for
