Yu Kil-chun’s Idea of Work Ethic and Political Education Project for Worker

Abstract

유길준(兪吉濬, 1856-1914)은 『서유견문』에서 신지식을 갖춘 세력이 교육을 주도하여 인민의 실력을 양성한다면, 자연스럽게 국가의 독립이 달성될 수 있다는 낙관적 정치교육론을 피력했다. 『서유견문』에서 제시한 경제적 독립, 직업정신, 그리고 차등적 노동관으로 구성된 노동윤리론은 그러한 정치교육의 출발점이었다. 그러나 유길준은 일본 망명 중에 천황제 이데올로기의 영향을 받아, 교육을 통해 인민의 실력을 양성할 뿐 아니라 충군(忠君) 정신을 통해 인민을 단결시켜야 독립의 실현이 가능해진다는 정치교육론을 전개했다. 『서유견문』의 노동윤리론에 ‘노동을 통한 충군’이라는 내용을 더한 『노동야학독본』의 노동윤리론은 그러한 정치교육의 방향전환을 반영한 것이다. 유길준이 제시한 노동윤리론은 국가의 생존이라는 절박한 문제를 자신의 문제로 인식하여 헌신적으로 노동하되, 신지식을 갖춘 상류계층의 지도를 따르는 인간상을 만들어 내려는 정치 기획의 출발점이었다. 유길준의 노동윤리론은 실학사상, 서구사상, 천황제 이데올로기 등 자신이 경험한 다양한 사상적 자원을 조선의 생존이라는 상위의 목표에 맞추어 탄생시킨 지적 융합의 산물이다.Yu Kil-chun(1856-1914) proposed optimistic theory of political education that the independence of a nation will naturally be achieved if a class with new knowledge cultivates people s capability by leading an education in Sŏyu kyŏnmun (Observations on Western Civilization). The work ethic that suggested in Sŏyu kyŏnmun, which is composed of economic independence, professionalism, and differential view of labor, was the starting point of political education. However, Yu Kil-chun influenced by the ideology of Japanese emperor system during exile in Japan, and proposed a theory of political education that the independence of nation can be achieved not only by cultivating the people s power through an education, but also by uniting the people through a spirit of loyalty to the king. The idea of work ethic in Nodong yahak tokbon (Textbook for Workers’ Night School), which added loyalty to the king by labor to the idea of work ethic in Sŏyu kyŏnmun, reflected that conversion of political education s direction. The idea of work ethic which is suggested by Yu Kil-chun was a starting point of political project to make an image of individual who recognizes the urgent problem of nation s survival as his own matter and obeys to the upper class who owns new knowledge. Yu Kil-chun s idea of work ethic is a product of intellectual fusion which was created by fitting various ideological sources like Shilhak, Western thought, and the ideology of Japanese emperor system under the higher goal of Joseon s survival.
