Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia as a Biomaterial: From Orthopedic Towards Dental Applications

Abstract

This article updates and expands the previous one “Zirconia in Orthopedics: An Open Issue” written fifteen years ago, which covered the knowledge on orthopedic zirconia up to 2005. This update includes advances in this topic, responds to some of the questions that were left open on the use of zirconia in orthopedics and analyzes how such yttria-stabilized zirconia was then introduced and spread in the dental field. Fifteen years later from the first writing of this article, it remains interesting to provide a article exclusively devoted to yttria-stabilized zirconia recalling its main characteristics, properties and “critical” issues which must be taken into account in dentistry and other more recent biomedical applications.
