Abstract

This month, news programmes have been dominated by the run-up to the American presidential elections and subsequent celebrations, because the United States, a country which had, until 40 years ago, racial segregation in schools, hospitals and diners (BBC 2008) has elected the first black president. But Barack Obama has been elected by the people because of the strength of his character, and not just the colour of his skin. This constitutes the realization of the dream that Martin Luther King shared with us 45 years ago. The election of Barack Obama will, I believe, change the political landscape considerably, and my understanding is that this has happened because the American population cared enough to think, debate and then vote for what they wanted in the future.
