Abstract

ABSTRACT: Since its inception, the Oxford English Dictionary has welcomed public contributions. This paper discusses some of the initiatives involving the public since the launch of oed.com in 2000, and the ongoing preparation of the third edition. Increasing digitization of sources and searchable databases mean that editors have been able to improve entries and collect new vocabulary with the help of these contributors. Contributions of a more personal nature have also been submitted. Engagement of this kind continues to underpin and complement the work done by professional lexicographers.
