Abstract

ABSTRACT In this paper the glass formation, physical and spectroscopic properties of phospho-tellurate and germano-tellurate glasses aresystematically studied. Yb3-doped laser glasses with high stimulated emission cross-section are discussed. Keywords: Yb3 ion, emission cross-section, glass formation, laser glass 1. INTRODUCTION Yb3 ion has the simplest energy level among the rare earth ions with 4f electronic configuration, which removes detrimentalcomplications, such as excited absorption and non-radiative energy transfer between electronic energy levels. Its long fluorescence lifetime and high quantum efficiency from absorption at about 970nm to luminescence at about 1 O3Onm are quite beneficial for high power laser application.Recently, the progress in high power diode lasers with wavelength between 0.9 to 1 .1 .tm has stimulated great interest indiode pumped Yb3- doped materials. The most investigations are concentrated in Yb3- doped crystals,2 not so much in Yb-doped galsses.3 We have reported the spectroscopic properties of Yb3 in different glass hosts,45 and found the largeststimulated emission cross-section of Yb in tellurate glasses. Therefore, in this paper the further experimental results ofphysical and spectroscopic properties of Yb3-doped tellurate based glasses are presented, and Yb3-doped laser glasses withhigh emission cross-section are discussed.
