Abstract

One of the ways to make compound verbs in Turkish is to attach helping verbs to the nouns. The number of these helping verbs is limited. However, main verbs in Turkish have also been used as a helping verb. During the formation of a compound verb, some changes happen in the meaning resulting in some compound verbs which merge in meaning and become idioms. The verb –ye is one of the verbs that have lost their real meanings and are used as helping verbs. In all periods from the times of the Kutadgu Bilig to the present day Turkey, the verb –ye has always been used in Turkish as a helping verb. This study has tried to determine the historical process of the verb –ye as a helping verb presenting examples from the works determined after performing a literature review
