Abstract

The P K β emission and S K β emission spectra in fluorescence from the layered compounds M PS 3 ( M = Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Mg) have been measured with a high-resolution two-crystal vacuum spectrometer equipped with Ge(111) crystals. The measured emission spectra are mainly determined by the [P 2 S 6 ] 4- cluster. The P K β emission and S K β emission spectra of ZnPS 3 , NiPS 3 and FePS 3 are compared with available XPS valence-band spectra and theoretical band structures on a common energy scale and their valence-band structures are investigated. It is shown that the P 3 p and S 3 p states in their valence bands lie very close to each other and the respective 3 p states are alike in the M PS 3 compounds.
