Abstract

The P K β emission spectra in fluorescence from ZrP, NbP, MoP, HfP, TaP, WP, AgP 2 , CdP 2 , Mn 3 P 2 , Cd 3 P 2 and GaAs 1- x P x for 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 1 are measured with a high-resolution two-crystal vacuum spectrometer equipped with Ge(111) crystals. The influence of metal atoms appears distinctly in the P K β emission spectra of transition-metal phosphides. The effect of arsenic atoms appears slightly in the P K β emission spectra of GaAs 1- x P x . The P K β emission spectra of AgP 2 , CdP 2 , Cd 3 P 2 and GaAs 0.6 P 0.4 are compared with available P L 2,3 emission and XPS valence-band spectra on a common energy scale. It is shown that the P 3 p electrons interact fairly with the metal d electrons in the upper part of the valence band for M P ( M = Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W) and Mn 3 P 2 ; considerable p - d , s mixing occurs in the middle part for AgP 2 and in the lower part for CdP 2 and Cd 3 P 2 ; and the Ga 3 d states mix fairly with the P 3 s states in GaAs 0.6 P 0.4 .
