Abstract

The structure of selenium glass has been analyzed by the pair function method based on x-ray diffraction data. An attempt was made to construct detailed structure models and compare the RDF calculated from them more quantitatively with the observed RDF. The structure model consisting of flat chains showed a sufficient fit with experiment, being different from the one proposed by Richter for evaporated amorphous selenium. The obtained structure model has been justified by computer simulation. It was proven that the possibility of other models with chain or ring structures as main structures is rather small as far as the glass from melt is concerned. The structures of the glasses in the AsSe system have also been analyzed by the same method and are discussed in relation to the structure of selenium glass.
