Abstract

ABSTRACT This empirical study analyses the current status of Spanish universities from three vantage points: legal, economic and academic management. We use the content analysis technique to analyse all the universities that belong to CRUE (Conferencia de Rectors de las Universidades Españolas / Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities) from these three vantage points in order to inquire into some of the structural variables that affect the way these universities operate: people (rectors), programmes (contents) and budgets (economics and financing). The study finds that the leaders of Spanish universities are primarily men educated in the sciences and health sciences, and that there is notable margin for improvement in the Spanish university governance system.
