Abstract
Abstract The ratio of the squares of the X-ray structure factors for the (330)–(411) and (442)–(600) pairs in b.c.c. Fe0·76Cr0·24 and for the (333)–(511) and (442)–(600) pairs in f.c.c. Fe0·70Ni0·30 alloys have been measured in transmission from two single crystals using Ag K α radiation. For Fe0·76Cr0·24 the results are compatible with those obtained for pure Fe and Cr and, interpreted on the basis of a free-atom model, show that the 3d charge density of this alloy is preferentially t2g. The results for Fe0·70Ni0·30 differ from those obtained for pure Fe since the 3d charge density of this alloy appears to have a slight but unequivocal eg symmetry. The results reported here confirm the influence of crystal structure on the angular distribution of 3d charge in iron-group metals.
