Abstract
The application of X-ray line-broadening techniques to the determination of the crystallite size for certain materials is inappropriate since the microstructure of such materials may produce equivalent broadening of powder lines. For substances such as oxides prepared by low-temperature dehydroxylation, a regular porous microstructure is observed within single-crystal pseudomorphs of the original hydroxide. Line-broadening effects are calculated using an idealized model for such a crystal based on electron microscope studies of magnesias. Results are compared with published data for magnesias.
