Abstract

Abstract: Wynton Kelly is known throughout the jazz world as an expert accompanist, a bluesy soloist, and a skilled pianist. As a result, most jazz pianists have transcribed his work. The most elusive element of Kelly's playing is his patented bounce. This article analyzes Kelly's transcribed solo on "Blues on Purpose" from the Undiluted trio album with Paul Chambers on the bass and Jimmy Cobb on the drums; it was recorded in 1965 and was released by the Verve label. Through deep analyses of entire or excerpted materials from the first, fifth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh choruses (out of 15 total), techniques essential to Kelly's bounce will be demystified. The three primary areas selected in order to illuminate Kelly's bounce were left-hand techniques, right-hand melodic language, and rhythmic strategies. Further, suggested exercises or application of these practices will be shared so that you can add bounce to your next solo.
